Short-Lived Humidity Breaks Tuesday

4:51PM

This one doesn’t last long, folks, and it never really gets that hot either. We’ve felt the humidity come back and temperatures have climbed into the 80s in many areas today, and this will again be the story for tomorrow, but the humidity will make a quick exit tomorrow afternoon and evening after a cold front passes. The thunderstorm threat this go-around is minimal for eastern MA, southeastern NH, and RI, because of the timing of advancing storms today/tonight (they fade with the setting sun and it’s also not that unstable in this area), and tomorrow the front coming through shortly after noon versus late day or evening will not allow very much time for widespread big storms to form. Though there is still the threat of a few strong storms ahead of and along the front, so it is unwise to let our guard down at this point.

The front coming through Tuesday sets the area up for a windy/warm/dry day Wednesday. This nice weather will be short lived, however, as a low pressure trough and a series of disturbances returns unsettled weather to the region during Thursday, lingering through the end of the week.

Forecast for eastern MA, southern NH, and RI…

TUESDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Mild, drier. Lows 60-65. Wind NW 10-15 MPH.

  1. Thanks TK for the update. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the front tomorrow comes through dry or at least with minimal showers. I have to be outdoors for the morning into very early afternoon. Of course I don’t like thunderstorms regardless of where I am.

  2. I am kind of hoping for another storm because the last one we had was kind of exciting. 🙂 I hope that I am with you during one of the next big storms, TK . 🙂

  3. Todd is going for widespread severe storms for eastern MA all afternoon long…I really hope he is dead wrong on that. Harvey and Pete are just thinking very quick, if at all in most locations.

  4. TK, need to more about those Fri showers if possible. Are we talking about am, afternoon or PM? I am asking because I have put together a dinner for 20 at a restaurant in Cambridge and before dinner there is a “patio cocktail hour.”

    1. As you know, 4 days out it is difficult to time something coming along in what will initially be a fast-flowing jet. Using the often-reliable Euro, and taking it as is from the 12z run, you’ll have to get “lucky” to fit in that patio cocktail hour. As you know, even on a day dominated by low pressure both surface and aloft, if you are lucky enough, you can squeeze out a couple hours of rain-free time, and even some partial sun. I want to see how the NAM handles the details when we get to Wednesday, but if you have to have some idea now, lean toward wet.

  5. Todd is in the same mode from last Wednesday. However, he may not be too far off. The potential for explosive development is there, depending on the position of the front. But unlike last week, this front will move, whereas the other one sluggishly sagged southward and sat for a while… (Say that 5 times fast.)

    1. One martini down and I could say it. Of course my husband is a bit concerned since I said it out loud and out of the blue

      Thanks TK

  6. The NWS 7:39 pm forecast is only a 20% chance of storms for tomorrow. It certainly works for me, but sounds too good to be true.

TK, any remote chance that forecast could verify?? 🙂

    1. Currently the radar shows most of VT and northern NH lit up like a Christmas tree. If those storms are moving south, then it could be a noisy night/ early morning.

      1. Those storms, as they are, will probably not come close to surviving the trip southeastward. That zone does represent where the new storms will fire tomorrow.

    2. Sure it could. There is about a 50 mile wide red zone where a broken line of storms can fire off very rapidly between noon and 1PM, very much like last Wednesday. My feeling is that this time it may be a bit further south and east than it was last time. But all it will take for the storms to develop in the same areas as last week is for the front to be moving a few MPH slower than progged.

  7. Lots of storms here in wrentham, thunder an lightning with a 30-45 min worth of rain, received about .29 🙂

  8. .47 here from those storms in North Attleboro. Pretty healthy storms for the early morning.

  9. Well that was fun! Lost power in Brighton arounf 6am, but the good news… it’s back on! Not storm related since we escaped the storms this morning, only rain. What’s the scoop on this afternoon’s storms?

    1. Partway through the storms I was hoping we’d lose power – in addition to loving it when we do, I figured it’d be a good excuse to turn over and go to sleep since with my phone and internet not working I’d be out of work 🙂

  10. Glad your power is back on. You missed a pretty good light show with the storms that we got.

  11. If we hadn’t been up at 2:30 with the dog who wasn’t feeling well, I would have enjoyed the storms a whole lot more. What a light show and it was a long while in coming. The thunder was that great, rolling thunder too. Not as much rain as I’d have liked but a steady, moderate .12 inch and we will take what we get!

Now to try and function on my early morning phone conference and pretend I actually got some sleep.

    1. Hi, Vicki – hope your dog is feeling better. I also enjoyed the thunder and lightning but would have liked to see more rain. I don’t want any severe weather, but any rain would be good.

      1. Thank you, rainshine. He seems fine. He was just doing a funny choking thing. My husband finally announced he was dreaming he was a cat and trying to cough up a fur ball. Of course he was basically raised by the cat we had for most of his life and I think actually believes he is part cat so maybe that’s what it was.

