Monday April 8 2024 Forecast (3:23AM)

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 8-12)

A narrow ridge of high pressure brings nice weather to the region today! Although some high clouds will spill over the top of the ridge axis to our west and slightly filter the sun in parts of the region during the solar eclipse this afternoon, it won’t be a significant hindrance. As a reminder, maximum coverage of the sun for Boston will be 93% at 3:29 p.m. EDT, between an eclipse start time of 2:16 p.m. EDT and end time of 4:39 p.m. EDT. One other thing to add about today is the threat of some coastal splashover and minor flooding around the time of midday-early afternoon high tide (new moon). Otherwise, the rest of the outlook through midweek remains basically unchanged. Canadian high pressure sends a dry cold front through the region later tonight and turning the wind more northeast to east on Tuesday, with cooler conditions, especially along the coast. Fenway Park will have a cool breeze for the Red Sox home opener, but it will be dry! Midweek’s unsettled weather is still on track with a warm front taking its time to approach and move through Wednesday into Thursday, finally pushing through later Thursday into Friday, when a cold front will approach from the west. Wednesday will be cool and raw with light rain and drizzle around, with more widespread rainfall likely on Thursday and more of a showery set-up in the warm sector on Friday, maybe even with a thunderstorm here and there. Look for increasing winds as the warmer air arrives ahead of that cold front, especially during Friday.

TODAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 54-61 (you may note a slight temperature drop for about 1/2 hour either side of the eclipse maximum). Wind NW up to 10 MPH.

TONIGHT: High clouds increase. Lows 35-42. Wind NW to N 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY: Partly sunny. Highs 51-58, coolest at north-facing and east-facing shores. Wind NNE 5-15 MPH shifting to E.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Clouding up. Lows 41-48. Wind E up to 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Cloudy. Drizzle likely. Light rain possible. Patchy fog forming. Temperatures steady 41-48. Wind E 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT / THURSDAY: Cloudy. Areas of drizzle and fog. Periodic rain. Temperatures may hold 41-48 southern NH and northern MA and rise to 49-56 to the south. Wind SE-S 5-15 MPH, higher gusts possible.

THURSDAY NIGHT / FRIDAY: Cloudy. Rain showers likely. Chance of thunderstorms Friday. Lows 45-52 Thursday night. Highs 58-65. Friday. Wind S 10-20 MPH, higher gusts.

DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 13-17)

Windy, chilly weather with passing rain/mix showers possible April 13. Fair, milder, more tranquil April 14. Fair April 15, but ocean breeze may cool us off. Unsettled weather chances increase again at the end of the period.

DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 18-22)

Dry, milder early period. Unsettled weather may return later in the period with a cooling trend.

  1. TK, thank you especially for the eclipse info.

Traffic yesterday was backed up for miles in NH and VT. For those travelling today, leave early and be careful. These are the days when drivers do not pay attention.

    1. It actually was not really that backed up at all.
There was one several mile slowdown near the intersection of 93 and 89 and somebody took a picture of it and it became quite hyped.

I just made the trip and there was no problem whatsoever. 🙂

    1. Niece said they got 10 inches in concord, but it is mostly melted. Although that isn’t far enough north that you mean

      1. My folks had snowstorm week before Easter as well . But this last one was tough as they have no generator & everything up there was shut down. My dad was crazy without coffee & they were scrambling for food . They lost everything!!

        1. I loved that as well.
Where did the weekend go? I just don’t understand
HOW fast time is passing!!! Truly amazing!!!

  2. My Dunkin was selling solar eclipse doughnuts yesterday: a chocolate-covered doughnut with yellow frosting with a chocolate munchkin in the middle. Ah, marketing!!!!!

  3. Departed at 4:30.
No traffic issues .. at all
3 hours and change to make the trip.
It’s 3 hours and 3 min with no traffic.

    Easily refilled gas tank.

    At my destination now. 🙂

The gloom and doom traffic stories yesterday were mostly false.

I’m monitored live traffic all day and the 3-hour and 3 minutes trip was never longer than 3 hours and 28 minutes.

    1. Just chatted with my niece in concord nh. I’m sharing baby news. She asked which way you went. Her husband is part of the highway dept in concord and the traffic has been horrific all weekend. They went Saturday night to a friend’s and traffic was backed from the 89 interchange to the nh liquor store rest area. It’s already backing at the hookset tolls

    1. What are those lower clouds underneath the approaching
upper cloud deck? It almost looks like that is snow cover. 🙂 🙂 🙂

  4. I have arrived in Burlington. 6 hour drive from South Dartmouth – really not bad at all – just stop and go and managing rush hour. The exit for Stowe was packed but I am now at Zero Gravity brewery and actually found a spot in the lot. Some thin high clouds – I hope that’s it!

