  1. good morning everyone…..looking forward to a bright day.

    **warning****gardening post**

I Bring this up because I put them in larger pots yesterday and they’re cool and I’m excited to see how much I’ve been able to get them to grow in our climate.

There’s a really neat fan palm that is cold hardy and I’ve been nurturing them for about five years from a single leaf pinnate frond and now one of them has about a 6″ trunk and the fans are getting bigger with each new spear. I keep them in my unheated, southern exposure, glassed porch over the winter and they survive no problem. In January & February, I’ll put a very small electric heater in just to take the edge off at night but they still survive sub-freezing because the room will heat up on its own to maybe forty when the sun is out.

Bottom line……they’re cool if you like fan palms and they can handle the cold. I think there are growers out there as far north as Rhode Island that are able to sustain them outside with minimal protection year round. I’m in USDA zone 5b so I wouldn’t attempt outdoors year round. Even greater success might be achieved for someone say in Chatham with southern exposure and minimal protection.

There are a few other cold species fan palms that are really neat too but this particular species seems to be the hardiest. Some are even grown outdoors in British Columbia! (and Scotland too thanks to the Gulf Stream)

They look great outside on the patio from April into November. Something you don’t see around here in any nursery or chain store.

    Check them out! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trachycarpus_takil

  2. I have radishes break through the ground yesterday and they are just planted in the garden. I bet the pees will be coming through today and I’m in Weymouth. Come on spring!

  3. hahahahahaha bears – beers; pees – peas!

Many of my daffodils are fully open this morning. It will be nice to have home grown fresh flowers in the house.

Beautiful bright blue, clear sky but still quite windy.

    1. Vicki, while my crocuses are absolutely stunning today, the daffodils and jonquils still have a ways to go, but should come out this week. I believe that there is a “growing” lag between inland and coastal areas in the spring. I have noticed for instance, when I watch the Boston Marathon on TV during some years the trees are out somewhat at the starting line, but when I look out my window here in Boston, little or nothing just yet.

  4. The wind is gusting out there today Vicki as you pointed out but at least the sun is out. It becomes a bit unsettled early this week with a round of showers with the warm front on Monday and then with the cold front on Tuesday. I would not rule out a rumble of thunder with the passage of the cold front so with that I am giving a 1 on the thunderstorm index but thankfully this front will not spark severe weather here like it will in the Midwest and Southern states.

    1. I am sorry JJ…..I should have read your post first, which answers my question below. I sometimes do not do a good job of reading previous posts first.

  5. Intense looking batch of T’Storms crossing Lake Michigan. Very active warmfront, wonder if the warm front has the potential to kick off some convection tomorrow in New England or is it heading into a more stable region ?

  6. Some hail reports up in Wisconsin today and I think it just the beginning of what could be a good number of severe weather reports across the Midwest and South today and tomorrow.

  7. We were out today and got a chance to do some long walks – getting in shape for hopefully some hiking come the spring and summer. The sky has been a beautiful blue and I saw just one cloud. But it was windy which added some chill to the air. There are some crocuses in front of our house but they reached a point and haven’t grown anymore. I hope the warmer spring rains will perk them up. The Weather Channel is really gearing up for some severe weather for a good part of the mid-west and south and eventually the mid-Atlantic. There has been some activity but I haven’t seen anything that bad yet. I wonder what Tues. will bring for us – ‘though I don’t think we will get anything that bad – as JJ says – and he is usually right! 🙂 I appreciate his thunderstorm indexes.

  8. Good evening everybody- What a nice Sunday in Pembroke today, one of those days you would like to bottle up. Did some yard work today and just chilled out. I cooked an awesome pork roast on the grill. For those who have not cooked a roast on the grill you got to try it. Just get a roast rack and line with foil, it will be the best roast you ever had, juicy and so much flavor. Hope the week ahead is not to wet, as I head back to work tommorow and I work outside. The blog seems quiet today as I guess everyone is out enjoying the nice day. Will check back later.

  9. I dont know a lot about severe weather…….but, I just get the feeling that the radars are about to light up in the Central Plains over the next few hours. Maybe Nebraska and Oklahoma and Missouri…………Could it snow Friday ? Interesting discussion on NWS website.

    1. I can see what they mean about Friday. I’m not convinced we don’t get a shot of wet snow inland Wednesday night from a strong shortwave passing by.

  10. Good evening from Orlando!! So far so good here, have a front coming on Tuesday that is expected to move through quickly but hoping to see a couple boomers! Btw 9 reported tornados in the TPA area on Thursday.

    1. Glad to hear the weather has been good, nice day up here as well. If your hitting the attractions in Orlando, hopefully the crowds have not been too bad.
