Party After Dark

5:12PM

What’s already happened: More snow than expected due to slightly colder temperatures. The accumulation south of Boston Thursday morning was the biggest surprise to me. Persistent dry air has limited snowfall in much of RI. Otherwise the overall behavior of the storm has been as expected, with limited accumulation during the day and strong winds especially along the coast.

What’s still to come: The very large storm, centered far southeast of New England, covers such a large area that southeastern New England will remain under its influence through much of Friday. The peak of this storm will occur during tonight, when it will be cold enough in just about all the region for accumulating snow. Significant amounts will take place in some areas. Based on current trends, the expected ADDITIONAL snow (not including what has already fallen, including what melted off today) will be 2-5 inches from southern NH through much of eastern MA, but more variable amounts of 5-9 inches or even locally heavier are expected especially in higher elevations southwest of Boston to northern RI, then a drop-off in snow amounts as you progress eastward across Cape Cod to under 3 inches on the Outer Cape and Nantucket. Most of this will fall tonight, and as daylight returns Friday, the accumulation will shut off again even though some snow may continue well into the morning, ending as a mix or rain in parts of the region by early afternoon. Combined with snow that already fell, some areas especially south and southwest of Boston will have snowfall totals of 10+ inches, though with some melting of the initial accumulation having taken place, that amount of snow will never be on the ground.

Despite increased snow totals, the biggest story with the storm will still be the wind and coastal flooding. Scituate and Sandwich MA are the most vulnerable spots during high tides through Friday morning with moderate to possibly major flooding possible.Β  Elsewhere, mostly minor to moderate flooding is expected.

Despite the storm center being so far away, its large circulation combined with a channel of upper level energy moving along a trough that runs from near the Great Lakes toward the storm center, some of which passes over this area, enhancing the precipitation tonight. It should all wrap up and get out of here by later Friday as the storm and associated energy finally pulls away.

The weekend will feature fair weather but some clouds may linger Saturday due to a little disturbance aloft and a tilt of wind to northeast at the surface. More sun will dominate later Saturday and again early Sunday before some additional clouds return later Sunday. A warm front approaching Monday will bring clouds. A push of very mild air Tuesday will be followed by a cold front bringing rain showers, then a return to cooler but dry weather by the middle of next week.

Updated forecast for southeastern New England…

  1. Well it’s clear I underestimated greatly what was gonna fall esp south of Boston, I forecasted 1-3 w/2-4 north and west, hadi and os props to a closer forecast than mine this time though its not a competition but props anyways πŸ™‚ I think the losers or over forecasted areas will be west of Boston 495 west, bullseye Attleboro to Taunton where possibly a foot can fall, hope everyone has a snowy night before the warm up πŸ™‚

  2. I’m reposting this from the old blog. Thanks TK. Just got home from school a little while ago. Rainshine, the science club LOVED your satellite picture of the storm. So, I walked in this morning and there was about an inch of snow on the ground; wind was in my face and the main roads were slushy and the side streets lightly snow covered. I walked home this afternoon in light snow and there was about an inch of snow on the ground except for one short street that had more like 2 inches; don’t know what was with that. The main roads are clear, with a little slush at the edges and the side streets are a little more snow covered. So, I thought I’d go look at the bird bath out back and it has about an inch of snow on it. Much less wind this afternoon too (of course I was going in the opposite direction). OK, let me get some peanut butter and chocolate.

    1. Deb, glad the science club enjoyed the satellite loop! Thanks! And glad you got home safely and enjoy your peanut butter and chocolate! πŸ™‚

  3. northeast wind i think is starting to form a dry slot over northeast massachusetts which i think might cut accumulations down?

    1. Looking at that dry slot now and trying to see if it holds for a while or gets overwhelmed by the enhanced stuff coming in from the east in a while…

The mesoscale and microscale aspects of this giant storm are fascinating.

        1. Also, the RI dry slot is impressive. It’s been holding it’s ground for hours upon hours. I doubt northern RI sees the high totals that is being forecasted. I wouldn’t be surprised if parts of the Cape received more snow than RI.

        1. if you look at the dry slot of northeast mass and the one over RI they look like they are tring to connect.

  4. 4″ total so far including last night. At home now and not much if any of it melted during the day as opposed to where I work in Worcester about 350′ lower and only 5 miles away.

  5. Thanks Tk. In the longwood medical area of Boston. Feels like it got warmer out. Were just here waiting as nothing sticking. Pete just said 1-3 do you agree for here. When should it pick up.

    1. I can see the 1-3 if you are talking about what will be on the ground after the nighttime push. I put out the amounts I did but there will still be some variability as there already has been.

      1. Yes Im trying to find out if its 1-3 tonight total. nothing on ground here at all now. Minor slush at 7am this morning. We got everthing lined up ready to go just waiting. So 1-3 sounds good for this area. I was hearing like 8-10 from an unknown source.

  6. Vicki – unfortunately, I did not see any snowflakes or snowmen. I think it’s because I have an older computer. It’s a desktop. One of these days, I’ll get an updated computer!

    1. And all I can make are πŸ™‚ or :).

Tried at one time to make them blink and make funny faces but computer couldn’t do it. Oh, well. I’ll have to ask Santa Claus for a new computer and weather station nxt. Christmas! πŸ™‚

      1. I for one like your smilies. And I hope the Easter bunny brings you a computer. But if not Santa πŸ™‚

        1. The Easter Bunny always brings me dark chocolate and marshmallow candy – my favorite! πŸ™‚

  7. DC really got busted yesterday similar to what happened to us back in Feb. 2010. IIRC Gov. Patrick practically shut down the state short of a driving ban with all schools closed and many businesses closed on their own not to mention many mayors including Boston imposing parking bans in anticipating lots of snow that never came.

I also remember Todd who was on mornings at the time, getting hammered by the WBZ trolls. It was IMO the beginning of the end of that weather blog…one of its many lowest points to come. Also IIRC Terry had to step in and post some warnings to calm things down…absolutely SHAMEFUL to say the least. πŸ™

Thanks TK for creating this “troll free” blog! πŸ˜€

    1. I’m happy to host it. And you people even come back when I blow the forecast. πŸ™‚

  8. I am in complete and utter shock right now. I concede to snow camp. But, I am keeping my marshmallows. The only consolation is that I get to christen my new snowblower aka SNOWBEAST.

  9. Okay, I’m over my shock now. I went to Lynn Shore Drive and Marblehead Light yo watch the angry surf. AMAZING! High tide isn’t until 730 pm. My assumption is that MSP and DCR will close down Lynn Shore Drive to cars during high tide. Nothing is as humbling as witnessing firsthand the fury of Mother Nature.

  10. 2 hr delay in Marshfield tomorrow, probably to wait out that 8am tide. Many roads the busses usually go down probably wont be passable for an hour either side of the high tide.

  11. i really wanted to go to the coast to see some of the surf expecially along the rocky shoreline of the northshore/ cape ann

    1. Actually, maybe 3 more, which would be the most we’ve had on the ground all storm.

  12. Ughh there is a good dry slot over northeast mass. Right over my town,.it.seems like merrimack valley always dodges the bullet

    1. merrimack valley= storm killer sadly the disadvantage of having slightly higher elevation

      1. I know matt, it is soo irritating, literally every badn that tries to.come reading always backs off or.slides south of.me. It really sucks, its only flurries here, but u go down 5.miles south towards even malden.its snowing.good, you must be also affected by this dry slot.since ur from billerica

        1. i think its do to the hills of middlesex. billerica included the hills are just high enought to get the bit stronger of a wind and it pushes it south and east.

  13. Hey Tom…I noticed this morning’s school cancellations were mostly from “Regional Districts” as opposed to towns or cities. What is the difference?

According to the BPS website, Boston has used 3 snow days so far and the school year ends on June 27th.

    1. A regional district is when anywhere from two to several towns are governed by a single regional school committee, central office etc. Towns may or may not have their own schools but they don’t have separate governance.

  14. Some weather forecasts are for 50’s this wknd. and early nxt. wk. but getting colder later nxt. wk.? I was hoping colder weather would go away until nxt. fall! Oh, well. It’s still only March. I’m guessing this won’t be the last snowstorm of the winter. At least we’ll get some minor snowfalls. But I hope I am wrong. Have a good night all – will be shutting down computer soon as my husband and me are going to play a game of Bostonopoly.

  15. With today’s snowfall of 1.0″ Logan officially has 43.8″…which is exactly normal for a typical winter. πŸ™‚

  16. i think channel 5 has the amounts down for this system if we had no dry slots northeast mass would be in the 6+ as well

  17. Heavy precip falling in Marshfield. About .2 of a mile west on Rte 139, its all snow, the ground is covered and there’s a bit of slush on some pavements.

Here, its nearly all snow but still a bit of rain mixed in. Very, very strong wind.

  18. Well Lisa I conceded to bust camp and its not a smokescreen. Our cars are not even covered. This is plain and simple zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…..oh sorry dozed off. I have firewood and marshmallows and wine and beer

    1. That surprises me. The radar has shown a moderate band of snow over Framingham for a while now with more heavy bands heading your way shortly.

    2. I am so confused at this point, I don’t know who or what to believe when it comes to the forecast. We have about 3 inches of wet snow on the ground here. The roads are bare. I looked at snow maps this evening that forecasted another 3-6, 4-8 and 5-10 inches in addition to wht has already fallen in my area onthe coast. The forecast has gone from nothing on the coast to almost a foot depending on the forecast. I feel like the forecasts are completely out of control and very confusing to the general public.

      #tiredFrustratedAggravated

      1. the local METS are as confused as we are. Some METS are putting up snow maps that show total snowfall while other mets are snowing maps that demonstrate new snowfall. Meanwhile, ch7 has a 10-14 bullseyes (total snow) for northern RI. Meanwhile, I have been working in northern RI all day. It hasn’t even accumulated one inch so not sure how RI gets 10-14. Additionally, the avg model still puts out an additional 1 inch of QPF for most of the area east of worcester. Even with snow ratios of 8:1 (and I think it will be higher than that), one would expect an additional 8 inches on top of what we already saw this afternoon. The entire situation is very confusing but the storm has been very tricky to forecast to say the least. No one really knows what will fall or not fall from the sky. We’ll have to wait to see what falls when we wake up tomorrow morning.

  19. Harvey ha 6-12″+ say worcester area. and areas to the south will be the jack pot. Does anybody still think worcester are will be the jack pot.

      1. I’m with you Vicki! Although my area of Norwood/Westwood is getting pounded.

There is too much dry air in Worcester to overcome. They will get accumulating snow but not like eastern MA and especially the south shore.

        1. No tom. I think I did so many non snow dances for your area that it spread to me. As long as you guys don’t get it I don’t mind one but

  20. I’m not sure how Ch7 is forecasting 10-14 inches through northern RI. They haven’t even received an inch of snow yet and still remain in the dry slot. Does anyone pay attention to current obs???!!!!