    1. Yep we have a light cloud cover now. I’d say 1/3 or what I can see is blue. Although sun is breaking through without problem

  5. Watching this with the kids is thrilling. So far seven year old rilyn mac had it as a banana and now a croissant.

    1. Awesome Vicki !

I know, it was the excitement of the 6th graders that got me excited than I thought I’d be.

  6. Cait’s daughter who is in the Air National Guard and currently stationed in Little Rock, Arkansas just sent me this picture from a short time ago:

    Amazing!

Even here it is quite noticeable to the naked eye how dim the sun is getting.

    1. Wow. Amazing for sure.

The birds here got VERY vocal about 15 minutes before our maximum, then got quiet and are now getting back to normal. And it’s not as if I don’t closely watch the birds around our home

  7. Got a bit cloudy in Halifax so not sure how much it is affecting the viewing. I am stuck inside working.

  8. Clouds have moved in here. Saw the moon cover just over half the sun before the clouds moved in.

  9. Just a few high thin clouds here in Manchester CT but not obstructing anything.

Amazing what a weird look it is outside now with the tinted sun. Equally amazing that over 90% of it is covered and it is still as light out as it is.

    1. Indeed. I was amazed at how much light was still out there.
It was noticeably less light, but still plenty of light.

      Birds were acting strangely.

  10. The temp drop here was noticeable. May have only been a few degrees but big difference between how it feels with bright sun this time of year vs. heavily filtered sun.

I also wear transitional lenses and they did not even activate when I was just out there.

  11. Well, that was fun !

Now we wait for the cat 3 hurricane this summer that ends the New England hurricane drought.

  12. The skies cleared sun looked like a smile at the bottom. Temperature dropped. This was cool to see

  13. The thin cloud layer didn’t interfere here. Mr Cardinal who didn’t make any noise for 30 minutes is now singing loudly.

  14. Wasn’t going to look at the eclipse, but my son picked up a couple of extra pairs of the special glasses, so my wife and I looked for 5 minutes or so, just to catch the maximum. Those glasses worked really well!!!

  15. 2nd image is great. DO I see folks in the first image looking WITHOUT special glasses????????????

    WOW!!!

    1. Apparently, it’s safe to remove the glasses and look with the naked eye for the duration of 100% totality.

  16. I must say driving home from work after 3 from the city I did not really see anything & it definitely wasn’t darker . What was noticeable was there was no traffic .

  17. Sun was out in Sudbury w/some clouds to the north. But there was enough sun to notice the darkness that came from the eclipse. The sun was still out but it got weirdly kind of dark. I did not look at the sun. Noticed everything got very still. It did look vey strange out. The breeze seemed to stop. Then slowly things got back to normal.

    1. My kids and grandkids all noticed the dark. I wonder if I didn’t because everything is so much brighter anyway since the cataract surgery. It did get still here. It always amazes me how critters are so in tune with nature.

  18. Well, that was certainly worth the price of admission!!! I was excited all day at school and so happy that the weather cooperated for us all.

It was spectacular here in Taunton! The temp dropped five degrees from 65.8 to 60.8. I had a blast listening to the birds trying to figure it all out maximum darkness at 3:29. I even heard a rooster crow!

My photos came out okay. My filter worked, but it was so hard to figure out the focus on the lens. I wear Transition by-focal lenses and I couldn’t use my glasses because of the dark lenses and the mylar filter and I can’t see without the glasses!!!

Here are a couple of shots from our deck:

  19. Hard to describe totality on the shores of Lake Champlain in Burlington. Certainly worth the drive even though I89 is currently a parking lot. It was an awesome experience!

    1. Please share photos if you took some! Can’t wait to hear about TK’s adventures!!

    1. Mt. Mansfield was on my western horizon as I witnessed that eclipse. 🙂

  20. I think the thing I got reminded of and appreciation for today is the power of the sun.

7-8% or so and though the light was different, it was still enough light to create shadows and was very much daytime.

Just hits home that largely without it in winter, why it can get so cold and with it around so much in summer, it can get so hot and/or very humid.

    1. That’s a great point. We were at Hampton Beach today. When only the small crescent of the sun was visible, it looked like a slightly overcast day but with shadows.
