Unsettled Through The Weekend

8:37PM

Low pressure will spin around and lift northward through the northeastern US through Friday, replaced with another low pressure system moving west to east across the region during the weekend. This means an unsettled stretch of weather – not raining all the time though. Temperatures will also be variable, coolest near the coast. Friday may be quite a warm day as we get into a southwesterly flow between systems.

THURSDAY NIGHT AND FRIDAY: Variably cloudy. A few showers and thunderstorms Thursday night. Lows in the 50s. Highs in the 70s except some 60s South Coast. Wind S to SW 5-15 MPH.

    1. One of my good friends just moved to your area. Maybe I’ll run into you when I visit her. 🙂

      1. Come on down on a Wednesday night in the summer and enjoy a free concert at the waterfront. Great way to spend an evening!

    1. There was a bit of a chill from the breeze out of the SE within 10 miles of the coast, but otherwise you could feel a little mugginess in the air, and when the sun did shine (which it did for quite a while north of Boston today) it was quite warm out there.

      1. Thanks for the update TK

I even tried to sit on the porch after the sun set and it just felt damp. DP and temp were mostly even for the day. Yuk muggy.

  1. And just think, this is just the beginning of these kinds of days for the next 4-5 months 🙁

  2. Thank you, TK! I was going to make a quick complaint/rant about the mugginess, although I did love today – it was warm, we had gentle showers which felt good, the sun shone. I have to complain about how it is now. It’s 60* and clammy. If I close the windows, the humidity in the air will make the house feel stuffy and warm. If I leave the windows open, it’s clammy. Can’t win!

    1. We were just trying to decide what to do with the windows. Add in pollen and I think its a lose lose. Darn 🙁

      1. At least parts of the region will see the pollen count temporarily drop off as showers/downpours move through. Won’t do much to dent the rain deficit though.

  3. WOW – 1 VIVID lightning and LOUD, rumbling, bangy thunder in Chelmsford just now!

    1. That was a very long-distance positive lightning bolt that originated somewhere west of Boston and the northern end of the bolt struck the ground in the Chelmsford area.

      1. WOW, really? Any idea where? I live between Drum Hill and Westford and saw the flash from what looked (guesstimating) like perhaps from the northwest. I was reading something and saw the lightning out of several windows in the room I was in. I had closed the windows on the first floor of my house (where I was), and left the upstairs windows (bedrooms) open. The thunder was extremely loud.

  4. 57 deg with 57 dp……fog lifting a bit. Looks like an early summer morning out there.

  5. On this date (May 9, 1977) Boston received a record 0.5″ of snow with a foot or more in the nearby N&W suburbs. The record low for Boston is 35 degrees and the record high is 95 degrees set on this date two years later in 1979.

May 9th is infamous for sure at least weatherwise around here. 😉

    1. In JP, a mere 5 or 6 miles from Logan, we had 2 inches from that.
Newton had 6 inches and it only went up from there as one headed
      SW,W and NW. 😀

  6. Philip thanks for the information.
3 months ago today the Blizzard of 2013 was winding down and the big cleanup began. What a storm that was and I never remember seeing snow banks that tall after one storm and some people using snowblowers to clear their street so they could get out.

  7. Morning,

Last evening, around 11:15PM or so, we heard a loud Boom. My wife was
so traumatized by the recent Marathon bombings that she thought for certain that
a bomb had gone off nearby. I had to reassure her that is was just thunder.
She jumped up, not believing me, to check out the window. When she saw that
it was pouring out, she then knew it was, indeed, thunder. That was followed by
a couple of more cracks of loud thunder, then it was done.

Looks like more chances through Saturday.

Have a great day all. 😀

    1. It is good to hear from you OS when the weather is boring. IIRC last year we didn’t see a post from you until around or just shortly after hurricane Sandy.

Continue to keep in touch when you can! 😀

        1. Hi Flowergirl…. Here is the thunderstorm index 1-4. The higher the number the worse the thunderstorm threat
          is.
          1. Non Severe Thunderstorms
          2. Some Severe Storms
          3. Widespread Severe Thunderstorms
          4. Widespread Severe Thunderstorms with the the threat of tornadoes.

  8. Heavy downpours here, up to .51 so far since yesterday am, I see about 3 quarters to 1 inch of rain with this whole system, then more Sat 🙂

  9. Looks like an intense, small cell headed for the western side of Buzzards Bay.

Marshfield has gotten a few heavy showers, but thats about it. I’m pretty sure our area hasn’t reached .25 inches yet.

  10. Newton: raining, heavy a few minutes ago, temp 61, and absolutely no wind at all.

BB mentioned that we might see sun briefly before next batch of rain moves in.

  11. Hi all. Planted grass seed 12 days ago. Grass germinated 2-3 days ago and is now 3/4 of an inch long. Do you think these downpoors will heard the new seedlings?

  12. That rain and embedded thunder have prompted flood advisories to be issued. These are not severe thunderstorms but a good amount of rain is falling in a short of amount of time.

  13. Just read a special weather statement and dime size hail with winds around 30 mph along with heavy rainfall around the Boston and Worcester area. This is the strongest thunderstorm I have seen today but staying below severe criteria.
For severe thunderstorms you need hail 1 inch in diameter or greater and or winds in excess of 58mph.

  14. Just got home. Had a few very loud claps of Thunder and a tremendous downpour. I was over on Rt 9/30 in the Framingham center area. Rt 9 flooded a bit. Something else may be moving in.

    1. I’m very happy 🙂 Vicki I’m sorry I haven’t gotten back yet but how’s the lawn?

      1. With a double fertilization we r not sure what to do about the pre emergent or whatever weed stuff we are supposed to use. Please do not worry about getting back to me. I’m delighted you are busy

  15. some tropical like downpoors with thunderstorms have had 2 rounds so far go through the past two days. with lots of drizzle

  16. Uxbridge has some Impressive storms :(. My daughter enjoys telling me once she finds our we had next to nothing

  17. Charlie, where were you today with those totals? Crazy looking sky when I got home tonight.

    1. North Attleboro these totals were from yesterday and today almost a quarter inch yesterday and a little over 3 quarters of an inch today

      1. I got a 1/4 and then a half today. That was the type of set up though, where one location in town could get one amount and another side of town could be different.

  18. North thanks for posting that link. The drought has gone up here in most of CT to moderate where last week the whole state was abnormally dry.

    1. It seems that you guys always get more rain than us too. Hopefully this rain will help.

  19. I’ve been doing some census figures and looking at different stats, the way we r going now Boston will fall to the 38th biggest city from 21st today by the year 2040 we will be smaller than places like Reno,Milwaukee and a number of other cities that today r considered small to medium size cities and become more powerless as a state, also by the year 2020 Mass will lose a house seat and then lose another house seat in 2030, not sure what to say to the kids or grand kids if you have any, I willingly to compromise with the folks that fight change, have a good night everyone 🙂

  20. Interesting to see the reports of funnel clouds. I guess there’s an area to be investigated today by the NWS for possible touchdown of what is being reported, as a possible weak tornado. Also, many reports of lightning strikes and we had a shed struck and burned to the ground about a 1/2 mile south of our neighborhood.

  21. The EURO is going back and forth again long term with its NAO projection. Its 0z run is very mild to warm longterm (days 7 to 10). I guess the GFS is unsettled mid to late next week, while the EURO is not. I will say that a few weeks ago, the EURO picked up on the rex block that gave us all that sunny weather a few days before the GFS figured it out.

  22. Tom I saw that about a possible tornado too. NWS is going to stoughton. Also I believe Easton.
