Monday October 2 2023 Forecast (7:35AM)

DAYS 1-5 (OCTOBER 2-6)

High pressure will be in control of the weather through Thursday with temperature dependent on wind direction / position of which of two high centers are in control, as mentioned yesterday. A weak nearly unnoticeable frontal boundary passes by at mid week knocking temps down slightly from their peak on Tuesday. By the end of the week, humidity and cloud cover will be on the increase as we get into a southerly air flow ahead of an approaching trough and frontal system, but we should get through most of if not of all of Friday’s daylight without any significant rain shower threat. As far as wildfire smoke goes, we had plenty of that around yesterday, and it cleared out somewhat last night, but we’ll see it drifting across the region at times today, this time a little more concentrated in western sections, and then after a break tomorrow, it may be back at times during mid week, before the southerly air flow pushes it out and back toward its source region in Canada at the end of the week.

TODAY: Patchy clouds and a few areas of ground fog early, then sunshine, which may be filtered at times by some Canadian wildfire smoke as well. Highs 69-76. Wind N up to 10 MPH.

TONIGHT: Clear except ground fog patches developing in lower elevations. Lows 47-54. Wind NW under 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Sunny. Highs 77-84. Wind W up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Clear. Ground fog patches interior lower elevations. Lows 51-58. Wind N up to 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Sunny. Highs 72-79, coolest coastal areas. Wind E up to 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Fog patches again in lower elevation locations. Lows 50-57. Wind SE up to 10 MPH.

THURSDAY: Sun and a few clouds. Highs 70-77. Wind SE to S 5-15 MPH.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Patchy fog. Lows 58-65. Wind S 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY: Variably cloudy. Highs 68-75. Wind S 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (OCTOBER 7-11)

Weather changes for the weekend (October 7-8) with a trough and frontal boundary moving through the region Saturday with episodes of rain showers and high humidity. Depending on the timing of the front, it may still be wet early on Sunday before turning cooler, breezy, and drier behind the front with a sun/cloud mix. The early part of next week will be governed by upper level low pressure bringing clouds at times, a few potential rain showers but often dry, but breezy and cool weather.

DAYS 11-15 (OCTOBER 12-16)

High pressure is expected to move in with dry weather, a cool start to the period then a milder trend through mid period. Late-period potential unsettled weather returns with low pressure to the south needing to be watched for any northward advancement.

  1. Thoughts on the Patriots
    1. When the defense struggles there is no chance for this team to win.
    2. BB should have benched the defensive starters like Judon when they benched Mac Jones. Then we would have only been without Gonzo, now we have lost two major players on defense and basically our entire secondary.
    3. Even though I say the Patriots defense struggled they really didn’t with all the injuries they had, most of the secondary were already the second stringers.
    4. Oline SUCKS!!!
    5. Stevenson has yet to break out a good game this year mainly due to poor Oline.
    6. Douglas showed that he can play once he can figure out the routes he is suppose to run. His one good play was a mess up on his part as he ran into his own player as he was suppose to go behind him for a deep crosser. Hence why I think Bill is not giving him as many opportunities as we all believe he should.
    7. Need to let KB and the TEs get targeted, stop with Parker and JUJU. They are just not worth it.

    1. PS if they lose next week against the saints, I really think this season is over, and could be the worst record the Patriots have seen since before BB tenure with the team. Really need to hope Kraft gives Bill O’Brian or someone else more power on the selection of Offensive players next draft.

  2. Thanks, TK.

Didn’t watch the Pats game, but read about it early this morning. My thoughts on the team can be summed up in three words: Very limited talent.

My advice: A total overhaul, which means a replacement of ALL coaches (that includes O’Brien) and most of the current roster.

  3. Agree !!! My ire is with Belicheck.

    The offense is boring.

His moves are terrible. Anyone following how productive Jakoby Meyers has been. And comparatively, Smith Shuster ?

No one else in any other field would retain their job with the 5 yr recent performance Bill has had. And we still have to put up with his arrogant press conferences as if he were still going 14-3.

    1. 5 years ago they were 11-5 and won the Super Bowl
4 years ago they were 12-4 and won the Division
3 years ago they were 7-9 during COVID
2 years ago they were 10-7 and lost in the Wild Card with a Rookie QB
1 year ago they were 8-9.