        How are you today?

        1. Glad your dog is better. Your cat raised your dog? That is typical – and so cute! Cats think they own the world (I think they do) and they think they own everyone, too. I am doing ok, thanks. We still aren’t ready for a new cat just yet. When we are, some people I know who run a shelter have told us whenever we are ready to come in and take a look.

Hope your daughter and her family are feeling better. I think you said you are planning for a party this coming wknd. Hope the weather cooperates, ‘though they day it might not. Maybe we can get rid of the rain by Sat.

          1. You will know when you are ready and I suspect when you are ready will be the time the perfect cat will be looking for you also 🙂

Our dog gets up on tables (not with our permission) and walks along the back of the couch – yes, Little Kitty (who was about 24 pounds to his 15) raised him 🙂

    2. I know that feeling Vicki. Sunday night it was the cats keeping me up at 3:30 and last night the thunderstorms at 4:30, what will tonight bring? Glad your dog is ok.

      1. I hope tonight brings a nice breeze and open windows!!! And maybe a fun storm BEFORE bedtime 🙂

  12. Thanks, TK.

I don’t mind any rain we get this week (apologies to those on vacation this wk.). We should be grateful that we are not experiencing any drought conditions or excessive heat. I like when the weather mixes around – some HHH but some cool and dry weather thrown in to refresh us.

We went to Gloucester during the wknd. – it was nice. We packed a picnic. Not only is it less expensive but it is fun. (Must be the English in me – I have a lot of relatives in England and great-grandparents were from England). In any case, I hope we don’t get any severe weather, ‘though I do enjoy tracking thunderstorms.

    1. Your weekend sounds great. We used to pack picnic dinners and head to Good Harbor Beach in Gloucester when the kids were little. It is a lovely area!!!

I like the mix of weather this summer to. Just enough HHH to make it feel like summer and then the cooler days/nights in between. I’m hoping it gets the rain out of its system before the last two weeks of August though. I don’t mind rain when we are at the beach but not the whole time 🙂

  13. Storm rolled through Easton this morning about a half hour before I needed to get up…nothing like a natural alarm clock! I think Phillip called that storm too 🙂

      1. Mac says it’s a great course – he thought it was private. He hasn’t played it for a few years but I got two coupons (for him and our son)

  14. Storm Prediction Center has eastern parts of SNE in the slight risk for severe weather this afternoon. I don’t expect this to be like last Wednesday but there is POTENTIAL for a few strong to possibly locally severe thunderstorm. With that said level 2 activity is possible since there is the threat of some severe weather. Tomorrow is the pick of the week. Looks like we may be dealing with more showers and storms on Thursday and storm prediction center has parts of SNE in the slight risk.

    1. Thanks, JJ. Looks like some showers already developing in northwestern MA and out in NY state.

    1. lots of cloud cover here replacing the blue sky – wonder if that will cut down on severity of storms

    1. Thanks JJ – that makes sense. I didn’t think they had the technology to incorporate multiple models but that would be pretty cool!

  15. When were dealing with the threat of thunderstorms, snow rain, or a wintry mix I wish we could see at least two depictions of what could happen. I know the time on the air is short when giving the weather but I think it would help people if they could see two model depictions.

    1. I absolutely agree – I think it would also help people understand why a met can’t predict with certainty in this area

  16. Just read the latest discussions from the storm prediction center and a severe thunderstorm watch might be issued for eastern parts of SNE.
Thunderstorm Index at 2 for those areas since there could be strong to possibly locally severe storms but nothing like last Wednesday.

  17. Severe thunderstorm watch issued for most of eastern MA until around 8:00. Looks like a pretty good line of storms moving south-southeast from Maine all the way to Vermont. Sun is in and out in Sudbury.

    1. Sun out here too but some clouds really beginning to build to the north and wind pretty consistent

      1. Cloudy now and rather dark to north. Looked at doppler radar and storms seem to be moving fast. Sky is picturesque with all types of clouds.

  18. Those temperatures and the dew point up there will allow for these storms to develop. Once this goes through beautiful day for tomorrow.

  19. Special weather statement for line of strong thunderstorms for North Shore into Boston. Isn’t that the same area that had some strong storms last wk.?

  20. Yikes…that looks like some strong storms in northern MA. We didn’t get a lot of rain, but had one, what seemed like, dying storm go over us last not about 7:30pm and stronger ones pass through btwn 10:30pm and midnight. In the extremely dark Adirondacks, the lightning show was fantastic, but I think one storm missed us to the north and one to the south. As a result, I’m not sure we received more than .1 inches. Just received a heavy shower at the base of Whiteface Mtn. just outside of Lake Placid.

  21. Worcester getting a strong thunderstorm, too. Just went outside – warm and humid. Not raining yet. If it does here.

  22. Vicki – does your daughter live in Uxbridge area? There is a Severe Thunderstorm warning for southern Worcester and Middlesex county ’til 4 or 4:30. I don’t know if the storm will hold together, just so you know.

