Tuesday October 1 2024 Forecast (7:07AM)

DAYS 1-5 (OCTOBER 1-5)

October is here, and the weather pattern is still basically the same – blocking – but there are signs of it finally breaking down in the coming days. First, we stay in a light easterly air flow today which shifts to southerly Wednesday as we lose the influence of the combo of high pressure to the north and low pressure to the south and a trough and frontal boundary move in from the west Wednesday. This may produce a rain shower, but we stay generally rain-free these days, as well as Thursday and Friday as high pressure builds in, then sinks to the south. This will initiate a warm up. Saturday, a passing cold front may bring a few rain showers, but timing looks early – the chance existing through midday, and no “wash-out” weather.

TODAY: Foggy areas early, otherwise mainly cloudy. Highs 62-69. Wind E up to 10 MPH.

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Areas of fog. Lows 50-57. Wind SE up to 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. Chance of a rain shower. Highs 65-72. Wind S 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Patchy fog in lowest elevations. Lows 48-55. Wind W up to 10 MPH.

THURSDAY: Partly cloudy. Highs 60-67. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Patchy fog. Lows 45-52. Wind SW under 10 MPH.

FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 70-77. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 55-62. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY: Variably cloudy. Chance of rain showers through midday. Highs 68-75. Wind SW 5-15 MPH shifting to W.

DAYS 6-10 (OCTOBER 6-10)

Quasi-zonal pattern – mostly westerly flow with weak blocking holding on. High pressure brings fair weather many of these days. Interruptions October 7 and possibly October 10 with unsettled weather systems.

DAYS 11-15 (OCTOBER 11-15)

Mostly zonal pattern. Brief shower threats in an otherwise mostly dry pattern. A significant visit of chilly air from Canada becomes more likely.

  1. So October has arrived. Time to start thinking about the upcoming Winter season. Not that I have anything to say about it at this time. 🙂

      1. Thanks for asking!

They are safely settled for now two hours away where there wasn’t the devastation that Buncombe County experienced. I don’t think they’ll be able to return home until there’s running water again, which could be a while.

  2. Jimmy Carter was born in GA 100 years ago today. From heather cox richardsons daily post. “According to the Atlanta Constitution of that date, he arrived just after the worst wind and rainstorm of the year passed off to sea. His home state of Georgia, along with North Carolina and Virginia, sustained significant damage, with railroad tracks and bridges washed out, crops damaged, and at least seven lives lost. “

100 years later we know what happened here

  3. Thanks, TK.

Vicki, thank you for posting about Jimmy Carter. I’ve read and written a lot about him. He may be the most productive former president post-presidency that we’ve ever had. His efforts to improve the lives of the less fortunate both here at home and abroad are so admirable. His wife was also a doer, always in pursuit of noble objectives such as reducing the stigma attached to mental health and improving health insurance coverage of psychological and psychiatric services. She was a pioneer in this area.

  4. Back from a mom visit – doing well except still have to do some diuretic tweaking so she can sleep better again. They can’t seem to take my advice on that one… Otherwise she’s doing well!

    Weather thoughts…
Not much to add. Long recovery from Helene continues. The interaction of this system with an anomalous trough and the size of the storm itself squeezing out the heaviest rain where it did was just a coincidentally bad situation. Again we see these events in areas that since the last one have been built up much more, so there is more to impact. I brought this up recently even with our own coastline now vs. 1938. No comparison, actually.

Locally / regionally… Today behaving as expected. Tomorrow’s cold front is a nearly non-event with no more than a brief shower for a few locations. Timing of the next systems looks a bit faster. The cold front Saturday may actually come through before dawn and that day may end up fair and rather mild (not alot of cold behind that particular front). Monday’s system is dry on some guidance, wetter on others. I do think it’ll be a wetter system than Saturday’s, but it’s a long way off yet…

The overall pattern is still dry.

  5. For those of you who may be interested in my Forbes articles, my latest is on JD Vance’s proposed changes to health insurance and what this could imply for people with pre-existing conditions. See link below. This is likely to come up at this evening’s debate.

By the way, I do NOT write political hit pieces. Ever. While I strongly disagree with Vance’s policies and some of his (odd and disconcerting) statements on women, I respect his intelligence and presume he isn’t ill-willed. And so, I analyze these issues from as neutral a place as one can be.