  21. Meanwhile I’m dealing with a real ice issue — namely the Bruins. They have been a defensive mess the last 2 games and I am sorry to say, idiots in the neutral zone. If they lose again, I’m going fall on my sword. And they have a tough schedule coming up! (TK, sorry for the sports digression.)

    1. They’ll be fine !! I think they have 2 or 3 games in hand on most teams and are only a pt or 2 behind.

Lots of talent, very good coach, with a good, successful system of defensive hockey.

I think they’ll be quite alright. Even the best teams in all sports have a rough patch in a season.

  22. I don’t know if Worcester will be the jackpot cat966g but we’ll do ok. I’m just NW of the city and I’ve measured 5.5″ so far including last night.

  23. Woburn: Been snowing now since sometime last night, probably recorded a total of around 3 inches so far, but we have never had more than 1/2 inch on the ground at any time. Sun’s been down for 90 min and we’re not really accumulating at all at the moment.

    1. WeatherWiz .. not sure if you saw my answer above. I figure maybe 3 more. So 3 twice, 6ish for a total, yet we’ll probably never have more than 2 1/2 on the ground at any time for this entire event. I may have underestimated the totals, but I did not underestimate the difficulty of holding accumulation.

      1. Yeah I saw that, thanks. Always appreciate your input! Wonder if they will even cancel school.

        1. At most, a delay.

Other than blowing the forecast on that stuff this morning south of Boston, I’m actually not feeling that bad about my overall idea on this thing… Let’s see if any surprises are in store (dry slots to heavy banding) as the night goes on.

      2. To emphasize your point TK, it stayed just cold enough here all day for this to actually look like a decent snow. So critical this time of year and a good lesson learned.

Because it stayed relatively cold, snow started to stick immediately at sunset and it’s 29.3 now so it’s adding up at a light to moderate pace at the moment

  24. Back to a mix in North Plymouth and very strong winds. Took a ride to Plymouth beach and the splash over was crazy!

      1. Great picture. Looks as if the comma head/trowal dries up before pushing inland from the Atlantic. I believe that is the reason for significantly reduced snowfall rates. If we were able to get into that comma head, some of these high snowfall totals would have easily been verified. Could be a bust!

    1. Arod whats the deal with boston. Harvey has 10 for the city. still not sticking. Could a dryslot set up in the city or its just a matter of time for the show. snowing very light and not windy.

      1. John, Boston does not see 10 inches of additional snow. Three at the most and even that is pushing it. Too much dry air overwhelming the upper levels to support much in the way of heavy snow and with an unfrozen ground, it will be difficult to stick without sufficient lift, heavy precip and colder surface temps. I’m thinking 2-4 inches for Boston tonight max! Certainly not 10 inches.

        1. Oh I agree, I think Harvey is way to high with this storm. My question is arod is it possible that this dry slot if you will, just shut everthing off for good. Just trying to figure things out here with the crew.

          1. No. While there is a lot of dry air, I do not feel it will be an area wide dry slotting. There will be bands of snow that still pivot into our area of varying intensity. It may come down heavy for a short time while at other times it may not be doing much at all. I think that Boston north and west sees 2-4 additional with 3-6+ confined to south, southwest and southeast of Boston with the exception of the immediate coast line and parts of outer Cape.

  25. I wonder whats going on in SE Mass just west of Rte. 3……. Pembroke, Hanover….that general area……

34, 35F at my house, so, its an extremely wet snow thats not sticking. But the precip is heavy, as it is inland a ways from me.

Perhaps that area listed above will be tonight’s jackpot.

Winds very strong, its just a continuous background sound even above the normal sound of the TV.

    1. Tom, my wife is saying it is snowing at a good clip at home and not that windy. Hows that end of town.

      1. Big snow flakes, sloppy, extremely windy. Heard on WATD with the higher astronomical tide tomorrow morning that they will be closing off access to Brant Rock. They are expecting somewhere btwn moderate-major coastal flooding and our schools have a 2 hr delay so that the busses can travel the shore roads once the 8am tide recedes.

        1. Yes for sure brantrock will have problems. Better to have a delay tomorrow than a missed day. I think some dry air is in Boston right now, makes for a longer night waiting for this thing. Stay safe

        2. Smart to delay and not miss. Happy for you Tom. My guess is Humarock will be bad again as well as Brant rock. I’m so sorry this is happening

          1. Vicki, I certainly didnt want you to lose your month stay down here during March, but given this event and the request to evacuate Humarock and Brant Rock near multiple high tides, perhaps not having to deal with this storm was at least one slight positive part.

  26. the heavy stuff has remained south of Boston since last night and I feel given current trends that the heavy stuff will remain well of Boston sparing most of us from reaching warning criteria snowfall tonight.

    1. Well, if its wanting snow, the dry slots stink !! But, from a convenience point of view, its good. Put 4 or a little more inches of wet snow on the trees and the misery begins.

I’m just hoping this 34F or 35F air right near the ocean continues overnight as I think it may be just mild enough to prevent accumulation from occuring on our trees. It looks like my area is in the heavy precip for a while, so, here’s hoping !

  27. Snow in Easton has significantly reduced in intensity. Since 4pm when I got home from work, less than an inch. It sure is windy though

    1. That’s where it is. The South Shore from where you are southward. We are struggling to put new snow on the ground up here in the NW suburbs.

      1. John I actually think the dry slot just offshore will shut the snow off almost completely in the city for a little while around 8PM. Let me know what you see.

  28. Even when the “dark green” area passed me on radar, the snow barely picked up for 5 min then slackened off. Anemia invading this thing.

  29. Unbelievable how elevation can make a difference. Where I work there may be 2 or 3″. Then I go to my fathers house in the same town on top of a hill. Totally different world a good 5″

  30. Dry air eating away at the storm north of Springfield and another good dry slot coming ashore on the North Shore, about to make my snow here even lighter. If you want snow, the South Shore is the place to be…

    1. The guys at work want the defination of a dryslot. they want to know how it will affect us here in boston tonight. The report was very light snow and nothing sticking. Ill wait for your reply.

  31. Just came from Quincy to North Attleboro on 95. 128 and 95 all down to bare pavement and even the town roads here too. Probably have 3 inches max. Temp of 30.

  32. I had a friend say that Squantum was raining today which is a part of Quincy next to the coast and at my house a mile inland it has been snowing since 3am this morning. Total we got about 4″ and still counting.

        1. Its early in the night, there’s plenty of Atlantic moisture to come, a disturbance coming in from the west…… I wouldnt write your area off yet.

  33. Dont know if its a trend, but a secondary band of heavier looking precip seems to be forming in central Mass, out by Worcester.

    1. As is the snow down in CT and Long Island. Must be the effects of this disturbance/energy moving in.

      1. Waiting to see if a heavy band of snow forms where I am in CT. So far this storm has behaved here. Roads still wet
for the most part but slush is starting to form. The snow clinging to the trees and power lines. I am glad the winds
are not gusting with this type of snow.

  34. Godness the northshore is getting HAMMERED!.. With a dry slot that is. Here in reading, wr barely have an inch, this.storm.is a huge bust.for.northshore, looks like banding.forms in central mass, skips northshore.of course just to.piss me.off :). But then.i.look at.the dry slot in RI then i kinda feel better lol

    1. And yet in Lynn, the gateway to the North Shore, we are getting hammered with SNOW. It is an absolute mess right now.

  35. Very strange here in East Bridgewater, been snowing moderately since dark and accumulating but only a couple inches. It’s like the roads/ surface temp is warm enough to melt it but not as fast as its coming down. I feel like if it lightened up it would all melt away in time. Temp is 33.

  36. For six inches to verify where I am in methuen, it’s going to have to get cranking pretty quick

  37. how i hate the 495 belt. it seems like the snow is heivier just outside of 495 πŸ™

  38. My family is telling me around 2 inches but my electronic snow capturer says 2.8 inches in north attleboro

  39. Wow. We are getting there. The blacktop on the driveway is 75% covered. πŸ˜€ of course the roads are bare

  40. I think precip becomes more scattered after 10 or 11pm, alot of dry pockets moving in from the east, worst of the storm is over by midnight snow wise, there will be some people that r like what snowstorm and 2 towns over there will be people saying what a storm! All depends where u live

  41. John. A dry slot is really just when dry air is sucked into the circulation of a cyclone. It can happen on many scales. If you look at a satellite loop of this storm it’s a very powerful storm but the rapid spin has managed to pull in dry air from great distances and wrap it into the circulation. A whole bunch of this dry air has collected around the filling low pressure area. The configuration of the overall storm circulation, being very large, is pulling pieces of this dry air northwestward then westward and spinning it back to the areas mostly north of Boston.

    1. We did. Do you think this stays and hangs out, say for the night or should lift. Its all but stopped here now. When I was explaining the dryslot thay had never heard of it. Feel lucky to have this blog. Thank you.

      1. It won’t stay stopped all night, but I wonder just how much they will end up with. I’ve noticed that the cloud base is rather high out here NW of the city which indicates lots of low level drying to me. The storm is trying to send moisture in but will it be enough to re-saturate the lower levels? I think it will happen partially but not sure the entire Boston area gets going with snow really well for any length of time, at least during the next several hours.

        1. Tk I was just out walking around and It does not feel that cold out and the wind, what wind.

  42. Not to fast forward but make sure you get out and enjoy the snow bc Beyond sat temps are gonna be around 50 degrees and showers Wed,

    1. Mostly I have totally enjoyed yet again the knowledge that goes into figuring all of this out – not to mention the patience. As I said earlier, each storm seems to want to outdo the last as far as making it nearly impossible to figure out. Proving once again that New England is as good as it gets.

      1. It gets a little frustrating, but in a fun kind of way. I really love the challenge.

  43. TK forgot to mention Baileyman was looking for you on the BZ blog today. Was reading Melissa’s blog and noticed it on the bottom.

    1. I heard about that. BM has been invited to this blog in the past but, unless he has appeared here under another name or has been reading only, I am not quite sure he’s made it here.

      1. Tk. If I remember there was lots of BM impostures over there. Use caution as I know you will. I can’t remember last time I was over there.

        1. The crew keeps saying 2am is when the heavy sticking snow starts, what do you think. Im not sold.

  44. Not sure where he NWS is getting some of these snowfall totals. They have North Attleboro at 6????? Not at my house, lucky if I have 3.

    1. Don’t forget that a good amount of snow that fell has melted during the day today.

    2. A lot has compacted. I was thinking the same thing when i saw the amounts from Mansfield and Foxboro. There’s no way.

  45. Some of the observed melted precip totals, particularly in SE Mass, are nearing 1 inch.

Most of that has fallen as snow. Perhaps the models are not equipped to factor in the time of year, solar insolation, borderline temps. And so, the model offers 1 inch QPF and has it cold enough to snow and it paints a 10-12 inch bullseye. Then, of course, that 1 inch melted precip only results in 3 inches of wet snow and some wonder, a busted snowfall forecast….

I would respectedly submit that this is not a busted snowfall prediction if the time of year, solar insolation and borderline temps are taken into account. By and large, we’re getting the precip amts. 5F colder and SE Mass is already under a foot of snow and areas with lighter precip probably have 3-6 inches on the ground.

