Wednesday December 25 2024 Forecast (7:07AM)

DAYS 1-5 (DECEMBER 25-29)

High pressure dominates and brings quiet late December weather from today into the weekend. This Christmas Day goes down as a white Christmas for a good part of the WHW forecast area which has at least 1 inch of snowcover, but the holiday itself presents great conditions for local and regional travel. Just watch for icy areas on the ground from the last couple events where there has not been a sufficient melt / dry cycle. Otherwise, not much to talk about with the high pressure area dominating. By Sunday though, we’ll see more cloudiness as the high starts to drift away and a large scale trough approaches from the west.

TODAY (CHRISTMAS DAY): Partly sunny. Highs 28-35. Wind N 5-15 MPH.

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 20-27. Wind N up to 10 MPH.

THURSDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 33-40. Wind N up to 10 MPH.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 18-25. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 35-42. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 17-24. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

SATURDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 38-45. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Lows 30-37. Wind SE 5-15 MPH.

SUNDAY: Mostly cloudy. Highs 40-47. Wind S 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (DECEMBER 30 – JANUARY 3)

Low pressure coinciding with milder air aloft brings a rain chance late December 30 (may have to watch for inland icing for part of the event). Another precipitation threat comes January 1 and/or 2.

DAYS 11-15 (JANUARY 4-8)

Colder trend. Mid to late period potential storm threat.

  1. Merry Xmas everyone, we sneaked in a white Xmas here in Maine bc of yesterdays snow. Otherwise it would not have been.

  2. Good morning and thank you TK.

    Happy Holiday all.

Beginning to look interesting down the road. Time will tell.

    1. Too bad it doesn’t count as a “White” Christmas due to that stupid 7:00 am rule. Still it’s been too long since. We should be having snow around this time much more often than a measly 25% imo.

  3. Interesting.

The first day of Hanukkah and Christmas have only coincided a handful of times since 1900, according to the Jewish Federations of North America. The holidays started on the same day in 1910, 1921, 1959 and 2005.

Further reading said they coincide an average five times a century.

  4. From Eric Webb
I think this gives us snow lovers a chance but I will let TK chime in on this tweet.

Pepperidge farm remembers when the “record” cold PDO was supposed to give us a -PNA/SE ridge pattern all winter long this year.

Instead, the exact opposite has happened/is continuing to happen & the PDO is rapidly rising.

A lot of people finding out the hard way that the PDO has no value in winter forecasting & it doesn’t “force” the extratropical wave pattern, even in an extreme state.

The PDO is at the mercy of the tropics & the atmosphere

  5. TK – Can you explain the 7:00 AM time regarding a White Christmas? I don’t understand why that specific time makes it “official”. It doesn’t make even remote sense to me.

    1. Someone made up the rule and the NWS is sticking to it. At least that is the way I am looking at it.

I don’t mind the 1 inch, but perhaps the time could have been
      say, Noon.

      1. Noon is pretty good since many of these are “surprise” snow events that by coincidence get going during the mid-morning hours into early afternoon. Iirc the 1974 event was just that.

If I was in charge of the NWS, if there is 1 inch on the ground before Christmas Day ends, it would be an official White Christmas, even if it melts by end of day.

    2. Snow depth observations are taken (when there is snow on the ground) at all locations across the country (and the world) at 12z, which is 7am EST.

      1. And they aren’t taken at any other time? Weird, if you ask me.
But then the NWS is a branch of government, so there ya go. 🙂

        1. Actually, it’s a standard set by the World Meteorological Organization to be used worldwide. Synoptic observations are taken at 00z, 6z, 12z, and 18z.

              1. I agree. But I suppose they have to have some standards. Whether they are logical…..or not. I agree re 18. If I look out the window at any point on Christmas Day and see snow, it’s a white Christmas to me

  6. Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah. Thank you for these wonderful daily forecasts and discussions. Hoping 2025 presents some interesting storminess early in the year!

  7. Boston officially has 3.0” on the ground. More than enough for an “official” White Christmas on the books. ❄️
