Low pressure departs southern New England early this morning and a weak westerly flow overtakes the region through the day, but this land breeze will promote nicer, warmer weather for the day. It won’t hang around, however, as another low pressure area passing to the north this weekend will drag a warm front across the region Saturday morning and a cold front Saturday night. The sensible weather with these departing and arriving systems will including areas of fog early today, a mix of clouds and sun during the day today, clouds returning tonight, a period of rain or showers part of the day Saturday with a break between that and showers/thunderstorms later Saturday into Saturday night. By Sunday, Mothers Day, the cold front will be ambling its way offshore, and though clouds may linger to start, at least some sunshine and drier air is expected to make for a decent midday and afternoon. Early next week, expect a shot of cooler but dry weather.
Forecast for southeastern New England (RI, eastern MA, southern NH)…

SATURDAY: Cloudy with a period of rain or showers develop morning tapering midday. Partial sun afternoon then heavier clouds with showers/thunderstorms by late afternoon. Highs 72-77 except some 60s South Coast. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.

Thanks TK!
Thank you TK!!
Good morning.
Any thoughts on the weather events yesterday afternoon?
JJ care to change your T-storm index?
Pretty wild!!
How did that happen?
Comments?
Have a great day all.
Last night, Todd was showing cell phone video from Easton.
Very difficult to tell from that, but Todd thought there was rotation.
Some pretty strong winds to move those RVs in Stoughton.
Still could have been straight line winds there, but impressive none-the-less.
I got caught in a deluge on the drive home last night. I thought the rain
drops were going to come right through the roof. π
OS it was like that here late afternoon too. Actually, I thought of you as I left the place I was in Framingham center to come home. There was an incredibly dark shelf of clouds moving in and it made me wonder if there could be tornado potential. The second I got home I headed to my computer and to see if you had commented on here – which you had. When I saw you hadn’t mentioned rotation, I felt better.
Hi Vicki,
I saw the NEXRAD radars and posted. On that radar,
it did not show any “Vortex” signatures, which of course,
is one of the first things I look at. It did,
however, indicate that 2 of the local storms had a high
probability of Hail.
Right now, I am somewhat concerned about tomorrow, especially inland away from the marine influence from
a SW wind. I would not be surprised IF there weren’t
a Severe Thunderstorm watch for the Berkshires and CT River valley, perhaps as far east as Worcester or so.
I’ll be looking more carefully later to make sure there is NO threat of Umm, err, umm “tornadoes” π
I read your comment yesterday and remember you saying all of that. I knew that at that time, there was no circulation because you would have seen it. That’s why I felt better π
I’ll watch for updates for tomorrow and am happy to have the heads up. We are all gathering here for a mother’s day celebration and then son and his girlfriend will drive down to southern coast of RI. Although that sounds east of your area of concern, I will be sure to check here before anyone leaves.
this is a great break between bad weather and playing basketball after i take my math test. going to the beach next weekend with some freinds to start off my summer vaca . I can not wait π
So far, SPC just has us in a general thunderstorm area for tomorrow, with
any severe threat limited to the Eastern Virginia or so.
Here are all of the details:
http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/outlook/day2otlk.html
Also winds for tomorrow are slated to be generally SW from the surface right on up
to 300MB. Excellent if you don’t like tornadoes. π
Tornado in Stoughton yesterday has now been confirmed!
Do you have a link? thanks
Wow, I dont think there was one warning yesterday.
Here is something anyway:
http://stoughton.patch.com/articles/national-weather-service-confirms-stoughton-tornado
Wow –
There’s a video on WHDH –
http://www1.whdh.com/news/articles/local/10010587795493/nws-confirms-tornado-touched-down-in-stoughton/
80.7 degrees!!!!
Am I correct that it was an F0 tornado with 50-90 mph winds?
I have a friend that lives off of 138 in Stoughton and didn’t even know there was a small tornado until he watched the noontime news, then he went to the area where they thought the tornado happened and he couldn’t find anymore damage than some branches and leaves heavily coating the road, any thoughts
There was a lot of damage at an RV park in the area.
Mobile homes?
I believe where they sell them. I think it’s in the article I posted but not sure
Oh
Tornados like mobile homes, seems like when they hit the south they r almost always mobile homes, when I lived in Tx I’ve seen just a severe tstorm knock 1 off its foundation, very weak structures,
I don’t think it was a mobile home but I agree and always wonder why mobile home parks are in tornado prone areas
Because there are tons of mobile home parks in tornado country. π That’s the only reason. π
Just cause they can π
mobile home areas usually cover flater lands where tornadoes form.
