The Week Ahead

10:52PM

Here’s a break-down of what I expect in southern New England during the coming 7 days.Β  Confidence decreases with time, as is typical, but more-so than usual this time because of what I mentioned in previous posts: chilly ocean, and fronts in the vicinity.

Monday (Patriots Day / Boston Marathon): Weak high pressure crests overhead with light winds leading to a sea breeze. For the Marathon, gathering runners early in the morning will be greeted by a rising sun filtered by some high clouds and chilly air with a temperature in the upper 30s. By race time, it should be rising rapidly through the 40s and hitting about 50, and as brighter sun comes out during the race it will warm into the 50s. But as runners approach the end of the course they will run into an ocean breeze and cooler air (lower 50s) but still with sun expected to be dominant. Inland areas will be less impacted by the sea breeze, and no impact at all is expected well inland.

Tuesday: Southerly wind ahead of a cold front = milder air except along the South Coast where wind is from over the water. Showers will likely push into the region from west to east during the evening with the approach of the cold front.

Wednesday: A little uncertain. Not sure how far south and east of the area the front moves. Should be cooler than Tuesday, but not too much so. Cloudiness is a wild-card. It may hang around especially in southern and eastern areas with the front not far away.

Thursday: Front pushes back to the north as a warm front. This means lots of clouds. Early feeling is that most rain associated with this front will stay west and north of the southeastern New England forecast area but will keep an eye on this.

Friday: Potential to be a very warm day with the taste of summer ahead of another cold front to the west of the region. Wild card again will be cloudiness. If the wind is southerly enough, plentiful moisture from the waters south of New England would result in more cloudiness and a lower temperature. A more southwesterly wind would likely allow for more sun and warmth before clouds, showers, and possible thunderstorms moved in from the west late day or at night.

Weekend: Front may be slow to clear the region Saturday, so going with unsettled weather. Optimistic for Sunday at this point, but far away and subject to change.

Forecast for southeastern New England…

OVERNIGHT: Mostly clear – some high clouds moving in toward dawn. Lows in the 30s except lower 40s urban centers and immediate coast. Wind NW under 10 MPH.

MONDAY – PATRIOTS DAY: Filtered sun with high clouds mainly through midday then brighter sun in the afternoon. Highs 55-60, cooling back a little during the afternoon. Wind NW to N up to 10 MPH early shifting to E and SE during the afternoon.

MONDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear evening. Partly cloudy overnight. Lows in the 40s. Wind SE to S up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Partly sunny most of the day then turning mostly cloudy from the west late. Showers at night. Highs 60-65 but holding in the 50s South Coast. Wind S 10-20 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny north. Mostly cloudy south. Low 46. High 60.

THURSDAY: Mostly cloudy northwest. Partly sunny southeast. Low 47. High 61.

FRIDAY: Partly sunny. Late-day showers/t-storms. Low 51. High 71.

SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers. Low 49. High 58.

SUNDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 34. High 61.

    1. I just heard Todd (BZ) say there will be a light head wind which may slow it down for the elite runners.

      1. It won’t be a major factor other than likely preventing any records from falling. πŸ™‚

  1. Answer to yeaterday’s Accuweather Trivia Quiz.

    Today’s AccuWeather Trivia Quiz

Which event has the highest wind speed?

    A. Microburst
    B. Hurricane
    C. Tornado
    D. Derecho

The answer is C (though as TK pointed out, it may not have been the best worded question).

  2. Sun declination is the same as Aug 26th sunrise 6:03am sunset 7:28pm,, April showers bring May flowers, does anybody still think we get a freeze, I don’t see 1 but I’m sure somebody does, and does anybody still think there’s potentials for snows over the next couple months? Lots of things to get done in the Weston, have a good day all, this post is suppose to be a little funny, good day all πŸ™‚

    1. Funny funny Charlie. πŸ™‚

The South Coast is probably done freezing. Some inland areas will still get a late frost and possible freeze as early as Sunday night. Also keep in mind that the expected temperature pattern is a little below normal for the second half of April and early May. This also slightly increases the chance of late frost/freeze especially inland lower elevations. Hard freeze? Not too likely at this point.

Best of luck with your outside work!

    2. The freeze this weekend is very unlikely as cold front to push through the area on Friday afternoon is not of artic origin. Freezes and chances for snow dramatically decrease at this point. Although I have been in the camp that we will not see accumulating snow until next winter. Enjoy the outdoor work. I just did 9 hours worth yesterday and can barely move.

      1. You don’t need Arctic air for a freeze. It can happen under high pressure, clear sky, light wind, and dewpoints below 30 coming off a cool day.

Given that Boston’s last frost date falls between April 11 & 20 on average, the suburbs can certainly frost AND freeze into early May. Of course it becomes less likely, but it’s not impossible.

