Monday December 25 2023 Forecast (7:38AM)

DAYS 1-5 (DECEMBER 25-29)

Merry Christmas! A quiet holiday for those celebrating today with a light wind, lots of clouds, and areas of fog, especially to start the day. But it will be a precipitation-free day with generally fine conditions for local / regional travel. The quiet weather will continue through Tuesday. Then low pressure winding up through the Midwest will redevelop in the Mid Atlantic and move off our coast later Wednesday to early Thursday. Here, the air will be mild enough for this to be a rain event. This one will not be nearly as potent as the recent one. As this low moves away, upper level low pressure in the region will keep it somewhat unsettled into late week as well, but with a bit of a cool-down, so we may see snow showers in additional rain showers, depending on timing and location.

TODAY (CHRISTMAS DAY): Areas of fog this morning. Mostly cloudy. Highs 45-52. Wind variable under 10 MPH.

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Areas of fog. Lows 33-40. Wind variable under 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Lots of clouds / limited sun. Highs 46-53. Wind variable up to 10 MPH becoming S.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Lows 33-40. Wind S up to 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Cloudy. Rain arriving. Highs 43-50. Wind SE 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Rain likely. Areas of fog. Lows 38-45. Wind E 5-15 MPH.

THURSDAY: Cloudy start – rain tapers off. Lots of clouds, limited sun, and a passing rain shower possible afternoon. Highs 45-52. Wind NE-N 5-15 MPH.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Lots of clouds. A rain or snow shower possible. Lows 33-40. Wind N 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY: Lots of clouds. A rain or snow shower possible. Highs 35-42. Wind N 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (DECEMBER 30 – JANUARY 3)

Upper level low pressure hangs around for the potential of a few rain and snow showers December 30. High pressure brings dry weather December 31. Watching for the approach of low pressure and a return to unsettled weather in the first couple days of the new year but there continues to be indications this system may be shunted to the south of the region with mostly dry weather here. Temperatures not far from normal.

DAYS 11-15 (JANUARY 4-8)

Dry start. Storm threat may materialize mid to late period with rain/snow chances.

  1. Merry Christmas, TK and the WHW family!

Also, many thanks for your weather forecasts, analysis and explanations. At family get-togethers I can now explain things like bombogenesis, marine layer, convection, graupel, derecho and crepuscular rays. Admittedly, I put some of my relatives to sleep, but the more weather-oriented among them perk up.

  2. Good morning and thank you TK.

    Merry Christmas all.

    Ocean temp: 47.3

When we drive out to my daughters later today, it will be without a coat.
I can”t stand driving with a coat on and with today’s weather it is Not necessary anyway

Does NOT feel like Christmas to me. Not on the slightest. This weather certainly doesn’t help!

  3. Merry Christmas TK -and to all those in the WHW community – thanks for your analysis and (mostly) accurate forecasts. Here is to full summer dry weekends in 2024!

  4. There is cold on the other side of the hemisphere.

Evidently, Beijing is around 40N Latitude (NYC) and the temp there didn’t go above 32F at all from Dec 11th til yesterday (I believe). Saw this on CNN website. Article made it sound like this set a record.

  5. I don’t think I buy what the 12z GFS is selling only 110-120 hrs out.

Continuous different simulations of part of this 500 mb energy.

  6. Well other than the ultimate snow lovers I don’t think there are too many people complaining about today’s weather. I totally blew the sky cover forecast. A lot sunnier than I had.

    1. I’m one of the ultimate cold and snow lovers. Yes, I wish it was about 20 degrees colder. BUT, I appreciate the sunshine. Moreover, THE most important thing is to celebrate one of the great holidays of the year. And, the week between now and New Year’s has been my favorite since I was in grammar school. Love the slower pace, the lingering light shows at night – just people’s decorations and Christmas trees alit – and the time to read and reflect.

      1. Today’s weather is a blessing. My mom just finished a great visit with my brother, who lives where I work, and I was on today so we had a gathering at the end of my shift.

Now at home to do more with mom & everybody else.

        Merry Christmas all!

  7. In the Netherlands it’s been the 2nd warmest Christmas on record. And the records go back a long way. But as the Dutch forecasters reminded viewers, you don’t have to travel far to experience sustained cold and periodic snow: Oslo, Norway. Scandinavia has been wintry for a long stretch.

  8. JJ. I remember the 1989 myrtle beach snow. I wasn’t there but my in laws were in Charleston then. Hugo was also 1989. As was the Oakland earthquake with the bay bridge collapse.

    1. My first weather memory happened in July of that year with the northeast tornado outbreak and the F1 tornado that came through my area around 5pm that day.

            1. Thanks. I think you and my son are just a month apart in age. His birthday is March 13, 1984

That is quite an experience for a five year old.

  9. Local news anchor: “No white Christmas. We are all SHOCKED by this!”

Really? Boston’s odds of 1 inch or more of snow on the ground at 7 a.m. on December 25 is 23%. This year’s weather pattern, well-advertised, did not favor it.

It’s nothing to be shocked about.