Wow a tornado touchdown when the conditions were not favorable for tornadic development.
Here is a breakdown of the fujita scale.
http://www.spc.noaa.gov/faq/tornado/f-scale.html
Actually, you want to use the new EF scale and there was a link within
your link:
http://www.spc.noaa.gov/faq/tornado/ef-scale.html
So even an EF0 can cause damage.
However, based on the movement of those heavy RVs,
I am wondering IF it weren’t an EF1?
I wondered too — I know the area of damage was not large but the vehicles were thousands of pounds and were picked up. Do you know how they determine the rating?
I’m assuming they believe a 6,000 lb dead weight can be moved/picked up and tossed around by 85 mph wind? Is it more intense when it’s a tornado than it would be during a hurricane?
Talking about severe weather …..
Tomorrow’s surface features have some similarities to June 1, 2011 during the severe weather, tornado outbreak.
I’m not saying there will be tornadoes tomorrow.
However, there is a low going to our northwest with a potentially active morning warm frontal passage. Anyone remember the nasty morning storms of June 1, 2011 ? Then, a break followed by showers and storms on the cold front.
There are some mid 60F dewpoints in the Ohio Valley ahead of this cold front. Interesting to see if eastern New England gets into some sunshine tomorrow …..
I dont think the jet stream will be as strong overhead tomorrow as it was on that June day, so that should help greatly keeping things less intense. But still, tomorrow later in the day could be quite active.
Agree.
i think a better chance of seeing thunderstorms on mothers day afternoon
http://coolwx.com/modelts/images/gfs/current/KORH/prec.png
huh? (I know it’s not gonna happen but I don’t like the plot regardless)
it would be hilarious lol nothing says summer like a last snowflakes 2 days before i am planning on going to the beach lol
Perhaps that is hail? I believe hail and snow are one in the same in terms of climatological data. Maybe some nasty boomers for next week? Hope not.
Just my 1c…not even worth 2c. π
It’s actually cold air advection snow showers on the model run.
What area is this for retrac. And what’s that on may 15?
Night of Tuesday May 14 on the model run.
Woooo hoooo. Does that mean I have to stay up all night…..I will π
i would stay up for that with no hassle . but sadly i have a math final the following day so it might not be the best idea lol
Worcester Airport Vicki
Hello all!! Back from an unreal experience in Cuba. Not many communist countries left in the world and what a fascinating and interesting place. Beautiful people, amazing music, dance, ballet and art. People were so wonderful and friendly to all of us.
Weather was hot and sunny most of the time except in Habana to start.
Glad you had a great time! Welcome back!
Welcome back and also glad you had a wonderful time
Todayβs AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.
Which one is NOT true about lightning?
A. A leading cause of forest fires
B. Can strike 15 miles away from the storm
C. Enriches the soil with nitrogen
D. Always strikes the highest/tallest spot
I got this one right! Answer later today. No cheating!
D. Thank you!!
I am with Vicki, I say D also.
π
Looks like a C for TK ;). I’m using my phone so can’t be absolutely sure π
I will say D.
No it was a smiley because I was agreeing with all of you.
Is the threat of rain gone for the day? We are having Mother’s Day lunch here and it’d be great to have it outdoors
I am going with D. Welcome back Hadi.
An unsettled Saturday. One round of showers now and another later today with the possiblity of non severe thunderstorms.
Cloud cover today is our friend and will help to not destablize the atmosphere.
Hi JJ. Is the threat of sever weather this afternoon diminished?
Based on what I am seeing I would say the severe threat is extremely low.
Thanks, TK.
It looks like it wants to clear here in Sudbury. I looked at the satellite loop and at this point there isn’t much clearing to our west – but I wonder if that could change. In any case, after what happened in Stoughton the other day, I guess we always have to be on guard. Mother Nature does whatever she wants – even if all our fancy equipment, etc. says differently!
Ok – sun is out now, but definitely not clear out. It’s been good to have the rain – and I guess we could use more.
Good Morning π
Jimmy, as of last evening it appeared things could get a little interesting around here today. What’s changed since then? If something does get it’s act together, where would the greatest risk be?
Hi Shotime….. The greatest risk of severe weather today would be in parts of the Mid Atlantic. My thinking is that if a line of storms were to form they would weaken as they move across SNE and far western SNE would have a shot at seeing a strong storm or two. The cloud cover in place is not allowing the atmosphere to destablize and the other thing is the marine influence which tend to stablize the atmosphere and as we know thunderstorms hate airmasses that are stable.
