Variety Pack

5:55PM

Several different kinds of weather will be observed around southeastern New England in the days ahead. High pressure cresting over the region will bring a cold night tonight, though the temperature fall will be capped by clouds increasing across the sky. These clouds may release a few sprinkles of rain or even snow in the area Wednesday morning, but have no worry. This will not hang around as it is just a quick-passing disturbance. By Wednesday night, it will have cleared again (with nice conditions for Game 6 of the World Series at Fenway Park), but that won’t last, because clouds will roll right back in on Thursday as a warm front approaches the region. The question becomes: Will it rain on trick-or-treat? For most of the region, although there is a chance of some light rain briefly passing through, it may remain largely rain-free during the early evening hours, with main shower activity holding off until very late at night, especially the further south and east you are. Warmer air will flood into the region Thursday night and Friday, but accompanied by showers, making the late-season warmth less enjoyable. That said, any rainfall is welcomed as we have been quite dry.

Looking into the weekend, the trough bringing the unsettled weather Thursday-Friday will be slow to exit, so we will see lots of clouds and a continued shower threat on Saturday, though it will remain mild. Sunday should be chilly and windy but drier as things shift to the east and a strengthening northwest wind takes over. EarlyΒ  next week looks tranquil as high pressure dominates.

Updated forecast for southeastern New England…

  1. Thanks TK! πŸ™‚

Now what is this about yet another shakeup at the WBZ WX Office? Is Joe Joyce really leaving and then two new mets (Matt Noyes from NECN and Danielle from Ch. 5) coming to WBZ?? Not to mention what will become of Barry?

      1. I did the same with whdh. They really could care less about employees or viewers. I just hope all is ok with Barry and feel very badly for Joe

        1. I’m committed to channel 5 so I really don’t watch the Other mets. I do however listen to bz while commuting to and from work.

            1. That will be a sad day when the best tv met going today retires. I doubt mike would take over and don’t see Cindy doing it. But those two could do it.

    1. I will certainly miss Joe Joyce! I’m a big fan of Joe’s, so this is very sad news for me πŸ™

      1. He said on FB that he’d just been in a bad car accident (caused by drunk driver) and he lost his dad last week. Do you think BZ could have timed his leaving with a bit of a heart? I thought my opinion of corporate American was already as low as it could get until I read that. So very sad for him.

  2. Thanks tk. Hoping that rain stays away for the kids. Although I was rooting for game seven because I’m off on Friday and full house on Thursday night, I am rooting this series ends tomorrow. I think it does and tomorrow will be a huge night for sox fans and history. Sox have the momentum now. Key chances for a possible win. Momentum, hot pitcher on the mound, back home after a long road trip, your field and your yard and the best fans around spells a damn good shot too seal the deal. Go sox.

      1. Mac said they are having plane problems. I feel very badly for them. I know darn well we would be upset if it were our team.

We only truly win if we play a team at its best. I hope they get here, rest as they should and are in full swing

  3. Thanks TK !

Long range patterns just seem to indicate a repetitive pattern over and over and over …… Cool high pressure that comes in from the Great Lakes, that then retreats as a low passes west of our region, then is followed by a cool surge, high pressure coming in from the Great Lakes ……..

  4. Thanks TK.
UGH since that is a pattern that favors inside runners and not what you want to see in the winter if you are like me and a snowlover.

    1. It will snow but I am not liking the pattern setting up this fall. Sometimes you get clues with the way the pattern sets up in the fall on what could happen during the upcoming winter.

          1. Probably November will give us the clues we need. IIRC November 2011 for example was quite mild after the Halloween snowstorm.

            1. Yes it was and that storm changed the pattern and we ended up with a mild rest of the fall and that pattern lasted right through the winter with mild temps and below normal snowfall.

  5. Remember a while ago the Euro monthlies had been predicting a long term warm/dry pattern that could last into the start of 2014?

