Heat Eases, Humidity Teases

8:52PM

The hot stretch that began Sunday will give way to slightly more moderate temperatures from mid week through the coming weekend as high pressure ridging, though still off the East Coast, is a bit weaker and battles a trough setting up in the Great Lakes. In addition to a little less heat for southern New England, this also means continued humidity and episodes of showers and thunderstorms, some producing tropical downpours. It will not rain all the time, but expect that many areas will get wet, sometimes quite wet, at times, during the next 5 days. Looking ahead a bit further, there are signs that retrogression (westward movement) and strengthening of high pressure off the East Coast will return our region to hotter weather with less numerous showers and storms as July begins early next week.

Forecast for southeastern New England (southern NH, eastern MA, and RI)…

TONIGHT: Showers and a few thunderstorms mainly in northern MA and southern NH early,Β  with fading showers south of Boston, otherwise variably cloudy, warm, and muggy. Lows from the middle 60s to lower 70s. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Variably cloudy with episodes of showers and thunderstorms midday on. Any storms may produce very heavy rain and gusty wind. Warm and humid. Highs in the 80s. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Partly to mostly cloudy. A few showers and thunderstorms possible. Warm and humid. Lows in the 60s. Wind light SW to variable.

THURSDAY: Variably cloudy. Episodes of showers favoring morning and midday, and a few additional showers or thunderstorms possible in the afternoon. Mild and muggy. Highs in the middle 70s to lower 80s. Wind variable to S 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY: Daily episodes of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Lows in the 60s. Highs upper 70s to middle 80s.

MONDAY & TUESDAY: Isolated showers and thunderstorms possible. Lows 65-75. Highs middle 80s to lower 90s, some cooler areas mainly South Coast.

      1. I’m fine thank you. How are you and it makes me feel better knowing you are taking care of TK. :). Enjoy the breeze. No one here will let me open windows and I’m tired of AC.

  1. 1. Thanks TK!

    2. LOVE the title of this one πŸ˜‰

    3. I love the outflow from the distant storms…I opened my window near my bed and it’s the most calming breeze. PERFECT to get the air moving in my room. I have the AC but that was on all day, and it’s almost TOO cold. So I turned it off. But now I found my happy medium. Mother nature’s fan πŸ˜€

    1. 4. You’re welcome!

      5. Thank you!

      6. Outflow. You hang around me too much. You’re learning about this stuff. πŸ˜›

      1. 7. I wouldn’t have known that if you didn’t just say it to me on Facebook πŸ˜‰ You make me look smart πŸ˜‰

        1. 8. Well now this “outflow” isn’t enough…and I have to shut my window and turn my AC back on. So much for that idea! HAHA!

    1. I have seen that name on the list before (non-retired EPac name). Cosme is male. πŸ™‚

  2. Have not posted in a while. But been reading the blog. Just want to say take care TK hope you feel better

  3. Open window

    The outflow
    from distant storms
    weaves through
    my bedroom’s
    humidity.
    I want to fall
    asleep sweating,
    listening to
    the breeze as
    its sound mimics
    the ocean,
    gently blowing
    in like tides.

    1. Saturday may end up a lot like today in terms of areal coverage, but with a more southwest to northeast trajectory of showers/storms.

  4. I know there’ll be more cloud cover today, a potential earlier onset of storms and a land breeze is not guaranteed at Logan all day, so 90F at Logan is not likely….

At the same time, as of only 7am, its already 77F !!

  5. And the beat goes on. Another humid day with the threat of storms some of which could be the strong to severe side. Don’t think this will be a widespread outbreak of severe weather.

    1. Just had two police cars fly by me on Landry Ave with their lights on. Wonder if they are heading to Aaron’s house….

      1. Must mean something, no?

He was seen last evening with a prominent defense lawyer.
Hmmm, think he knows he is about to be arrested? Me thinks so.

