Friday October 25 2024 Forecast (7:48AM)

DAYS 1-5 (OCTOBER 25-29)

High pressure brings fair and cooler weather to the region during today. Another cold front slides across the region Saturday morning with some clouds although the rain shower chance seems pretty absent at this point. This front will introduce even cooler air to the region for the weekend, along with a gusty breeze at times, but continued dry weather. Chilly high pressure builds in Monday with more of the same, then the high slides off to the east Tuesday at which time a temperature moderation gets underway.

TODAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 56-63. Wind NW 5-15 MPH shifting to SW and diminishing.

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 42-49. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY: Variably cloudy with a slight chance of a quick-passing rain shower in the morning. Sun and passing clouds afternoon. Highs 53-60. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy early, then clear. Lows 32-39. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

SUNDAY: Sun and passing clouds. Highs 52-59. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 28-35. Wind calm.

MONDAY: Sunny. Highs 52-59. Wind W up to 10 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 35-42. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY: Sunny. Highs 60-67. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (OCTOBER 30 – NOVEMBER 3)

High pressure shifts to the south and east with fair weather and a warming trend into the middle of next week. Timing of next frontal boundary looks around November 1 with a rain shower chance, then a cool-down going into the first weekend of November.

DAYS 11-15 (NOVEMBER 4-8)

Continuing to lean dry for the pattern, but still eyeing potential wetter weather to our south should the pattern shift enough to bring it north.

        1. Quick question: is there any danger of starting a fire outside from a spark etc from our indoor fire place. I want to be careful but we love fires inside and the temps are getting chilly. Thanks.

          1. I’m not an authority but I have outdoor fires regularly and will continue to have one in my small Mesa solo stove but not in our fire pit.

              1. I take it then you both feel having a fire inside in fire place is safe. We just bought some wood and are looking forward to having toasty fires.

  1. Thank you, TK

Up to 50 from a low of 35. I chatted with a friend in Charleston SC and it was a cool 58 there

  2. When was the last time that we had strong EL-Nino followed by a weak La-Nina (that peaked in towards winter, not fall)?

      1. thanks, I know of the site but I find it difficult that we havent really seen a strong EL-Nino to a weak La-Nina.
There been time where we have had very strong EL-Nino go to weak La-Nina but thats only happened in 2017, 1984 as far as I can tell and both of those the weak La-Nina peaked early season and went neutral towards the end.
Then looking at Strong El-Ninos it looks like it tends to either stay neutral, or go moderate/strong La-Nina.

  3. Whereas 75F-80F in the recent warm spell occurred with dps in the 30s and 40s, some suggestion in the models that Wednesday and Thursday’s warm days could have dps in the 50s to maybe near 60F.

So, possibility that the next warm surge may feel warmer than last week’s which felt pretty nice, as it was.

  4. Question

A person in sutton said he saw a bright object in the sky last night. I thought maybe orionid meteor but he said this.

…this was really low in the sky and moving extreemly fast horizontally, but not falling with gravity.

Any thoughts on what it might have been

      1. Most likely a comet. I think there is one that is supposed to be visible in the western sky from the middle to the end of October. I’ll try to Google after I finish up on other things.

  5. I received this from a woman Mac and I worked with for a few decades. Her dad…George McCormack ….worked with us for over 40 years and was a dear friend. His daughter mentioned that her dad had purchased their home from General John Kelly.

There are political undertones but I do not intend this to be political….but just a story about someone I adored. Those who were at Mac’s celebration of life May remember him as the man who sang a song for Mac

I think of this also as a story of the oak square section of Brighton

I did ask TK for permission to share. ❤️

  6. Vicki, I did find this.

    Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS)

This comet will be visible in the western sky after sunset from October 14–31, 2024. It might be visible to the naked eye if its tail is well-lit by sunlight. Binoculars or a small telescope are recommended for the best viewing experience

    1. That’s the one we have been watching. Thank you. Pics I’ve seen all show it descending and I thought it was now very faint. But perhaps the sky last night was such that it would be very bright again?

  7. I’ll post this again next week, but it’s an update of a post from last year, regarding Halloween. 🙂

October 31 weather highlights for Boston…

These stats are not specifically for trick or treating hours but you can get an idea of what those may have been like…

The wettest stretch came from 1989 through 1994 when 5 out of six Halloweens had measurable rainfall, including a soaking 1.54 in 1991, a lot of it falling during that evening.

From 1955 through 1962, 5 out of 8 of those years had measurable rainfall on October 31.