  6. I went to the hardware store today to buy some duct tape…and the snow shovels were already lined up outside. πŸ˜‰

    1. Yeah it’s a money thing for preparedness, when I was in my early 20’s I worked part time at structure clothes at the mall, and it was crazy, as soon as Christmas is over and by mid Jan they have all the spring clothes out for sale before the end of Jan, it was the same thing in mid June when they began the change to spring, it seems to always be a few months ahead, by the end of Jan that same store will probably have rakes, brooms in those spots, have a great night πŸ™‚

  7. I’ve seen mets completely wrong on winter predictions, and rarely r they close over a 10 yr period, I think the fall pattern that we are in goes into Dec hence no snow till then, the longer we go with no snow, the shorter winter feels IMO, bc I find that if it snows in late jan or Feb the snow melts quick, if it snows a lot starting in early mid Dec it makes for a much longer winter, after thanksgiving the clock begins to tick πŸ™‚

  8. Has St Louis left yet?

I’m not feeling any snow in November. Darn. I’m going to have to dig out those snow socks.

  9. Charlie, it rarely snows in Nov in SNE, so saying it won’t snow doesn’t hold any weight for winter.

JJ and anyone else reading, I gtd we will have a negative nao for most of winter.

  10. Boston’s average first 1 inch of snow is December 12. Lack of measurable snow in November is not uncommon for the city. The suburbs often see at least their first coatings of snow in November (sometimes minor accumulations). And of course you have anomalies like November 11 1987 — a cold and snowy Veterans Day. Dry powdery snow at that. Several inches, even in Boston (over 5 inches).

    1. The Portland Gale snowstorm on November 27, 1898 Boston received 12″ of snow…still a record for that month, of course likely never to be reached.

      1. Huge storm, Philip. Excellent point. We didnt have that much for thanksgiving 1990 if I recall the year but it was darned near as much. I have a great book on the Portland gale and how warnings were ignored

    2. 1987 was an odd year with big snow only 2 days before may….used to snow in nov more than now πŸ˜‰

  11. Today: Snowing just a tiny amount in the Berkshires? Cool but nice today. Maybe mid 50’s, but more likely low 50’s.

Tonight: Very cool for game, and their are still dugout tickets available for $9,000+.

Trick or treat evening: A little rain? I think so. But warmer than tonight.

    1. But clearing is soon coming just in time for the game of a lifetime. I think sox will be huge tonight. I can’t stop thinking about it.

  12. I loved taking the dog out early. It had just started to rain and the leaves smelled great. I can’t say as I’ve ever minded this weather in autumn!

    1. I know. Question if in which case I believe they win what victory means more. The first one after a long drought or winning it at home where that has not been done since 1918, tough one.

  13. I can’t wait for the game tonight also! Bringing the boys to Trunk or Treat at our church and then rushing home to see the game. Go Sox!

  14. Does anyone know when the last Boston sports team clinched a championship on their home grounds? Was it one of the Celtics teams in the 80’s?

    1. I know sox not since 1918 – year Williams was born. He was less than a month old. After that I’m not saying one more word πŸ™‚

    1. Yup, u are absolutely right Scott. For some reason I don’t remember the clinching game in Boston, thought the Lakers had home court advantage.

  15. If they win tonight I’ll be up all night watching post coverage and watching the city go nuts. Go sox you can do it boston strong Red Sox style. They dedicated there season to the marathon victims, classy team to say the least.

  16. The Red Sox won at home in 1918…also in six games. πŸ˜‰

They also won at home in 1903, 1912, and 1916. In 1915 it was on the road in Philly.

    1. Had a Clnt meeting all day today in Boston. I have been concentrating all night….looks like it is working!

  17. Fenway is a rocking! I bet Hadi and OS can hear the roar from their houses! Crowd at Gillette should take a hint, thats how u cheer ur team on. Go Sox!

      1. I’d stay up Vicki as its just getting started. When Ortiz finally gets to hit lookout. Wild night ahead. Where the hell are you oldsalty.

