The Week Ahead

11:02PM

So here’s the deal…

It was hot this weekend, and windy especially Sunday. There has not been much rain up to this point with the approach of a cold front, just some isolated to scattered showers and a few thunderstorms. This front will take its sweet time crossing southern New England Monday which will carry a very good chance of showers and a few thunderstorms. Drier air will build in with high pressure Tuesday into midweek. By late week we will have to watch some northward lift of tropical moisture and a low pressure area which may threaten some wet weather for southern New England. It’s too early to know how this will pan out.

Updated forecast for southeastern New England…

OVERNIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Isolated showers and thunderstorms. Lows in the 60s. Wind S to SW 10-20 MPH.

MONDAY: Mostly cloudy. Episodic showers and possible thunderstorms. Highs in the 70s. Wind SW 5-15 MPH shifting to NW during the day.

MONDAY NIGHT: Showers ending, clouds breaking then clearing from west to east. Lows in the 50s. Wind NW to W 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY: Partly cloudy. Highs 70-75. Wind NW 10-20 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 55. High 73.

THURSDAY: Partly sunny. Low 56. High 75.

FRIDAY: Variably cloudy. Showers at night. Low 58. High 74.

SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy. Showers in the morning. Low 56. High 70.

SUNDAY: Partly sunny. Low 58. High 76.

  1. Thanks TK! 🙂

I am looking forward to it cooling off a bit 🙂 But don’t get me wrong, I love my sunny weather 🙂

Nothing beats that feeling of taking a shower though…washing off that sunblock and bug spray…haha so refreshing.

  2. Thanks TK !

Decent thunder/lightning event around 5 to 6 am this morning, with plenty of tropical downpours.

  3. Thanks TK. We have rain – yay!! We’ve had .18 but as I have noticed with the rain of the past few weeks, the ground remains dry under larger plants (e.g., hydrangea, peonies, etc). The lawn and smaller plants and pots are getting a refreshing drink, however.

  4. Longshot – if I’m not mistaken, that bear was not far from you yesterday. And Tom, I saw those storms on the radar this morning and thought of you. Did you see the dugout jump right off the bench when it thundered at the Yankee/Sox game last night. One player looked as if he wanted to go under the bench. Can’t blame him. I don’t understand why they sit in an open dugout during a thunderstorm.

    1. Bc that’s where they wanna sit, even if its dangerous, I’m sure they know its dangerous to be outside during lightning, I’m also sure they have every right to go downstairs to the club house if they wanted

  5. Did anyone see the “Mile Wide Tornado” special on the Discovery Channel last
night at 10PM. Incredible show. There were video clips of that Moore, OK F5 monster
that I hadn’t seen. Unbelievable. The show was awesome.

If you have Comcast service, you should be able to view it on demand.

    😀

  6. Hey TK, So happy your high temperatures are so much higher
than Joe Joyce had last night.

He had 62 for Saturday and 58 for Sunday.

I’m sorry but for 6/9, a high of 58 is OUTRAGEOUS and I would protest
and make a sacrifice to the weather gods. 😀 😀 😀

Even though 70 is low, it is far better than 58.

  7. Hi Vicki, yes the bear that was shot was not far from here. Also sadly I live not so far from the pond in Wellesley where the little boy drowned last week. Very sad. Ugh!

  8. Another nice soaking, picked up .67 so far in north Attleboro and .63 in Wrentham, wonder why there’s not a fire danger today, it’s been so dry lol, have a great day everyone 🙂

    1. hehehehe – that’s what I mentioned to Tom earlier. It is funny but what in heavens name were they sitting out there for? And the announcer said they were shocked. Did he mean that literally. I notice a couple of the players grabbed their arms.

  9. Getting some sunshine now. Although the maps I look at might be old,
looks like the front is still to the West. Will verify shortly with 2PM OBS.

Wondering if the front itself may ignite some more showers and thunderstorms?

  10. .40 here – more than we have had in one day for a while so it was welcome rain. A good portion under the bigger bushes and plants is still dry.

    1. It appears all of MA except for a line from Newton due east and south to the ocean in both cases is abnormally dry still. Other than the showers on Fri night to Sat morning, I’m not seeing any help. TK are the showers to be sporadic or a pretty good watering? Or is it too soon to tell?

      1. Well we now know how to get rid of the abnormally dry conditions and no wonder they do not exist on the south shore 🙂

Kidding aside, sorry to hear that. Darn.

