Yup, It’s Still August…

4:35PM

The calendar says mid August, and the weather is behaving as such. This will continue to be the case over the coming several days as a mean ridge sits in the western Atlantic and a mean trough positions itself in the Great Lakes.

One disturbance exiting the region this evening will set off a few more showers and thunderstorms mainly in southern NH which will quickly fade with the setting sun.

A cold front will approach late Friday then cross the region Friday night and early Saturday. Showers and thunderstorms are possible with this feature, but I expect activity to be limited due to the timing of the front through the forecast area. The front will linger just offshore for part of the weekend but other than some additional showers hanging around Cape Cod and the Islands at times, and a few isolated pop up showers and storms possible on Saturday elsewhere, most of the region will be rain-free during the weekend.

We will have to watch a wave of low pressure that would bring some wet weather Monday if it got close enough, but confidence is low on this at the moment. The rest of the early to middle part of next week looks fair, warm, and somewhat humid.

Updated forecast for eastern MA, southern NH, and RI…

  1. Thanks TK as always for the update. All media outlets including NWS continue to advertise nice, dry Canadian air for Monday with not even a mention of a remote possibility of rain.

    1. Can’t wait, I’m so sick of waking up to temps of 65-70 and even a 71 degree reading 1 morning, its just a little to warm for me, it will be nice waking up to temps closer to 60 🙂

  2. 8:00 and it’s dark, now that I’m not happy with but the cooler late summer early fall temps next week are great, I also see towards later in month another step closer to fall as highs could come closer to 75-78 and nights closer to 55, where I live early next week I expect a temp around 57-58 degrees when I get up in am, it’s gonna bring smiles to me, have a good day everyone and enjoy this last close to 90 degree day tommorrow bc I’m not 🙂

    1. Tomorrow won’t be the last “near 90” day. There will be several more later this month as well as in September.

  3. Last hour, from 7 to 8pm, Logan’s temp fell 9F, but its dewpoint rose 6F. The culprit, a windshift from NW to NE…….its interesting to see the mid-upper 50F dewpoints most everywhere else. Here, the dewpoint the last 2 hrs has been running 68F to 70F, with very light winds. It feels very tropical outside.

      1. Probably…..water temp in Boston Harbor is 71F. Just had to run an errand and the car top and lawn were already wet with dew.

    1. Even inland several miles, I noticed a difference in how the air feels and smells during the past hour or so.

  4. my new neibors started to move in the other day and they have 2 children my youngest brother age around 11 to 13 and then a daughter and a son that look to be in high school. the two older children saw my younger brother and me and stared at us for like 5 minutes and then the dad came out and stared at us and looked angry. looks scary. 🙁

      1. My husband said when his family moved from country to country it was scary at first. They didn’t know the customs yet or the language. I hope it works out Matt.

        1. i did wave back thats when the dad came out and told the daughter to go inside i think. could not really understand him

            1. My advice is to tread extremely lightly here with these new neighbors. The dad could very well have “anger” issues…at the very least “controlling”.

              1. I hope not . because if he gets angry at me just being in the pool i hope he does not loose it when i have friends over and have the music going . they are not totally moved in i have only seen them durring the late mornings with moving equipment but the girl keeps staring over our pool fence.

            2. my ankle is doing better ,still have the brace but they say that i will have to keep it on for any physical activity( they say that it could take all of ski season as well to heal. 🙁 ). I can not bike until september. but i will be able to do band camp next week. 🙂 the doctor told me to give all the contact info to any activity that i do so he can tell them to watch me and examine my ankle. before i do anything. and if they see something while i am doing something to take me out of what ever i am doing. 🙁

              1. I do hope it heals quickly, Matt, and that you will be able to get back to the activities you enjoy!

  5. A beautiful morning, temp is 61.6 🙂 could hit 90 today, not sure we hit 90 degrees again this year, a nice dew on the lawns,

    1. It sure is a beautiful morning! Was so nice last night to have the A/C off and the window fan on. But, I suspect the A/C will be blasting away in a few hours. Happy Friday everyone!!!

