Sunday December 8 2024 Forecast (7:59AM)

DAYS 1-5 (DECEMBER 8-12)

Not much change to the expectations for this Sunday blog update, so after I tell you that the light snowfall from the clipper low passing to our north has basically ended, we basically summarize what I wrote here yesterday. Expect some clearing during the day today, and a milder day overall, melting most of the light snowfall that occurred. An unsettled stretch is ours through Wednesday. A warm front approaches and enters the region later Monday but low pressure forming on it and high pressure in eastern Canada results in colder air being stubborn to dislodge at the surface. While the airmass is essentially mild enough for rain, we’ll have to watch for brief wet snow in higher elevations well northwest of Boston at the onset of precipitation late Monday, and maybe a brief period of time where freezing rain can occur just after that in these locations – which are generally the Monadnock Region of southwestern NH to the hills of northern Worcester Country in MA. I do expect a weak surface low to hang around just to our east Tuesday, keeping us socked in with low clouds and patchy drizzle. If breaks in the clouds occur, they favor areas further west. Finally, a stronger cold frontal boundary pushes slowly eastward across the region Wednesday to the early hours of Thursday, with a couple low pressure waves riding along it, passing just to our west. This is a milder, rain showery set-up. I can’t even rule out a couple embedded thunderstorms before the front pushes through. I’ve been watching for the possibility of a switch to a mix or snow as the front goes through, but at the moment I’m leaning toward the moisture exiting ahead of the air cold enough to create a change in precipitation-type, so I’m just going with a dry, windy, colder Thursday.

TODAY: Cloudy with any lingering light snow exiting by mid morning, then increasing sun but still a few passing clouds from late morning on. Highs 40-47. Wind variable to W up to 10 MPH.

TONIGHT: Increasing clouds. Lows 27-34. Wind N up to 10 MPH.

MONDAY: Thickening overcast. Rain arrives during the afternoon but may be mixed with snow/sleet/ice over some interior locations north of I-90. Highs 33-40 southwestern NH and north central MA, 40-47 elsewhere, mildest along the South Coast. Wind N to NE under 10 MPH interior valleys, E to SE 5-15 MPH elsewhere.

MONDAY NIGHT: Overcast. Areas of fog. Rain likely. Temperatures generally steady. Wind N to E up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Overcast. Areas of fog / drizzle. Highs 35-42 interior valleys, 42-49 elsewhere. Wind NE to SE up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Overcast. Areas of fog / drizzle. Temperatures steady or slowly rising. Wind SE up to 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Cloudy. Widespread rain showers. Highs 50-57. Wind S 10-20 MPH, higher gusts along the coast and in elevated locations.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Cloudy evening with widespread rain showers and a chance of a thunderstorm. Rain showers ending with clouds breaking overnight. Lows 32-39. Wind S 10-20 MPH, shifting to W, higher gusts.

THURSDAY: Sun/cloud mix. Temperatures steady in the 30s. Wind W 10-20 MPH, higher gusts.

DAYS 6-10 (DECEMBER 13-17)

Generally fair and seasonably chilly weather expected December 13-14. Minor systems can bring minor snow/mix threats December 15 and again at the end of the period.

DAYS 11-15 (DECEMBER 18-22)

Overall pattern features 2 opportunities for snow/mix, but neither look like “big” storms at this point. Fine-tuning to come. Temperatures variable, averaging near normal.

  1. A reminder that yesterday’s (and today’s) 6-10 & 8-14 day outlooks are (and will be) auto generated and are therefore useless. I am not really sure why they still do this.

  2. Thanks, TK.

Both the forecasts and comments highlighting local conditions have been especially helpful for planning during the past few days. Thanks, all.

  3. Good morning and thank you TK. Hadi stated it best,
a sugar coating here in JP. Perhaps 1/4 to 1/2 inch at a stretch.
Starting snowing about 11:45 PM last night and by 1AM
as much snow had fallen as did the rest of the night. 🙂

We watched a rather new movie last night, Conclave
It was excellent, although a little slow in places. It was a “Dialogue” movie for sure. Full disclosure: The Catholic Church did NOT like this movie, so if you are a devout Catholic, it “may” offend you. I don’t know.