So, I dont feel like its a storm thats underperforming by any means.

    1. I think too, we’re not used to seeing long duration events like this. We have been used to fairly quick but intense systems deliver a wall of snow then its done. This has been a drawn out process with primarily light to moderate snowfall into borderline temps and mild ground.

      1. Very true…..

Next band coming in just north of Cape Cod with green echoes, looking stronger on radar as it gets closer and closer.

  46. Still amazed watching the radar loop. It refuses to snow in RI. Every time a heavier band tries to get in there it just goes “poof”.

    1. My wife just came from work from Brockton. Once she got to Mansfield the roads were fine- snow let up. Brockton is on a bit of a hill. You take a look at the radar and there is a litttle darker blue in Brockton. It hits a wall as you say and the hill in Brockton has just enough lift

  47. Man, that radar is HURTIN’. Looks like some more stuff might be coming from the east. The band in Worcester did well. Up to 7″ here. (3″ in last four hours)

  48. We have just been parked under a heavy band of snow in east/ central CT since about 4:30. It has been snowing unabated moderately and at times heavy during that period. We have 4 inches on the ground so far.

    1. Yeah, seems like we have been in the right place at the right time this winter! It’s no 5″ per hour like we saw in the blizzard but I was not expecting to get into an extended period of inch per hour snows tonight. Nice surprise.

      1. Mark I am waiting to see if I will get into a heavy band of snow over here. The roads are slushy and unless it picks up
here overnight were going to be on the lower end of that 3-6 inches in this part of CT.

  49. TK…Why is western Franklin, Hampshire and Hampden Counties under a WSW while the eastern sections of those counties and Berkshire are under a WWA?

Just curious more than anything else.

  50. For the first six of the month at Logan the high was 41, 42 or 43 and the average 5 out of those 6 days was 38 for the high and low. Looks like that will not be the case today.

  51. I’m here. Wife and I were out shopping. Drove to Canton. Was snowing wildly out there. Good 6-7 inches. Got home at 9:30 PM. Measured 4 inches on the ground here. Not much melted during the day, maybe just a little. Car thermometer was reading 30. RT 95 North from Canton to Dedham/Westwood was completely snow covered and very slippery.

Snowing good here, but not outrageous. Vis something like 3/4 to 1 mile or so.

Here is the 0Z NAM total qpf from 7PM onward tonight:

    http://mag.ncep.noaa.gov/Image.php?model=nam&area=namer&param=precip_ptot&cycle=00&image=nam%2F00%2Fnam_namer_036_precip_ptot.gif#

Still close to 1.5 inches right near the coast.

Here is the snow map: (7PM on. Does not include what fell prior to 7PM)

    COWABONGA!!!! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

      1. The question for me is that at 10 in the morning, how much of that snow falling is actually going to be able to stick?

        1. I have been out, i just wasn’t sure if the sun angle would overcome the previously fallen snow. And wow that radar composite is quite impressive….I hope this equates to a 2 hour delay for school tomorrow…

        2. I saw that O.S.

The NAM just doesn’t want to give up.

Just reached 8″ here and under a nice solid band again. Maybe a bust for me on what I thought was a good call? I’m happy to bust on the good side of things.

Those pulses near the Taunton are are just relentless. Can you imagine if it were January.

            1. Even the GFS is about 1/2 the NAM, still gives us a decent hit overnight into tomorrow AM. πŸ˜€

              1. yeah it does. There’s already a fair amount of drifting in my driveway. I was hoping to just be able to mash it down for the big melt coming up but I think that’s out the window now.

                1. Really looks like Winter out there. This storm acted very strangely, but I’ll take it. Can’t wait to see what’s happening in the AM! πŸ˜€

    1. What a slow storm. I felt like I was watching that old school version of “The Time Machine” with those rapid and multiple sun rises and sets.

  52. You know, right now, I wish we have buoy radars and/or ship on board radars
contributing to our displays so we can see what is out there!!! πŸ˜€

      1. I don’t disagree that it’s coming this way and will get in – can’t argue facts. But I’m not convinced it delivers that much snow between 1AM & 7AM when the peak will be.

    1. Don’t know what Harvey indicated, but Todd pretty much took the GFS snow
map and presented it. πŸ˜€ Close anyway. He said 4-6 inches overnight.

  53. Just continuing to get pummeled by heavy snow bands here in Coventry, Ct. It’s really coming down again and hasn’t let up much at all since 4:30 – we’ve got about 5″ now on the ground.

    1. The NBC and CBS mets just upped tonights snow totals for my area in north central/northeast Ct to 6-9″ and 8″+ respectively. Would not at all be surprised to end up with 8″ or more here if this rate continues for several more hours. This is far more than I expected here. It’s all about where the good banding sets up!

    2. Impressive.. Contrast that with much of RI and you have a great picture of the variability across a relatively small area.

  54. As of midnight we still have less than 1 inch on the ground in Woburn and the dry slot has been trying to hang on. It’s redeveloping and I’m watching the green areas on the radar diminish as they come over me.

  55. Just drove from back bay to JP and a huge difference in snow. Pulled into my driveway and easily 6 inches vs. 3 in back bay if that. Snowing heavily right now. Off to bed early morning after a night of way too much fun πŸ™‚

    1. If you had drive up here you’d have said “storm? what storm?” we have just about NOTHING and the main roads are wet only…

      1. Hey tk i was actually just in woburn, playing indoor soccer at thr center, and trust me when i drove back to reading, it seems as if the snow lit up, i cant believe parts.of ct got an inch like waterbury while we didnt, what a bust.for us! I am the radar.now there r green colors coming.over, and hopefully they dont.dissapear

        1. Finally was able to get some decent snow off the ocean after midnight. Dumped about 2 inches in 2 hours in Woburn for a total of about 5 for the storm so far. Still snowing and accumulating but the rate has gone down a little. I figure another inch or so most areas north of Boston (maybe a heavier burst here and there), and another 1-3 elsewhere atop what has already fallen. Things wind down NE to SW in the late morning or midday possibly as a mix/rain as the atmosphere warms at the end of the precip.

  56. 7″ and still snowing moderately in Coventry, ct. Stafford, Tolland, and Manchester coming in with similar totals in northern CT and still several more hours of snow to go. Not sure why the NWS hasn’t upgraded Hartford, Tolland, and Windham counties to a winter storm warning. Conversely, that snow hole of RI should be downgraded! Pretty amazing how that dry slot has just parked itself there the entire day.

    1. They finally got some moderate into the hills in the far N of RI but central/southern areas still pretty much snow-free.

  57. A lot has changed since 10pm……..when it wasnt all fully 100% snow in eastern Marshfield.

I’m guessing about 3 inches of heavy, wet snow and the trees are all coated. It continues to snow moderately.

I’ve got to think a few miles west, there’s double what we have.

    1. Based on the radar returns and guessing solar brightness effects kick in around 9am ??, I’d think another 2-3 inches of waterlogged snow is likely.

12 days to astronomical spring. Its been a wonderful first 7 days of meteorological spring. πŸ™‚ πŸ™ πŸ™‚

            1. I drove over the snow bank left by the plows and right into a 3″ think birch tree that is leaning over Broadway. I couldn’t see it.

  58. TV mets reporting 2-4″ more before storm clears out late am. Sandwich getting hit again with tides and flooding. Nantuckett to get hit at high tide too.

    1. The tidal guage at Nantucket is showing a +3.1 ft storm surge, same in Chatham. Boston Harbor at +2 ft with the wind a bit more parallel to the shore.

On this N wind, the water us going to get piled up into Cape Cod Bay. The live shots from Sandwich could be jaw dropping from 7-9 am.

  59. The north shore, into Boston and the south shore are sitting under a precip plume right now. Harvey’s coastal numbers by 9am, may verify as well.

  60. Wow, dark greens now, all of 128 belt, even out to 495. Going to pile it up quickly over next 1-3 hrs.

    1. I’ve been under a “dark green” blob for a while and nothing but wispy snow…TK pointed this out last night too. Deceptive.

  61. Wow – what a great storm this is turning out to be. 13″ here two-day total. Since none of it really melted yesterday, it looks it too. By looking at that radar 18″ might be in play.

  62. With daylight showing up, its pretty intense out there. Visibilities near 1/4 mile, extremely windy, mod-heavy snow, some of its even blowing around …… Craziness !!

    1. I’ve been thinking about 9am, given the heavy intensity and the low sun angle for a few hrs after sunrise.

      1. Whats Really annoying.is.my town is 33, while all towns around me are 29, i live in reading and its supposely 33, while boston has 28, i.dont know why only reading has 33 while.wilmington, woburn, and even north reading.has upper 20’s. Could it be an error? Its not like i.have east winds! Here check it.out yourelf. http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=42.52120560764625&lon=-71.08772277832031. It should say 33 but if u.click on woburn and.wilmington and surronding areas its.colderr? Its funny even if.u click on the.other side of my.town on the map its also.colder, lol.looks.like its always my house that gets warmed

  63. Snowy and windy here in Quincy. We have about 8″ plus!! Not a bad storm. Radar echoes looks pretty impressive coming off the ocean hoping to hit at least 10″ before it gets to bright out. Quincy closed schools today as well.

  64. Its interesting, many of the south shore towns have two hour delays and believe me, I want to get today in.

However, it really is blizzard like out there and based on the radar, I dont think this is going to let up anytime soon.

I wonder if there could be a reevaluation at 8am because, I think its going to be going strong then too and I cant imagine the roads are going to be in great shape even by 9am.

This is evolving into a pounding.

    1. And as I say that, Marshfield changes from a 2 hr delay to closed.

Well, for me, its safety first. I appreciate this decision. Rather give up some vacation time, if it comes to that and have everyone be safe !!

  65. Be careful to anyone who has to travel this morning. You could tell its a wet snow with everything clinging to the trees.
Quite a range of snow here in CT with as a little as an inch or two to a foot in Staffordville which is a hill town northeast of Hartford. It was a matter of elevation and where the heavy bands of snow setup.

  66. Good morning. I have had my first helping of crow. Yummmmm. Did anyone else notice it snowed. For one I am thrilled that it went the way the mets forecast. PB just dissed the GFS

  67. Wow just dumping here in JP. Easily 1 inch per hour if not 1.5. Have not gotten to measure but eye ball is about 8-10. What you think OS.

    1. What is the city of Boston doing in regards to school ? I cant imagine the busses are going to have a chance with this snowfall amt and rate ?

      1. Wow just saw boston didn’t close. Framingham waited until literally the last second. Do u have to go April vaca now Tom?