        1. I’m aware; however, associated cold front friday night is slow to move out thus high pressure, clear sky and dewpoints below 30 don’t occur;) Temps rebound nicely Saturday with highs still in the 50s and Sundays high back in the 60s πŸ˜€

          1. That’s why I alluded to the only possibility of one based on that timing would be Sunday night next weekend if the high pressure area was right on top of us. And at that probably only inland valleys. Some of the valley areas this morning were between 30 and 32 and this was surely not an airmass of Arctic origin either. Just spotty cold spots from here on, unless you have a very late season out of place shot of very cold air which are far more rare now than calm high pressure mornings.

It is interesting to note, however, that NWS’s zone forecast yesterday forecast “mid 40s” for next Sunday, whereas this morning’s update has “highs around 60”. πŸ™‚

            1. I completely discredit the NWS. The airmass is supposed to moderate after the impending cold front Friday evening. I think Sundays temps hit 60+.

              1. I am often unimpressed with some of the output in those forecasts.

BTW thank you for taking part in this temperature discussion about Sunday, because it prompted me to go look at what I had, when I realized it was a typo. I put 51 instead of 61. All fixed. πŸ™‚

      1. You would be correct. Hard freeze is below 28. And we all know surface temps (measured about 5 feet) don’t have to be below freezing to have a frost because it’s colder right at the ground surface.

  3. Does anyone know if the aurora was visible last night around here? The skies cleared nicely but I dont think it was as strong as originally thought to make it down to our latitudes.

        1. Its funny cuz it was very publicized by some outlets as even being visible down into the mid atlantic. In reality it is a very difficult thing to predict.

          1. It’s very hard to predict when it will be seen in areas it is not normally seen. It tends to be a surprise. March 1989 was WAY more impressive than anyone ever suspected.

  4. Now see last night got to 33.1 degrees but no damage noticeable to plants and flowers πŸ™‚

  5. Happy Patriots Day! Although it is Marathon Monday and everyone is all excited about the Marathon (which is good) I think that we should remember that it is Patriots Day, too.

We are lucky it is a nice day, too.

    1. Rainshine we hope to go to the wayside inn Friday. They have their reinactment in the actual date. I was lucky enough to be there for dinner on April 18,1976 when they had fife and drum corps playing throughout and minutemen gathering. Its such an important event in our history and I’m sorry it is overlooked by most of the country.

      1. Instead most people would rather celebrate Columbus Day. Yup, a guy who got lost looking for trade routes to India and was credited with discovering a country that was already inhabited by natives for centuries and was visited by the Vikings among others…. Yup! What an observance. πŸ˜‰

  6. It’s on WBZ – some explosions. I want to cry – injured people. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone there, too.

Why? What is wrong with this world???

  7. As of 4:20PM, 23 injured, 2 dead, 2 explosions, and possibly a couple other “make-shift” devices that had not gone off. Also getting reports of bomb threats in Cambridge. Parts of Mass Ave are being shut down.

    1. Ironically in a way this comes on the same day I got news that they are no longer going to hold the annual Jaffrey Festival of Fireworks in Jaffrey NH (put on by my friends at Atlas Pyrovision) because the event was cancelled last year due to a threat to all attending and they have decided to not hold it anymore because they would have to increase entry costs more than they want to charge their fans.

Sad. Because of one moron that sent them a letter last year 1 week before the event threatening the crowd if the event was held.

      1. TK, so Atlas isn’t holding the fireworks in Jaffrey ever again? I know about last year, one of my best friends is a firefighter in Jaffrey. Like you said, so annoying that one person ruined it for everyone. We used to watch the show from their house!

        1. They put out that announcement today. I hold out hope they find a location that security is easy to set up for in the future and it will return.

  8. I hope I’m wrong but this is looking like some kind of terrorism attack on Boston. Intelligence just said two more devices were just found.

  9. I have been meaning to go one day to the Lens’ Crafters store on Boylston Street to get my eyelass prescription filled and to donate some old eyeglasses. I heard that location was the source of the explosion and is now completely destroyed.

It is obvious that I am going to have to go elsewhere now…a very sad day for the city of Boston to say the least. πŸ™

    1. In fact, years ago I used to get my eyes examined there as well. One of their doctors noticed something with my eyes and highly recomended me to go see a specialist where I have been gong to see ever since. It is an office in Brookline Village.

  10. Horrible day. Didnt no anything until my son txtd to say he was ok. We knew he was watching in that area.

Just heard there is a ground stop at Logan

      1. Vicki – prayers that your son’s friend and colleagues are okay! I know they said no one was hurt at JFK, but still, it was SCARY!

        1. Thank you very much. They are fine and all together. I think everyone needs to just be with others when something like this happens.

