Sunday September 8 2024 Forecast (7:19AM)

DAYS 1-5 (SEPTEMBER 8-12)

Low pressure passes to our north today but to its south, we’ll be in a westerly flow of dry air with fair weather. We still have upper level low pressure to pass north of us with some cyclonic flow in the jet stream through Monday. With a little less suppressive dry air Monday, and the approach of a trough, we’ll see more in the way of diurnal clouds popping up after today is a sunnier day with less in the way of diurnal cloud development. By Tuesday, this feature is beyond our region and high pressure builds in, then slides to the south and east, with fair weather and a warming trend through midweek.

TODAY: Sunny morning. Sun and passing clouds afternoon. Highs 68-75. Wind W 5-15 MPH, few higher gusts.

TONIGHT: Mainly clear. A fog patch can form over interior lower elevations. Lows 47-54, coolest interior low spots. Wind W under 10 MPH.

MONDAY: Sunny early, then intervals of sun and clouds. Highs 68-75. Wind W 5-15 MPH, a few higher gusts.

MONDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy evening. Clear overnight. Lows 47-54. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 70-77. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Clear. Interior lower elevation fog patches. Lows 51-58. Wind SW up to 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Sunny. Highs 75-82. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Clear. Interior lower elevation fog patches. Lows 52-59. Wind SW up to 10 MPH.

THURSDAY: Sunny. Highs 78-85. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (SEPTEMBER 13-17)

High pressure brings fair and mild to warm weather much of this period but may yield to unsettled weather briefly by late period.

DAYS 11-15 (SEPTEMBER 18-22)

The large scale pattern still indicates a tendency to be dry overall, but there are some signs of a more southerly air flow, higher humidity, and increased shower chances on some medium range guidance. NOTE however that even with the typical uncertainty in this time frame, there’s been a lot of inconsistency on guidance, rendering it even less reliable than would be usual for this time distance.

Guidance is guidance. This is one example of one type.

Adding to that, the last 3 GFS runs have been extremely inconsistent the further out in time you go regarding the details of systems simulated to impact our weather. Use caution when using operational model runs. Where have we heard this before?

Also, I mentioned this previously, and I’m glad someone is talking about this stuff … the name for it is “science”.

  2. It’s been cool lately. The eastern part of MA had a cooler than normal August, and the early days of September in Boston (the first week) has averaged 1 degree F below normal, after a warm day on September 1st was followed by six consecutive cooler-than-normal days.

If you long for the feel of summer, you may recall I mentioned we’d probably see a return episode of that around mid month. Looks like a solid stretch of above normal temperatures later in the coming week, lasting into the final days of astronomical summer. Note: The autumnal equinox takes place two weeks from today, Sunday September 22, at 8:43 a.m. EDT.

When will it happen next? Because it will happen again.
And we won’t be ready. People who complain about partly cloudy days at the beach will never bitch about ordinary weather again after the next CAT 3 hits New England. We won’t be ready for what will happen.

      1. I agree. We won’t be close to ready.

Perhaps the Portland Gale and maybe even the perfect storm could be added to that list.

Even places who were more recently impacted by 3 or 4 storms and who are also dealing with ocean rise are blocking out the memory of the tremendous damage these storms cause.

        1. Those 3 were specifically mentioned because they are the only Cat 3 or stronger Hurricanes to make landfall in New England/Long Island. There’s no other storms to add to the list.

  3. My Woburn Tanners opened their football season with an at-home win 26-9 over the Acton-Boxborough Revs (formerly the Colonials). Nice win to start the season. Up next, a trip all the way out to Longmeadow next Friday evening!
The following 6 regular season opponents await…

    Burlington
    Reading
    Melrose
    Lexington
    Belmont
    Arlington

A couple weeks of playoffs follow.
Thanksgiving game will be the traditional match up with Winchester, on the road this year.

  4. Thanks, TK.

My Middleborough Sachems edged the Apponequet Lakers, 14-7, on Thursday afternoon. Because of the town and county’s EEE restrictions, MHS will have to play all afternoon games in all outdoor sports until the first frost/freeze. Fields have to be cleared 30 minutes before sunset.

The Sachems play Holliston Friday at 3:30 when the afternoon temps are forecasted to be in the mid-80s. Lots of leg cramping in the second half.

My first day of teaching ever was 42 years ago yesterday, September 7, 1983, when the high temp was a blazing 93 degrees. Here I am, a very nervous, very sweaty first-year teacher in a full suit in an old, unairconditioned building. 🙂

The driest month ever in Taunton was September, 1941 at 0.02″.

Did Boston get any measurable precip last night? We got 0.05″.

Go Pats in Jerod Mayo era!

