Monday October 21 2024 Forecast (7:15AM)

DAYS 1-5 (OCTOBER 21-25)

High pressure continues its dominance of our weather through Wednesday, resulting in fair weather and above normal temperatures. A southward shift of the high allows more of a westerly breeze today and with the polar jet stream also a little closer to here, we’ll see high clouds stream across the sky, especially in the northern half of the WHW forecast area, which may filter or dim the sun at times, but also result in a nice sunrise as I write this, and may aid in a nice sunset as well. But it’s a rain-free day with above to well above normal temperatures – maybe even approaching a few record highs at some of the climate sites, so that will be something to keep track of. Additionally, the antecedent and current dry conditions along with today’s warmth and more wind will increase the fire danger across the region, which will remain elevated through the week. What won’t remain elevated most of the week are our high temperatures. They will stay up there tomorrow and Wednesday, but a strong cold front will pass through in the early hours of Thursday morning, and while it will bring clouds and the threat of a quick-passing rain shower, it will certainly knock the region off its temperature pedestal to seasonable to below normal by the end of the week., so get ready to reach for the jackets and warmer clothes again soon…

TODAY: Sunny. Highs 71-78. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

TONIGHT: Clear. Lows 46-53. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Sunny. Highs 68-75, coolest eastern coastal areas. Wind variable to E up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 45-52. Wind S under 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Sunny. Highs 67-74, coolest southern coastal areas. Wind S 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear evening. Clouds arrive overnight with a passing rain shower possible, favoring areas north of I-90. Lows 52-59. Wind S to SW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

THURSDAY: Sun and passing clouds. Highs 58-65. Wind NW 10-20 MPH, gusty.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 32-39. Wind NW 5-15 MPH with higher gusts in the evening.

FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 52-59. Wind NW 5-15 MPH shifting to SW and diminishing.

DAYS 6-10 (OCTOBER 26-30)

Dry pattern. Current indications are for a cold front to pass by with a brief rain shower threat early in the weekend (morning of October 26) otherwise dry weather with breezy conditions and near to below normal temperatures through October 27, then a shift of high pressure to the south of the region with a milder trend following this with continued fair weather.

DAYS 11-15 (OCTOBER 31 – NOVEMBER 4)

Dry, milder weather may hold to Halloween before we encounter an early November cool down, but only a brief wet weather threat as the dry pattern continues. Maybe a better shot at rain toward the very end of the period.

  1. Thanks, TK.

July/August 2022 did not quite break a record for the least amount of rain over the 2 month period. But it was a bone-dry period.

Sept/Oct 2024 may not break a record for the least amount of precipitation over a 2-month stretch but it’s got to be close.

  2. People tend to forget just how special Brady was. He excelled as a QB in his 40s. That’s never happened before. Nor is it likely to happen again. Even during his final year with Tampa Bay he did not look overmatched or over the hill.

Aaron Rodgers, on the other hand, looks the part of a QB who is washed up. I guess he doesn’t eat enough avocado. I don’t know.

Devante Adams won’t help his cause. About the only thing Rodgers can do is throw screens to the running back Hall and watch number 20 run like a gazelle down the field (Hall is quite good).

The Patriots can take solace in the fact that the Jets may be even more doomed. The Jets don’t have a QB, nor really any strategic plan in place to improve the team. Applying band-aids is not a strategy.

I wish we had a relegation system for teams like the Patriots, Panthers, and Jets. A year in the Canadian Football League – or even the threat of having to go there if they finish last or second to last in the standings – would be a healthy incentive for a league (NFL) that kind of promotes failure/tanking.

  3. JP Dave, I 100% agree with you on the front office mismanagement of the Red Sox and Patriots. Frankly, Kraft and Henry should sell if they’re no longer genuinely interested in winning. Their actions in recent years suggest not, including not spending even close to the cap (football) and talking incessantly about staying under the luxury tax threshold (baseball).

No doubt, we’ve been spoiled since 2002. However, not fielding competitive teams for the last 5 plus years is a problem. I will always be a fan, but I’m kind of checked out on both teams. I see no future with either club.

Despite the rocky start for the Bruins, it’s a totally different story. They’re competitive every year. That is ALL I want. I do not need Stanley Cups (nice to have, of course, but not necessary to enjoy watching a team). And the Celtics are competitive every year, too. Both teams’ front offices know what they’re doing and aim to achieve perennial competitiveness.

    1. Agree 100%. I have totally and completely checked out on the RedSox, even refusing free tickets to games. Regarding the Patriots, I still have some interest, but it is WANING fast. 🙂

  4. I saw a great cimment this am by a Mets fan.

Whittier: “Of all sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these, ‘It might have been.’”

One great thing about sports is that you can quickly move on from “it might have been” to “next year, it could be.”

We had decades with Brady. And it was Brady. And we have seen other championships recently. Truth is….our teams just cannot always win. So we regroup and in the words of a man I admired tremendously….its at their lowest point that a team, or an individual, needs its fans the most.

  5. 82.2F here.

On my 6 mile run around midday it felt like early June. Not mid summer because of two things: 1. Not much humidity at all; 2. Sun angle.

Still, I sweat bullets as they say.

And the sparrows and other birds are very active. I realize that they `know’ it’s not time to mate. But they’re chirping away as if it’s April or May. Some of them seem to be tweeting (I’m using the original use of the verb) “climate change,” “climate change.” Others are countering “you didn’t say that a week ago when we nearly had a frost.” It’s always interesting to hear birds chatter.

  6. Just 80 here.

Joshua, Curious to know what your equipment is and specifically what is the accuracy of the thermometer sensor.

    Many thanks

Full disclosure, my sensor is accurate to +/- 0.5 F

  7. SAK, I am aware that the sun angle now is like late February and not June. I didn’t express myself well. It FELT like a run in early June. While it can be quite humid in early June it tends not to be and despite the summer sun angle there are some upper 70s/low 80s days due to being in the city, whether strictly speaking a sea breeze or simply living next to two bodies of water: the harbor and the Charles. On my run I’m almost always within a few feet of water.

I mentioned the sun angle because had this been a day in, say, early August with a very different sun angle it would have been quite hot.

  8. JP Dave, my thermometer is probably crap. It’s a ThermoPro product that I think is overly sensitive to the sun. So perhaps my 82.2F is too high. Right now it is not in full sun and it’s down to 81.6F. Still too high, perhaps? I don’t know.

  9. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gejy7geIWiw I agree with everything BB said.
Things that have suffered since BB has left.
    1. Run Defense
    2. Pass Defense
    3. Special teams
    4. Run offense
    5. Passing game is better this year due to Maye.
    Patriots culture stinks.
Many of the issues with this team are due to coaching.
This team would have more wins with BB at the helm and krafts saying the hell out of football operations.

  10. Thanks TK.

Would guess the apparent over-performance on temperatures there today is largely a product of the dry ground and models failing to mix out the RH’s enough.

Fire weather concerns becoming more and more abundant across the entire Eastern US, from New England all the way down to the areas affected by Helene, which have seen nothing since and now have a lot of dead/downed tree debris that is drying out fast. And still no real indications of relief…

    1. Our wind will be coming up for midweek. Any fires are going to be a bit of trouble.

When the second cold front goes by this coming weekend, it really chills off. We have a big parade in Woburn on Sunday, which looks dry, but breezy and chilly!

        1. It can be an issue if there is wind, but right now I think the wind may be OK. I’d contact the FD about it and see if they’d do a precautionary wet down of surrounding area.
