Saturday PM Update

3:35PM

AFTERNOON/EARLY EVENING: Tropical air mass in place and a disturbance passing by leads to isolated to scattered showers and possible thunderstorms. A few downpours possible. The severe weather has been to the west of the forecast area and it should remain that way during this time.

NIGHT: Main squall line crosses the region from west to east between 9PM and 1AM as the cold front moves into the region, but I still feel this will be on a weakening trend and though there could be localized wind damage, heavy rain, and some lightning, most areas will likely escape severe weather (damaging winds and large hail). Watch for brief flash flooding in heavier downpours.

SUNDAY: Everything pushes offshore to the east with the cold front. Improving weather!

NEXT WEEK: Fantastic September weather, cool start, warm finish!

Updated forecast for eastern MA, RI, and southern NH…

THROUGH EVENING: Variably cloudy. Isolated to scattered showers and possible thunderstorms. Brief downpours possible. Most areas will not be raining at any given time. Very humid. Temperatures falling through the 70s. Wind S-SW 10-20 MPH, higher gusts.

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. A line of showers and thunderstorms moving west to east across the region through about 1AM, may produce torrential rain and strong wind for a brief time. Very humid. Lows 63-68. Wind S 10-20 MPH with higher gusts, shifting to W late.

SUNDAY: One more batch of showers may cross Cape Cod/Islands and extreme eastern MA in the morning otherwise partly sunny. Lowering humidity. Highs 73-78. Wind W 10-20 MPH early then diminishing, shifting to N late.

MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY: Mostly clear to partly cloudy throughout the period. Overnight average lows 50 Monday, 48 Tuesday -Wednesday, lower 50s Thursday-Friday. Daytime average highs 73 Monday, 71 Tuesday, 78 Wednesday, 81 Thursday, 83 Friday.

  1. Thanks TK. Stay safe at Hampton

We were just on wellesley and several very short lived rainstorms went thru

  2. Reporting from Lyndon State College, got a wind driven rain now, don’t expect the main line to produce anything severe.
I agree with TK that there will probably not be any severe weather close to the coast line. Wind gusts could reach 40 MPH in spots tonight along with flash flooding.

    1. Probably some 30s up there early next week……. I remember snow around Columbus Day Weekend up there one time.

  3. Thanks TK !

North Pole Web Cams are both covered by snow and Barrow, AK had a dusting of snow on the ground this morning…..Meanwhile, here in the tropics………….

  4. Severe thunderstorm watch posted till 11:00 tonight.

      1. Does the watch include your area? I didn’t see it but may have missed with all the areas listed

The warning boxes line the front and continue to move ever so slowly east. Most of VT now in warning boxes

  5. Albany in the most recent 1 hr went from a temp and dew pt. of 82F / 70F to 62F / 59F. They had a 35 knot wind gust as that squall line went by.

  6. I was thinking about what seems to be more severe weather – esp tornado threat – around NYC and it makes sense since for the first time in close to 20 years we are consistently having the storms come from the SW rather than W or even NW. As I’ve said several times we’ve never had rain come onto our porch from the S/SW and yet again today that’s what is happening as well as the other day. Not sure this makes sense but seems to me to be tied together

    1. I’ve noticed that, too, Vicki. I think it has been going on for a few yrs. Particularly back in the summer of 2008. From May-Sept. we were getting thunderstorms 4 or 5 days a wk. and the storms seemed to be moving south to north. Our apt. in Framingham at the time was a southfacing apt. Before that time, summer storms seemed to come from the northwest. And you could have a point – more severe weather and it’s coming more from the southwest.

      1. Odd weather. My daughter just called and was saying she never remembers so many tornado warnings in new England

  7. Gusty as all heck down here in Plymouth. Took a ride by the beach but the waves weren’t terribly big. I am very much looking forward to this tropical air to go away!

    1. What’s on your menu Charlie. I started cooking and we stopped at package store a few times already. Go pats

  8. i did not know the carnival was in lowell. lol bring on the rain. It always rain and its going to happen tonight

  9. Been outside for a while and the humidity has ramped up even more ahead of the front the last few hours……having occasional 30 second showers race through, then you’ll look up and see stars.

      1. Considerable t and l to our south and then west. Right now seems quiet. I love storms at night since they light up the sky but not if there is a threat of tornadoes although I don’t feel as if that threat is here tonight

      2. Its interesting. I think your area may be between the line approaching from the west and an intensifying line of showers (to your east ?) that stretches from Providence to Boston. Kind of curious to see if these 2 lines merge at the coast.

          1. The line to the east was very noisy (evident) for not being very close wonder of itll take some energy from the atmosphere.

            1. Maybe so on the energy idea…..the wind here is howling and the clouds are flying by. Thank goodness for that breeze…..I just cant wait for that dry air and to get some nights in the 40s to clear the air out of homes and buildings.

  10. I was watching the line around Crawford notch and although there was a warning box it didn’t look strong. Seems they just had a dry/clear slot go over

It looks as of all warnings have been lifted in eastern MA too or am I missing something

    1. I see what you mean on the radar. Hopefully some light to moderate rainshowers is all they have to contend with.

Yes, there are no warnings currently.

  11. The cooler air can’t come fast enough!!! Our house is like a steam bath, awful!! Thank goodness for windows AC!! I am ready for fall!

    1. Agreed ! After this cool spell, I’d like to see some more warm afternoons near 80F but not with this level of humidity.

Unfortunately, I’d think with the ocean being warm in September, that its likely another humid period will be back later in the month.

      1. Off and on downpours with some gusty winds here in Hingham. Looks like a second line developed ahead of the main line. Winds very gusty as I type this.

      1. Haven’t had any thunder though. The clouds were amazing earlier before it got dark. Between low clouds zooming by, you could see some blue sky and tall clouds!

  12. Nothing here in Pembroke. Light shower earlier. Wind is not even blowing that hard. Don’t get why they don’t call this game, like hello look at the field. Call it fool’s.

  13. I trust this will be the last muggy, sticky night for awhile. The problem is my bet is that the muggies and stickies will return come next weekend. ๐Ÿ™

Also wanna bet that the AC’s will still be humming come Halloween?…UGH! ๐Ÿ™

    1. Dude not here. Got my electric bill today, ouch. Pool should be closed tomorrow afternoon. My ac has been on since Tuesday.

      1. We will push the pool for at least one more week. The first year here (2007) we had the pool open till the 1st weekend in October. Each year since then the trees have grown much higher blocking out sunlight in the pool area till around 11am this time of year. Will cut back some of the trees this fall or next spring and hopefully that will help.

  14. Justlooked at the radar estimated totals and east of a Keene, Springfield and Hartford line Less than a half an inch and in most cases less than a third.

  15. Today’s AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.

During which season is the Jet Stream strongest in the Northern Hemisphere?

    1) Summer
    2) Fall
    3) Winter
    4) Spring

    I finally got one right!!

    1. Also, note that clearing doesn’t seem that far away for MA. Just depends on how fast clouds can move out.

    1. I agree with Jimmy that it is winter…so what is the answer? I missed most of Joe’s forecasts this morning.