    1. So far no restrictions here. All our games are Friday nights except one, Saturday October 5 at 1PM hosting Reading.

Our Thanksgiving rivals, Winchester, used to be the Sachems but they had to change the name – and the name that won: “Red & Black”. Not really fond of using the team colors as the team name, but it is what it is. Woburn (and Peabody) are the Tanners because of the history of the tanneries in both places. I could come up with some good team names for Winchester in place of their old name. Like perhaps the Winchester Mystics, for the Mystic watershed that is a prominent part of their town with a series of lakes feeding the Mystic River.

Arlington uses the name Spy Ponders.

    2. CF .. regarding Sep 7 1983. That was our first day of school (I was in 11th grade) and the old Woburn High School had no AC either. It was sweltering in there…

Boston’s high that day was 92, one of FIVE days of 90+ that month including a blazing high of 99 on 9/11/1983. One third of the days of the month were 85 or hotter for high temps and the month finished 5 degrees above normal. We’ve never had a September that hot since.

    3. I groan when I see summer of 1983 mentioned. I was still in my first trimester then. I cannot imagine starting school with those temps.

    1. Go Pats! Like the Sox, I don’t have super high expectations, but I do think the team will entertain us. It’s a rebuilding phase. All teams have them. We’ll see where this one takes us down the road, but it’s going to be a patience game that’s needed to be played to get there…

      1. I’m uncharacteristically struggling with following the pats. It has nothing to do with winning or losing which should not be a surprise. I’ve been vocal about my reasons so they should not be a surprise either. I’m going to tune in and see if I can work past those reasons.

        1. I hear ya!

Semi-related note: My mother is watching the game but she’s been a bit out of it the last week because of a very powerful diuretic they had her on basically robbed her of actual sleep. Now they cut waaaay back so she should start to get some R.E.M. in. It’s been impacting everything. But she’s coherent enough to want to watch football this afternoon. I just had to get the right channel on for her. She had a different game on. 😉

          1. Oh darn. I’m glad they regulated the diuretic but sorry she was on something that strong. Praying for continued improvement.

I was half talking to my grandson and half watching the game when he pointed out I was also watching the wrong game. Please tell your mom she isn’t alone.

I like Brissett so that may hold my interest.

            1. Thank you. This is probably the roughest shape she’s been in since her stroke, but honestly I’m not surprised at anything I have seen thus far. She’s 92 and completely exhausted. One step at a time…

Haha I’ll tell my mom about the game. She’ll get a chuckle out of the fact you both did it. 🙂 Enjoy whatever game you end up on .. heh!

              1. How difficult for your mom. And for you. ❤️

I stuck with the pats game but had a fun distraction when I came across Mac’s mom’s cookbook. You may have seen my post on FB

  5. I like the Pats away uniforms (white top, dark blue bottom) much better than the home set-up.

I also wish the NHL would go back to white at home, dark on the road. I love it much better that way.

  6. Very nice day in Cape Breton Island. Mostly cloudy, temperature near 70, little bit of a breeze. Great day for walking around near the harbor. Leaving Halifax last night? Not so nice. 18 foot seas once we got out into the Atlantic, to go along with winds of 30-40 mph gusting to 50 mph. It was a rough night. On to PEI tomorrow!

  7. Vicki, I feel very tired, but no fever, less cough and improved sinuses. I’ll be back to normal by Thanksgiving … Just kidding.

Listening to Jerrod Mayo’s presser was SUCH a breath of fresh air. He actually answers questions, interacts in a friendly way with the media and just seems like a genuinely nice person. I’ll take that any day over the Belichick we’ve seen and listened to since 2019. When BB was winning, I sort of reluctantly accepted his awful demeanor (though I never liked his personality or his flawed character). But it got very stale once he became an average (at best) coach.

  8. Jerrod Mayo is the first Patriots rookie head coach to win the opening game since 1991.

Who was the previous coach? The year 1991 doesn’t exactly pop out as anything special off the top of my head.

  9. Today gave me hope for the Patriots future.
    1. Patriots defense was awesome, there were a couple of drives that they messed up but that I go towards just good plays by Cinci.
    2. Gonzo and white are silent beasts
    2. The WRs and TEs look good
    3. Stephenson look good

Unfortunately, that oline just seems to not get things done. Also I noticed something, any time they put Lowe in Brisett got lit up. Been saying for a while he needs to go onto the practice squad until he can pass block

  10. Hanging in there, slight fever on and off today. Cough and sore throat are still there, the biggest issue is fatigue and poor sleep.

    Thanks for checking.

  11. Pats D looked good. That’s what’s going to get them wins.

Commanders defense was awful, though can’t be worse than last year when they ranked 31st in point allowed and 31st in yards allowed 🙂 Daniels looked good, but getting hurt is my biggest worry. Can’t take too many hits.
