Sunday October 27 2024 Forecast (7:29AM)

DAYS 1-5 (OCTOBER 27-31)

One cold front moved through the region yesterday. A band of clouds exited the region to start the day, otherwise we saw a sun with passing clouds and a gusty wind, though it was still mild with high temperatures over 60. Today, cooler air has settled in with high temperatures failing to exceed 60. Wind will be a little lighter than yesterday and high pressure will provide another day of fair weather. Another cold front will move quickly through the region tonight with a few clouds, but no precipitation due to a continued lack of moisture. This will lead to an even cooler day Monday, though the gusty breeze that greets you in the morning will drop off later. High pressure moves right over the region Monday night – the perfect radiational cooling set up to send much of the region below freezing for Tuesday morning low temperatures, except some immediate shore locations and urban centers. Tuesday itself will be another nice day, and after the cold start we’ll see a decent temperature recovery during the day. High clouds will be noticed streaming in from the west and northwest as the day goes on. These clouds will thicken up Tuesday night into early Wednesday along with a brief chance of rain. This will be a warm front passing by and will lead to fair weather and above normal temperatures for the middle of the week, and the final two days of October. A cold front will be approaching by Thursday, but the early idea is that any rain shower threat from this system will hold off until after Halloween evening activities.

TODAY: Sun and passing clouds. Highs 52-59. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts, shifting to W.

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 30-37. Wind W 5-15 MPH, higher gusts, shifting to NW.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 50-57. Wind NW 10-20 MPH, shifting to N and diminishing.

MONDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 25-32 except 32-39 urban centers and immediate shoreline. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Sunshine, filtered by increasing high clouds in the afternoon. Highs 55-62. Wind variable to SE up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. A period or two of light rain is possible, favoring areas north of I-90. Lows 45-52. Wind SE to S 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Sun/cloud mix. Highs 65-72. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Lows 50-57. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

THURSDAY: Partly sunny. Highs 70-77. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (NOVEMBER 1-5)

Cold front passes with a rain shower chance early November 1, then a return to dry, cooler weather lasting through the November 2-3 weekend. Unsettled weather chance with some possible rain November 4-5 as a frontal boundary and low pressure waves temporarily overtake the area.

DAYS 11-15 (NOVEMBER 6-10)

Overall pattern goes back to dry. No major temperature extremes indicated.

  1. Today is our annual Lions Club Halloween Parade. This started as a nighttime event 50 years ago on Halloween itself, but after a couple years quickly expanded so that it was better to move it to daytime (last Sunday of October).

The long-time and current route for this parade starts it in the large parking area that is adjacent to the Showcase Cinema by I-95, entering Route 38 (Main Street) and marching south through Woburn to just about the Winchester line, where it turns onto Lake Avenue and breaks up as it approaches Horn Pond. There is a large road adjacent to the pond that is closed for the afternoon and this is the area where it is all “undone” and shuttle busses take the participants “the back way” to the starting point again so they can gather up and be on their way.

This parade often consists of around 20 bands and as many as 40 floats, including one from every Woburn school and most of the organizations. Some bands come from as far away as southern MA or central NH to be in this parade.

There have been times when we have had bands from UMass Amherst, UMass Lowell, UNH, BC, BU, and Harvard march in this parade, sometimes many of them in the same year.

The well known Boston Crusaders are a regular participant, along with other area bands that are well known and make regular appearances in parades such as Quincy’s Flag Day and Plymouth’s Thanksgiving parades.

There remains a small version of what used to be a much larger American Legion band from Waltham, formerly headed by the great Dot Hill, who made news with her band when they visited Moscow in 1990, becoming the first American band to ever play in Red Square.

Though Dottie left us in 2004, her memory remains with our city and while the band is not nearly as large as it once was, it’s nice to see the strong effort to keep it going.

Anyway, I’ll be taking hundreds of photos of the parade today. 🙂

    1. I just learned about this event this week and wished I had known earlier. I now know people who are going from here. For some reason, I prefer these suburban/smaller town events over those downtown Boston or NYC.

      1. The parade will be shown on Woburn Public Media Center both live & on demand. Not the same as being there but you can get an idea of the what it’s like to be there.

My neighbor and his son have been doing the broadcasts for the last several years. Once upon a time my cousin did a handful of them, and my uncle announced one in 1990. All 3 of them were president of the Lions at one point.

            1. Looks a little more likely in these models, but so far away.

Meant to ask if you saw my post this past Friday at 4:38 PM? Could use the help if interested. If not , no need to say a thing.

                1. just looked. sorry missed that.
Sure, I’ll do it I have Davis Instruments Vantage Vue.
                  busyvtoday, will email you tomorrow.
                  thanks.

  2. Good afternoon. Thank you TK

My kids, their significant others, my DILs cousin (whom I adore) and all grandkids were here. We have the start of a gnome garden for Mac. We chose a garden for him when we moved here but have not been able to maintain the flowers. The bunnies eat them. It’s a beautiful day!!

  3. Thoughts on the Patriots.
    1. Discipline is killing this team. Though the Jets and patriots have the same record, this should not have been this close.
    2. Drake Maye is the future
    2. Hunter Henry is a key part and needs to be kept on the Patriots.
    3. Douglas needs to get more involved
    4. Coaching needs to be looked at, it needs to be way better.
    5. . The first pick they get needs to be an OT
    6. . Second pick has to be a pass rusher.
    7. They need to get an x wide receiver that is consistent be it in the draft or free agency. They have plenty of money to play with.
    8. Special teams needs to be better.
Patriots defense and special teams have flaws in them and it comes very much down to coaching and scheme.

  4. Thanks, TK!

The Red Sox won the 2004 World Series 20 years ago tonight when they swept the Cards under a total lunar eclipse of a blood moon.

    (From skyandtelescope.org):

Fate smiled on Boston on Wednesday, October 27, 2004, (October 28th Universal Time). The low clouds that had covered the area all day began to break up at sunset, giving wonderful though slightly intermittent views of the last total lunar eclipse until 2007. And moments before the end of totality, the Boston Red Sox won baseball’s World Series for the first time since 1918.

In the words of Joe Castig:

    “Can you believe it?!?”

  5. Quick look at guidance updates etc…

GFS is a poor model. They just can’t seem to get that one correct. Needs a lot of ironing still, but it’s really .. bad .. beyond a few days. ECMWF is more reliable at this point in time.

Cold tonight. Chilly Monday. Cool Tuesday.
Warm front brings a brief shot of rain Tuesday night (northern New England may even have some embedded thunder, briefly).
Warmer days Wednesday & Thursday, but records will not fall on Thursday. 1946 will remain the king of warm Halloweens.

Another cool-down takes place at the end of the week as we welcome November.

  6. I am speechless tonight, as you or may not know I am huge Commnaders fan. That ending was special and Daniel’s is special.

Pats will be fine, Maye is a solid QB. Probably a stud, but he needs help. His skill players are average to well below average at best and his OL is probably the worst. Coaching is poor especially from a play calling perspective, Kraft probably is regretting a lot of the hiring decisions. I thought the Defense would be better, that can be addressed in free agency.

    perspective on the offensive side.
