Monday May 20 2024 Forecast (7:45AM)

DAYS 1-5 (MAY 20-24)

This work week’s weather pattern will be quite different from the one we saw last week. Today, high pressure builds to our south and will strengthen there into midweek, while an upper level ridge builds along the East Coast. The transition today may seem a bit slow to get started as the region starts the day blanketed by clouds along with some patches of fog, but improvement will come as the clouds begin to erode, though they may hang on longest over Cape Cod. Tuesday and Wednesday will present the feel of early summer away from this ocean influence, and sunshine will be abundant both days. Tuesday and/or Wednesday you may notice some cloudiness in the western and northwestern sky later in the day, and this will be the result of upstream showers and thunderstorms generated by the sun’s heating and some instability closer to a frontal boundary moving into and through the Great Lakes region. We won’t hear from that front until Thursday when it moves into and across New England, bringing the chance of showers and thunderstorms. It’s a bit early to call how widespread and heavy these may be, so check updates over the next few days as I fine-tune this part of the forecast. Friday’s forecast is a bit of a question mark. The pattern reminds me of one that leaves Thursday’s cold front just to our south and allows a wave of low pressure to ripple along it. This may result in the chance of some rainfall on that day. If it doesn’t materialize and the front chugs further offshore and high pressure is strong enough, all bets are off on the rain chance and Friday is fair and pleasant. I am leaning toward the wet forecast right now, but don’t be surprised if this changes…

TODAY: Fog patches until mid morning, otherwise a sun/cloud mix, with clouds most dominant over Cape Cod. Highs 55-60 Islands / Cape Cod, 60-65 South Coast and immediate eastern coastal areas, 65-70 I-95 belt, 70-75 west of I-95 belt. Wind variable up to 10 MPH becoming SE.

TONIGHT: Clear. Lows 51-58. Wind SE to S under 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Sunshine dominates, but some clouds arrives from the west late. Highs range widely from near 60 Cape Cod to 80-87 I-95 belt westward. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy evening, then clear. Lows 52-59. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Sunny until late day when a few clouds return from the west. Highs range from near 65 Cape Cod / South Coast to 83-90 I-95 westward. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 55-62. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

THURSDAY: Variably cloudy. Chance of showers and thunderstorms. Highs 68-75, cooler South Coast. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Clouds linger. Lows 50-57. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY: Cloudy. Chance of rain. Highs 58-65. Wind NE 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (MAY 25-29)

Outlook is for fair weather 2/3 of the Memorial Day Weekend with the next shower threat potentially on May 27, but may hold off until the day after. Fair weather returns end of period. More seasonable temperatures but somewhat variable.

DAYS 11-15 (MAY 30 โ€“ JUNE 3)

Last couple days of May look fair, early part of June maybe a shower threat. Temperatures variable, but close to normal overall with no major extremes.

  1. Good morning and thank you TK

currently 56 here and still cloudy

    Ocean temp 52.5 (Boston buoy)

    1. Going to take a little while to bust up that overcast, but it’ll happen.

  2. Thanks TK !

Teachers are going to have fun keeping students focused Tuesday and Wednesday.

    1. Might as well set up the slip and slide outside the school now ………………………..

  3. First legit clearing Cape Ann.
RI is getting more sun as well.
Immediate city of Boston is breaking a bit…

    1. And who said that? Doesn’t appear to be breaking outside
      of my Window. ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚
      Let’s hope SOON!!!!!

  4. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TK!!!

You’re FAST approaching another milestone birthday.
If I am still around, I’ll have a good chuckle when you do. ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. I sure hope so, but I ain’t no young chicken. Next birthday in a few months, I turn 77. I can’t believe that. It was only yesterday I was playing little league baseball. ๐Ÿ™‚

          1. SHHHHH! I am Dreading that day, should I make it that far. At this age, one never knows. ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Well, I don’t see breaks in the clouds, but I do see it brightening out there, so I guess there is still hope. ๐Ÿ™‚

It has made it to 60, so the temperature is responding to the brightening cloud cover. ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. It’s currently 49.2F atop Mt Washington.

Especially inland, temps should zoom soon.

Even at the coast, that kind of warmth aloft should get us into the 60s, in areas that eventually get some sun.

  7. Thank you and Happy Birthday TK!

I am a bit perplexed why I keep hearing significant heat and humidity from one channel. Since when is the 80โ€™s โ€œsignificant heatโ€?

  8. Interesting how Route 128 has now evolved into โ€œI-95 belt.โ€

Has the Route 128 designation totally disappeared from the highway itself? ๐Ÿ™

    1. I think it becomes 128 into Gloucester where 95 splits to head to nh and me

I still call it 128 sometimes

      1. It will FOREVER be 128 to me!!!

I can remember when they were first building 128.
I can remember riding on the OLD 128. ๐Ÿ™‚

        So weird!

  9. I’ll be 69 in September speaking of birthday’s. I’ve been a member of planet fitness since June of 2007. I go a minimum of 5 days a week faithfully even when I’m down in Sarasota. I realize some people can’t go because of health issues if you can go to a gym it’s the absolute best way to keep ahead of father time. The only meds I take are a couple of tylenol for normal old age aches and pains once in a while.
Have a great happy and healthy day everyone.

    1. Well, we have a few “old timers” here. ๐Ÿ™‚
It’s great for remembering storms past (If we can!) ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. Thanks, TK, and Happy Birthday!

    Sophomore MCASs tomorrow and Wednesday.
    No Slip and Slides!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

18 more days of school! Last day of school is a Friday, June 14! No more emergency days. Don’t want to come back for Day 180 on a Monday!

Class of 2024: Last full day is today; Two half days: tomorrow and Wednesday. Graduation: Saturday evening, June 1.