I don’t know if conclave’s are actually conducted like this, but I can imagine they are. Full of political back stabbing, portrayed skillfully by the lead actor, Ralph Fiennes with a superb supporting cast of Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow and isabella rossellini. In my humble opinion well worth watching.

OH, and watch out for a shocker of an ending. I didn’t see it coming, but my wife called it. She has an uncanny knack fo that.

    1. Conclave was great!! Watched it with my parents. I am part of a catholic family, Yes alot of it is true.

  4. Thanks Tk . Sugar coating in pembroke & as I left for work after 5:30 this morning the salters were out , minor event as advertised & all & all it’s looking pretty quiet moving forward .

  5. I just finished watching a 30 minute nature program called “Earth Odyssey” with Dylan Dreyer on Cozi TV. I was just flipping channels and happened to come across it. It comes on Sunday mornings at 10:30 am. I very well may make it a habit to watch. 🙂

For those who may have forgotten, Dylan was a tv met on Channel 7. I haven’t thought of her in years. I guess she decided to get out of the broadcast business. Between these media outlets, social media etc. can’t say that I blame her. Dylan appears every now and then during the show describing the various animal behaviors and she looked to be “quite pregnant”. I don’t know if it’s a very old rerun or recent.

Anyway, just thought I would pass this info along. 🙂

  6. Boston (Logan) received its first measurable snowfall at 0.3”. 🙂

And as of today, it’s now 1,017 days and counting…oh well.

  7. Horn Pond, Woburn: The most extensive ice coverage this early since 2018.

Woburn Common: The ice sculptures that were carved on November 30 are essentially unscathed on day 9 of their existence.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen that happen.

    1. What disgusts me of Boston’s First Night sculptures is that they are smashed the very next day, regardless of the temperature. A number of years ago, I went downtown the very next day and witnessed this. It sickened me to say the least. If it was because of warm temperatures then maybe I could understand but that particular year the temperature was more than cold enough and for several days to come, in fact. Just knowing this is done every year the very next day, I haven’t been back to a First Night event since.

Sorry for my rant TK. Glad that you and others are still able to “enjoy” looking at your town’s ice sculptures after these number of days. 🙂

  8. Thanks TK.

Another 8” of snow at Killington over the past 24 hours bringing them up to 26” on the week and already 61” on this young season . I was up there again yesterday with my son and the scene on the upper mountain was magical with all the thick snow and rime icing. I captured this shot from the summit later in the afternoon after the skies cleared briefly showing the undercast below…

And these were a couple shots I took hiking up to the Catwalk trail off the summit…

It’s deep deep winter up there.

    1. Absolutely breathtaking. When I skied, I’d stand for long periods of time just looking out over the beauty. Wow.

  9. Concert of the choir my son is the president of went great! And he overcame having been sick for about a week, was finally fever free, and able to quell a cough long enough to perform the full show without any problems! Atop that he had to oversee and take part in transportation of equipment from the school they practice at to the church they perform at, set-up, break-down, and doing the majority of the work for the livestream, which I monitor and adjust during the show. But we pulled it off!

    Weather thoughts…

    Mon-Wed: Unsettled, as described.
Thu-Fri: Cold, windy. Potential snow showers Friday that I don’t have in the forecast above, but am adding in.
Weekend: Fair, seasonably chilly but more tranquil.
Next week: Benign pattern overall to start with, a bit milder at first. Late week a colder trend with snow shower potentials, and may have to watch for a clipper not seen by guidance yet.
Christmas week: Potential snowy pattern evolving, at least on the cold side. I’m curious what CPC decides to go with here.

MJO is interesting as it may be migrating toward phases 6 & 7 as we get beyond December 15. While 6 is not always an ideal phase for cold/snow, it can be early in the season. Phase 7 is good news for the winter weather lover. The caveat is that the ensemble shows MJO fairly weak, so the influence may be limited rather than clear-cut.

  10. I drove by a couple of bodies of water out this way in my way home from adding red ribbons to Mac’s tree on the common. No freeze here …..not even in the hallows of the shoreline
