DAYS 1-5 (MAY 5-9)
Spring in our part of the world is not all sunshine, warm temperatures, blooming flowers, and singing birds. Yes, we get any and all of that, and spring can have many nice days, but it also is a season of change, and while we get pushes of warm air from warmer parts of the country to the south and southwest in preview of summer, we still have a pretty cold ocean next to us, and often still some snow left to melt in parts of nearby Canada where some pretty cold air masses can still reside. This mix makes for volatility, and depending on the pattern, sometimes stretches of similar weather for many days. While there is some nice weather in this 5-day forecast, it’s limited, so pay attention if you want to make some plans to enjoy it…
High pressure that kept us fair and cool with varying amounts of clouds Friday and Saturday has given way and now we’re seeing things moving more from west to east across the region, which will be the case for several days. We start out by seeing a trough and frontal system move into and across the region today and tonight with a cloudy sky. Most of the wet weather from this system in our area will occur during the midday and afternoon hours, into tonight. It pushes off to the east early Monday with maybe a lingering shower. And while high pressure begins to build in on Monday, just enough instability will be around to maybe trigger one more brief passing shower in a few locations during the afternoon hours. The pick of the coming week is going to be an easy one: Tuesday. That day, high pressure builds in and we’ll have a mild air mass in place. Away from any direct cooling influences of the ocean, many areas will see high temperatures of 70 or greater that day. But it won’t last. On Wednesday, a disturbance and frontal boundary will move through the region from northwest to southeast, returning unsettled weather to the region. We may get a break for part of Thursday if high pressure to the north is strong enough.
TODAY: Cloudy. A few showers possible mainly west of I-95 midday hours. Widespread showers arrive from west to east mid through late afternoon. Highs 52-59. Wind SE 5-15 MPH.
TONIGHT: Cloudy with widespread showers this evening. Mostly cloudy with showers diminishing west to east overnight. Areas of fog forming. Lows 48-55. Wind SE-S up to 10 MPH.
MONDAY: Clouds and showers lingering in eastern MA and RI early, otherwise a sun/cloud mix with an additional shower possible in the mid to late afternoon hours. Highs 57-64 South Coast / Cape Cod, 65-72 elsewhere. Wind S-SW 5-15 MPH.
MONDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 48-55. Wind W up to 10 MPH.
TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs ranging widely from 55-60 Islands & Cape Cod warming as you go west and north until 75-80 west of the I-95 belt. Wind W to SW up to 10 MPH but coastal sea breezes developing.
TUESDAY NIGHT: Clouds increase. Lows 51-58. Wind variable under 10 MPH.
WEDNESDAY: Cloudy. Good chance of showers. Highs 58-65 in the morning, then cooling in the afternoon. Wind variable becoming E 5-15 MPH.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers and drizzle in the evening. Lows 46-51. Wind NE up to 10 MPH.
THURSDAY: Mostly cloudy to partly sunny. Highs 55-62, coolest coast. Wind NE-N up to 10 MPH.
DAYS 6-10 (MAY 10-14)
A cool and unsettled stretch of weather is expected during the May 10-12 time period as a series of weak low pressure systems pass over and south of the region. High pressure builds back in with improving weather later in the period.
DAYS 11-15 (MAY 15-19)
Large scale pattern should feature upper level low pressure in the US Northeast and southwestern Canada, but weakening later in the period. This pattern would be slightly unsettled but overall drier, and limit the ability to warm significantly.
Leaf-out in progress more rapidly now.
This, combined with some upcoming wet weather, should pretty much put an end to SNE’s main fire season. Not too many issues this time!
“Leaf-out” … love it!
We are a little ahead of Woburn here. ๐
Maples are fully out while the oaks are lagging behind and are about 1/2 way there . ๐
Good morning and thank you TK
Excellent discussion!
Another dismal May day, so what else is new. You explained very well the reasons why.
Ocean temp: 47.1 (Boston buoy)
I think it is time to elevate Swayman to hero status. Bruins LOSE without him!!!! He certainly carried this team on his back!! He’s some goalie that’s for sure.
I admit I haven’t been much of a hockey fan for sone time. I used to be a rabid fan and went to many games and played the game often, even in a few leagues. I really can’t expkain why I have drifted away. Same deal with baseball.
Sway was definitely the series MVP for the Bruins. Can’t even debate that one. Yes Pasta scored the goal to win the series, but we expect Pasta to put the puck in the net. Sway gave them every chance to stay around long enough to have a shot, and thankfully that “shot” went in.
Indeed!!! I hope they can loosen up and play to their potential the rest of the way.
To TK, a short thread was created yesterday on this blog starting at 1:33 PM by me. Could you chime in on this blog as to what the measurement, being discussed, actually means? Only if you have time. Thank you.
In short, is the resulting measurement 1) distance to the storm, 2) center of the storm, 3) where the lightning struck or 4) where the thunder occurred? And yes, some of these overlap.