  6. I would like to preface this comment by saying I am not proficient in severe weather forecasting ……

Logan’s up to 79F, dewpoints are in the mid-upper 60s and Mass, CT and RI seem to be getting a decent amt of sun this early morning. I’m reading about a shortwave moving through, as well as a back door coldfront later today.

Are we sure a big thunderstorm event is not possible later on today in our region ?

    1. Onshore breeze that develops later today is likely to curb severe T-storm development closer to the coast; however, any storm that does develop prior to seabreeze could be strong to severe. Not to mention, storms should break out earlier today due to arrival of shortwave and with ample son a severe outbreak could occur early in the afternoon before a seabreeze develops.

  7. Tom,

I think you are onto something with High Temperatures today. When I awoke this
morning and checked the temperature, it was already 80F and this was 7:15 AM!!

Pretty decent amount of sunshine out there now. My thinking is Logan reaches
    or surpasses 90 today.

Regarding severe weather today, the SPC has us in the slight risk zone:

    1. From NWS this morning:

*** STRONG TO SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS EXPECTED FOR TODAY ***

ANOTHER ROUND OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED FOR TODAY. THESE STORMS WILL BE MORE WIDESPREAD AND STRONG/SEVERE COMPARED TO YESTERDAY FOR SEVERAL REASONS. FIRST IS THAT THERE IS A QUICK
MOVING SHORTWAVE CROSSING THE REGION EARLY THIS AFTERNOON PROVIDING SOME FORCING. THIS ALSO HAS INCREASED 0-6KM BULK SHEAR VALUES TO 30-35 KTS ALLOWING FOR UPDRAFTS TO SUSTAIN THEMSELVES. SECOND FOCUS IS ON THE SURFACE TROUGH THAT WILL BE PUSHING THROUGH THE REGION. BELIEVE THIS WILL BE THE FIRST FOCUS FOR THUNDERSTORM
DEVELOPMENT. THIRD AND LAST DIFFERENCE IS THAT THERE IS UPPER LEVEL SUPPORT…WITH A UPPER LEVEL JET MOVING ACROSS THE AREA. LIMITING FACTOR FOR THIS MORNING INTO THE EARLY AFTERNOON IS THE AMOUNT OF CLOUD DEBRIS ACROSS THE AREA. BOTH NAM AND GFS KEEP CAPE VALUES LOWER THEN THE PREVIOUS FEW DAYS. HOWEVER THERE IS STILL ENOUGH INSTABILITY FOR STORMS TO DEVELOP.

      πŸ˜€

  8. Aaron Hernandez just got cuffed and arrested. I am not sure the Pats will end up with a single, starting veteran TE for game 1.

    1. Thanks for the info.

Does anyone know the exact charge?
Obstruction of Justice? OR something More?

    2. From Weei:

Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was taken out of his North Attleboro home in handcuffs Wednesday morning and driven to the town’s police station.

Wearing a white T-shirt over his arms and red shorts, Hernandez showed no expression on his face as two men in suits accompanied him to a police cruiser parked in his driveway.

Hernandez has been investigated for his connection to the murder of 27-year-old Odin Lloyd early last week. Late last week it was widely reported that Hernandez would be arrested for obstruction of justice.

      1. There are no charges yet. Very early on, there was a hint of a possible obstruction of justice charge, but for now no charges.

        1. A person cannot be arrested without being charged
with something. That doesn’t make sense. πŸ˜€

    1. Winds are light around the area. So IF Boston doesn’t make 90 it will
be due to a sea breeze and not lack of sunshine. πŸ˜€

10AM winds at Blue Hill 4mph, variable
10AM wind at Norwood 4 mph from NW. πŸ˜€

  11. There is fuel for thunderstorm development and we got a trigger. The shear is up today where storms can organize. The past two days they were those pulse type storms where there was nothing then all of sudden bang. JKG’s I’ve noticed are lower than previous day. Today there between 1,000-2,000 which is certainly enough for strong to severe storm development.

