The Week Ahead

1:14AM

Upper level low pressure exits New England to the east today and high pressure ridging dominates much of this coming week, both at the surface and aloft. The coolest part of the week will be through early Wednesday as the region will be on the east side of high pressure. As the upper ridge crests over the area and surface high pressure slips to the south and east from mid to late week, the air will warm up. A weak front may shift winds back to north or east toward the weekend at which time it may cool down slightly. It looks like the next weather system of any significance will hold off until after the weekend, making 7 dry days very possible for much of the forecast area (eastern MA, RI, southern NH)…

TODAY: Mixed sun and clouds. Highs 70-75. Wind N 10-15 MPH.

TONIGHT: Partly to mostly clear. Lows 45-55, coolest valleys, mildest urban centers. Wind NW under 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 70-75. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 47-55, coolest valleys, mildest urban centers. Wind SW 5-10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 75-80. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

THURSDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 60. High 80.

FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 61. High 81.

SATURDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 58. High 78.

SUNDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 55. High 74.

  1. Repost: Since some people asked about the answer to the the AccuWeather quiz. (Answer below)

During which season is the Jet Stream strongest in the Northern Hemisphere?

    1) Summer
    2) Fall
    3) Winter
    4) Spring

Correct answer to the quiz is Winter.

    1. I’m sure the hopefull will continue to think snow but let the truth be told, we will have a winter closer to Delaware with 15-20 inches of snow and most of it will be after Jan 🙂

      1. Charlie – you basing this on global warming or hunch or something else? Last year’s winter was equivalent to Delaware’s. I’m also curious if you are thinking that this is the new trend or temporary?

      2. Not sure about 15-20 but an early feeling from me is that I will be forecasting below normal snowfall here. I want to see what happens during Fall before I go “official”.

  2. Beautiful fall weather, the low around here in the suburbs could see a few low 40’s!! Patriots look good, could the Patriots be going to there 8th Superbowl in Franchise history (3way tie for most appearances)? Time will tell, hope all is well.

      1. Defense is where the work needed to be done and you are right, Matt. I’m surprised there is a hesitation to push back on an extra year or two for Welker. I do believe they were making a point but they also can’t count on just Ridley.

  3. temperatures have not gone above 65 degrees today and with the increased cloud cover i do not think we will get any warmer its a more northwest wind

  4. It’s kind of a grey day today, and rather chilly. But I don’t mind. It is Sept., after all.

Glad the Patriots won – great game.

Wonder if anyone here is a tennis fan? My husband and me love watching tennis – have been watching the US Open. Lots of fun and very exciting if you are a tennis fan. When we were first married, we played a little tennis. We did great – I served – my husband picked up the ball – served – I picked up the ball. Once in awhile we got a good volley going! 🙂

    1. hahahahaha – that’s how I play tennis. Oddly I have really good eye-hand coordination but no matter how hard I tried I could never get the racket to connect to the tennis ball. Mac’s mom used to love watching tennis. It’s pretty much golf and football in this house. I was really into NASCAR for a bit but not so much any more

      1. Actually, we used to watch golf a lot years ago. My husband played a little golf before we met – but then his job at the time gave him less time to play. However, at times we both played miniature golf and pitch and putt. I loved pitch and putt! I don’t see that around anymore – wonder if there is any pitch and putts around anymore. In any case, it’s football (mainly the Patriots) and tennis in our house.

        1. Hey rainshine, there are 2 pitch and putts near me. One right down the street from me in Norton, and another in South Attleboro

    1. A girl my daughter rode with has a brother who was really into Tennis – played in high school and when he went to Bentley. I went with his mom to watch several matches and enjoyed it.

    2. That’s great, Hadi! ‘Though some people may think tennis is an easy game, believe me, from what I see it’s a lot of work and takes a lot of skill. Through the years I’ve noticed that tennis has become more extreme, but I guess a lot of sports nowadays is more extreme.

  5. Charlie any reasoning behind your forecast, you were very accurate last year. But to make that assertion this early you must have reasoning behind your thinking.

    1. 🙂 I just asked the same question above. He and Longshot if I remember were pretty much on the money last year. Will have to look.

    1. I’ll start I hate winter period. But again the below average for snow will not hold. My call is a downright cold And snowy winter all around. My findings based on gut feeling. Take it how you want it, It’s my call. But be prepared. Remember the acorns, there falling.

  6. Just for fun these are the total that everyone guessed last year. I believe we ended up with 9.1 inches but only have amounts until 3/1/12 so maybe the 9.1 is not correct.

    Longshot 3.00
    Charlie 23.90
    Tom 27.00
    retrac 29.00
    Rainshine 30.00
    Vicki 38.00
    JimmyJames 43.00
    John 48.00
    Philip 53.00
    Tjammer 55.00
    TK 57.00
    Mark 58.40
    Old Salty 60.00
    Merlin 67.00
    Coastal 79.00
    Hadi 82.00
    Scott 84.00

  7. I watch the tennis majors. For the fifth straight year a Monday finish for the U.S. Open. Will see if Andy Murray could win his first major to go with his Olympic goal or if Djokovic defends his U.S. Open title.
As for snowfall way too early but if I had to give a range I would say 20-30 inches. I have read that it will be a west based El Nino which is weak that favors colder than normal temps in the east but to me there are other factors that need to be examined.
I look at the temps in October and November and I have noticed that when they average below normal temperature wise that is when we get our roughest winters in terms of snowfall and cold. When they are above average like last year we tend to get off easy as was the case last winter.

  8. Combining CPC’s 6-10 & 8-14 day outlooks, they go warm & wet for New England. That’s a no-change-in-temp forecast but an bit of an upswing from their drier trend in recent outlooks. I’m guessing a warm and seasonably showery mid to late September is shaping up. Retrogression should keep that chilly pocket in the middle of the country with only brief cool shots such as the one we are having today and tomorrow.

      1. Stayed in the 60s. Nice preview of actual Autumn. Cooler than I had in the forecast, but I won’t complain.

      1. John, if you are corrrect that 2012 was the hottest year ever, I don’t understand how you can go with so much snow for this winter. ❓

        1. I am correct on the hottest year ever since record taking started in I believe 1830. NOAA website., I don’t doubt that. I go with my forecast mostly based on my gut feelings. I also look at some other factors. For what willbe the last time saying, I believe this winter will be like the ones I remembered growing up down here as a kid. And unfortunately the cost of oil is going to skyrocket. Again just my thinking. Always a pleasure.

  9. Just for the record, Boston received 9.3″ of snow last winter…UGH!

For now I agree with TK for below normal snowfall.

  10. 59F on the truck thermometer….skies clearing out quickly.

The ocean was choppy from the NW wind, but looking at the jetty, every once in a while, there looked like there was a thick, but not especially tall ocean swell rolling into shore.

  11. The only 70F + dewpoints in the continental US are in south-central Florida. Even New Orleans and Myrtle Beach have dewpoints of 59F…..

The Dakotas must still be parched as its 100F on the backside of this high pressure in South Dakota, with very low dewpoints.

  12. A few times in the last week or so my six-year old son insists that he smells snow. Not sure if it is just that he smells people’s fires and associates it with snow/cold or if he is predicting our upcoming winter. 🙂 Perhaps he is the snow whisperer. 🙂
