Monday February 19 2024 Forecast (7:20AM)

DAYS 1-5 (FEBRUARY 19-23)

Passing clouds this morning are associated with a cold front moving through. There is no precipitation associated with this front, so today will be dry, but with the breeze getting active behind the front, with a northwesterly air flow between low pressure to our northeast and high pressure building into the region from the west. The high center will cross the region Tuesday and Tuesday night, with tranquil weather – dry and bright on Tuesday, and quite cold Tuesday night due to the clear sky / calm wind / low dew point combination. High pressure slides offshore Wednesday with continued fair weather, but slightly milder with a few more clouds appearing. Clouds will increase Thursday ahead of an approaching trough and frontal system, which will cross the region Thursday night and early Friday with rain showers and the potential for some mix/snow over interior higher elevations at least to start the event. Rainfall may be prolonged briefly during Friday as a low pressure wave develops and moves along the frontal boundary, but I think this should happen quickly enough so that we start to clear out before Friday ends.

TODAY: Sun and passing clouds with the majority of clouds before midday. Highs 32-39. Wind NW increasing to 10-20 MPH with a few higher gusts.

TONIGHT: Clear. Lows 15-22. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, diminishing overnight.

TUESDAY: Sunny. Highs 31-38. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 17-24 except colder some interior low spots. Wind calm.

WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. Highs 38-45. Wind S up to 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Lows 30-37. Wind S 5-15 MPH.

THURSDAY: Mostly cloudy. Highs 40-47. Wind S 5-15 MPH.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Rain showers, may begin as mix/snow showers some interior higher elevations. Lows 32-39. Wind S to variable 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY: Cloudy with rain likely through midday, then some late-day clearing. Highs 40-47. Wind variable to N 5-15 MPH, higher gusts coastal areas.

DAYS 6-10 (FEBRUARY 24-28)

A minor system passing through during the February 24-25 weekend may bring a few snow showers along with seasonably colder air. Fair weather expected on February 26 before an unsettled weather potential later in the period.

DAYS 11-15 (FEBRUARY 29 – MARCH 4)

A fair, chill finish to February, based on current timing. No strong signals for major storminess the first few days of March but there will be an opportunity for some unsettled weather and temperature swings.

  1. Good morning and thank you TK.

    Beautiful morning….

More HO-HUM weather, at least in my MIND.

Even though it is 29, it feels like Spring today. Yesterday was 38 here and very pleasant, again like an early Spring day to me.

This Winter just hasn’t cut it at all. PATHETIC!

Bring on Spring. I have my fishing gear all ready. A new rod and reel stands next to my desk, ready to go. So, yes, I am ready for Spring. 🙂

Not sure what the long range forecast is for Summer, but it wouldn’t surprise me if we all suffer in extreme HEAT and HUMIDITY. It would be the perfect compliment to this SHITTY WINTER. 🙂

    1. Well, that’s optimism for ya. 😉

It’s too soon to know what summer will be like. The HTE is still present, so that may have a say. Also looks like we’ll be dropping out of El Nino and toward at least a weak La Nina. A lot to analyze in the weeks / months ahead regarding the warm season outlook.

As far as the current pattern, I’m kind of thankful it’s been “easier” over more difficult with all the mom-related running. It can stay that way as far as I’m concerned.

      1. That part is easily understood and for that I’m happy it has been easier. So, at this point, let’s keep it that way.
We’ll make up for it another Winter.

Yesterday, you indicated that Boston will see a more sizeable snow storm, I think towards the end of the month. Do You think that is still in the cards? Looking at the Euro and GFS, prospects aren’t looking so great at the moment, although that is always subject to change. 🙂

        Many thanks

          1. March, eh?
            We shall see.
At this point, if it doesn’t want to snow this month, then no snow in March please. AndApril for that matter.

  2. TK is it longer posts that get filtered? I wrote something… auto filtered. I now copy before I hit submit so I’m not defeated. Tried to post again. Auto filtered.

    1. There have been a couple of others, myself included, with posting issues. i have been unable to figure out if it’s something I’m doing.