    2. Nice Hadi. Looks like my bust was not calling for enough! Higher ratio out here is piling it up fast.

  68. Its about 29 degrees here and fluffy snow after a good amount of heavy wet snow. Its pouring snow here..

  69. just now

    Harvey Leonard ‏@HarveyWCVB

Height of the storm in terms of snow is happening now and continues a few more hours

  70. Route 3 was horrific this morning. Plows on the south bound side and it appears they haven;t touched the north bound side yet. Drove from Hanover to Norwood completely white knuckled. I was thinking the same thing about the snow not accumulating after the sun has risen. But I am kind of thinking that if it comes down hard enough on surfaces that already are snow covered, that I should not be a problem to add up little but more.

Hanover was getting nailed when I left. Less than a inch on my driveway when I went to bed at 11. Now at 4am we had 6.5″in 5 hours.

Don’t travel if you don’t have too.

  71. latest from barry

    Barry Burbank ‏@BarryWBZ

Another 2-4″ before snow tapers off later this morning from north to south across the are

This I believe would put me at 12″ plus SWEET!!

  72. I am truly shocked at BPS. Side roads are brutal.

Thanks, OS and I just called the way we saw it happening.

  73. Tomorrow I will be in Hilton Head for the week! Perfect time to escape after my biggest blown forecast in 2 years….got the jackpot north of Worcester right and most accumulations would come from the trough rotating through. Outside of that blew the coastal accumulations and the daytime accumulations along 495/95 interchange area.

Can’t wait to hear from all the arm chair Mets who nailed this from days out!

Anyway at my house in Franklin there is about 5″ on the ground, but I am not there so can’t tell you what the melted QPF total.

I am at my place in Amherst. A morning of teaching and i am out of here for a week plus. We got only about 1.5″ on the ground and LE of about 0.6 since 6am yesterday. Not even a delay for Amherst, Hadley, Northampton, Greenfield schools today. What a difference!

Later all. Be back in a week after licking my wounds!

    1. Licking wounds not allowed πŸ˜‰ Actually wounds are not allowed. You do great. It is a pleasure to have you here. Everyone looks forward to your forecasts AND the accompanying explanations. I learned so much from this storm. Enjoy Hilton Head. One of my favorite areas of the country.

    2. JMA you do a great job and we appreciate your forecasting and explanations. This one had a lot of curveballs. Enjoy Hilton Head.

  74. With the snow coming down the way it is how could any supertientendant not call school off??? I hope those who have school get their safely.

  75. Sorry for asking again. Daughters ultrasound is at newton wellesley at 1:00. Does everyone think the roads will still be bad. Missing the ultrasound is preferable to risking an accident especially since the seat belt sits right over the baby

      1. Vicki, still home. Surgery is scheduled for 11, but need to be at St Elizabeth’s at 10am. Hopefully the snow will have let up by then!

    1. Vicki,

Honestly, I’d be concerned. You’ll have to use the eyeball test as the
time gets closer. Also, check those radars.

      1. Thanks OS. If you guys don’t mind ill probably ask for input later too since you read radars better than I. They are playing it by ear which is wise

      1. Agreed! I was outside walking the dogs and almost fell over. I can’t believe they would force kids out.

        1. I wouldn’t either. Risking any child’s safety to keep from canceling one more day is inexcusable.

  76. WOW!!!! That’s all I can say. IMPRESSIVE out there.

    Here is the radar.

    http://radar.weather.gov/Conus/northeast_loop.php

Snow is Moderate to Heavy here. Vis under 1/2 mile.

Doesn’t look like it wants to stop anytime soon to me.

    We’ll see.

I agree with Retrac. Looks like the NAM did very very well with this one. πŸ˜€

I can’t believe BPS has school. They are nuts. I think we are going to hear some
    horror stories today.

I still can’t believe my office is open. We have been closed for lesser storms.
    πŸ˜€

    1. I can’t believe my husband went to work. He could have stayed home and worked. Smart man snuck out while I was sleeping. You’d think after 34 years he’d remember I’ll be awake when he returns ——-

    1. Hadi, at least 8 inches, could be 10 or even close to a foot on the grass.

I have the yardstick in my trunk for handy measurements when needed.

      πŸ˜€

  77. With regards to Boston, it could be that since they get St. Patrick’s Day off and Bunker Hill day off (in mid June), they dont start til after Labor Day and with a few days off already, I can see why from a date perspective, they havent closed today. In terms of safety, I think a very, very poor decision.

    1. Very Poor decision!!! I really can’t fathom it at all.

I don’t know who they were listening too, but they CLEARLY got bad
      advice.

    1. Whose got the highest snow total for Logan on the blog ? They are not going to be far off.

Long term, if the NAO stays relatively negative, we are susceptible to snow events well into March/early April ….. If the moisture and the relative chill can combine yet again.

      1. Unfortunately, I had 6 inches for Logan. I think they come in
        at closer to 10. πŸ˜€

          1. Oh, you know I figured that out on the way to work.

Btw, I had 60 inches for the season. Getting there.
            πŸ˜€

  78. I can’t believe the snow that’s getting thrown back in here. I feel like it’ll never stop. Just shoveled and it’s definitely wet & heavy.

  79. BAM – 15″ and pouring snow.

(again, two-day so you guys don’t think I don’t know how to measure snow) πŸ™‚

NWS only has 8hr. totals up as of now.

  80. Plymouth schools followed Marshfield and switched from a delay to being closed. Now the scramble to figure out daycare since I have some big meetings at work today.

    1. I made about 10 measurements. I got a consistent 10 inches even at
7:30 AM. You must have had some up slope enhancement from
      Peter’s Hill. πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

  81. Boston had 2.6 yesterday, so seasonal total is up to 45.4 not including the snow since midnight.

  82. This has to be the last wintery event, doesnt it ? (nervous face, here)

However, with the various atmospheric teleconnections long range outlook, I wont be surprised by more cold precip events over the next few weeks.

  83. Well, I did call for at least one more plowable before winter was done. πŸ˜€

  84. I only blended 20% of the NAM into my call. One thing about it is it was consistent with its qpf versus a crazy run then backing off by 50%. Should have paid better attention to that.

  85. Can’t wait to see where Logan ends up. I think it’ll get the total real close to my call for the season. There’s a few of us bunched up in that mid 40’s range.

  86. Sorry, I have to say it again – I CAN’T BELIEVE KIDS IN BOSTON ARE GOING TO SCHOOL. It is SO awful out here in the south end. All out blizzard.

  87. Kane,

    I’m in Quincy.

Anyone watching wbz? They have live pictures in marshfield ton of water coming over barriers.

  88. I have found one can almost use the obs to guestimate Logan’s snowfall.

Based on its obs, its classifications of snow (light, mod, heavy) and its visibilities the last many hours and given that it had 2.6 at midnight, I’d estimate Logan to be at a total of 6 inches so far. (or another 3-4 since the 2.6 at midnight)

If the S or S+ continues for a couple more hours, it seems to me Logan could end up with 9-10 inches total.

  91. If.only it was snowing this hard last night in.northshore, we would have.gotten.over a foot of snow!

  92. Cheryl Gouthro ‏@CherylGouthro

@MattNoyesNECN. Ocean is flooding the streets in humarock. River has breached. Flooding will be bad.

  93. Wow, closing in on a foot of snow and still snowing heavy in Coventry, ct! NAM nailed it again here. NWS finally upgraded us to a WSW around 4 AM but their forecast still only calls for a total of 4-8″ here. LOL. All schools closed in our area.

  94. New bands reloading and forming just north of Provincetown. With this intensity, probably can delay the effect of the March solar insolation until very late morning, perhaps the 11am to noon hr.

  95. Amazing how that snow hole over RI has remained largely unmoved for pretty much the entire duration of this storm!

  96. We have 10 inches of a snow that is between fluffy and wet – kind of weird. Feels grainy. Temp is 28 degrees and wind is relatively light at the moment out of NE. It is snowing moderately.

  97. Mark you are in the bullseye up in that part of CT with the biggest snow totals. Staffordville the winner right now with over a foot of snow.

  98. Wx1box – National Weather Service Taunton Amateur Radio Skywarn Group
n1zzn reports marshfield ma – foster ave at brook street flooded due to coastal flooding.

  99. Worcester Airport never fails to deliver in their OBS.

“Light snow, fog and mist”…….all night.

  100. I just hit 12″ JJ. Can’t believe it. We’ve had a snow band (s) oriented over us in a NE to SW direction for essentially the last 15 hours and it has been snowing nearly an inch an hour that entire time. Still pouring down.

On a side note, this brings me up to 79″ for a season total here which is nearly our seasonal total in 2011.

    1. Me either Mark. I’ve been in that same band NE of you. At 16″ now and no let up in sight.

  101. Well ……… Wonder if nature is preparing us for the big one this summer………

It has been an active phase along the east coast, tropics wise, the last many years.

Just a thought, not to panic anyone. There certainly is no way to know what the tropics will do this summer. We might not have a tropical system come within 500 miles of us this coming season.

  102. Remember when it was going to rain?! Mother Nature heard those predictions and *#%{# slapped us!

  103. What a range here with snow totals in CT. Bradley where are records are kept for inland CT only 3.8 inches of snow so far bringing the total to 50.9 inches for the season. You go up in elevation and get caught under those heavy snow bands your getting close to that 1 foot if not exceeding the 1 foot mark in some places.

          1. This feels like a dusting here compared to the close to 30 inches that fell with the blizzard.
I would not be surprised to get another inch or two here before all is set and done and come close to the
            10 inch mark.

  104. A third darker shade of green is starting to show up in spots just north of the Cape and just east of Cape Ann….. And thats a fair distance away from the radar beam. Could the intensity of the precip increase even a bit more ?

  105. I’m gonna put this out there too.

I like this storm better than the blizzard – I like big surprises.

    1. Yup, just as intense and had we had the influx of colder air into the second half of the storm as with the blizzard, we’d have 20-30 inches of more powdery snow. I think the flooding is worst !

  106. Just saw traffic shots on CH 7. What a mess. 40 mph on the Pike from NY border to 495; no electricity on Tobin bridge so cars are being waived thru the tolls; Lynn Shore Drive closed; Morrisey Blvd in Dorchester closed due to flooding; jacknife truck on 495; etc.

  107. Got the yard stick on the deck and just watching it pile up….13″ now! It just keeps pouring in off the ocean. When is it going to stop!?

    1. Boy, we have some kind of teleconnection going this morning Tom – I was about to give O.S. the Norlun award.

  108. Snow Camp membership desk was extremely busy overnight; back logged severely despite adding a second call center with a few hundred reps in Bangalore. We are doing everything we can to accommodate everyone, your patience (as always) is greatly appreciated.

      1. Yes, the Commonwealth revoked their operating license and they had to disband. They are now occupying the space formerly held by 38 Studios.

    1. Too much !! πŸ™‚

Joe Joyce’s live shots in Brant Rock are amazing. Everytimea big wave hits, it sends a flood into the village.

  109. The Boston Public Schools Facebook page is awesome right now. Thank god for social media. So entertaining.

Btw- my work called for an optional snow day.

  110. Geez, even OS and Hadi underestimated this storm πŸ™‚

Tom, was thinking the same thing as you. If this was a month earlier and the snow ratios were higher, this would be a repeat of the blizzard with widespread 2-3 foot totals.