      1. Hi shotime and it was nice to have fresh air overnight wasn’t it. I just put my ACs on. I find if I get the humdity out early then I can leave them off for the most part during the day and the house stays comfortable with just ceiling fans. I’m a miser when it comes to electricity 🙂

  6. Only a level one thunderstorm day today. The airmass to me is marginally unstable and it looks like the highest potential for the stronger storms will be western parts of SNE. I agree with the SPC see outlook and not putting us in the slight risk area but as always its worth keeping an eye on.

  7. “mean ridge sits in the western Atlantic and a mean trough positions itself in the Great Lakes.” Why are the ridge and trough mean? 😛 I like them, I think they are nice 😉

I’m loving this weather 🙂 But I am still really excited for the Fall!!! 😀

  8. Any thoughts on what the weather will be like down the Cape tomorrow? Im hearing showers, but wondering how much of the day will be salvaged if any? My wife and I are supposed to have friends down with their two kids, but if it rains won’t be too much fun having eight people(including 4 kids) in a trailer..We are thinking of just having them come to our house.

    1. I hope that you are not complaining about that…seems very nice to me assuming the sun is out as well. 🙂

  9. i am hoping for a nice comfy week next week for band camp. and then make it great beach weather for the following week when i go to the cape.

  10. A few storms are popping ahead of the line in central NY State. One in the Berkshires, another near Laconia and more in northeastern VT.

  11. Temps Sat.Sun and Mon will be 75-80 and nights 55-60, places like Norwood could see 53 or 54 degrees 🙂

  12. looks like tomorrow will be in the low to mid 70s with morning showers ,then the chance also into sunday. but a tad warmer in the high 70s to low 80s all of next week.

  13. The GFS tropical entertainment has returned on the 18z run of the GFS 🙂 Some sort of low to moderate strength tropical system coming right up the coast, curving just southeast of Nantucket (many, many days out).

Looks like the showers/storms are maintaining themselves pretty well out in the Springfield area.

          1. Have fun Vicki and enjoy your time there. We will try to keep the tropical systems away from you, so you don’t make it three years in a row :).

    1. I just looked at the Atlantic GFS from 18Z and the storm it has coming up the coast, looks to be the one that has a 20% chance off of the coast of Africa right now. Both the 12Z and 18Z runs show it developing once it gets further west, so it may be one we have to watch starting late next week.

  14. 924 PM EDT FRI AUG 17 2012
…STRONG THUNDERSTORM FORMING NEAR NATICK HEADING TOWARD BOSTON…
AT 921 PM…A STRONG THUNDERSTORM CAPABLE OF PRODUCING SMALL HAIL WAS OVER NATICK AND WAS MOVING EAST AT 30 MPH.
THIS STORM WILL MOVE EAST ALONG THE MASS PIKE…AND SHOULD REACH
    BOSTON AROUND 10 PM.

  15. Don’t forget just over a week ago the GFS had a hurricane coming up the East Coast for about August 21, which is probably going to be a beautiful day around here. 🙂

    1. Very true ! ……. I think as early as last Tues/Wed, you talked about possible rain for this coming Monday. Sure enough, the models are bringing that wave of low pressure closer and the TV weathercasts are starting to introduce rain chances to their forecasts for Monday.

  16. Am I allowed to mention the 6z GFS solution for around Aug 31/Sept 1 ? 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 I know, I know….it will end up being another beautiful sunny day, which would be good considering its Labor Day Weekend.

  17. Gordon the second hurricane of the season Chris being the other one. What is interesting both became hurricanes pretty far north in the Atlantic. We got Helenne a weak tropical storm then another wave with a 40% chance of developing. Hopefully the trough hangs out over the east coast and keeps whatever develops there a fish storm.

    1. Hi Vicki.

I agree that the radar makes it look that way, but the look of the clouds make me think it might be just sprinkles/light showers thru mid to late afternoon. Welcome to the coast, if you have arrived.

      1. Almost there. Thanks Tom. Can’t believe traffic going north. Stop and go from Hanover well past split on 93/95

          1. That sounds about right 🙂 🙂 All those Saturday to Saturday rentals headed home early today with the rain on the Cape.
