Sunday April 13 2025 Forecast (7:16AM)

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 13-17)

Our stretch of chilly and unsettled weather has one more day left in it. Another low pressure area passes east of New England today, tossing a precipitation shield back into our region. The longest it will rain is over Cape Cod, the South Coast, and MA South Shore where it’s already ongoing. These areas will sit under the precipitation shield longest as it pivots to the west of the passing low pressure area. The area will extend northwest and west, but in the areas where it would have most likely mixed with sleet and snow it won’t really fully reach – the areas that got the heaviest snow yesterday, being the Worcester Hills. Those areas will just see some spotty light rain for a few hours around midday. As we move through the afternoon, drier air will begin to erode the western side of the offshore system and the precipitation shield will begin to break up somewhat. I can’t fully rule out some breaks in the clouds appearing from the I-95 belt westward, but for the most part it will remain overcast through the day, with temperatures significantly below normal for the middle of April. Finally it clears out tonight as the low pressure area pulls away, and high pressure builds toward and into the region through Monday, which will be a fair and milder day across the region. Weather systems will then display a little more swift movement from west to east, and the next low pressure area, destined to pass north of our region, will send its warm front through the region Monday night and early Tuesday, and its cold front through Tuesday afternoon. These fronts can produce some wet weather, but I’m not looking for a Tuesday washout, with most of the rain pre-dawn with the warm front, and just a passing shower or two associated with the cold front. Cooler Canadian air will be with us for the middle of the coming week, but it will be dry, with a healthy northwesterly air flow Wednesday into Thursday before it slackens.

TODAY: Overcast through midday with areas of drizzle. Rain steadiest for longest South Coast / Cape Cod / MA South Shore, with most rain mid morning to mid afternoon I-95 to I-495 belts, starting to taper off later on. Highs 37-44. Wind NE to N 5-15 MPH with gusts 20+ MPH from midday on.

TONIGHT: Slow clearing west to east. Lows 33-40. Wind N to NW 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 57-64. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT: Clouding up. A period of rain possible late night. Lows 43-50. Wind S 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY: Sun/cloud mix. A passing rain shower possible. Highs 57-64. Wind SW shifting to NW 10-20 MPH, a few higher gusts possible.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Clearing. Lows 38-45. Wind NW 10-20 MPH, gusty.

WEDNESDAY: Partly cloudy. Highs 52-59. Wind NW 10-20 MPH, gusty.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 33-40. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, gusty.

THURSDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 53-60. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, gusty, diminishing late.

DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 18-22)

Unsettled weather potential April 18-19 with a west-to-east moving low pressure area and frontal system. Current indications are for fair weather mid period and unsettled weather chances increasing again late in the period. Temperatures near to below normal.

DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 23-27)

Pattern should feature a lot of high pressure in eastern Canada and more suppressed high pressure over the US Southeast, with a frontal zone between. This set-up in springtime tends to keep us cool and potentially unsettled.

    1. I love today’s weather. Looking forward to my misty, rainy, chilly walk around Horn Pond in Woburn at midday, after getting a brunch with mom. 🙂

  1. Thanks, TK!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TOM!

On the way home from church yesterday afternoon, we drove past a sports complex and saw hundreds of young lacrosse and soccer players playing their games in this weather.

This made me think: Mark, please tell me that you’ve not been at a softball field all weekend!!!! 🙂

      1. I see what I think you saw. My only question is what is above the camera? Could there be some sort of structure/roof/overhang above the camera and what we are seeing are drops coming down from the edge???

  2. RRFS vs HRRR …

    Next 6 hours.

More rain in the I-95 belt is a win for RRFS.
Less rain in the I-95 belt is a win for HRRR.

  3. Departing for the UK. Not feeling like I ever want to return to the US. But I can’t overstay my 90 to 180 day/year visa if I want to secure a permanent residence visa in the UK. Their stretch of really nice weather is about to end. It looks like umbrella weather ahead over there for a while. Mind you, it’s hardly ever a washout day. Usually lots of variability on any given day – more variability than here.

  4. According to Jacob this morning:

*10 of last 13 days have been wet
    * 6 wet weekends in a row (next weekend as well)

    I guess it’s not our imagination. 🙁

    1. Nobody said it was anyone’s imagination. We had a dry March, and a wet start to April. It’s just the current pattern. Cool and wet. Not atypical of spring in New England. Canada is still cold with snow cover. The ocean is 6 weeks beyond its coldest. We’ve been in the mean trough position. It all makes perfect meteorological sense. 🙂

      1. Eric agrees with you. Repost of a tweet from Eric yesterday

Last year Mar 1st through today was cooler, much wetter, and with a bit more snow than this year

Last March didn’t even hit 60F until the final day. This March had eight 60+ days

        1. Yep! This is the example of “recency bias”. Many of us will remember the recent weather (in this case, the cool, wet start to April) as “the weather has been like this forever”. It’s quite natural for the human mind to do so. 🙂 That’s where the reminders are needed.

