A weak disturbance caused a few rain showers during the overnight hours though not everybody saw them. This disturbance will be moving away today but enough instability lingers for some variable amounts of cloudiness during the day. Weak high pressure moves in for Monday, which will be a decent Spring day, though not too warm, especially near the coast where winds will be onshore.
The Tuesday through late week period is still somewhat uncertain as a couple fronts will be nearby with cool air approaching from the west, not too far to the north, and of course over the ocean, battling a southerly flow trying to get established. The same low confidence general forecast remains in place for now and I will try to refine it a bit more for The Week Ahead post which appears later this evening.
Have a great Sunday!

TK, looks OK for Marathon, but not the temps we had for Marathon last year. I think it was in the 80’s last year.
Today’s AccuWeather Trivia Quiz
Which event has the highest wind speed?
A. Microburst
B. Hurricane
C. Tornado
D. Derecho
I got this one right. This is one of the easier ones. (I guess some viewers have let BZ know that the quizzes have been getting more difficult. :))
Answer later today.
D
I meant to say C. Was comfused before and thought D was Tornado.
Ill say D too.
What is funny is that this particular question is poorly-worded. It should say something like: “Which event has the highest wind speed, on average?”
Why?
In some cases, a microburst can have higher winds than a hurricane, a weak tornado, and a derecho.
In other cases, a hurricane’s wind gusts or even sustained winds can be stronger than a weak microburst, an EF-O or EF-1 tornado.
In still other cases, a derecho can have more powerful winds than a Cat 1 or 2 hurricane, even gusting into Cat 3 levels in extreme cases, and can also have stronger winds than the weakest tornadoes and even some microbursts?
But on average? C is right.
And if they were intending to ask it in such a way that which event has the highest recorded wind speed in history, do they mean with an anemometer, telemetry, or doppler? The latter two measured 318 MPH and 302 MPH, respectively, both in tornadoes.
So much for simple answers to simple questions! 🙂
Thanks TK.
Good Morning all 🙂 Thanks for the update TK! Vicki, I too looked forward to posting on the gardening blog that TK so kindly set up for us last year. Been in tax mode and recovering from surgery, but will work on getting some good tips posted on preparing our garden beds for the spring/summer season. Please let me know if there’s anything specific that interests you. Have a great Sunday!!!
Taxes are just plain nasty. I’m really sorry to hear you had surgery and hope you recover fully and quickly.
I have some specific questions but have to figure the space I will have first. Thank you!
Should I create a “taxes” section on WHW too? 😉
LOL
🙂
I was going to say C too. Taking the maximum winds ever recorded for each answer, tornado wins.
Wasn’t the highest wind recorded on mt Washington although I believe that has been challenged. 213? 231? I seem to remember that combination of numbers
231MPH on April 12 1934. The initial challenge was winds recorded by an instrument on Guam during Super Typhoon Paka. I believe the # was 258 MPH. But there was some controversy that the instrument was not calibrated properly.
Good I like the record to stay on Washington. Thanks TK.
Looking at the visible satellite, a whole lot of clouds in the cards again today. Maybe a little more sun than we had yesterday in Metro Boston though.
Cool and cloudy here. 45.2. But have the front door open and a few windows. Isn’t it funny how the same temp is actually different depending on the season. I doubt I’d have the windows open at 45 in the winter except for a daily airing out. Today it feels very nice
Heeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh…
Sprinkle from stratocumulus here in Woburn. I didn’t have that in the forecast. 😛
Just had a couple very light sprinkles in Plainville after a really dark cloud moved by.
I’ll go with C for the answer to the trivia question.
Winter refuses to give up in North Dakota and parts of Minnesota. I love snow but by April I am ready for spring.
Really threatening sky to west when we left Framingham. Dark clouds over natick. No precip tho
Few sprinkles in wrentham last hr w/sunny breaks, 50.3 degrees

This pic will be useless for the purpose after mid afternoon, but you can see as of midday the advancing warm air aloft, because it’s making diurnal cumulus/stratocumulus harder to sustain in northern PA. Watch their dissipation here.
What is that on the radar in Augusta GA????????
Lots of rain is what that is…
Shhhhhhhh we don’t say that out loud ;).
Showers were in the forecast for the final day at Masters. Hopefully the rain does not get heavy and the tournament will end today. Thankfully no severe weather expected but parts of Florida under tornado watch.
Everything looks so nice with the trees budding yellow and red, plus all of the colorful flowers we got looks nice all around the house 🙂
We have a few hardy plants coming up. Some tree buds. Not much green yet except a few lawn patches especially where people had them fertilized.
I’d say about 2 to 3 weeks behind last year! Was just looking at pics to compare. Amazing.
Agree TK re last year timing. But ahead by the same of what we consistently saw in 1980s and 90s.
Maybe a little but some of the older photos I have from the mid 80s thru the 90s show about the same kind of variability, at least around here. There were several years in the 1990s where leaves were not out yet at the end of April in the NW suburbs.
Way back in 1977 we had early leaves due to warm weather that came early, and then it snowed all over it on May 9-10 and many trees came down.
Pretty decent shot at seeing the aurora tonight around here. Hopefully the clouds clear.