Hearing a little thunder and it’s gotten windier. Air feels a bit cooler and drier. Probably just due to all the storms around.

    1. She does rainshine. Thanks for posting. My youngest is in Uxbridge taking care of the kids and was going to leave soon to head back here. Shed be driving right into it I saw your post so called to tell them thank you

I hear thunder here too. I think it will go just west of me

  23. Blows my mind the NWS didn’t put a warning on the cell currently blasting the north shore area, hail up to 2.25″ in diameter.

  24. Looks like there is a mariner’s warning for Boston-south. I don’t know why they don’t have it more inland. Also, looks like there are more storms to the north and west of here. Wonder if this is going to go on into the night. I think I read NWS saying there could be some post-frontal storms firing up.

    1. Not saying there shouldn’t be a mariner’s warning – just a severe thunderstorm warning also for the inland areas.

        1. I think so. Not really sure – maybe some energy left over or something. Bright and sunny in Sudbury again!

  25. Vicki – Severe thunderstorms have weakened near where your daughter lives. They have cancelled that warning.

  26. Actually, I am not sure if the front has gone by yet. I don’t have a weather station and there is not much wind here now. So maybe the front is still north of here.

In any case, I guess we should all enjoy tomorrow as the next several days don’t look so great. But we do need the rain.

  27. Tomorrow is great. The other days the it won’t rain all the time so trying to look at it as glass half full. Of more interest Thursday is the POTENTIAL that some spots in SNE COULD see severe storms as indicated by the SPC placing a good part of SNE in the slight risk. Will see what they say when they update this tomorrow.

  28. MOST areas got off easy today. A few got pounded with torrential rain and street flooding. Lightning was not as prolific as it was last Wednesday. For the most part we are done except what is going thru southeastern MA & RI. There is a bank of built cumulus just north of me here north of Boston so it’s still a little unstable out there. Isolated showers/storms cannot be completely ruled out over the next few hours in areas that already saw activity.

    1. Yes TK we in Boston (or at least at home in Dorchester) absolutely got off easy. It got somewhat dark but just a few rumbles and that was about it. The radar had the heavy stuff JUST offshore in Boston Harbor. I did notice the darker clouds to the east as opposed to the west which made me breathe a sigh of relief. 🙂

TK, did the storms just before sunrise this morning make the difference?

      1. I don’t think they made much difference. The atmosphere was not as unstable today.

    1. I think it’s a fair bet that it will be quite wet from late Thurday morning into Friday morning. How much rain falls after that is in question. There is another disturbance sometime this weekend but that one may be far enough south to spare the area steady rain later Saturday into early Sunday. For now, count on that Thursday-early Friday period being the wettest.

    1. Isn’t that what they just had in VA and that area. A widespread straight line wind. I’m sure that’s a very inaccurate but I think that’s what they had

  29. The mets were spot on in terms of forecasting the most instability today over eastern sections. I hope you guys will be as good this upcoming winter! 😉

Good job as always TK! 🙂

  30. Just saw the coolest thing. There is a cloud over my yard. Every 12 seconds the cloud fills with a lightning flash, than once in awhile a lightning bolt. So cool.

    1. John we’ve seen that over the ocean. It’s incredible. Nothing touches mother natures light show!

      1. John you have a warning just east of you

How was your drive in this morning? Was it during the storms. I was thinking it might have been

  31. tWC is driving me nuts. I just got a tstorm warning from them for Framingham. It happens all the time when nothing is even close.

        1. I know but isn’t it odd both TWC and whdh. Maybe whdh is based on tWC. TWC is always sending me wrong warnings

In the meantime the wind has really picked up. I love it

  32. This should be the last round of showers and storms. A nice break tomorrow before possibly more showers and storms some could be strong to possibly severe on Thursday for parts of SNE.

    1. We seem to have missed everything today – sniff 🙁 It is amazing how quickly these storms seemed to have been moving.

  33. I witnessed some of the best clouds and some of the best lightning bolts this evening. The series of small, fasting-moving storms put on quite a show where they occurred. The final one that came southward from Nashua NH crossed the northern suburbs and North Shore during the 8PM hour but as of 9PM was sitting over Boston Harbor firing bolts out of a storm tower still lit dimly by the twilight.

As this thing was coming overhead around 8:30PM, the scud clouds rising into the base were amazing, and a “scudnado” was observed at Woburn. This was well photographed by a friend of mine. From my house it was more obscured by trees and harder to see. The “scudnado”, or “fakenado” as we also call it, is nothing more than a tail of very low clouds rising into the base of a developing storm. By physics, it often looks like a funnel, but it lacks the smooth edges, and has NO rotation. The cloud itself is harmless, but often gets reported as a funnel or tornado.