  11. Amtrak still calls it Route 128, as does the MBTA. In fact, it’s an official stop. In Amtrak lingo they call it “the route.”

    1. Funny, come Wednesday, I’ll WISHING the wind was EAST!
      ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

The way things go around here.

    1. My only issue is that wouldn’t we have heard about an approaching comet? I never heard a thing.

      Hmmm

  12. Thank you to all who added birthday wishes since my last thank you HAHA!

    Re: 128.
That route used to go right up the street I live in before it was “moved” to the highway when it was built. I still use the designation for that area at times even when it’s I-95, certainly there’s no confusion to be had once you pass the split in Peabody / Danvers area and head up toward Cape Ann. ๐Ÿ™‚ But, I’ve gotten quite used to not dwelling on it being 128 passing through my area. I-95 works just fine, and I prefer to use it on my forecasts for people outside the area or new to the area who may be reading.

    1. That’s understandable, but to me it’s all a joke, because 95 STOPS in CANTON and picks up again in PEABODY.
rt. 128 connects the 2. (Unless one trudges through the city)

I 95 was to pass right through JP, but was stopped by
the citizens as there would have been simply TOO MUCH
      disruption.

Thus, the confusing mess we have today.

      ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. Would your house had become a victim if those plans had continued as scheduled? As it is, much of Roxbury is now gone because of that highway.

        โ€œSTOP I-95โ€ฆPEOPLE BEFORE HIGHWAYSโ€

I remember that message graffiti well!

  13. Re 128. I agree with JPD. At the split it is even more confusing

I remember when it changed. I also remember route 2 when it was a single lane and some was still dirt. When it was announced that 2 would widen, a builder in the hillcrest section of Belmont constructed several gambrel homes. Quickly. Thinking theyโ€™d be taken when roadwork began and heโ€™d make money. Joke was on him. Houses are all still there. I often wonder how theyโ€™ve held up.

  14. https://www.pivotalweather.com/model.php?rh=2024052012&fh=384

This might not even be tropical and TK has stated the GFS overcooks tropical activity early in the season.

I will say I have read some chatter about watching for a Kelvin Wave, I think it is, propogating westward in early to mid June and maybe a chance at early season development in the Gulf/Caribbean/western Atlantic.

I may not even be describing this correctly as it is over my head.

  15. Maybe some of you have mentioned it, but there is a part of Rte. 128 (I still call that whole area 128 that is Rte. 95? I was born and brought up until 12 yrs. old or so to me I too think of it as 128} that I always get lost in. Coming back from the Canton/Stoughton area there are 2 signs that confuse me. When I have tried to head back towards Framingham or Sudbury, one sign says North to Boston; or Rte. 95. Somehow I end up heading south. Not sure of exactly what the signs say now but I always ended up going the wrong way. Haven’t been out that way in a long time so I don’t know what’s there now.

  16. Pictures from Hawaii won’t be up until tomorrow. Altogether, before I remove the blurry ones, I have 1319 total between my camera and my phone. It will take approximately 4.5 hours to upload them all to my Google site. Since I am working early tomorrow AM (covering for my boss, so yes, I will be on WSAR in the morning), I will be back in bed before the upload finishes.

A little background about the trip though (TK already read this on Facebook). This trip was a gift for my better half, celebrating our 15 years together, but also ended up being a gift for myself. One year ago yesterday, after complaining of a little shortness of breath, and my doctor not liking the results of a stress test, I went in for a cardiac catheterization. A simple procedure to see what was causing the issues. Well, it wasn’t so simple. After discovering a 99% blockage of the “Widowmaker” artery, the doc quickly put 2 stents in. (If you end up with a total blockage, your odds of survival are 1 in 8, unless you are in a medical facility already, then it’s only 1 in 4). I obviously needed to make some changes to get my diabetes under control, and the biggest one I made was to stop drinking regular soda. Haven’t had one since that day. Now, I still drink Zero Sugar A&W Root Beer and Sprite Zero at times, but no more Coke/Pepsi etc (which I used to have at least a few times a day). Things are much better now, and hopefully will continue to improve.

    1. Went through the same thing in my mid 40s, eight years ago now.

Widow maker, they may have told me how blocked but I don’t remember. It was blocked enough to need 1 stent.

Congrats on the changes you made, glad you are doing well and continued best health wishes going forward !!

      1. Coke/Pepsi a FEW times a day?? Even in my younger years one was usually aplenty. Occasionally 2 at most. ๐Ÿ™‚

            1. I believe soda sales overall have plunged significantly over the years. Most people are drinking healthy, even the younger folks.

  17. Happy Birthday TK!

How many years โ€œyoungโ€? Have you joined some of us old timers or do you still have a ways to go?

  18. It’s 84 in Montreal, CA and ONLY 59 at good ole Logan Airport in Boston. Go figure.

63 here in JP with that EAST WIND!!!!

  19. TK – Are we now done with the โ€œocean chillโ€ pattern once and for all? Or are we still vulnerable?

NOT liking 67 dp for Thursday! >:-(

      1. How about this? Will it do?

        file:///C:/Users/dhinchliffe.DESKTOP-CRUAL81/Downloads/middle-finger.svg

  20. 63 here now and we barely touched 634 about 1/2 hour ago, but I do believe that was a round up from 63.5 or 63.6. ๐Ÿ™‚

  21. Will the EAST wind hold for tomorrow as well?

NOT forecast to, but around here, who knows?????

    1. I saw that this am and forgot to ask here. Thank you, Joshua. June 3 is my maternal grandmothers birthday which makes it extra special for me

    1. 7-1 with a 2.22 ERA. Why canโ€™t we get pitchers like that? Tied for 3rd for best record too.