Yeah I would agree tk though alot of my customers in the southern half have done there 1st mowing this weekend as the northern half esp north of Boston won’t mow for another 1-2 weeks, alot of clover and broadleaf weeds popping up everywhere, this is about a week behind last yr, but they have really taken off the last few days, soils r in the 50’s south 40’s north
Uxbridge is Same as we are with no mowing for weeks. Are you talking south of MA
Anyone that cares about there lawn and lives south of about Attleboro has mowed, I’ll be mowing my lawn on Thu in Wrentham plus treating the dandelions, alot of dandelions and clover, hope all is well
Charlie my SIL is a fanatic about his lawn and as I said it will not be mowed for a few weeks. Its lush and green and I dare you to so much as walk on it 🙂
Idk Vicki what to say, I have some pretty picky customers, I would even say some of my most pickiest customers down south of Providence have mowed twice, so idk Vicki, if it’s sod then it will lag behind a bit but even sod the last week has grown a little so again not sure what to say 🙂
Charlie my SIL is OCD house and yard. And i wont even mention how he is about his car. Maybe cause they are in Valley. Doesn’t much matter as it is as it is. Yards here not even close to thinking about mowing. My spring cleaning yard service has not been here yet and I haven’t even heard from the new yard company.
Geez I work with 4 landscaping comp and they have been doing spring cleanup a for 2 weeks, again , I sprinkled a little seed about 2 weeks ago on a bare area and it has germinated and Tue I’m performing my 1st of 65 spring seedings scheduled, again idk ,
I’m wondering why I haven’t heard from my new company and am about ready to have mac do the fertilization. But I’d like to get the cleanup done first
Thanks, TK.
It’s been a busy wknd. – visiting friends and relatives.
Rhododendron finally blooming and daffodils, too in our front yard. But, honestly, I just can’t sense spring in the air yet – felt cold and windy today. Beginning to look like spring but I can’t smell the scents of spring yet.
Anybody look at the radar in Florida? They have a tornado watch and in the middle of it is a freeze warning! I don’t think I’ve seen anything like before – lots of rain going on down there, ‘though.
Correction in grammar – I don’t think I’ve seen anything like “that” before.
We do have forsythia starting to come out up here. It was out in late March last year.
Yeah the forsythias down this way went yellow about a week to 10 days ago
Didnt see this comment. It seems Uxbridge is behind your area as they have just started showing yellow on forsythia. We are actually ahead of them here by a little. Guess that answers the questions.
And my lawns in uxbridge, northbridge,Douglas, whitens like are all behind the lawns say in Cumberland ri, it’s been a very bizarre spring lawn wise
Sounds right. I do wonder if its cause they are in a valley. They are typically colder than we are and behind us
That might be the reason 🙂
NWS has Thursday night’s low temps forecast 10 degrees warmer than next Sunday’s high temps for Boston area. 😉
That sounds like a brainteaser. Does that mean next sundays high will be cool?
Yes, but I’m not going as cool as they are. 🙂
Great masters. Will wait to make sure all have finished watching before saying more
Excellent Masters tournament. It had plenty of drama.
Sure did JJ. Glad you enjoyed it too !!!
biking for the first time since last september…. going on the minuteman. going to go bike to lexingtion and concord renactments
Tornado Watch here in Orlando
Unreal hook on radar near cape Canaveral
Believe a tornado confirmed on ground just east and north of Orlando
I see the warning boxes SE of Orlando. Is John there now too?? Be safe.
That’s E and SE.
Looks as if mark as some storms moving into SC too. Tom still looks to be having good weather.
Who did I forget who’s on vacation. Sorry 🙁
Striking conjunction in the western sky: crescent moon, planet Jupiter, and star Aldebaran form an inverted triangle.
Saw it earlier TK. Crescent moon is what my mom called Gods fingernail and so far all of her great grands have been born under a crescent moon. I figure its her way of looking down on them 🙂 My daughter saw it tonight and told her little one he’d better get a move on as the moon won’t wait too long 🙂
That tornado watch for central Florida goes until 10pm tonight.
Thank goodness it’s further east than Orlando towards the coast.
Blizzard warning in Bismarck, ND:
http://www.weather.com/weather/alerts/localalerts/USND0037?phenomena=BZ&significance=W&areaid=NDZ035&office=KBIS&etn=0008
Pretty late even for them.
Hope those big storms stay away Hadi.
Here in Hershey, PA …. a mostly sunny day turned a rather chilly morning into a pleasant afternoon with low 60s. We all have some minor sunburns on our faces from the sun. Hershey Park was not too crowded and the lines were pleasantly short.
Well, without looking at too much, I’m guessing a moderation is coming, as the EURO nailed the first two days of weather down here. Hoping to see the 70s sometime this week.
Can see the effect of the real warmth of last week, as the trees are full of buds and the grass is very green. We feel like we are a bit further south than we are.
Have a good Monday everyone !!
Buckets of rain here. Easily an 1 inch in 1/2 hour.
Saw a very bright meteor this evening driving on the Mass Pike
Were you able to tell what the dominant color was?
The Week Ahead is posted!
I believe it was white, but just passed through the toll so the lighting was very bright.