That is better than any 5-year period in the history of about half the teams in the league.

Whether we all wanted to admit it or not, we KNEW this day was coming. This league is built so that teams do not stay on top very long. We had an unparalleled run during the modern era. It had to end sometime, and when it did, it would be sudden, and likely last at least a few years. That’s just the way this league is designed. Instead of complaining about a couple of bad seasons (which is a couple less than virtually every other team in the league has had over the past 25 years), I will choose to remember the long run of success and anticipate a return to glory, whenever it comes. How long did we suffer with bad to occasionally mediocre teams before this run started? I will root for the Patriots until the day I die, win, lose, or draw. They are my team, and I will not abandon them.

      1. Ya know. You and I can disagree but then life would be boring if we all agree. But this comment.,….

Wow. Absolutely says it all. Very nice, SAK. Very nice indeed.

      2. I was including this year, so the Super Bowl year was not in my count.

You love to correct people, don’t you ?

        1. Darn. I sincerely apologize, Tom. I did not see that SAKs comment was a challenge to yours. I should have known better.

I agree with the meat of the comment in that win or lose, I am a pats fan. I agree we’ve been spoiled. But …. Didn’t pay attention to the stats as to me they are secondary. The records are in very large part due to Brady. I absolutely believe BB needs to go.

        2. OK then

5 years ago they were 12-4 and won the Division
4 years ago they were 7-9 during COVID
3 years ago they were 10-7 and lost in the Wild Card with a Rookie QB
2 years ago they were 8-9.
          This year the are 1-3.

There are still a LOT of teams that would kill for a 5-year stretch like that. The rest of my post remains absolutely valid. In a league where everyone is designed to finish .500, the Pats are still 6 games over .500 over the past 4+ seasons. The fans in this region have been spoiled rotten for the past 20 years, and forgot how the rest of the country normally feels about their teams. And the media in this town are absolutely giddy over it now. Instead of enjoying the “Golden Era of Boston Sports” they spent years pointing out all the flaws and talking about what would happen when this run ended. Now that it has ended, they can barely hide their joy because it gives them plenty of things to write about.

“It is easier to kill than to heal. It is easier to destroy than to preserve. It is easier to tear down than to build. Those who feed on destructive emotions and ambitions and deny the responsibilities that are the price of wielding power can bring down everything you care for and would protect.” – Anne Bishop

          1. The point is. Stand alone it is fine. As a challenge to someone it is pure sak.

            As an aside. Interesting quote.

  4. Thanks TK
Even though the Cowboys won I don’t like the stalled drives in the Red zone and having to settle for field goals with the exception of one drive. This has been a problem all season. Our defense got back on track big time. Next up the 49ers.

    1. JJ as painful as yesterday’s game was as a Pats fan, I really enjoyed watching the cowboys since I know they are your team. I felt your pain with red zone but they worked it through and got it done. Very nice.

  5. Tom I was not like so many Cowboys after starting 2-0 thinking the Cowboys are winning the Super Bowl. I said let’s see how they do against the 49ers and Eagles. The defense yesterday looked like the defense I saw against the Giants and Jets. I don’t know what I was looking at when they lost to the Cardinals.

    1. I’m thinking they just expected to show up and win.

And by the team they realized they needed to get going, the Cardinals had confidence and momentum.

Trust me, I know this from the Tatum Celtics. Must have happened to them 10-15 times last year.

  6. They were not going to win. BB spent last year tearing mac Jones confidence to shreds. His first three games this year showed a significant improvement. He had a horrific day but then the team as a whole did. I’ve never understood kicking anyone when down. I don’t know about anyone else, but it sure doesn’t work for me.

BB has put every player on that field and is responsible for making sure they get the coaching they need to win. He has always sucked at drafting. How many times did brady complain. He needs to go.

    1. A thought I had when I heard Brady was in the house. One of the things I admired most about Ted was his approach to young players who were struggling. He was NOT a good manager but one-on-one he was exceptional. Not sure if Brady does this since the majority were not aware Ted did. Also Brady knows what Jones is facing with BB

      1. Yaz was the final out of the game as he popped out to 3rd baseman Greg Nettles.

And the weather conditions were much like it is today. Beautiful sunny blue skies.