    1. JJ, If a sea breeze gets going in Boston, will that dampen any severe weather at the coast even though the sun has been out most of the morning?
What did you give today on your storm scale? Sorry if already missed your post with that info. Thanks πŸ™‚

      1. If the wind comes in from off the water that should stablize the atmosphere. As we know thunderstorms hate
stable air. They like that moist unstable air where they have the opportunity to grow and develop.
I am going with a 2 today since there is that threat of some severe weather. If it looks like more of a widespread
severe weather threat develops I will raise to a 3. Don’t see a 4 since there is no threat for tornadoes with the setup
        we have.

    1. From WEEI:

The Patriots announced Wednesday morning, shortly after Aaron Hernandez was arrested at his North Attleboro home, that they have released the tight end.

      The statement reads:

β€œA young man was murdered last week and we extend our sympathies to the family and friends who mourn his loss. Words cannot express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our players was arrested as a result of this investigation. We realize that law enforcement investigations into this matter are ongoing. We support their efforts and respect the process. At this time, we believe this transaction is simply the right thing to do.”

Hernandez played three seasons in New England after being selected in the fourth round of the 2010 draft out of Florida. The Connecticut native signed a seven-year, $41 million contract before last season.

Hernandez finishes his Patriots career with 175 receptions for 1,956 yards and 18 touchdowns in 38 games. His best season was 2011, when he made 79 catches for 910 yards and seven touchdowns in 14 games.

  12. Old Salty on days like today I call this self destructing sunshine. This is very unstable atmosphere. Here where I am in CT the sun has gone from shining bright to more filtered. Certainly more sunshine than was forecasted today.

Calm at 11AM. That SPELLS SEA BREEZE which will KILL any storms
Near the coast. We shall see. Perhaps the West wind will kick up?

  14. Towering cumulus everywhere. Its gotten real warm this morning. Radar looks to be activating, Mass border points south. Wonder where this event is headed ……

    1. These clouds will help to stabilize the atmosphere and keep storms in check. We need more daytime heating as the short wave approaches. Also, weak seabreeze is to develop shortly. The timing of everything is off and I’d be suprised to see any widespread severe weather today.

  15. Weak, pulsated storms developing mainly north of the pike. Nothing impressive as of this hour.

    1. I still think juicy storms get cranking later.
These storms are just pulsing storms due to the heating.
When we get more lift a little later, watch out.
      πŸ˜€

  16. They have had their share of storms to our north and in NY the past few days. Time to share πŸ™‚

      1. I was reading your account of it while it happened and wishing we were at Humarock πŸ˜‰

  17. Cloud over will keep severe weather to a minimum, it looks like some light rain with embedded heavier showers, top layer is very dry but down about 1-2 inches is suprisly still somewhat moist

  18. From NWS:

THE SRN HALF OF THE REGION IS A DIFFERENT STORY. THERE HAS STILL
BEEN A FAIR AMOUNT OF HAZY SUNSHINE THROUGH MOST OF THE DAY TODAY
WITH TEMPS HOLDING IN THE MID 80S AND DWPTS IN THE MID TO UPPER
60S. WV IMAGERY SHOWS A SHARPENING SHORTWAVE DIVING THROUGH
CENTRAL NY WHICH SHOULD AT LEAST HELP PROVIDE A FOCUS FOR
-SHRA/T-STORM DEVELOPMENT INTO THE AFTERNOON HOURS. WILL STILL
NEED TO WATCH THIS AREA ESPECIALLY AS SHEAR HAS BEEN INCREASING
THROUGH THE DAY AS WELL. STORMS ARE LIKELY TO AT LEAST BEGIN TO
DEVELOP BY LATE AFTERNOON. WILL NEED TO WATCH ERN CT/RI AND SE
MASS ESPECIALLY WHERE THE BULK OF SUNSHINE HAS BEEN. THE SEA
BREEZE FRONT MAY ALSO CONTINUE TO PROVIDE A FOCUS FOR AFTERNOON
CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT IN THIS AREA AS WELL.