    1. It will be interesting to see the total melted precip when this is all said and done.

Next wall of intense snow arriving on the south shore.

  111. Has anyone noticed a distinct lack of snowplows in their area? I live on a major road (fire station, police staion, hospital) and the has been 1 plow down my street over the past 2 hours. Well, that isn’t true, there have been plows but the blades have not been down. I don’t understand, the roads are completely snow covered. It is almost like once they decided to cancel school they gave up.
On the plus side, there isn’t 18inches of digusting plow “junk” at the end of my driveway which will make shoveling out easier πŸ™‚

  112. It’s funny. Had the media outlets called for 12+ inches, schools would have been shut down yesterday at 5pm. But it’s like the school district can’t open their front door and make their own decision. I don’t know. Just feels like a broken system.

    1. DS, you are so right.

They were receiving too much conflicting information last evening.

Even so, they should have LOOKED OUT THE *(@#*^$ing Window at about
5AM and then made the call if they didn’t have the stones to make it last
      night.

      Just my OPINOOOOIIIIIIN.

  113. NWS Taunton Skywarn ‏@WX1BOX

KB1EKN-Mark reports Atlantic Ave/Gunrock Ave flooded/impassable in Hull MA.

  114. So, last night, the black top was peeking through the snow; my cat even went out last night–she doesn’t go far but she was just sitting out there for awhile in the gentle, light snowfall. Then this morning I woke up to a lot of snow–which I actually don’t know how to measure, unless you just stick a ruler in a nice spot. Anyway, school’s cancelled but I, of course, did not bring any work home since I did not believe it would snow. I guess the next activity for camp bust is shoveling, but I don’t really mind seeing as how there are cupholders everywhere…

  115. Get the sunglasses and sunscreen ready for tomorrow. Its going to be blinding with the strong March sun reflecting off the snowcover.

  116. Good morning all. Made it into the office and already made coffee. There are about
    6 of us here.

As posted above, after shoveling walk and digging the car out, made about 10 measurements at home in JP. I got a consistent 10 inches at 7:30AM and it was
    snowing buckets.

The drive in was atrocious! Roads in shambles and in desperate need of plowing.
Intersections congested with pedestrians and long light cycles. Got to the office
and parking lot hadn’t been plowed in hours. 4-6 inches in the lot. Finally go in OK.

I cannot believe that Boston had school today!!! SHAME ON THEM!!! I sincerely hope
no one gets hurt. IF I had children attending BPS, I would have CERTAINLY kept them home today. Totally and completely IRRESPONSIBLE!!!

Whoever made that call should be FIRED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On another note, I can’t believe that our Executive Director kept the office open today.
    Another BAD call.

    YAKADOOLA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

    1. OS VERY happy you are safe. do u mind my asking rough vicinity of where you had to drive to?

  117. My colleague and his wife boarded plane at 5:30 and have been sitting on runway. They are heading back to terminal. Runways just closed.

  118. The “Rhode Island Effect” is probably worthy of study with this storm. Will be interesting to hear TK’s take on this.

    1. Not only the Rhode Island “effect”, but this whole upper Norlun set up
should be a topic worth of study all on its own. Very unique set up that
we have all witnessed. In fact, we had FRONT ROW SEATS for it and
literally watched it evolve. Pretty cool in my opinion. πŸ˜€

  119. It is snowing even harder now in Marshfield. Small flakes, very thick, almost a heavily misty type of snow.

  120. Latest OBS from Logan:

    +SNFZF , vis .25 miles, Temp: 28 Dew: 28

Here current vis, between 1/4 and 1/2 mile. Hard to tell for sure.

    1. I admit to wavering last night and have my second course of crow as self inflicted punishment. Bony little critters aren’t they. To clarify I always thought Boston would see snow. It was the dry slot of framingham that had me worried.

  122. What an impressive storm on satellite. Its amazing because when you see a storm that position so far away you think fish storm. This is not the case with this one.
Snow still sticking here so it looks like might be adding to my 7 inches with the temperature below 32 degrees. Waiting to see if the heavier band that Mark has been getting maintains its intensity as it moves west.

  123. We picked up 14 inches in Westborough as of 8:45 am, and all of it accumulated after sunset yesterday. And it’s still falling at a decent clip!

  124. Iam hear in reading, just north of woburn and oh god is it snowing very heavily! Just looked at the radar and the yellows just passed over me, its insane out!

  125. Continuing to eat my humble pie to the point of vomiting blood. Again, nice job to Hadi and OS.

15″ here in Westwood and likely to close in on a foot and a half before all is set and done.

Precip tapering off in maine and will be ending from north to south. A couple-more hours of this and could easily see another 2-4 inches. Enjoy everyone! Wild storm!

I worked in RI yesterday and was shocked the dry slot did not move. It appears it still hasn’t. Strange!

    1. Arod,
Thanks for the kind words, but as others have stated, not a competition, just
a friendly blog to post our opinions and thoughts. You are right almost all
      of the time. No Worries.

I still can’t believe that dry slot in Rhode Island. Absolutely incredible.

  126. I underestimated the snowfall with this one. I did not think anyone on the 95 corridor points south and east would exceed 4 inches of snow nor did I expect as many double digit snowfall totals that we are seeing.
As I said earlier amazing for an ocean storm 500 miles away.

    1. I think he posted an analog for this storm a few days ago… in terms of where he thought the snow would fall the most intense, some of those places (and amounts) were not too far off!

  127. major echos headed this way. I put the timer on to see what happens.

    18.5″

We’re gonna blast right through 20 here

  128. This is borderline Buffalo weather, sheets of snow coming off the water, different setup, but same results.

  129. Ugh! Spent two hours clearing out snow with the snowblower. At least a foot here in Lynn. I cleared the sidewalks of 5 houses and did 3 driveways. My good deeds are done for the week. Still completely shocked at the amount of snow we got here.

    1. C’mon OS, the NAM has overcooked this storm.., er, ah, wait a minute, we could see another 1/2 foot?!?

  130. 16.5″ in Coventry,ct and the snow continues to come down heavily. heavy snow on the radar in CT has EXPANDED not contracted!

We all should have listened to Al Roker yesterday πŸ™‚

  131. Next October 4th, when its a normal 65F to 70F day, we can all remember that a day with equivalent daylight and sun strength, March 8th, was a pretty significant snowstorm.

      1. Darkest bands maybe, but the plume of snow coming off the ocean doesn’t appear to be letting up any time soon

  132. Just came in from shoveling and I measured 14.7 and 15.3 and it’s just dumping buckets of snow. Easily 1-1.5 per hour if not closer to 2 inches. Radar is just lite up in eastern mass.

    1. Wow! Look at all that erosion too all the way down the coastline. Looks like that might not be the only house to go down today unfortunately πŸ™

  133. guys, this is going to go down in the group of great surprise storms – especially recent history (20 years or so)

    1. True, except the storm didn’t surprise us, but some of the amounts have for sure!

The NWS put up a Winter Storm Watch, then removed it and replaced it with a Winter weather advisory and then replaced that with a Winter storm Warning.

No one had a clue as to what was going to happen, EXCEPT for the NAM.
      πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

Look, Even looking the Euro, it was clear it was going to be an event.

      So Hilariously funny!!

An absolutely amazing storm to say the least!!!!

    1. Thanks Hadi. What a totally BOGUS location to keep the City weather
records. I wonder what the Boston Common total is?

      I’ll bet at least 10 inches. πŸ˜€

    1. That’s incredible OS. Gulf moisture getting wrapped into this thing and getting deposited right over our heads…

    2. BB was saying he’s never seen anything like this. For a storm so far away to generate so much snow. Center is 600 miles off shore. Someone may have posted this already. I apologize if so

  134. Couple of TV mets using weasel words to tell us the storm is exiting slower than they originally anticipated.

  135. I think the 18″ in Walpole might be an overestimation by NWS. I’m there now working and i measured just under 12.” They may be including some of the compacted/partially melted/impossible to get an accurate measurement type of snow that fell yesterday morning and during the day though.

  136. Radar east of Boston and north of Cape reloading yet again with solid dark greens, wow !!

It is getting rather bright out. Cant see the disk of the sun and with the exception of a brief letup to light snow 10 minutes ago, its back to moderate snow once again.

I’d say there’s about 5 waterlogged inches of pure cement here.

    1. Yes, I can see this. Haven’t looked at radar in awhile until you posted.
      Thanks

Heavier band about to move in on Boston. πŸ˜€

  137. Winter Storm Warnings hoisted up in NY/Long Island and into NJ within the past hour. This monster is not satisfied with feasting on SNE, it wants some try-state action too!

  138. Given the scarcity of this type of storm setup in the past, some of the models did an admirable job of nailing the precipitation.

    1. Indeed. We could say that the NAM NAILED IT. SREF on target as well.
And to a lesser extent, the Euro did OK.

NOW, do they have a handle on WHEN it will end?

      We shall see.

    1. I’m starting to think that dry slot in RI is a radar malfunction. It has to be. Makes no sense.

      1. I don’t thik so. Look at the observations from Providence
(Actually it is at the airport in Warwick, south of Providence)

Lowest visibility reported was .75 miles. Most recent obs
were 1.5 miles in light snow. πŸ˜€

      1. Let me think. One is 12-9-2005. Other is probably 5-9-1977. Up for debate with others…

    1. Gotta love that one. πŸ˜€

Would be most interested in a POSTMORTEM when you have time, particularly the upper level “Norlun” like feature that most likely contributed to the
      impressive snowfall.

      Many thanks

  139. This is amazing that a storm that far away about 500 miles is delivering the amounts of snow we are getting. This was not a direct hit from this coastal storm with the circulation 500 miles south and east of us.

  140. 1) Tip my hat to Hadi and OS. 2 beers and 1 burger each at the Yard House on me.

    2) OS, can’t post TV met comments exactly but Pete, Melissa, etc saying storm will be exiting early afternoon and just a while go it was late am and before that it was mid-morning.

    3) The B’s won!

    4) On my way to FL on Tuesday ( so I can attend my first game in what I think will be a tough season for the Sox)

    1. Thanks Longshot, we got the snow correct, but we Way underestimated the amounts.

MY highest prediction was 11 inches for Taunton. I think they are
way over that already. πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

Enjoy your trip. Please tell Lester to lay off the beer and chicken. πŸ˜€

  141. The snow is not sticking to the roads where I am in CT with the some come down lighter and solar radiation helping out.
Northeast CT the big winners with this event. Staffordville last check 17.3 inches which is northeast of Hartford.

  142. 1 inch has fallen in the past 45 minutes. and thats on the driveway that i salted. and too think at 230 am this morning there was almost nothing in the way of accumulation and the snow was so light across my area. i have a toatal of 10 inches so far.

  143. Retrac where are you located? 11 inches here in reading, some 12 inches spots and.some 10, suprised that its actually low

  144. I swear BZ has been saying just 2-4 more inches in every forecast since 11 PM last night. the most recent timeline map on BZ says it’s not over until 2-3 PM. Storm about 600 miles off coast.

