The Week Ahead

12:00AM

Boston MA and Seattle WA will be twins on opposite coasts Monday, both having a high temperature in the lower to middle 50s with wet weather. Boston’s soaker will be caused by continued influence of broad upper level low pressure and a couple of surface lows (one going out south of New England and another one backing down the coast from Maine and joining the other). In addition, minor to moderate coastal flooding is likely around the times of high tide, especially the Monday night high tide which will be astronomically high. The entire circulation will then sink south and east through midweek, and it will take much of the week to finally work out of its influence. The wettest weather of Monday will ease slightly Tuesday then moreso during the Wednesday-Friday period, but as more and more breaks in the clouds take place that will only set the stage for afternoon showers and thunderstorms to develop over inland locations mid to late week. Looking ahead to the weekend, further improvement and a warm-up should take place.

  1. So wheres this big coastal storm with the driving wind and rain that was forecast? All I see are a few clouds and horrible temps. Radar has basically nothing showing up.

    1. Not sure about anyone else, but neither Barry nor I were going for big rains with today’s event, just dismal and wet, drizzle with periods of rain (no big amounts), very cool, and a gusty NE wind (I went gusts as high as 30, most have been below that).

  2. There’s a thick mist and lots of mist, occasionally mixed with a heavier shower in Marshfield.

    1. thick mist and lots of mist……these Celtics games have to start sooner……thick mist and lots of fog.

      1. I second your thoughts on the Celtics, there’s no reason for the games to start at 8:30pm….struggling today

  3. In this blocking pattern, all is not lost…….

North of New England in eastern Canada is a fairly big ridge of high pressure. Under this high, it is warm !! It is currently in the mid to upper 60s all along the eastern shores of Hudson Bay. It is fairly clear and all of the snow cover is gone, all the way to the Davis Strait. The ice on Hudson Bay is melting quickly.

Once this block breaks, there’s going to be very little left in eastern Canada to contribute to cold shots. I have a feeling that once the 70s or warmer returns this weekend, them 70s are here to stay until they become common again in early to mid September. Thats not to say the Atlantic Ocean east of us cant provide a cool, raw day, but I think this block is the one thats effectively moderating many of the cold source regions to our north.

  4. I really don’t want to put the heat on in June, but it’s getting chilly in my house, and we still have a long way to go.

  5. John you asked me to repost the question about what I believe is nuts hedge or nuts edge grass. It’s just thick blades of grass that sprout up in the middle of my front lawn and grow faster than the regular grass. The lawn gets full afternoon sun. Thank you!

  6. I had to put on my heat late Saturday yet again for the second June in a row. The heat will probably stay on until midweek. Hopefully Thursday I can turn it back off for good (famous last words) for the gazillionth time so far this spring.

This type of pattern should be in April or mid-May at the latest. Back in the day, after Memorial Day warm temps pretty much ruled until late September/early October with maybe a brief cool down here and there in August. Maybe I am just remembering wrong?

TK…will 90 be in our future sometime next week?? Barry hinted at that last evening.

    1. My reservation in looking at 90 too far in advance is the fact that now we have very wet topsoil and vegetation. It takes quite a bit of work to get the ground to heat up under those conditions, so it will be hard to hit potential temperatures based on atmospheric conditions, for a while. We must take into account the ground moisture as well.

      1. Is tomorrow going to be a carbon copy of today or are we going to lose the mist/drizzle and just have a cloudy, cool day with chances of off and on showery weather?

        1. I think we keep very light to light drizzle much of the day, less soaking than today, and just bring patches of very light to light rain through from time to time. Basically today’s wetness cut in half. Halve it again on Wednesday but introduce some breaks inland when there will start being the threat of pop up showers/storms away from the ocean’s influence.

  7. Had to to turn heat in today!! Urghhhhh should not have to turn it on in June but oh well. Keeping the wife and newborn happy 🙂

  8. Does anyone have the proper equipment/means to see the transit of Venus tomorrow? I do not and judging from the forecast, it wouldn’t matter here anyway. It’ll be 115 years (I think 2117) that it happens again. But I believe it happened 8 years ago.

  9. The latest 14-day CPC outlook has NE right in the middle of the heat beyond mid-month, possibly the warmest in the CONUS in fact. Also, normal to below precip as well. FINALLY! 🙂

  10. We do not need anymore rain, enough is enough, we’ve had enough 🙂 11.56 in last 6 weeks

      1. Yea, I’m done with the rain too. Enough.
But, the rain’s not getting to me as much as the 51 degrees I have here. IN JUNE!!!! ARG

    1. We had 1.26 inch of rain since midnight Saturday. Not even close to enough to help here. And in between we had a lovely day.

        1. People are pumping there basements in some locales in eastern Mass, enough is enough, I think a relative dry period with minimal rain will be coming end of week which is great news, the river is again 6-8 inches over its banks, stay dry 🙂

          1. Yea, the Blackstone is running pretty high here. I can tell when we’ve fad enough when the catch basin next to my house starts to hold water; which it’s doing now. My neighborhood is really saturated at this point.