Sun has been in and out here since heavy shower in the NOON hour.

  19. Watch the radar for storms just south of Marshfield, westward to perhaps Providence.

Just outh of overhead, there is a line of monsterous, towering cumulus ready to go. The tops of some of them are blowing off. Further, our wind just went light east and the air temp has dropped into the low-mid 70s.

  20. What a day for Aaron Hernandez. Charged with murder; denied bail; and released by the Pats. Another sports player that had it all.

    1. Holy Crap. You know my wife and I were talking at lunch and we both came
to the conclusion that he WOULD be charged with murder.

What a complete idiot and moron to throw away all that he has.

      What a crying shame.

      1. I dont know if it means I’m old or its an indictment on our society, but nothing surprises me anymore.

  21. Sun has been out here about 2/3 of the time. Now solid overcast. 80 with 67 dp and wind gusting occasionally to low teens out of the w/sw

  22. Flood Watches up for southern four counties of CT Thurs PM to Fri PM. I would not be surprised to see those expanded across SNE. I would not rule out strong a locally severe storm during that timeframe but I think were looking at more of a heavy rain threat from thunderstorms than a severe weather threat.

  23. Nothing surprised me either Tom. But in all fairness what makes this country great is that he will have his chance to prove his innocence. Now that’s if you believe our justice system is fair or not, otherwise that’s another conversation πŸ™‚

  24. I am not surprised. With all this humidity in the air heavy downpours are likely and if you get thunderstorms that train over the same area that is not a good situation.

  25. When I think of it, it was probably within a space of 6 hours that Hernandez was arrested, charged with murder, denied bail, jailed, and dropped from the Pats. Sometimes we don’t really know what a “bad day” means.

    1. That puts things in perspective. My SIL said the evidence against him is incredible and he sure did a bad job of covering anything up. That of course is decided in court as it should be. It almost seems as if the pats let him go before arrest but then things happened awfully fast as you said. He just signed a what 40mm contract. Tom guess I am old as I’m surprised more and more every day. Such a tragedy.

  26. Not a good set-up for severe today. Not sure what NWS was thinking. But hey…

Plenty of downpours but limited to certain areas. I had a good one here around 4PM but no thunder. The last of it is moving through coastal areas now and tonight we get a wind shift and a cooler push of air from the north across southern NH and eastern MA. May make it a bit further south as well. This protects the region from severe tomorrow during the day, but at night we may get into a ribbon of heavy rain. We have to watch 2 areas, an east-west oriented band in the evening with a pseudo warm front, and then a more conventional north-south oriented band coming from the west later at night, after midnight, ending by late morning or noon on Friday.

The Euro is coming around to mine and the GFS’s idea of earlier retrogression and a return to HHH during the first several days of July. Won’t be storm-threat-free, but certainly less than we have seen the last few days and the next few upcoming.

    1. Pete Bouchard is advertising widespread, organized rain event on Monday per his 7 day. ???

      1. One of the model runs had it. Not enough consistency for me to go that route. Though I won’t scoff at his choice. I respect his forecast. It’s up to the reader to know that 4 days away in this type of pattern there is plenty of time for things to shift and change from what computers are telling us.

If I have to make a call for Monday right now, I say isolated to scattered tropical showers/storms instead of an all day organized rain. We’d have to get awfully unlucky and into a 50-100 mile wide tropical conveyor belt. Not betting on it. πŸ™‚

  27. An editorial ……

In my opinion, BZ just doesnt get, while ch 5 does. Its no wonder ch. 5 is always atop the ratings.

I have nothing against Eric Fisher, evidently joining in as chief meteorologist, Todd going back to mornings, Barry to weekend mornings and Joe weekend nights….

Hello ch 4, can you go a few years without changes, a chance for viewers to make a connection with your on air personalities.