  145. 18 inches now. Radar still very impressive. I was watching the game end up north in down east maine. Storm should end from north to south but that line hasn’t budged in over an hour. No evidence that storm is ending as of yet and heavy snow still coming down. Someone is going to see more than 2 feet from this! Amazing!

  146. Old salty/ hadi. First time I stopped since 11 last night. Wow what a storm. Congrats on staying the path. Great job.

    1. No doubt! Go easy!!! A plow passed by about 5 minutes ago, and the road is completely snow covered again. Very worried about the BPS buses on the return trip filled with kids!

  147. Just took a walk outside, definitely coming down an inch an hour out here in Sherborn, looks like we have about 13″ or 14″ on the ground – mostly since 10PM last night. Large limbs starting to feel the effects of snow, some driveways had limbs bent and touching the ground. Thankfully, not a lot of snap, crackle and pop – so power looks good for the moment.

    1. Thanks KANE. I appreciate it.

So in JP we are in the 14-18 inch range. We’re in there now and may exceed it. πŸ˜€

INSANE snow right now in Boston!!

  148. Just some facts……

Mauna Loa CO2 approaching 400 ppm for the first time since its kept records ……

In October, we watched a massive noreaster type storm have within it a hurricane that had a minimum pressure of 940 mb that came into the mid-Atlantic at a perpendicular angle to the coastline, as it moved east to west……..

The US for a long time has been exceedingly drier than normal and overall, would still be classified as being drier than usual

In the last 4 weeks, our region has seen seen 3 storms with total melted precip of 2 inches or more in each individual storm

This most recent event has had some sort of convergence area/norlun trof/whatever you want to call it extending 500 miles westward from a storm center that has eyes wide opened.

The southern Phillipines, fairly close to the equator got crunched by a Dec hurricane that was said to be one of its worst.

The arctic’s ice coverage was at its lowest minimum since records have been being kept, while the antarctics ice coverage continues to run above normal compared to records.

Interesting weather events and times ahead, I do believe.

    1. Thanks Tom and JJ below and I agree. Joe J was just talking about the changes of late in our coastline – up and down the Atlantic. He said in a matter of years, the homes along the coast in Marshfield will not be there. He compared it to telling folks a few decades ago on Plum Island that their homes wouldn’t be there. He commented that it is climate change and we will have to just get used to that fact.

Tom we can also add that we have not had a below normal year worldwide since 1976 and that all 12 years in the 21st century are in the top 14 warmest on record. In 2012 alone we had “11 disasters that surpassed $1 billion in losses, including Superstorm Sandy, Hurricane Isaac, and tornadoes across the Great Plains, Texas, and the Southeast and Ohio Valley, NOAA said 2012 was second only to 1998 in the agency’s ‘extreme’ weather index.”

  149. With a warmer Atlantic Ocean I wonder if it means were going to have more intense coastal storms.
We saw this with the blizzard and how low the pressure was and the one the week after had a lower pressure than the blizzard. Of course Sandy with pressure in the low 940s was incredible to say the least.

  150. It’s never going to end! My current timeline for this storm to shut down is April 1st. πŸ™‚

  151. It is amazing that Logan reported only 2.6″ of snow just before midnight…actually though, only 3″ fell about the same time with the 1997 April Fools storm and then 22.4″ fell the rest of the early morning for the 25.4″ final total.

    1. Philip I went to bed somewhere just before 11:00 and I could still see the blacktop on our driveway and the street was clear. WE have to have about a foot right now. And better than half has accumulated from the time I woke up at 6:00. That’s a lot of snow an hour that’s for sure.

  152. Just measured close to 17.3 inches OS. The snow is coming down in sheets. Picked up 2 inches in the last 59 minutes.

  153. My Daughter just called me from Hopkinton. She was scared to death because her husband is out driving in this due to his work. They came on TV with an EMERGENCY broadcast saying that there will be an ADDITIONAL 12-24 inches of snow through 1PM!!!!

I had to tell her that it was not correct and it meant a TOTAL accumulation of 12-24 inches. She was relieved to say the least. (She probably heard it wrong, as what she
described was exactly what was posted above) πŸ˜€

    1. I don’t blame her for being terrified. When we are worried to begin with, it is hard to hear things exactly right. Glad she had her dad to talk to OS!!!

      1. post to whdh fb page – they’ll put it on. Better yet call their weatherspotter line at 800-255-5523

        That’s an amazing amount

  154. Well the NWS point forecast for Westborough last night was 3 to 6 inches… That was only ‘slightly’ off as we now have 16.5 in hahaha

  155. This norlun trough setup is what Maine gets almost every winter and did in fact just recently. Only this time it is happening for SNE for a change. Come to think about it, I don’t recall it ever happening around here other than maybe parts of the north shore.

Now Pete says heavy snow not ending in Boston until 1:00 p.m.

  156. Good thing the snow is lighter than expected. The entire eastern part of the state would be without power otherwise.

  157. This is when someone tells us that it’s not going to be warm this weekend, but more like 35. That will be the icing on the cake.

  158. Good Morning Everyone,

Just got into work (had to shovel early and then be on a conference call after that). I shouldn’t have bothered. The roads in the Hingham/Norwell area were actually better around 7 this morning. Very nasty conditions out there right now. Snow still falling at a moderate clip. I’d say we have somewhere around 9 inches or so on the ground…maybe even a little more.

    1. Looking at current radar and that is my concern Retrac. With your recorded 21″, and the way that band seems to be pointed right towards Worcester, we might be over 2-feet, and closer to the blizzard totals by the end of this.

Does anyone actually have a good idea when this is supposed to be shut off? My guys have been at since 7PM last night, looks like it is going to be a loooong day…

    1. Agreed, it looks like we’re in this for quite some time. I don’t see how this is done by 1.

    2. I think mid to late afternoon for the steady snow to end but I would not be surprised to see snow showers and flurries
      past then.
A big time over acheiver and I keep it saying it with a storm 500 miles away from us.

  160. Meanwhile, to our north in Maine…..

Bar Harbor, partly sunny, 39F …. Portland, ME, cloudy, 35F

Beach day up there, not fair !!!

  161. 18.5″ in Coventry, ct. It has lightened up a tad but still snowing moderately. Some roads here in the hills of tolland county are impassable. Just unbelievable.

85.5″ on the season now at my place has exceeded the total we had in the winter of 2010-2011.

    1. Mark other totals that impressed me were Bridgeport and New Haven coming in at the 6 -6.5 inch mark. I thought the shoreline would come in with 3 inches and under like what we are seeing in Southern New London County. The shoreline of CT
has more snow for the season than inland CT. Brideport where the records are kept have about 57 inches and Bradley where
inland records are kept has about 50.9 inches with 3.8 inches so far from this system.

    1. That’s what amazed me in Hingham….I got up around 4 am…looked outside and said..hmmm not too bad. It looked about the same as when I went to bed around 11. Well 2 and half hours later I was like…OMG!!

  162. I dont know if you guys remember but yesterday i postrd about how the page” northeast storm central” posted about the rpm model showing 1 to 2 feet of snow. I was thinking these guys are nuts for even mentioning it. Wow who would have thought!

  163. The snow must have inspired me!!
I just solved a major problem at work!!! Been working on it for days!!!
    πŸ˜€

  164. I’m officially joining camp bust after this one. I can’t handle anymore!

I have a big work event tonight starting at 7pm. 400+ people. Worried to say the least.

  165. Amazing stuff going on right now. Still dumping and radar echos remain juiced and continue to pound massachusetts. I’m still watching that line to our north over extreme southern maine to eventually collapse southward and this once and for all. Guess what? It’s not budging and until it does, no end is in sight!

    1. Agreed!! Amazing storm. A snow Blitz! A snow Dump!
      A snoworama!

      I still like SNOWPOCALYPSE!

      The great March SNOWPRIZE!!!!!

It is nearly 11:45 AM, almost tall Noon and I am watching the Snow
      Accumulate on Washington Street!!!

Sun Angle???? Not with this intensity! πŸ˜€

  166. A little disappointed in the governors press conference. I think conditions are more hazardous than they let on, quite frankly. Just my opinion.

      1. It might not be as widespread as other storms, but the impact is still the same, even worse IMO bc they arent able to keep up with the snow on the roads. Roads are terrible. Plus all the coastal concerns which are worse than the blizzard.

          1. I think he is just providing air cover for the BPS debacle. Just cut your losses and fess up, you only get torched when you pretend nothing happened.

      2. I had to rewind and listen cause I couldn’t believe what he said. My guess is its political-eze for we really screwed up not canceling school and need to cover out butts if heaven forbid something happens getting the kids home

  167. We better enjoy this since winter is over after this storm according to Henry Margusity. As I said yesterday I would love for one or both the coastal storms the almanac is predicting to happen at the end of the month to happen. I don’t think were done with the snow but I think this is the last sizeable storm we will see this winter.

  168. I am a little appalled at the School Districts in Eastern Mass that decided to have school today. They put countless children and their family members at risk for what? So they wouldn’t have school one day later in June? I also take issue to the TV Mets on their AM Broadcasts. If 12 to 18″ were forecasted for today, the entire state would have been shut down. This was a tough one to forecast, no doubt, but as of this morning these mets had enough information (especially radar) to know that this was not going to stop anytime soon and should have accurately communicated this to the general public so they could have made better decisions in regards to there families safety. I have heard two heartbreaking storm related story’s from my co-workers this morning. That could have been prevented.

    1. I use Barry as an example because I hold him in such high regard. I’m very disappointed with all of them

      1. I only watched 7. They were saying staring at 6:00 for people to work from home and stay off roads.

    2. I’m totally with you, Coastal. Where was the media frenzy when a media frenzy was needed? It’s not hype when it’s ACTUALLY HAPPENING.

The governors lackluster and almost dismissive press conference was also infuriating. And I’m a fan of his!

      1. See my comments above and I am also a fan of his. I do think they are covering their butts for not canceling school

    3. Coastal, I agree 100% and then some!!

Nuisance Snow! What the bleep is that guy smoking??????

This is an intense MAJOR full bore New England Snowstorm, with all
that goes with it. Nuisance, my A**!!!!!!

Many folks should be totally and completely embarrassed on this one!!

Whoever made the decision to keep Boston schools open should be arrested!!!!!

      1. He said its a nuisance storm and not an emergency. I wonder if the folks along the coast would agree about it not being an emergency. And isn’t the national guard there or am I wrong that they come out when state of emergency declared. I’m prob wrong about that. But did he declare state of emergency for coastal areas?

        1. Let me see now, A house fell into the ocean At Plum Island,
Major coastal flooding occurred all along the coast, Upwards of 2 feet or more Snow, many roads nearly impassable! Not an emergency. Nuisance Storm??