  11. I just heard from the BPD Commissioner that there has been another explosion at the JFK Library!

  12. There have been 3 explosions now. Again I hope and pray the number of dead and injured does not go up. My thoughts and prayers are with those affected.
Security being stepped up in NYC and D.C.

  13. Due to security concerns, tonight’s Bruins game has been postponed…no rescheduled date has been announced as of yet.

    1. I used to work at New England Financial (now Metlife Boston), at 501 Boylston, which is between Berkeley and Clarendon Streets. So frightening….

    1. One of inured was a student with a visa. They r not sure whether he is a suspect. Thanks John for updating.

      1. My wife works at the Brigham. Got word that suddenly in the ER one of the injured was quickly surrounded by many many police officers

  14. Spent the afternoon tracking down and FINALLY getting hold of children. 3 out of my 4 kids live/work downtown. All OK. My second oldest was on Boylston and saw explosions and is completely freaked out. One of my others is in lockdown in her downtown dorm. But all are safe. (Thanks for letting me vent.)

    1. Please vent although it is not venting. It is the fear of a parent that we all know. Thank God your family is all right and what a horribly stressful day for you.. I’ve thanks my son repeatedly for thinking to txt us all ASAP to let us know he was ok. Even then we are all shaken knowing he was so close.

  15. Watching from Pennsylvania, horrified and concerned. Hope everyone here who has relatives in that area are safe. My wife’s cousin crossed the finish line before the explosions. My mother-in-law talked to them and they are ok.

    1. Speaking pennsylvania. Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington is closed for security reasons regarding the white house.

  16. I was in Cleveland Circle running when emergency vehicles started screaming by. Was stopped at mile 24.5 and told race over. No cell service, had family in Kenmore. Such a horrible end to a beautiful day. I’m completely overwhelmed and do thankful to be home safe. Prayers to all those affected.

  17. We are thinking of everyone at home tonight and hoping all of you and your families are safe and sound. We had a few family members in that part of the city today, but all are safe. The fact that children were involved makes it even more heartbreaking. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone impacted by this horrible event today.

  18. Victims at children’s now. A close friend works in the er.

9-year-old girl with severe leg trauma (in OR)
42 year-old parent of a being treated in the ED for deep lacerations.
7-year-old boy is being treated in the ED for a minor leg injury. Psych services offered.
12 year old with a femur fracture has been admitted for pain/ psychological assistance.
A 2 year-old-boy with a head injury has been admitted to the Medical/Surgical ICU.

  19. Let’s all be careful assuming things. You will hear a lot of stuff and have to filter through the real and fake info.

    1. Hadi it was a terrorist attack either by a group or person. Either way this was a terrorist attack. Really.

  20. My aunt and cousin were there, walking along the sidewalk toward the finish line. They had just passed the site of the second explosion and were 200 feet from the site of the first explosion when it occurred. The only reason they were not right in front of the building at that moment was due to being slowed down on the crowded sidewalk by a lady pushing a baby carriage. They were very lucky.

  21. Nothing yet TJ. I am just sensitive to these situations. It’s a terrioist attack we just don’t know who. Yes John really.

  22. I don’t care who it was. Foreign. Domestic. What color. What religion. None of it matters. It’s time to take back what they are taking away. If I ever came across the person or people, I’d be happy to tear them in half from head to toe…the long way. And I hate violence. But terrorism is too far over the line.

  23. It doesn’t matter TK to you but it matters to us who are a different background. You have never been subjected to racial profiling. But yes I agree we should find them and punish them as the law sees fit.

    1. A different background from who though?

Aren’t we all from different backgrounds?

I think it’s completely wrong that racial profiling is done at all.

But in reality, I, as a white male, am also subject to it. There are people that would assume I automatically am a racist because of what I am. All of that is equally wrong.

I want whoever did it CAUGHT and SEVERELY PUNISHED, because they attacked innocent people. Whether they worship God, Allah, Mickey Mouse, or sawdust has nothing to do with it in my eyes.

      ENOUGH is ENOUGH!

  24. What pisses me of the most that the media (some atleast) blame it on an arab guy already. Apparrently there was a suapicious 20 year old saudi arabian guy acting suspicious runinng AWAY from the bomb? And now he is bring questioned by the FBI. Everyobe was running away? The citizen who turned him is an ignorant person who shudnt have acted that way. Just cz he was middle eastern he was seen acting ” suspicious”. Me bring from the middle east its really frusturating seeing these things.

  25. Thanks, TK.

Again, my prayers and thoughts go out to all those affected by yesterday’s tragedy.

Not to get away from the subject, but just to briefly put a smile on some of our faces – latest winter storm is now called Yogi. Enough said? Anyone laughing yet? Gosh, TWC is determined to get to Zeus even if someone gets a snow flurry! And what if someone gets a snowstorm after Zeus this season? Start with new names? πŸ™‚