        1. I remember the year well. I also remember “fans” booing yaz endlessly throughout the start of his career. Interesting that you mentioned this today. There are lessons to be learned and many similarities to the pats discussion.

  7. Thanks, TK:

Speaking of Yaz, he played his final game of his career 40 years ago today, October 2, 1983.

I was there and snapped this photo of his last ever at-bat:

    https://imgur.com/iCQoKMU

I am very saddened by the passing of Wake. A great ball player, but an even better person, family man and friend.

    1. Thanks Captain! I forget. Did Yaz get a hit on his last at-bat? I see that you got his autograph as well. 🙂

Wakefield’s wife is suffering from cancer as well. Doubly harsh. 🙁

      1. Popped up to second:

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ak1ZG1EOqZA

I actually had purchased tickets to the last home game of the 1981, 1982 and 1983, not knowing when Yaz’s last season would have been.

I also made sure that I got tickets in the third-base grandstand knowing that Yaz is a lefty and would be facing me when I snapped the photo.

    2. What a wonderful memory and a treasure of that day. I remembered the anniversary of Teds last at bat was four days ago but had forgotten Yaz’s

  8. Been a tad absent from blog today (much of this week, actually).

Nothing wrong, just another insanely busy week moving onto the next phase of projects with the house, and also nephew is getting married in a few days and I’ll be at that.

And this very nice stretch of weather will find me outside after work the next 3 days for about 2 hours doing projects I couldn’t do this weekend. 🙂

    Get it done!

I’ll try to check info and comment on weather later…

“We’re probably not going to break records tomorrow, but we’re going to get really close to it, which we don’t typically do during the month of October.”

Are there parts of the year that are more stable than others – where the temperature records are more likely to hold for longer than other parts of the year? I can see this being true, but never thought about it.

      1. Growing up in upstate NY, I remember all sorts of uncomfortable Halloweens. There were the ones like you describe, where being warm enough and still “in costume” was a challenge. Then there were some very warm ones where you would sweat like crazy under your costume and maybe even a face mask!

        1. I do remember a few warmer ones as my kids got older. I remember a couple when the kids actually asked to go home because of was too cold. Once of those was before we got to the house that aways gave out nips to the parents. Most were 30/40ish.

I don’t recall many if any when I have not sat outside in just a sweatshirt in the last 10/20 years. Even the one when we didn’t hav e power because of the snow. Was that 2011?

            1. Did not realize that! As you may have seen me post on here before, I grew up in Amsterdam and went to college at RPI in Troy. Know the area well. I still go up there several times a year visiting my mother and other family back home.

            2. Unfortunately my primary memories of East Greenbush are getting pulled over by police for speeding on I-90. Glad they finally increased the speed limit to 65 on that stretch!

  10. with the Patriots, I am not a fan of saying this is all on Bill, but alot of it is. I do not agree that we need to get rid of Bill the coach. What we need is Bill O’Brian to open up his playbook a bit more and the Oline to get a major overhaul and the patriots to get a real target for Mac Jones. This means get rid of Parker and JUJU. Also means maybe have the draft room arranged in a different way in which you split the draft picks between offense and defense with the offense being picked by O’Brian. Get douglas and Boute more involved in the freakin game. They are rookies they are going to fumble it happens. They could amount to something if you just put him on the freakin field. Also I do have to remember it is the 3rd offensive coordinator for Mac Jones. I just want consistency as well, there are flashes of good but they are always out done by the bad.

  11. Someone mentioned Russ Francis dying this weekend. Another gut-wrenching news item. Francis was a great tight-end. In an era that wasn’t nearly as pass-happy as today he thrived as an athletic TE who in some ways revolutionized the position. He was also a really quirky person.

  12. Thanks TK.

If you havent heard, Nationwide Emergency Alert Test tomorrow , Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 2:20 p.m. EDT. Every TV, radio and cellphone in the United States should blare out emergency warning tones followed by a message that this only a test.

    Don’t be “alarmed” 🙂

      1. I have been a day off for a week. I was convinced that today is Tuesday. It is so nice to hear a younger person do the same

    1. Thank you again. Remarkable ending to what had to be horrifying for this little one’s family. Thank God

  13. 48F atop Mt Washington and 46F at the Marshfield Airport.

I had the heat on this morning in my car and, with windows open, will probably have the A/C on this afternoon to cool it off. 🙂