      1. lately I have expeienced myself being taken to strange websites or pages when i accidentally hit sone key on rmthe keyboard, perhaps when hotting the control key instead ofcyhe shift key,,? or a fun tion key? But I have never posted to Whe and had it diappear.

    2. Weird. Wonder if it is a certain word(s)? or perhaos a certain character typed by mistake?
      A non-printable control character??
      Something is not right.

I have not yet experienced that . but by my count, you are the 3rd person to experience this.

      1. I just tried a third time. Still filtered. Gotta be a specific word, I think. There’s one way to test, however. It was a longer comment/life update. I’ll reply in sections. Maybe one section gets filtered.

        1. I will have to look. I haven’t changed any settings.

But I won’t really be able to look until later today.

          1. It’s no rush on my end. But it is a curiosity to wonder what trips the filter. I just tried the first paragraph alone and it was filtered. Tricky little thing, these wordpress blogs! 🙂

  3. Here are the 7 day forecasts from around the dial. Channel 25 seems to be experimenting with a change in their graphics. And also now not displaying the current day for their 7 day forecasts. Seems weird to me.

  4. It’s peak of tropical season on the southern hemisphere, and right on cue comes the “once in a while” tropical system for the South Atlantic, a basin that is too small and carries a lot of wind shear to allow many of these.

Tropical Storm Akara is shown off the Brazil coast on this surface analysis.

  5. Thanks, TK.

    I echo what JPD said.

And I’ve resigned myself to the fact that this winter has had no umph and is unlikely to produce sustained cold (I need just one hand and another couple of fingers to count the number of nights in the teens this entire winter; that’s remarkably lame). This sort of thing happens. But next year let’s hope we don’t have a 3rd year in succession of what is essentially a non-winter.

    1. Boston had 36+ inches of snow in January 2022. While much of 2021-2022 was benign, I don’t consider that a non winter.

We’re in a quiet period though. But it was worse for snow in from the end of 1977-78 winter until the start of 1981-82 with 3 consecutive winters without a 6 inch snowfall at Boston.

We cannot count this one out. It’s February 19th.

We passed the midpoint of winter on February 3rd.

    2. Totally agree. And I will repeat for about the 4th time. I have yet to wear a Winter coat this Winter. ON the coldest afternoon we had, I walked down to the post office with a heavy jersey and light jacket on and was perfectly comfortable. Just NOT a WINTER
      at all this year.

      Truly USELESS!!!

It smells of 2011-2012 where the experts kept saying that the cold and snow was coming. Guess what? It NEVER came.
Will it come this year? I have my serious doubts.

      1. I absolutely totally agree with you old salty . It is always next month . My gut tells me Boston comes way below for snow & yes I know today’s date .

  6. TK, I’m not including the 2021-2022 winter.

I’m saying that last winter and this one so far have been lame. I don’t think that’s arguable, frankly. I do agree with you that this winter isn’t over. But moving forward I think its core message remains very much the same, at least in the short and medium range. If this winter continues to be umphless, which I do expect, then I’d hope that next winter at least brings us something similar to what 2021-2022 did.

Besides the lack of snow, it’s been the lack of depth of cold that has surprised me this winter. I’m not easily surprised. There hasn’t been any depth to the cold. Boston may bottom out at 15F (and that was ever so brief) this winter! I’ve NEVER experienced that, and the closest bottoming out for me was in 2012 at 9F (6 degree difference with this year!). Not surprising given how relatively mild it’s been in Southern Quebec and how few true Arctic highs came in from our north or northwest.

It is true – as SAK noted – that we’ve had warmer/milder winters. Absolutely. We also haven’t had many days in the 50s or 60s. That’s not been the issue. Rather, it’s the cooling, especially at night, that’s been absent. It’s almost like a winter in Amsterdam where differentials between daytime highs and nighttime lows are small, except this is isn’t Amsterdam.

  7. Funny how perspectives can differ. My brother and I, my kids, now my grandkids get snow in a cup and out maple syrup on it. I found instructions for making maple candy with snow. I sent it to my kids and said if we ever get snow to maybe try it.