              1. Uxbridge has had exact same precip per yr as fram and they are not saturated. I assume you are not near there?

        2. We have had a touch over 2 inches of percip per month here this year. I can’t even begin to complain about it. Do I want people to pump their basements? Please do not even go there. Brad I can’t remember what area you are in – was it blackstone valley – or is that someone else. The West River is far below flood stage.

Charlie – pf course I don’t like a river in your area flooding – what river in your area is 6-8 inches above flood?

            1. Yes it’s minor and don’t expect it to become an issue though I’ve gotten 11.93 inches of rain since 04/23/12, before that it was like a dry dessert here, have a good night 🙂

            2. Yes Vicki I suspect that is what he is talking about, Quincy getting hit hard again. First all the muggins going on and now this. Don’t we have a blogger that lives there down by the beach. If so hope she is not affected by this.

                1. John from what I heard the tide gates in quincy may not have been working. It was a salt water creek/river that flooded. That’s just the initial report though.

  11. We have not had enough rain here in JP for anyone to be worried about basement flooding. Things are saturated but not close to causing any issues around these parts.

    1. Hadi I felt for you when you said you turned the heat on. I like to turn heat off in march but with our daughter and SIL and grandson here we leave it on in grandsons bedroom well past march. You have no choice with a newborn

  12. I am hoping that tomorrow is good. well at least the second half of the day so that my grandparents can get here safely

  13. first dock is at 8 feet
    second is at 12.
well above normal water levels. Arn’t we in drought

  14. Wow I saw the splashover in Scituate Harbor last night. Tom, do you know how Brant Rock and Humarock areas did?

    1. I don’t….but I’ll try to take a ride up there later today and see. I like to look and see the size of the rocks that have washed up into the Brant Rock Village. Sometimes its just tiny rocks one sees on the beach daily and though its not frequent, I’ve seen a flooding event that left boulders in the village.

      1. It looked as if that large parking lot behind the stores on the main street in Scituate Harbor had considerable water They showed a car with water that seemed to be above the bottom of the door opening. Most of the coverage I saw was at Scituate Harbor but I figured if it was over there, it was probably over all the way down Humarock, Rexhame, Brant Rock, etc.

  15. Both the GFS and EURO are showing a very hot day, 850 mb temp wise anyway, about a week from today. As was pointed out yesterday by TK, ground moisture may temper things a bit, but it looks quite warm.

  16. Matt I have a question for you. We have a fox in the neighborhood. I haven’t seen it but the neighbors say it is gray and big – about the height of our neighbors boxer. Is that unusually tall for a fox? It was out this morning when the younger kids were heading down the street to the bus stop.

    1. We saw a very large coyote cross the road in front of our house this weekend. It happened during the middle of the day which worries me. We never let the kids play outside alone (Too Young) or without our Lab with us.

      1. I was wondering if this is a coyote. The woman who saw it as her granddaughter walked by said it was as large as her granddaughter’s boxer but it had shorter legs. Other neighbors who have seen it said it’s bigger than they expect too but is gray

    2. It might be a coyote. The last time i heard there are no grey fox around in southern new england expecially across eastern mass. see if you can get pics. or have niebors get pics. Make sure dogs or cats are indoors. Young foxes 2 years or younger can have a grey coat. but if you are saying that it is large then it is probably not a young fox but a coyote. Make sure no one gets to close to it.

        1. I’d say a standard size boxer – a lot larger than my Cairn Terrier. What was worrisome is our next door neighbor’s 10 year old was walking from her home down the street three houses to her grandmother’s home. The fox was in the driveway of a house in between and she walked right by it before her grandmother saw it.

  17. Vicki the answer to your question is it could be any number of things. Your idea could be true. It could also be weeds, rygrass, crabgrass. could be anything vicki. One suggestion is that you clip the longer blade and bring to a good nursery. You could also go on the computer typing in some of the names above with pictures and try to match it up. It may be tough.

    1. John thank you GREAT idea to take to a nursery. Odd that I always think to take my plants that have problems and didn’t think of the grass!!!!!

  18. As of today, Logan is reporting 6.07″ below normal. While there probably isn’t a fire danger anytime soon with the rain we have had the past few days, I don’t know if technically we are still considered to be in a “drought” situation.

TK & others…does the amount of deficit/surplus of precip alone determine whether a given area is in a drought or not?

    1. It is determined both by precipitation and soil conditions (as Matt stated). Of course there is a direct correlation between precipitation and soil moisture, but they also look at both top soil and sub soil moisture in determining the overall status. So it is somewhat simple, yet slightly complex.

  19. Has anyone notice leaves changing yellow to red ? I have a few trees in the marsh that are changing colors on the top of them.

  20. Hi all!

A bit late, but we are updated!