          GIMMIE A BREAK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

          1. I mean, SERIOUSLY. If I were a reporter, I would’ve been all over him for that “nuisance” comment.

Breaking News: Snow just abruptly stopped in Hampton, NH and sky is brightening. #hallelujah

  169. so yeah some of my freinds are so how about that forcast of having school. i said there is a 90 to 70% chance we would have school. one because of the dean and two because when i looked at radar last night and satilite and it looked like it would stay south of northeast mass and we would be in a dry slot but mother nature has the last say πŸ˜€ im happy that i was wrong πŸ˜€ i get a whole other week to study for a test πŸ˜€

  170. The end may finally be in sight albeit it’s going to take another couple of hours. The line is slowly collapsing from the north and northwest as more heavy bands continue to rotate in off the ocean. Could still be another 2-4 inches!

    1. Scott, I was up in ur area earlier in the week, some of the lower elevations had bare ground

  171. I’m headed out for lunch. This should be interesting. πŸ˜€

Will report back later, around 1:30PM or so.

Since I have the yardstick on the back seat now, May even take a measurement
or 2 if so moved. πŸ˜€

  172. All I need is another met to tell me just another 2-4″. I think I’ve been hearing that evry hour for the last 12 hours.

  173. DS, I saw that on BZ. for the storm to wrap up, they went from mid morning to late morning to early afternoon to 4-5 PM.

  174. Not sure if I posted this earlier or not, but I think Worcester has to be close to 100″ for the winter.

I don’t have a personal opinion on this because I do not live in Boston and my children are grown, but I am waiting to hear who will be the first to file a class action law suit against BPS. Teachers Union? Parents? Students? If a law suit does happen, it might be something to watch if it were filed by the students.

    1. i would love that to happen. students are so surpressed these days its not even funny. i felt it when i was in high school

      1. 32″ for the blizzard but for some reason this seems far more impressive. (lower wind maybe, easier to witness accumulation)

        1. I dont think you’ll quite get that, but i agree, i think its bc its daylight hours and we can see the accumulation happening

          1. no, i don’t see 32 but I wouldn’t be shocked if we make 28 because I’m at 23 right now and it’s pouring down.

  175. CapeCodWeather.Net ‏@capecodweather

In some spots on Mid-Cape the distance between bare ground everywhere and 2+” of snow is 1/2 mile. A degree or two matters.

  176. BPS are forgiving all absenses today, LOL but are still defending their decision to have school today. They claim it was too late to cancel.

  177. Still thumping here no let up. Haven’t been out but we must be closing in on 20 inches. Norwood had 13 at 7 am so I am guessing they must be close to 20 as well.

  178. Pete Bouchard ‏@pbouchardon7

Marathon about over. Finish line in the Merrimack Valley heading south. #wheresmytshirt #longrun

  179. I have a feeling that our event this evening is going to dwindle from the 400+ planned attendees. Oy.

    1. Not sure where the ham operator is in framingham. He/she had about 5 inches more in blizzard than I measured and I am rather pathetic about making sure I get accurate measurements. This time measurement is far closer however. Wonder I’d person is measuring and cleaning. I don’t do that any more.

  180. Eric Fisher ‏@EricFisherTWC

If Worcester, MA can manage to reach 20.9″ of snow, they will have nabbed two of their Top 10 all-time snowstorms – this yr!

  181. Greetings, first off my post earlier about the snow or no snow camps from two days ago was for entertainment only. It was not meant as a winner loser competition and I’m sorry if any one took it that way. Most of you learn more in one day than I have learned my whole life in meteorology. I am but a reader of events and sometimes post a guess about things based on what I read here and my gut feeling. Thank you one and all for all the information you provide it is invaluable. God Bless and maybe it will stop snowinig sometime today. Havc a fun day!

    Cheerio, Merlin

  182. Re: Logan; I believe they only do an official measurement every 6 hours, next one would be at 1PM ET.

  183. Wow we are in dire need of a new blog…hit refresh and go get a cup of coffee. πŸ™‚

About to start cleanup…any voluteers from all those snow lovers at Camp Snow? πŸ™‚

  184. Do I dare say that the 12z GFS has a feature for a week from today with some cold air feeding into it.

    Double Aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh !

  185. Jack Williams, ch 4 ……. “Going back to last night, there was no meteorologist on the planet forecasting this” (at this point, I was starting to laugh at his honesty, so I missed the last couple words).

Ch 4 went to a commercial. Too bad, after that statement, he definitely needed to turn it over to one of the Mets.

  186. matched a measurement from earlier at 1.8″ in one hour. Will be at 24″ in probably 10-15 minutes max. And there’s another serious blob headed this way.

  187. If it happens I want it to be on Saturday since I am going to NYC next Friday to see Wheel of Fortune. I am not worried about something that is a week away.

      1. Captain you ever get a chance to go see Wheel of Fortune in person its so worth it. I wish Jeopardy would tape some
shows in either NYC or Boston since I like that show as well.

    1. It will suddenly taper off as a shower or sprinkle. We might see the sun near sunset. Temps will jump into the mid-upper 30s later this afternoon.

      1. Tx Tom. Trying to figure when husband should leave work. Not that im letting him in the house. Still not pleased he went to work to begin with …….. πŸ˜‰

        1. :). I think by 4pm, road conditions will be improved at least somewhat, possibly significantly.

  188. The other day we were poking fun at Al Roker about his forecast on NBC of 12-24″. I think he was the only one that was somewhat close.

    1. Oh wow. You are right. Also ch 5 had much higher totals than other two stations and only lowered them yesterday.

  189. I just noticed that. I am scratching my head since accumulating snow is still happening in Massachusetts. They extended the warning in southern CT till 6pm and I am surprised NWS out of Taunton did not do that.

    1. Hopefully an error, a bit irresponsible to drop it while it is actually moderate to heavy snow in the previous warning areas.

  190. Vicki, a couple of mets have mentioned showers when it tapers off and as we all know the mets have been so accurate on this storm, how could they possibly be wrong about the showers. πŸ™‚

  191. Here’s why things on the roads will improve so quickly in an hour or two…

    Portland, ME : 41F, Portsmouth, NH : 39F, Bar Harbor, ME : 45F.

We’ll know in a couple hrs its March 8th and that we had an unbelievable snow event surrounded by a rather mild airmass. Watch the snow settle and compact his evening. It will be half as deep just due to this by say 10pm tonight.

  192. Anyone know if its supposed to get cold tonight? Are we still looking to be in the 50’s tomorrow or low 40’s?

    1. Chilly later tonight, especially inland if the skies clear and the winds relax a bit. Maybe upper 20s, something like that.

It will be interesting to see what the sun can accomplish tomorrow against the snowcover, as far as temps inland. Along the coast, I think the wind is still supposed to be lighter NE, so not that mild.

  193. Retrac!

    Mike Cronin Jr. ‏@mikecroninjr

#Holden DPW director tells me he’s seen reports of 23 inches of snow falling in town. Says cleanup is more difficult than recent blizzard

    1. Thanks for sharing that coastal. It sounds right. I measure on a board ,carefully, and have 24.25″ so far. Nice validation – thanks.

  194. One very key thing in Holden is that we had 4 inches by 5:00 yesterday that didn’t melt before this happened so it looks and feels like a two-footer. Couple miles down the road in distance and lower elevation in Worcester half of it melted yesterday.

    1. Same for us in Westborough, every thing that happened during the day yesterday melted away, the snow didn’t actually begin accumulating until sunset

      1. Exactly.

They asked me at NWS if we had snow on the ground already. Clearly makes a difference.

    2. retrac, that pic i posted above of my friend’s driveway, they shoveled at around 5am this morning, so that snow is from then till now

      1. Wow – I guess I know what I’m in for then because I’ve cleared nothing yet- even the original four. going out soon.

  195. Lee McGuire needs to stop reasoning for having school today at BPS. Apologize, get over it, and move on.

  196. Ok, I’m Back. Took a little longer that I thought. Went home to clear steps and
walk so that the mailman doesn’t fall and sue.

    Had some lunch with wife.

Took a measurement. Snow was MUCH wetter than this morning, so I’m afraid it
settled and compacted. Sorry Hadi, But I measured 15 inches. Also, on the walk where I had shoveled earlier when I had measured 10 inches, I measured 5 inches.

You’re a couple of miles away, who knows, you could easily have gotten under the
edge of a couple heavier bands that I didn’t catch? Or either that, you have
super up slope enhancement from Peters Hill. πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

Main roads were wet and to the pavement. Side rounds were Abysmal.

Snow is still accumulating, sun angle or not. πŸ˜€

          1. Yea looks like Plymouth and Bristol counties are under the gun for another band. Saturn’s last stand??

      1. Ha! I’m going to be complaining in a minute – headed to the driveway. I had 30″ earlier in the morning. I’m afraid to look.

What a storm though O.S. huh.

Just barely flurries here now. It dried up really fast. The radar is deceiving.

        Finished up at 24.4″

  197. Question for anyone who knows, apologies if this has already been discussed. It seemed to me that many of the models (including the Euro) were calling for a decent dumping for Eastern MA with the exception of the Cape and immediate coast. Is there a particular reason why forecasters were not believing the model output this time around?

    1. Check out some of TK’s last few blogs. There were PLENTY of good reasons not to believe the models, mainly wind direction assumptions, the fact that its March, sun angle, etc.

The models don’t always get it right. This time, they (sort of) did.

  198. Good dumping still going on in Plymouth right now. Just helped a coworker clean off her car and there was about 10 inches on it since 7 am.

  199. I get back from Lunch and NOW they decide to release us! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

I’m going to finish up something, then head out.

    πŸ˜€

  200. And the tide begins its returns.

Tide is still 2.8 ft above what it should be according to Boston Harbor tide guage.

    1. It’s heartbreaking to watch. Did you see the breech of the huge dune on Truro. Of course then there were spectators standing on the edges of the breech.

      1. Yes…. I did not know that was Truro.

I’m thinking of heading out for a ride and seeing how things look. Probably not directly towards Brant Rock. There’s other areas of Green Harbor to drive.

        1. Please let us know. We sort of hang on info for down your way. You know it holds a special place in our hearts. We are thinking of heading down that way Sunday.

        1. True but since we are doing such a good job messing up her job I’m not sure she is wholly to blame

  201. Wow….looking at that 12z EURO, it believes the high latitude block continues strong during mid March, with plenty of cold air near the northeast. Opportunities for waves of low pressure traveling to our south. I really dont think this was the last snow event.

With that said, I’ll enjoy the weekend sunshine and the early week warm sector.

    Melt snow, melt !

    1. I do, I think Logan doesn’t see another inch of snow for the season, if your talking west and north of 495 that may be a different story, I do respect your opinion but just disagree, will c πŸ™‚

      1. Oh, I will be thrilled for you to be correct !!!!!

It was a fascinating event, did like seeing all of the snow, but am so done with the snow ! Beyond done !

Whatever is left of the beaches, I’d like to start getting back to being on them, in the sun and with pleasant springlike temps.

  202. Transitioned to light snow in Sherborn, I think this is a wrap, final tally appears to be around 17″ or so. Not a bad haul for a late winter storm. Time to shovel!