Thank you!
another round of unsettled weather for thursday, friday and saturday of next week ? looks like we are going to be stuck in a pattern sadly
Not a washout by any stretch. Mostly diurnal activity with sun going to afternoon cumulus clouds with scattered showers/t’storms wed-saturday. The EURO actually holds off this activity until next weekend at the earliest. Temps look to also moderate into the 70s late in the week.
I heard on CBS News This Morning that carbon dioxide levels are the highest in human history and that lower Manhattan could be completely underwater someday.
manhattan, florida, cape cod, parts of the gulf coast. carribean islands all under water someday and yeah carbon dioxide levels are the highest that they have been in human history but not the planets history.
I’m thinking framingham will one day be beachfront property so have decided to stop my hunt for a beach house and just wait π
vicky billerica will be an island
Hahahahah…..well maybe that’s not funny ….hmmm
π
Boston certainly would be
They said back in the 1970s that Boston would be underwater by 2000… Still waiting. 2013 and the sea level has gone up an inch or two (more from erosion of coastal soil/rocks than anything else).
*tapping fingers and whistling “Stormy Weather”*
Don’t remember that. π
There are some alarmists out there (don’t think I am one), who are clearly overdoing it, but something is up.
There were a few PSA-type things on TV that talked about it. I also remember my brother pointing out the stories in the newspapers at the time. He saved all the weather-related stories in the 1970s in a scrap book.
No recollection of that either Hmmmm. And I agree something is up.
We keep getting bursts of strong wind and then it just settles to a gentle gust
same here vicki. recorded a 26mph gust
Been doing it all afternoon. Odd really because it comes out of the blue, bends the trees considerably and then its gone
Repost of today’s Accuweather Trivia Quiz.(For those who want to take a shot at it.)
Todayβs AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.
Which one is not true about lightning?
A. A leading cause of forest fires
B. Can strike 15 miles away from the storm
C. Enriches the soil with nitrogen
D. Strikes the highest/tallest spot
D
Severe threat for today moved more Northward than before, but still NOT
into our areas:
http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/outlook/day1otlk.html
No sunshine is helping us for sure. π
Still looks like it will rain.
Self destructing sunshine as I like to call it on days when a front is cutting through and a moist and unstable environment. Were seeing those breaks in parts of the Mid Atlantic. Here the clouds are our friend today.
Here is sort of a quiz that I am not sure I have the correct answer. I think I do, but I may be missing something.
Here goes:
How many Dams are on the Charles River as it Meanders some 80 Miles from its
source at Echo Lake in Hopkinton to Boston dropping 350 feet as it does so?
Over the years many more were constructed than what remains today, so we’re only look for how many remain today.
π
Bonus Question. Can you name ALL of the locations? π π
Oh my. Don’t you want to give is choices. Like A,B,C,D ;). I believe there is one in Boston and one maybe newton lower falls and is they something where the old norumbega (sp) used to be and one in wellesley and one maybe in natick. Or is that a waterfall. I have no idea as you can see but am interested in the answer. I believe it was originally called the Massachustts River after the Massasoit tribe. If I’m right do I get points π
New radar View, compliments of wxrisk.com

Not bad. π
As expected, very little rain in most of the region from this thing today.
I have had a whopping TRACE, maybe half a hundreth.
We have .07. TK I seem to remember when rain was mentioned on here a week or so ago you had your doubts.
And was it OS who said once we are in a dry pattern it seems to hold. Sure held this past week.
In Falmouth today. Just started pouring here. Some good returns about to come through here.
There are SOME areas that will get decent rain, as it is doing now across the Cape for example. But this is not a regionwide soaker.
Hello everyone!
I took this photo as the cold front was passing through Lyndon State College. Not much in the way of rain, but the cloud show made up for it.
https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/945696_479157165486364_161376514_n.jpg
Cool. Heavy thunderstorm with lots of lightning in Falmouth. Going to drive home soon.
I’m jealous – for the storm, not drive. Have a safe trip
Nice Scott!!

The correct answer is D, which almost everyone got right.
Todayβs Accuweather Trivia Quiz.
A backdoor cold front generally moves toward theβ¦
A. North
B. East
C. Southeast
D. Southwest
Answer later today.
Ugh the wording confuses me. I thought a backdoor came from one of those directions but toward?
Ill say D again ??
D.
D as well
D for me.
easy one – D
Steady rain here finally but very light. Not sure how much good it will do to raise the water table. Hopefully, if its going to rain it can rain a little harder. Looks as if the coast of New England has had some beneficial rain and is still getting it.
A Happy Mother’s Day to all the mom’s out there.
Happy Mothers Day!
Just put in a short update…
Feel free to repost the quiz there Longshot.
Happy Mother’s Day!
Hope you all have a wonderful day π
