The Rest Of The Week Ahead

4:42PM

With Monday, Columbus Day, winding down, we look to the 6 remaining days of this week (through the weekend upcoming). We remain in a southwesterly flow aloft, and this is allowing yet another disturbance to ride northeastward into the region during the next couple days. This, along with an inverted trough and developing low pressure area to the south, and approaching front from the west, will result in unsettled weather through Wednesday. High pressure will build in Thursday for a nice day. A fast-moving low pressure area and attendant cold front will sweep through the region Friday with some passing showers, followed by a fair and cool Saturday. The developing fast flow will result in a rapid warm up for Sunday, but probably with more in the way of clouds. It’s too early to tell if showers will accompany this warm up.

Detailed forecast for eastern MA, RI, and southern NH…

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Slight chance of light rain mainly southern MA and RI late. Lows 43-48. Wind variable to E under 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Periods of light rain mainly RI and southeastern MA. Highs 53-58. Wind E up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Temperatures steady 53-58. Wind shifting to S 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of late-day showers mainly west of the 95 belt. Highs 62-67. Wind S 10-20 MPH.

THURSDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 45. High 58.

FRIDAY: Variably cloudy. PM showers. Low 45. High 60.

SATURDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 35. High 55.

SUNDAY: Variably cloudy. Low 45. High 65.

  1. Thanks TK !

    October 2011 Columbus Day Weekend highs (at Logan) : 82F, 87F, 85F

This year…… 78F, 58F, 56F. The heat’s running a bit at this house tonight to remove the chill.

Well, of course, it doesnt infer how much cold and snow, but everything since September 1st has been very different from one year ago at the same time.

    1. I believe all the seasons from year to year are different from the one before. Tom you gave in with the heat my friend, will be hard to turn off.

      1. For sure John….It had that scent the heat has, for a few minutes, when its turned on for the first time in many months.

        1. Tom I like that first heat smell. It means winter is coming. We had the gas fireplace on for a bit. But I’m going to sit on the porch later too. Some might consider me certifiable. 😀

  2. The latest CPC has above normal temps for next week and a bit beyond…hopefully not for the rest of the month. I don’t mind a warm day here and there, but I much perfer mostly cool temps for this time of year.

  3. That almanac might get something right calling for mild temps for the middle of the month before a round of severe storms happens the 20th-23rd of the month and it chills down big time.

    1. Jimmy, I wouldn’t count on any severe storms this time of year, but I hope the almanac is right for the big time chill at the end of the month. 🙂

  4. This is the Farmers’ Almanac calling for severe storms the 20th-23rd of the month following a spell of mild weather. Behind those storms they are calling for widespread frosts and colder weather. The mild spell might happen but the severe storms I would not count on although rare for October you could get severe weather like back in October 1979 with an F4 tornado in Windsor Locks, CT.

  5. I’m starting to have my doubts about any long term cooling the rest of this month…

      1. A whole lot of “uphill flow”, i.e., southwesterly flow aloft, in the coming weeks with mean trough to our west.

  6. At this point I don’t care about cold for the season but really want to get rid of the mosquitoes

  7. Dylan Dreyer had her wedding over the weekend here in Boston and is currently on her honeymoon. I believe she will return to her gig on the Today Show next weekend. 🙂

Best of luck to Dylan and her new husband! 🙂

  8. Coastal temps didn’t fall much overnight because the winds were light east-northeast. Boston Harbor water temp : 58F.

      1. I heard this morning that one morning this weekend, I think sat would be real chilly. I believe he said Boston would even get down to 32. That was on fox25.

    1. I sure hope they are right!!

My business associate is up in North Conway for a meeting and said the colors are dull and disappointing. Coastal, I am not sure how recently you have been in that area. Perhaps he is past peak. I know when I was younger, Columbus Day weekend was close to peak but tended to be past.

      1. Well I didn’t mean he is past peak – I meant he is visiting past peak ……….. hmmmm the difference an omission of a few words can make!!!

        1. Yes, I believe they are past up there in Northern New Hampshire. I work near the Norwood Airport and the colors have gone from bright and brilliant last week to dull this week.

  9. Drove Rt 2 out to Amherst / Northampton yesterday. Color was maybe “half.” Didn’t see any trees really bright. Took MA Pike back to Boston color about the same.

    1. I read that there were some incredible backups on the MassPike, westbound, I believe on Friday Night, as the Holiday Weekend began.

        1. My oldest left here at 2:00 and took the pike to 495 where she said a parking lot had formed. Mac left Watertown at 400 and by then the backup was to the Watertown exit.

  10. I enjoyed the colors this past weekend. Visited a friend in Kinderhook, NY (close to the Massachusetts border). Sure, the colors were not as brilliant as they normally are, which probably has a lot to do with the dry spring and summer. But, the foliage was still nice. I’m not thrilled with this weather pattern, however. The grays have really taken over. Looks more like November than October.

  11. Teleconnections are starting to point to longer term warmth through the balance of October, and possibly beyond, with cold shots only able to last for brief times.

CPC’s most recent long range outlooks show above normal temps through the Fall, Winter, and for most of 2013, along with a drying trend after a wet start.

My friends at WSI are forecasting milder than normal temps for the balance of 2012 and I’m starting to find it difficult to argue with them.

    1. :)! It is has already been colder than last year, but if it is going to get milder than I am ok with that :).

      1. Don’t get me wrong, I like the snow but hate the cold. If we could have a somewhat mild winter with average snowfall that would be good. I just hate the frigid air and the wind that sometimes comes along with it! 🙂

  12. Don’t everybody buy into what the cpc is saying. Just chill out and wait. Every season is different including winter. I bet Judah Cohen says different.

      1. I could not agree with you more. I hate the cold and snow, everyone here knows that. I would welcome a repeat of last winter, that won’t happen anytime soon. I love the fact that nobody is paying attention to the possibility of the week el Nino. I am going high with snow like I have been saying. I will have bragging rights here come March.

          1. I think it is up in the air for now until there is more evidence one way or the other. We will see what the end of this month and the beginning of November bring right before we have to finalize our predictions :).

  13. Sadly if we have a repeat of last winter i think we are in serious trouble. The Sudbury river is still very low. The Lincoln reservoir is as well. We drove through concord and Lincoln yesterday and macs comment was that he hopes we get a bunch of snow. And he does not like snow. We need moisture

  14. I love every season for what it is. To me, a “perfect world” weather-wise would be a mild spring with plenty of sun but enough rain; a summer w/plenty of haze, heat and humidity but with some days of refreshing, cooler and drier air thrown in as well as plenty of thunderstorms – enough to be interesting but not damaging; a fall with crisp, sunny and cold days w/equal amounts of sun and some rainy, cool days thrown in; and a winter with normally cold days w/maybe 1 or 2 very cold days and average snowfall w/a blizzard thrown in as well as a brief “January thaw” like we used to have long ago. But alas, the world is not perfect – and it seems less perfect nowadays. I am just hoping we get more snowfall than last year. I guess we will know what the winter will be like come next April!