Barry would be to ch 4 what Harvey is to ch 5. The long experienced, New Englander, the highest level forecaster, the one that people trust. Ch 5 gives that person to you, in prime time, ch 4 continually runs away from him. And by the way, I also thought Todd has been carving his own niche as a very dependable evening, chief meteorologist.

Well, save for Saturday and Sunday mornings, ch 4 will be losing my viewership. I guess I’ll just be switching back and forth btwn 5 and 7 now during the workweek. πŸ™‚

    1. I really got comfortable with Todd and am sorry to hear that. I love Barry also. 4 lost me a while ago as a viewer and I switched to 7 but they did the same thing with their morning anchor team and I have a serious problem with the new anchor since she murders the kings English. Petty I know but its my moms fault and I can’t wake up correcting a persons English. :)).

Maybe ill try 5 too but I really enjoy JR and Pete. In the end you are right..the stations do not have a clue what their viewers want. Makes no sense

    2. Barry should have the Prime Time job, Period. No question about it.
      Channel 4 execs are FOOLISH!!!!!!!!!!!

      Re: Todd
I think he is very personable and likable, however, regarding his forecasting skills? well, Let’s just say he had trouble forecasting high temperatures and also NEVER apologized for a blown forecast or explained what happened. πŸ˜€

  28. Today’s forecast threat was quite a BUST.

Arod was right on the money. Nice job.

    πŸ˜€

    1. As I sit here typing I am feeling a cooling sea breeze drifting in through the open window. πŸ˜€

            1. Very funny all.

              Btw, awoke this morning FREEZING!!

What FICKLE weather we have around here. IT just can’t make up its mind. πŸ˜€

  29. TK whats up with all the wet weather in the noaa forcast. saying about 1-2 inches of rain is possible. where did this come from.

    1. Vicki, I heard about this the other day. The funny thing is my mother mentioned at my daughters birthday party on June 15th that they had a tsunami in Falmouth harbor a few days before and the water rose 2 ft. I chuckled, but I guess she was right!

  30. From NWS:

BACK DOOR COLD FRONT STILL IS TRYING TO EDGE INTO
SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND EARLY THIS MORNING. APPEARS THAT IT IS
CURRENTLY LOCATED OVER SOUTHERN MAINE. REGARDLESS EASTERLY FLOW WILL STILL DOMINATE ACROSS MUCH OF THE AREA ALLOWING FOR LOW CLOUDS AND PATCHY DENSE FOG TO PERSIST EARLY THIS MORNING.

Oh, Really? What was that EAST WIND all night long? We DON’T get a sea breeze
at night, therefore that East wind MEANS the front has past our area.

What are people smoking these days?

    1. I was thinking the same thing. In this pattern one of the only ways to get an east wind at night without the frontal passage is to have temporary outflow from passing storms north and east of the region (say, off the NH or ME coast). The took place last evening but it wouldn’t have lasted this long. There is clearly a boundary located southwest of the Boston area.

  31. Regarding changes to WBZ weather team, I have seen Eric Fisher on TWC and don’t have any particular opinions on him at this point. I still turn to WBZ for the weather – however I feel that Barry deserves to be Chief Meteorologist – because he is really good.

I rarely watch Ch. 5 or Ch. 7 weather. My go-to for the weather is WBZ and NECN, as I like Matt Noyes and the weather team on NECN.

Of course, I always check to see what TK has to say before I check anything else! πŸ™‚

    1. Rainshine,

Agree with your Barry assessment. Those BX people are NUTS
for not having Barry on at prime time. What are they thinking?

Who is Eric Fisher? and when does he start?

We usually watch channel 4 because my wife likes the news on that station, however, during major weather events, I ALWAYS catch Harvey on channel 5 and will of course check out Matt Noyes on NECN. NEVER watch 7 as I think,
well I’ll leave that alone. πŸ˜€

  32. I’m not really sure what’s going on at Ch 4. Even my inside contact seems a little perplexed…

    Anyway, blog is updated!