    Reply from my youngest

“If we ever get snow?! We’ve had snow nonstop for over a month! Go away snow! Every time we see the grass is starts snowing!”

    1. My grandmother used to say that eating snow can give you a really bad sore throat. I don’t know from personal experience but she grew up in the country and she and her siblings did eat it on occasion. I guess at the time though, the “thrill” was worth it. 🙂

      1. I find our parents and grandparents beliefs interesting. I was brought up to believe you could not eat ice cream after eating lobster.

  8. After the 95-96 winter with over 100 inches of snow there were some dud winters that followed. The first good winter was 02-03. Were just in another dud stretch of winters.

    1. 1992-2022 was the snowiest 30 year period on record. This is with some of those “dud” winters.

This is just how it goes.

I bring up that nearly 4 year period from 1978 to 1981 that Boston failed to see a 6 inch snowfall. It’s been “worse” for snow.

This snow “drought” for the city is minor by comparison.

  9. I haven’t gone so far as to not wear a winter coat like JPD but I will say that I haven’t worn my gloves as often as my hands usually get cold fairly easily. At night I do wear them most of the time though. Although there have been a few times even then I haven’t.

    1. My winter coat lived in my car trunk for three years. I finally just donated it this year. Washed first of course.

  10. 1995-1996 had the whole package. Started in December (and even late November in the interior) cold and snowy, ended cold and snowy (early April). Loved that winter. Sure, there were a few milder spells, but overall it was a steady diet of snow and cold.

  11. Philip NYC has 7.5 inches for the season. They got 2 inches with the weekend storm and had 3.2 inches with the storm last Tuesday.

    1. Thank you Vicki . 4-5 days as it’s a major procedure than visiting nursing at home every other day . I’m out of work at 3pm & off for the next 3 weeks to care for her. I came in today because it’s double time & half .

  12. And re FB jail …it is Imgur. Every one of my posts is being removed. You’d think they’d look at them but then logic doesn’t seem to be the rule any more.

  13. B’s 2-2 after 2.

Brazeau, up from Providence Bruins, gets 1st NHL goal.

It would be nice to see a B’s win!!

  14. Thanks TK.

Ever since the beginning of January I had been praying hard for no snow because of all the stuff we were (and still are) dealing with.

    1. Ok, weird. The above is the start of the longer message I wrote that got filtered. I tried posting the above and left out the next line that said:
I can’t remember if I mentioned here the increased bad luck…
Posting this to see if the above sentence gets it filtered.

      1. Absolutely bizarre. I can’t figure out why it filtered it when the “ I can’t remember if I mentioned here the increased bad luck…” is combined with the first sentence.

        1. Any chance you accidentally type some sort of control character that is/was hidden? Just wondering. Very strange, indeed!

          1. I’m losing posts too. Short and no control characters and no links.

Maybe FB followed me here and is playing with more than just me 🙄

  15. Thanks, TK

I’ve had issues with WordPress when I’ve cut and pasted text and when I have used certain punctuation, such as the degree symbol or special Spanish characters. I am wondering, Dr. S., if WordPress considers the ellipsis a special character.

      1. If an eclipse were not allowed….the majority of my comment would disappear.

        And I hear you … 🙂 🙂 🙂

    1. A slump breaker!

SAK was at this game today.

I was at last Tuesday’s – a shoot-out loss, but at least it was entertaining and they didn’t lose in regulation that night.

      1. Me too 🙂

46-28 were the shots or close to that and then multiple rounds in the shootout (8-10 ??)

Pastrnak from the faceoff circle with about 1:30 left and the bruins net empty. The garden exploded !!!

  16. Quite a game and one that was needed. The Brazeau goal was great to see. His very 1st NHL goal! He is a big fella too.

I would like to see more D from the team. The puck has been in their end way too often and for way too much time.

    1. They’ve definitely been struggling of late, but it happens to everyone. Just have to make sure you solve the issues before it goes on too long and becomes a rut you can’t get out of. Hopefully today was the start. Now it’s on the road we go, and sometimes that’s just what is needed. Get away from home and focus on the game – no distractions.