        1. I had planned to stay up. Work hadn’t allowed it past couple of days but will be ok tonight. Mac may not make it. He has to be up at 4:30 πŸ™

            1. I don’t think he’s listening. He’s not a baseball fan having grown up outside the states. Now if it were a golf match…..

  18. I knew this would happen. Wacha has been terrific but this stage was too big for a rookie. No way the sox were going to lose this game.

    1. No way hadi. I’ve felt it all day. Now I want to see double digits. This is really a fun game to watch after some tough games. Boston is just going to go nuts in about an hour. No way they loose this.

  19. Well Mac went to sleep and on his way out of room asked if it was 13th or 14th hole. Sighhhhh. Now you are all stuck with me πŸ˜‰

          1. Me too. But can sleep till about 6:30 tomorrow so I’m good. I figured out of you have kaluah its like having coffee πŸ˜‰

            1. Good point but you are not as old as methuselah ….can you start singing please. Or tossing things at me. My eyes seem to have a mind of their own and want to keep closing

  20. Looking great for the Sox. If they finish this off I hope that Boston sets a great example of how to party without trouble!

Hoping to update the blog by night’s end, but I’m going to focus on the rest of the game on a big screen high def TV, but with the sound of the radio broadcast. πŸ™‚

    1. No updating. Just concentrating πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‰ VERY HARD concentrating. Never count chicks….you know the saying.

      1. Funny, there’s a CD in front of me by The Fools that contains a song about chicks in a hen house, and another song about the Sox winning the world series. πŸ˜›

  21. 3 outs to to go!!!

Love my Boston sports teams, but our fans are not the best. Too many colleague kids with too much booze and too many drunk local fans.

  22. Now I’m going to sleep and I hope beyond hope that when I wake up I find our fans celebrated with dignity. Sleep well all.

  23. β™₯BOSTON RED SOXβ™₯

A high wind watch has been posted for tonight – SOUTHEASTERN MASSACHUSETTS & COASTAL RI INCLUDING THE METRO REGIONS OF PROVIDENCE & BOSTON

    EARLY NEXT WEEK….
…A FEW MODELS ARE TRYING TO INDICATE A PATTERN
CHANGE BY THE THURSDAY-SATURDAY TIMEFRAME…HOWEVER NOT READY TO JUMP ON BOARD JUST YET.
Can anyone elaborate further on this, please?

  24. When the Red Sox won in 1918, it was in six games AND on a Wednesday. πŸ™‚

Wednesday September 11 to be exact…9/11.

  25. Nice day today. Another World Series Championship!!!!

NWS had a 42 for a high temp for Tuesday. They are buying into something.

Still have not looked at a weather map in over 2 weeks. Crazy around here!

    πŸ˜€

      1. Sure they will. πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

Should be much better from here on out.

Just went live on this Monday with “Hoteling” or as some people call it, “Hot-Desking”. We’re closing a satellite office and there
is not enough space at the main office for everyone. Therefore,
Many users will be working partially in the field. We deployed 80 new top of the line Windows 8 Lap Tops with 80 Sumsung Android Smart phones with Tethering and mobile hot spots for internet connectivity for our web based applications and telephone connectivity to the office. IF I call one of their
extensions it rings their cell phone. They also get Netextender
which allows them to access the network drives at the office, including the office Intranet. They also get Anymeeting software on their laptop to be able to attend meeting remotely.
Then there is the scheduling software so they can reserve their
work space for the times they will be in the office. From their phones, they get office email, calendar and office voice mail.

I had to check out all of this stuff and order it. Then I had to
do all of the staff training and implement all of this stuff (Fortunately I have the help of ONE associate who works for me).

The dust is finally settling and all is going quite well so far.

A few glitches to iron out.

