Heading Back To The Other Side

9:46PM

The summer preview is over.  The warmth of Monday and Tuesday is about to be history. Monday was a generally nice day despite plentiful cloudiness, and Tuesday was mainly cloudy and showery, with heavier showers moving in toward the end of the day for most locations. The problem with both days were strong and gusty southwest to south winds, which resulted in scattered damage and power outages.

A cold front is moving west to east through the region this evening and moisture will continue to flow northward along it, continuing the rain for most areas into the overnight hours. But as cold air works in, we’ll see a mix/change to sleet/snow from west to east, making it just about into the Boston area before the precipitation exits before the line really makes it any further to the southeast. Areas along and west of I-95 may see a coating to locally 1 inch of snow (especially higher elevations). All of this will clear offshore by dawn on Wednesday, which will turn out bright, cool, and windy. High pressure building in will make for a cold Wednesday night / Thursday morning as winds drop off under a clear sky. Thursday will continue to be cool, though the sun will feel nice, since there will be less wind. High pressure will hang on Friday which will start sunny but it will start to lose grip later in the day when clouds begin to increase.

Looking ahead to the weekend, which includes Easter for many, and is a long weekend as well for some as Monday is Patriots Day or Marathon Monday, it looks like low pressure will pass through the region Saturday with some wet weather, and may be fast enough that we start to clear late. Sunday looks mostly fair but some gusty wind and areas of clouds may be a factor as low pressure intensifies while moving away and cold air aloft allows clouds to pop up. Monday should start sunny but end with increasing clouds as high pressure tries to hold off approaching low pressure. That area of low pressure will get closer Tuesday which should turn cloudy with eventual wet weather arriving.

Forecast for southeastern New England…

  1. Your title reminds me of Shel Silverstein’s “Where the Sidewalk Ends” because we talked about that in poetry class today. 😛

My only complaint about the wind on Monday was that it blew lots of sand into my eyes! But other than that…the sun was really nice. And I loved the rain today. 🙂

      1. And of course don’t forget…

“Oh, I’m lookin’ for my missin’ piece
I’m lookin’ for my missin’ piece
        Hi-dee-ho, here I go
        lookin’ for my missin’ piece”

  2. Snowing pretty good in Manchester, CT and now accumulating on colder surfaces. Still quite a bit of heavier precip yet to come in from the southwest. Could be a lot whiter here in the morning than I expected!

  3. 28 degrees with moderate to heavy wind blown snow in Coventry CT. Everything is covered with about an inch on the ground so far. Just drove back home from Manchester and roads were treacherous! Feels and looks like the dead of winter on April 16, a day after it was nearly 80….gotta love it!

  4. Sitting in a meeting in Belgium thought I would check the weather back home, wow what a surprise! Looks like heavy snow in Andover!
    Tom

  5. Grass coated with white here in Newton. Walkways look icy. About 30 degrees colder this morning than yesterday morning. Ugh!!

  6. What a nice day. Below freezing, snow on the ground, cutting wind. What more could we ask for.

  7. Heavy sleet in pembroke this morning with a good cover on cars, grass and even roads. Low 40 s today and boston about 30 degrees tonight.

  8. Waking up to the ground coated with snow. Two years ago today parts of CT were in the low 90s today were going to be in the mid 40s.
Happy Birthday to your son John.

  9. Cars had about a solid inch of PITA snow on it…roads mostly clear but everything else covered.

  10. Coated ground here, I give up !!!!!

    Any reports from North Attleboro ? 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

  11. Brrr, feels cold comparitivaley speaking, working in Providence today, truck temp says 34 degrees

  12. got down to 24 degrees, Ice on driveway, coating of snow on top of that and a coating of snow in the yard

  13. Blah!!! That’s how I feel about today. Quite a slippery ride in. More slippery down along the south shore than boston . Got called in as I was driving into work this morning. Can’t remember snow on the 16th till today. Cold night on tap.

  14. Not anything I’m seeing on a long range model ….

April 16th snow can only mean one thing …….

Sometime in the next 14 days, or by April 30th, it will hit 90F + in the local area.

  15. My step daughters were so excited to see snow for the first time this morning. They both ran outside and took pictures to send home to their friends and family in Jamaica. I love the beauty of nature but it is always even more appealing when seen through the eyes of someone seeing it for the first time.

  16. Good morning, really a nice day today, nothing but sunshine, little chilly but typical short lived cold for April, nothing but fertilizations all day today, good day everyone 🙂
    Truck says it’s 40 degrees 🙂

  17. It’s pretty amazing that I’m standing here watching a landscaping company mowing a lawn in east providence, and I look on the blog and tk says he’s got a half inch of ice on the ground, so different up there compared to here 🙂

  18. About an inch in Pelham, NH. One thing this tells you is never say, “it is over”. If you say it is over you are just guessing. You are not basing anything on historical fact. With that said I hope Tom is correct with a 90 degree day within the next two weeks. If that is going to happen it would have to be at the very end of that time frame. It doesn’t look good in the near future. I know Tom wasn’t predicting that, but I hope it comes true.

    1. I think if you say it won’t snow every April, you will probably be right 9 out of 10yrs. We got nothing here, maybe a very light patchy coating or trace that was gone by the time I got out the door this morning, up there in nh very well is different I’m sure good day 🙂

      1. Charlie, would u say the same for reaching 90 degrees in April? Or is snow in April more rare?

    2. Haterain….I like your comment and of course you are 200% correct. April is a transition month and absolutely nothing can be ruled out no matter how rare we think it seems. We went from wearing tees and shorts yesterday to winter jackets today.

      1. Vicky you are absolutely right. April you can have 25 inches of snow (April Fools Storm) and you can also have 90 degree days. It is a crazy month.

  19. The latest CPC outlook has normal to above normal temps starting next week through the remainder of the month for most of the CONUS including NE.

TK – After this weekend, is it safe to finally put my winter coat in the dry cleaners and away for the season? Will the CPC outlook verify?

    1. Starting to see signs of a warmer regime. I won’t jump to warm/hot weather for everyone, not with the pattern’s habit of lagging the guidance that wants to change it, but more importantly the cold ocean sitting right next to us.

It does indeed look warmer ahead though, not just climate-wise, but pattern-wise.

Go ahead, put it away! What can possibly go wrong now? 😉

  20. We didn’t receive any snow here in north Attleboro, we had a trace of ice pellets, I saw a few patches, but it was gone by the time I got out of gym at 8am. 90 degrees in April is about as rare as snow in April, or at least close I would think 🙂

    1. Charlie you were close, and would have been correct if you said 80 degrees and snow in April. Boston averages .7 days of snow in April (0.9 inches). Boston averages 1 day above 80 in April, and basically 0 days above 90 degrees.
      MAX 32 OR BELOW: 0
      MAX 90 OR ABOVE: 0
      MIN 32 OR BELOW: 0
      MIN 0 OR BELOW: 0
This is Boston for April…interesting I thought it would have been a little higher for 90 degrees

  21. I have to retract that last comment because that was incomplete data. Trying to locate full data.

  22. Okay the full data for Boston and 90 degree days in April is less than .5 according to climate zone.com. Again, snow days and 90 degree days are pretty close for Boston. With snow just edging out 90 degree days.

  23. There were a few snow-melt ice patches overnight, and a couple tiny areas where my 0.7 inch tried to hold on in the shade, and made it.

Cool few days, milder Sunday-Monday (except still cool coast).

Replied to a few posts above.