  203. Still blowing and snowing here. Lost power for about 10 minutes but it is back. Hope it stays that way.

  204. Though the last bands on the south shore may look impressive, its not what happened from 5am til 1pm. At least here, its now a mix of rain and snow, the visibilities are way up. I’d assume we’ve climbed up a couple of degrees.

    1. I’m not sure what to say, I’ve had 34 people call me to ask how much we got plus called it in and the fellow said it sounds about right and then told him what was in wrentham which was 15, and said that sounds about right, so not sure, alot of variability in snowfalls in just a mike from what I’m noticing πŸ™‚

  205. OS when you get home you will see what I am talking about snow wise. Big difference from downtown.

  206. Wow, it is not often that we talk about them mets missing this much on the low end. Besides some of the misery on the coast, I don’t mind those misses. We got about 16-18 inches in Pelham, NH, but 15 miles up the road in Manchester, NH we got about 7 inches. There was an incredible cut off in southern NH. It might be time to break out our Logan predictions from the beginning of the year.

  207. Flurries here and snow is compacting fast for sure. Dripping water from the melting snow on front stairs.

  208. Hasn’t snowed in Woburn for a few hours…now that I am about done, it’s back. Hate to say it, but snow sucks. πŸ™‚

  209. 21″ in Westwood. Snow was winding down but just picked up again. Radar was showing the snow line collapsing but is hanging tough with likely another 1/2 hr-1 hr of snow left before it finally winds down.

    Perhaps another 2-4 inches?? πŸ˜€

  210. OS. Have a look at the radar I just posted. This last batch has not collapsed southeastward in over 1 hour!

  211. Sherborn darkened up and we have been snowing moderately for the past 30 minutes. About 3 miles due south of the pike.

  212. Another heavy band coming in off the Atlantic and nailing route 3. Still under the envelope of moderate snow here and the snow line has not moved in over an hour.

  213. Who would have thought most of the area would have received between 1-2 feet + and still be snowing at 4 o’clock this afternoon? What an awesome storm and finally a daytime storm where can appreciate the snowfall!

      1. If I didn’t have to drive up to Whitman to pick up my boys I would enjoy it. Hopefully the ride this afternoon will be better than this morning! Certainly a great storm though!

  214. I’m not sure what to say, I’ve had 34 people call me to ask how much we got plus called it in and the fellow said it sounds about right and then told him what was in wrentham which was 15, and said that sounds about right, so not sure, alot of variability in snowfalls in just a mike from what I’m noticing

  215. Taunton and Plymouth are getting blitzed! Radar collapsing a bit. I suspect snow in my area ends within a half hour. Wow! What a storm! Close to 2 feet in Westwood!

  216. I’m getting some plow guys that r telling me it’s much different up in the Norwood area, they got alot more snow, not sure how much there saying almost 2 ft, certainly not here, I’ve even driven a few miles south in rehoboth and they even got less maybe 6 inches

    1. Yes Charlie. I live the next town over from Norwood and we have closed in on 2 ft and it’s still snowing!

    1. That’s what I was trying to explain to OS a few months back but he didn’t understand. A forecast bust is when a forecast says one thing and mother nature provides us with another. In this case, indeed this was a major bust, but for snow lovers in a very very very good way!!!

  217. Out in Norwood right and about the same about of snow as home so I like my 20-21 inch number. Btw it’s snowing pretty good out here.

    1. Hadi. I’m in Westwood, the next town over. We have 24 + inches. As of 1 pm, the NWS said Norwood had 20 inches so likely has 22 +.

  218. Light snow in Westwood now. Edge will be moving through by 5pm. Last flakes may not stop until 5:30 here. Great storm! Better than the blizzard IMHO!

    1. Way underestimated, I can’t say that enough, and it’s so weird cause I keep hearing Burbank saying its not gonna be a blockbuster, hey we r all wrong one time or another, good storm but very localized, some people north of Boston r wondering what all the fuss is about, comparable to south of the city totally different

  219. I will say hadi and os were stubborn to keep saying they thought alot was coming, I give ya credit, closer than I was πŸ™‚

  220. I agree A-Rod – I loved this storm. And a surprise too. The Blizzard temps were 16 degrees here so the snow had no “meat” to it. This, totally different story. My yard looks like those giant snow piles at the mall – and it’s dense.

    For the record:

To compare, the blizzard put down 32″ here – and this storm put down 22.4″. To compare peak intensity, I checked my log. The peak of the blizzard lasted 7.5 hrs. here and this storm coincidentally had the exact amount of peak time – 7.5 hrs. The blizzard put down 13.0″ at 16f in that peak time while this storm put down 11.4″ at 27f in the same amount of time. Impressive IMHO.

O.S., remember a week ago this past Sunday when that 18z GFS run came out and we were freaking out.

GFS sucked again in the end. It had like .80 qpf of snow for interior.

TK was on track and ahead of NWS blending the NAM & Euro. I remember when he told JMA he was going to put a “dash” of the NAM in. It made me laugh at the time thinking of nature cooking up a storm and TK telling her not to add more than a dash of the NAM. She added more to the sauce when he wasn’t looking. πŸ™‚

  221. I can assure my numbers are correct as Logan was 13 inches that we are easily 20+ you home yet OS? What ya think.

    1. I’m out remeasuring as we speak, I’m measuring in 7 different places to see, they r all about 50 ft apart, I’ll be back

  222. It’s officially over here also,, ok I measured anywhere between 9.5 inches and 13 inches here in north attleboro, there r a few small drifts to 16-17 inches but not to bad cause of the wet nature of the snow, a quite a bit more fell in Wrentham where around 15 inches fell, it was quite a storm to say the least, I’m a little upset I’m missed some of it being in vt, be safe everyone πŸ™‚

    1. I also remember going to old weather spotter meetings and they taught us how to measure snow as accurate as you can πŸ™‚

    2. I wanna say some compaction has already happened considering its been a long duration storm

      1. Charlie the report was for 18 in framingham. We didnt get 18. For the blizzard same person said we had 30.5. We had just under 26. And I’m a very very careful when I measure.

  223. Pete is really beating himself up bad on air and on his blog…I guess not surprising since he forecasted ALL rain for Boston and ended up with 12″++. At least the other TV mets did forecast a few inches for Boston originally.

    Todd = 4-8″
    Harvey = 2-5″
    Kevin L. = 4-6″
    Pete = none/rain

    1. Though Barry on wed afternoon was saying on wbz radio just a couple inches in Boston, no one predicted this much πŸ™‚

      1. Seriously they all under reported it. As I said earlier 5 was close but even at the end they lowered their numbers. I think its time to understand that we are no longer seeing storms that in any way compare to what we knew. To the point they are beyond any common sense or training. Clearly they are beyond the models as well too

  224. On BZ, Todd gave a fairly lengthy 2 part answer to why it was a blown forecast. 1) Lower temps led to higher snow ratios. BZ believed they would get 3:1 off of a forecasted 31-32 degrees, but temps hung closer to 28 leading to something closer to the classic 10:1 ratio. 2) Todd’s bigger issue was a storm 600 miles off the coast was throwing precip (snow) back over the ocean. He described this as simply unprecedented–he may be right. In most cases you can see this with storms as far as 200 miles offshore but 600 miles is a rare event.

While getting an advanced degree, I was hit everyday with case studies. I am no met but I do believe that this would be a good abnormal case study for met students. It would be great to lay out this scenario and ask them for their forecast. I was once told by a prof when you have a “big situation” and the answers looks so obvious, you should be wary.

  225. HI ALL!

No I have not been hiding under a rock (it was actually in my car, covered with snow – just kidding!). I had a busy day which included shoveling the nearly 15 inches of snow, otherwise known as a busted forecast.

Not going into detail here on this comment but I will do a short post mortem on a blog update coming out early this evening. Hang in there! And if you decide to throw fruit, make it soft please. πŸ™‚

    1. TK, I posted Todd’s thoughts — they are not technical in that he was on air at the time so he was talking to the general public in simpler, more generic terms. Looking forward to your analysis.

    2. TK you know……….well I don’t know what to say and that’s a first. But it is really upsetting me that you or Pete or anyone is taking this hard and for All intents and purposes – beating yourselves up. The center was 600 miles off shore. And for one if anyone throws anything at you they’ll have to listen to me on my soapbox for hours on end and you know it doesn’t get much worse than that. However you know the respect you have here so its clear that would never be necessary.

  226. Todd and Harvey have something up for next Friday on their extended forecasts…here we go again?

    1. Actually the Euro and GFS show something. I looked at it and course you have to use all the caveats about a forecast 7 days out. And the placement of the 540 line was a little tough to read but at this point no sense in guessing — obviously the current storm tells us once again how difficult it can be just 24 hours out in NE.

  227. I’m actually not beating myself up too badly. Am I disappointed in the forecast? Sure. But yes this was a very unusual setup. I’d say about once in 5 years kind of rare. Doesn’t mean I don’t want to get it at right as possible, so from a forecasting standpoint, it’s disappointing. But I’m fine. This is what I do and I will be VERY wrong again. πŸ™‚

    1. You do an awesome job TK. Barry Burbank himself even said that he has never seen a storm like this in his 35 year career. This was a historic storm. One that will surely go down in the books. And we all experienced it and talked about it as it was happening. That’s pretty amazing!

    2. A reporter once asked a CEO “What made him successful?”
The CEO said “Two words, right decisions.”
The reporter said “Yes but how do you make right decisions?”
The CEO said “One word, experience.”
The reorter went on “But how do you get experience?”
The CEO said “Two words, wrong decisions.”

Probably true for most of us, whether we admit it or not, regardless of our profession.

      1. Very good analogy Longshot! I wish the mets would stop beating themselves up and just learn from this experience for future forecasts. I still and will always have faith in TK. πŸ™‚

  228. Well in methuen we finished with 15 inches, I had no school but plowed for 20 hours, night night πŸ™‚

  229. TK you are the most level headed met I have seen. You change forecasts when necessary but don’t jump back and forth. This is what makes your forecasts good and trustworthy.

  230. well 13 inches of snow here in billerica. some of which has compacted do to some melting. but add another 2 inches for what fell before. so i think i have a total snowfall of about 15.
alot of this will be gone by the end of next week.

  231. Took the kids out for pizza. The roads around here are really bad.

Nice to have an early bed night. The first in a about a week after watching model runs every night.

It was a good day for snow lovers.

    Talk you you guys tomorrow.

    1. Retrac husband came home through Weston and wayland. Pike was backed up. He said the roads were like a washboard. In wayland the car in front of him did a 180. It’s literally like an ice rink where the snow is really compacted. Amazing how much Better it was after blizzard and we had 2x the snow here for that

  232. Thanks everybody! I appreciate it all. Every word! πŸ™‚

Writing new blog now. Going to try to keep it on the shorter side. My arms, hands, fingers, everything kill. Getting old LOL!

    1. no its not that. its the fact that it started to melt right when it started to snow making it heivier

      1. Maybe it’s just the way I feel after shoveling when I didn’t think I’d be needing to shovel that much. πŸ˜‰