BUT at least today, I feel that I can breath. πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

WINTER is COMING……………………. If not this year, then next. πŸ˜€

        1. Oh my – no wonder you have not been here – but you sure are on the leading edge for this type of remote office/access. Do you mind if I share what you did with my business associate. He won’t know name or anything – just the process you describe.

Also, I notice you use the Samsung. Do you mind if I ask why? Are you on FB? That way I wouldn’t bother everyone here with non weather questions. This stuff fascinates me.

Thanks OS and very happy for you that you are on the down side of getting this accomplished

          1. BTW – everyone might be very sorry Hadi suggested I get on FB. πŸ™‚ I suspect you have all noticed I tend to run with things once I get hold of them !!

              1. Awwww thanks, Sue. I am happy to have you and everyone here as friends! I told Hadi I can’t wait until Christmas so everyone can post their celebrations and decorations. We all talk about them and now we can see them.

          2. Sure Vicki No problem.

            Re: Samsung (Galaxy Rugby Pro)

            Easy,
            We got a great deal.
They are rugged for in the field use
They operate with Android, which was needed
for the special phone app we running on them

            1. Thank you OS. Do you mind if I check in with you from time to time to see how it’s going and how folks are adapting to working remotely? We have a lot of clients considering moving to remote access for some employees and it’s great to have first hand feedback.

              1. Absolutely. I’d be more than happy to update you. Feel free to ask any questions.

                So far, so good.

        2. Oldsalty good thing all this extra work didn’t happen over the winter when we really need you on here. Sounds like your’e doing a great job. Wind has been picking up down here.

    1. Embarrassed to say but I slept till 10:30 today. Early start both Tuesday and Wednesday and of course up till 1am this morning I was beat.

      1. For some reason, my new time to wake up is 4:30. And apparently it makes not one bit of difference if I go to bed at 10:30 or 12:30. Arghhh

        1. No north. I had put in for today and tomorrow vacation days. I was going to work 1/2 day today but I said why bother and changed it back yesterday, so off till Monday. We have my sons class coming over with there parents to eat and trick or treat and my moms coming tonight till Saturday.

  26. Congrats to the Redsox!! Cloudy here and mildish, going to the Patriot/Steeler game this Sunday against the rosthlisberger. Go Patriots!! Good day everyone!!

    1. Ugh, well, better than last week. We finally got a gas meter and have heat, but now the new water heater has a faulty gas valve and needs to be replaced. Thankfully they kept the old water heater hooked up but its on its last leg. The waiting game continues. Now in the process of re-doing the attic insulation as the previous owner had basically 1 inch of insulation up there. Its amazing how that stuff works. I have half the attic done so far with a total of R-49 and i notice a huge different in how that section of the house retains the heat.

        1. Thanks North, I hope so too!

I miss trick or treating in North Attleboro. I didnt live in the Cliffs but I had a bunch of friends up there and my parents would drop me off there and we would try and hit up every house, we used to get soooo much candy! πŸ™‚

          1. Lol. My daughter told me are not welcome to go with her tonight. She is going with her friends :(. Growing up too fast. They are hoping for king size candy bars.

  27. Does it seem like rain is going to move in a little quicker? Omg my won who is 4 might lose his marbles if we can’t go out πŸ™‚

    1. Hadi I was just looking at the radar and was coming here to ask what’s happening. It is quite gloomy out (no pun intended). And I currently have two mothers (one 27 and one 33) who are going to lose their marbles if their kids can’t go out and enjoy trick or treating – accompanying their 6 and 4 year old who will do the same.

Please say it ain’t so ???

        1. Much darker here than it has been. That blob on the radar is awfully close to hold off until 9. Looking to head north of you but maybe not north of enough people.

  28. More rain and earlier. Maybe we can get this first batch out of the way and there will be less coverage in a couple hours. Upstream does not look too promising though…

At least it’s MILD. Finally scoured out that chilly air.

    Blog is updated!

  29. The pattern change alluded to is a switch to warm and continued dry, much like the Euro monthlies said would happen in November when they ran several weeks ago.