  11. I’m actually not rooting for much more rain, the turnpike lake is a lot higher now than this time last year, lake is about normal for June, I’ve only seen it dry up to about an acrea of water in middle about 25 yrs ago haven’t seen it close to that, right now that area has about 12-13 ft of water, anyways it’s different as you go into central mass 🙂

    1. How about you root for more water everyplace but yours. All of our rivers and streams are well below where they should be. What is a turnpike lake BTW

  12. We don’t need anymore rain.

I went fishing yesterday for the 1st time this year. Visited 5 different locations on the Charles River. The river is HIGH. WAY higher than normal for this time of year, an indication to me that all is fine with the amount of rainfall received in this area. 😀

    1. Sudbury river is lower than it should be. I wonder if the locations you visited were all in the area where the it is not considered abnormally dry.

        1. To this map I’m in a severe drought, not sure about these maps, I think if you have been dry and the lakes in your area r low then you need water but my area we’ve had enough for a few days and it look likely that more rain coming this weekend,

        2. Vicki, ALL within the area NOT considered adnormally
          DRY. 😀

I was in Dedham, Needham, Dover and Boston (West Roxbury)

Yes, Boston has nice access to the river way more upstream than the Esplanade area. We have a whole
section of the River where it comes out of Dedham
and passes between West Roxbury and Needham just
before it reaches the Newton’s. 😀

  13. Let’s clear a few things up here:

    * Yes, the overall area IS abnormally dry…. LONG TERM. Not short term. LONG TERM. Is it severe drought? Not even close. It’s not even considered a drought at the moment.

    * Those maps are made weekly, some bi-weekly, so when you see them, it may not take into account a very recent event.

    * If the rain late week lives up to full potential, it will indeed erase SOME of that abnormally dry area. But keep in mind, a return to a dry pattern beyond mid June into the heart of summer will put us right back to “abnormally dry” or even worse…

    * I have not mentioned fire danger in some time. That was back before we had full leafing. The topsoil moisture being up would also preclude some of the fire danger anyway.

Any questions, feel free to ask.

    1. I have no questions as I agree with your comments. We are simply not in a position to not want rain. No idea what prompted the fire danger comment.

I just stopped at a wonderful garden center (bringing our dog who is not feeling well home from vet) along the Sudbury river. its been there for decades. They flood nearly every spring. Not the past two and last year was worse than this. They are cautiously concerned as it is lower than they would like to see going into summer

        1. Thanks we hope he gets better too. He’ll be 13 in a a week. Lawn looks great still some weeds in front but great in back.

  14. The next 3 days look great with highs of 70-75 and lows of 50-55, then an early guess of widespread .50-1.00 inch of rain for Fri/Sat, then yes it’s 10 days out but the potential for more rain is there going out to mid June.

  15. What a glorious night. Temp 72 and 58 dP. Light breeze. It doesn’t get much better for spring

  16. I know you’re just having fun above Charlie – that’s all cool.

The clarification is just for informational purposes really.

B’s up 1-0 early. They have not lost on a Monday in a very very very long time.

    1. Ok now you are being downright greedy. I swear there is a faucet that turns on over n Attleboro 😉

      1. To illustrate the difference. Mac mowed lawn tonight and said it was not even wet. We had .40 overnight but the sun took a good portion back

      2. The only problem is it has caught me off guard and lost a bag of fertilizer ugh!! I really thought these monsoons were over

  17. Oh good. Locks to three hatches to the acquaduct just up the street from us were cut with an attempt to cut the fourth. Makes me comfy with our water supply. Charlie, I’m Moving in with you. We can catch water in a barrel in your yard. Do you have room for four adults, two kids and a dog?? 😉

      1. And it was only over Charlie. I watched it on radar. Absolutely amazing.

Psst I might be exaggerating a bit since it did move past Charlie bit it was an awfully small cell

        1. I know it doesnt have to do with this threat, but I did get to see the clip of the Yankees players reacting to the lightning/thunder…… Loved that the rain ended the game after 5 1/2 innings with the Sox ahead !

  18. It’s was amazing!! Almost three quarters of an inch .65, it poured for about 45 min’s, Vicki I really do wish this came over you

    1. Me too :). I wonder why the cells have all gone over your area and they have for a while. Interesting to say the very least

      1. I can verify. Over an inch now just today and most of that tonight. Side roads are flooded. It is a mess but finally stopped now.

  19. im just going to put this out there. the marshland behind my house is really high for this time of year ,i have actually found fish.(really good sign) point is . Lots of standing water in the marsh . i measured 3.8feet at my first measuring area. usually only about a half foot or less, area 2 ….5 feet and the actual river .and this is with the plants out and everything. so its wet around my house. also the old well that we have that we don’t use anymore is filled with water.

  20. I am not sure I am reading this right, but looks like some tropical-like moisture might reach us on the weekend. (Not an actual tropical storm, but sort of a disorganized low from the Gulf.)