  17. ECMWF MJO outlook keeps the index “in the circle” aka pretty much a non-factor through March 4.

  18. Tornado warning in CA northeast of the Bay Area I’m reading fhe state sees an average of 11/yr. But in the lower scale.

  19. I’m trying my comment here with no ellipses.

Ever since the beginning of January I had been praying hard for no snow because of all the stuff we were (and still are) dealing with. I can’t remember if I mentioned here the increased bad luck, after our aunt broke her hip, the surgery made her alzheimers worse. Rehab just didn’t even progress for a month. My SO got into her first car accident with our only car (her first accident) two weeks ago and thankfully I was borrowing a friends car at the time and was able to pick her up (she’s ok physically) and drive her home. almost as soon as we get in the door the rehab place calls and says the aunt was unresponsive for twenty seconds so they sent her off to the hospital. Fast forward a few days and her decline is such that it is time for hospice. I had always heard that little old ladies breaking their hips was a common downfall but to have it happen really brings it home. At any rate – we’ve had her aunt home for a week so far with a parade of nurses. My friend is still letting us borrow his car, I think I’m going to make an application for sainthood for him. lol. So, if anyone can echo TK’s thankfulness that there’s no snow on the ground, it’s me. I look for blessings in any capacity. Oh and the insurance company said “your aunt didn’t say that your SO had permission to drive the car” because the car was hers. Thankfully we were finally able to find the power of attorney that specifically lists my SO (and a copy of the will which had been giving us anxiety not being able to find it) so guess what insurance company? She DID have permission. lol

    1. Guess what? It’s the ellipses as a control character. When I went to delete them they were recognized as a singular unit rather than three dots so they deleted as one. So – note to self – sometimes wordpress will toss things into the filter if it has a specific type of ellipses created probably on an iphone? Not sure.

      1. Interesting on eclipses. I am as apt to have them in a comment as not.

But more important,,,it has certainly been a roller coaster for you. I’m glad some things are falling into place. But know how hectic a house can be when hospice is required.

Broke Bones caught me by surprise too. It was broken ribs that sent my brother into his final trip to the hospital.

Prayers that your life settles as much as possible soon. And hugs to you.

    2. So, sorry Dr. Let us know if you need anything at all. Your WHW family is here for you and your family! Sending positive thoughts and prayers for your aunt.

    3. So sorry to hear Doc. The hip injury was what lead to my wife’s Mother’s downfall as well. I guess it is quite common. Best wishes to your Aunt and you and your family.

  20. Prayers and positive thoughts for you and your family, Dr. S., as well as your wife tomorrow, SSK.

  21. I know it’s not the favorite of some, but I always watch the Daytona 500. For me, the race is the first sign that spring is not far away. Today’s rain-postponed race was won by William Byron in the “24 Car!”

This was particularly joyful for me. Several years ago, William donated one of his racing cars to my college roommate who runs an organization, “The Jack and Jill Foundation”, which gives Make-A-Wish-like experiences for families who are dealing with Stage 4 cancer.

The 24 Car was auctioned off and the proceeds went to Jon’s foundation.

Jon started his foundation in memory of his wife, Jill, who died more than 17 years ago of breast cancer.

I haven’t texted Jon yet because he’s watching the race on DVR delay and I don’t want to spoil the ending for him!!! 🙂

    Way to go, 24 Car!!!

    1. I love love love this. What an awesome story. Melts my heart.

I used to be a huge nascar fan. My oldest and her husband went to Charlotte and bristol and a few others. His parents had a huge bus and reserved spots at many raceways. I was a fan of Kasey kahne..somewhere I have a diecast model of his 9 car.

My SIL was a huge fan of Jeff Gordon in the 24 car. He has tons of Gordon memorabilia. I’ll send your post to him.

Thank you, Captain. And bless Jon❤️

  22. Dr. S (and all). I haven’t seen anything changed in the settings that explain the non-posting of certain messages. I’m going to see my tech guy this evening briefly so I’ll bring it up to him. I’m 99.9% sure this problem is with WordPress itself though.

    Also, new weather post!