I just replied to a post my cousin made on Facebook about how bad the Red Sox are and the season is “over”. You can imagine what I said. 😉

          1. You said, “Why did it take you so long to realize that the season is over? It was obvious during the second week of pre-season. There’s no point in even playing this year.”

            Is that right?

            🙂

    2. Cindy was on this morning at 5:30 . As far as next Friday goes I’m seeing very nice day , a bit breezy .

      1. Keep in mind it’s fully day 5.

Model guidance often is not quick enough with eastward-moving disturbances after a temporary block lets go. Friday may start out OK, but may not end that way.

Warm front clouds and precipitation tend to run faster than guidance indicates this far in advance.

        1. Tk I am begging it’s a dry day . I could use the money & I know the boys want to head back to college with some fresh bills in there pocket .

  5. Mac played Augusta when in college. His uncle took him, but I’m not sure how they were able to play. I have not been able to find the golf towel he had from Augusta since we moved. It showed up this morning in an unexpected place. I’ll take that as a sign that he’s watching with us once again

As an aside. I do not care for dechambeau. He acts like a pompous arse. And I do wish Rory didn’t have to partner with him today. I am afraid it will impact his concentration

    1. HRRR did a little better. There is some precipitation generating now, as the RRFS said, but not as much.

  6. Red Sox won today.

Yay! I guess that means we’re going to win the world series! I should tell my cousin the good news!! 😉

    1. Well, I won’t totally disagree with your cousin in the sense that the Red Sox haven’t been playing as well as we would like. Fortunately, the Yankees and the rest of the division are playing .500 ball as well, at least for now. They can’t continue to play this type of baseball in the coming months, that’s for sure. It won’t take long for the Yankees and other teams to “figure it out” and runaway from the pack.

Today’s win does make me feel better though!

      1. They’ll have ups and downs. They’re not going to be #1 in the league by any stretch, but they’ll be better than last season. And with as many games as they play, we’ll string losses and wins together. It’s the nature of it.

    2. And Celtics in last game of regular season. And Bruins up 3-1 after 2nd. Also last game of season. Rory leading in Masters.

  7. Rory looks in great shape at the moment to get the career grand slam. Only other golfers who have done it Jack Nickalus Tiger Woods Gary Player and Gene Sarazen.

  8. So typical weather pattern for this time of year. How often do we get a warm dry April? Maybe 1 or 2 in 10 Aprils? Hopefully by the second week of May this pattern will start to break down.

    1. Well, like any month, the variability is where we get the averages.

The thing with April in New England: It’s not unusual to be quite cool, especially near the coast, and sometimes regionwide (like now), and it’s not unusual to be fairly cloudy and sometimes wet.

It seems like media is having a LOT of trouble getting people to understand this extremely simple concept lately. We see it in posts like the one Eric Fisher made. Nothing’s changed, yet everyone seems to think this is a one of a kind spring we’ve never had before. No. We had a mild, slightly dry March, and the first (almost) half of April has been cool and wet. Nothing weird about it.

      1. I’m okay with cloudy, wet, and cool but would appreciate if you make that part happen on weekdays and not weekends! TIA 🙂

        1. haha!! sometimes when you’re in a pattern…

I think next weekend (which is a 3-day weekend for many) we have a decent shot at getting 2/3 of it in without any precipitation … but, it’s a way off, so we’ll see.

  9. I still can’t believe from 86 yards on the 13th hole 3rd shot Rory put it in the water. He was up 4 shots.

    1. Mac’s number is 11. He passed on 11:11.

This is 11th time he’s tried. I’m going with his ball flew on angels wings.

Rose is great and what a match he played. But wow. Just wow.

      1. Wow is the right word. An unbelievable moment that he can treasure throughout his life. Amazing!

        1. First time I think I’ve cried at the end of the masters. It was hard not to watching his reaction.

          1. The weight of the world has been lifted off Rory’s shoulders now that he has finally completed the career grand slam.

  10. So there’s a lot of optimism about a bit warm-up based on a mostly auto-generated map by CPC. Folks here in New England expecting a major pattern change are going to be in for a surprise, because it’s a “not so fast” kind of situation here. While there are certainly going to be some milder interludes, the cooler regime isn’t really going away fully, not with as much high pressure as there will be in eastern Canada. You watch…