Not TK, but imho it is the distance to where thunder occurred, After all it is that thunder that was heard, not necessarily thunder at the center of a line or cluster.
Your response seems to really make sense. (Of course, now that I have said that, it’ll be something else. :))

Thanks TK !
Thanks, TK.
Thanks TK
Could we have Boston and New York in the conference finals of both hockey and basketball? I think there is a good chance to see that for basketball. Hockey we will see. The Rangers did exactly what a championship team should do against a bad opponent by sweeping them. Hurricanes is going to be a lot tougher. I will be tuned in a 4pm today for game on of that series and 730 tomorrow night for the Knicks.
Thanks Tk . Sway was 100% MVP for that series hands down !!! I will also give The Toronto goalie a huge thumbs up as he had a phenomenal game last night on short notice . I donโt think they will start Sway next series as I think Ulmark had the best of them during regular season , time will tell . Hard to sit a very Red Hot goalie in my opinion
Thanks, TK!
Feliz Cinco de Mayo!!
(Maple) “Leaf-out” of the playoffs. ๐
My favorite sporting events are the NHL playoffs, particularly Game 7s!
Haha. Good.
Thanks TK.
Thanks TK. I witnessed the game in person last evening with my brother. An experience we will always remember!
Awesome!
Wow. As Iโve said, I donโt typically follow hockey. But you all peaked my interest. What a game. I cannot imagine watching in person. I also cannot imagine your emotions settling enough to sleep once home.
Oh yes very high emotions watching it in person. I actually slept like a baby last night and it was much needed.
๐
Awesome. On both counts.
Thanks, TK.
Through work I’ve gotten to meet several colleagues who are Torontonians (a nice city, by the way). They’re very much “Leafs Forever” fans. And what I can say is that it’s really hard to be a Leafs fan. It has the pre-2004 Red Sox fan vibe.
They have not won a Stanley Cup since 1967.
And haven’t won a playoff series against the Bruins since 1959!
Thank you, TK. Great writeup.
Thanks TK. I have a lot of hoopla later this week for my high school reunion. How heavy do you think the rain will be from Wednesday to Saturday? Hopefully just the lighter stuff.
Sometimes those can be awesome!
Last one I attended was our 50th in 2015.
So many former classmates have passed on. So sad.
These events get smaller and smaller as time goes on.
Enjoy!!!!!
This will be my 50th and hoping most folks are well. Friday is a memorial for several who have passed away which is why I am rooting for light rain only
Sorry to hear that. We have lost so many, I can barely count.
Hope you have good weather and a great time.
I have a big Friday as well I need dry day
Enjoy. 50 is a huge milestone.
We have a way to go,for leaf out but we are getting there. And the Lupines my son planted at the top of the hill in 2016 returned. They were scarce last year and between too much rain Anan not enough rain, we lost many of the wildflowers he also planted
Lupines not easy to see in the second link

Down to a raw 52 from a high of 55. A few showers.
Flash flooding in the Dutch Antilles, specifically Curaรงao: https://twitter.com/joepjanssencom/status/1787094947708998038
Can’t believe the Sox are beating Minnesota. Leading 3-1 top of the 8th, bases loaded and 1 out.
Hope they win it. Twins have been hot to say the least.
Make it 5-1
Did i say 7-1?
The Red Sox are playing well, especially considering all their injuries. Though they lost 2 out of 3 to the Twins, they halted Minnesota’s winning streak at 12. Moreover, the Sox have been playing good baseball against some of the better teams. They’ll have to continue this as they head to Atlanta. The Sox are in the middle of a prolonged stretch of facing tough competition.
Longshot… Apologizes for not being able to reply to you sooner. Today was the choir concert my son is involved in, and I run the live stream. Set-up, concert, reception, break-down, is a nearly 6 hour ordeal. ๐
What’s being measured in the 5 seconds to a mile is the basic distance that the lightning strike was from where you are. They say “this is where the storm is” but that’s only somewhat true. That’s where the lightning strike is. The storm itself is probably far larger so that you could have lightning strikes several miles apart or even many miles apart in the same storm. ๐
Thanks TK! I like the way you soften what is a gloomy forecast after Tuesday. I am in NY tending to my 84 year old father who has been hospitalized with sepsis. Not pretty. After a raw cold day here along the ocean it is supposed to hit 70s here tomorrow and maybe 80 by Weds.
Sorry to hear about your dad, Jimmy. I will pray for him, you and your family. Hang in there!
Thank you Captain!
Best wishes to you and your father.
Thank you TK! I told him about the fog coming off the ocean – and he joked that anytime it was foggy he always hoped the pilots from JFK were paying attention when taking off! LOL!
So sorry to hear your dad is I get hospital. Thoughts and prayers for him, his medical team and you โค๏ธ
*In the hospital
Thank you Vicki – aging is a fascinating process – challenges and beauty at the same time
Thinking of you all JJ ! One day at a time
Thank you South Shore!
Hoping for the best, JJ.
My apologies ……… Jimmy B