The driest long-term stretch has been in this century. We had a couple of minor measurable rainfall events in 2000 and 2001, also a few hundredths in 2009, 2012, 2013, and 2019. 2021 was a little wetter with 0.42 and all of the rest of the 21st century Halloweens have recorded dry conditions. Although very much in competition, there were 11 years in a row with no precipitation at all in Boston from 1977 through 1988.

    The two warmest Halloween readings…
    1946: 81 high
    1896: 76 high

    The two coldest Halloween readings…
    1904: 27 low
    2020: 28 low

    The most notable warm stretch…
1945 through 1957 when the high temperatures were 61° to 81° with the exception of highs in the 50s in 1947, 1953, and 1954.

    Another notable warm stretch…
2003 through 2009 when high temperatures ranged from 63° to 73°.

It’s interesting to note that the 2 stretches of majority warm years were during POSITIVE phases of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO).

    Other notables….
Seasonably cool every year from 2010 through 2018 with high temperatures 52° to 58° except 2013 when it was 63°. This was also a very dry stretch with all zeroes for rainfall except 0.02 in 2012 and 0.03 in 2013.

Before there were really any nighttime celebrations there was a chilly stretch starting with that 27° low temperature in 1904 that lasted through 1908 when the high temperature at Boston was below 50° on all but one of those years.

The coldest Halloween high temperature: 42° just 4 years ago in 2020. Brrr! Temperatures were in the middle 30s during that evening. Of course that particular Halloween was very muted due to COVID.

Boston’s high temps for the last 5 Halloweens…
    2019: 72
    2020: 42
    2021: 67
    2022: 68
    2023: 50

    1. Thanks, TK. Eric reminded me of 2020. Many kids, including my grandkids, didn’t go out that year. We had a haunted house in the garage which turned out to be so much fun the kids wanted to do it again in 2021.

  8. Eric

If you’re thinking to yourself you cannot recall a sunnier and drier fall than this one, you are absolutely right. Not many 110 year olds walking around. Boston moves to 3rd driest fall tomorrow, 2nd by Wednesday.

  9. Unusual Opportunity (Posted with Permission from TK)

My company does a lot of industry studies and we are doing one now on weather monitoring equipment (Davis, WeatherFlow Tempest, AcuRite, RainWise, Vivosun, Logia, KestrelMet, BloomSky, etc) among enthusiasts.

We are fielding a telephone (or Teams) survey of about 20 minutes. If you have ever purchased / owned any of these brands, your feedback would be helpful. The questions are not technical. They are very high level and more about the purchase process you went through.

We can send you an Amazon Certificate for $300 for a completed survey and the survey can remain COMPLETELY ANONYMOUS if you wish. Nothing will be made public and your name will not appear anywhere.

The interview will be completed by yours truly at a time convenient for you. We would like to wrap up by Wednesday. You may contact me at my business email or business cell phone. davidp@mapstoneresearch.com. (617) 322-0659. Feel free to contact me with any questions you might have.

    It is just that simple!

    Thank You,
    Longshot

    1. I have two accu rite. One smaller unit and one larger unit. i finally gave up on the larger one because the outside units didn’t speak to the inside unit very well. I attribute some of that to our Wi-Fi but even when I moved the unit closer to Wi-Fi, I had trouble. I love my smaller unit. I also have two kestrel units.

If any of that is what you are looking for, I’m happy to help. I don’t need to be paid if there is a limit to the number of folks to be paid

      1. These are the serial numbers and model numbers if that helps

        – [ ] Acurite 06047-rx
        – [ ] AcuRite 01036-rx
        – [ ] Kestrel 5000
        – [ ] Kestrel 3000
The 5000 links to my devices to record data The 3000 does not. I love both of them and have both set up on the kestrel tripod to record wind speed too

  10. Beautiful evening to photograph a football game here at Woburn High, on Senior Night. We are hosting Belmont.

One more game on the road next Friday before playoffs (we’ll have at least 1 playoff game) and then the traditional Thanksgiving game which will be in Winchester this year. 🙂

      1. Our annual Host Lions Club Halloween Parade. This event is the biggest fundraiser for the Lions of the year. It was started 50 years ago by the father of my future cousin. I’ve had an uncle, a cousin, a classmate, and a neighbor as president of the Lions, and this year another neighbor of mine begins as president.

Parade steps off from the Showcase Cinema at 38/128 (95) at 1:00 p.m. Sunday and travels just over 2 miles south down Route 38 (Main St.) in, taking a turn toward Horn Pond where it breaks up just before the Winchester line.

              1. Woburn played “we’re not going to score anymore” in the 4th quarter … Put in the sophomores for experience who played great defense. 34-0 final.
