Weekend Outlook / Peek Into Next Week

6:08PM

Clouds dominated Friday, along with some areas of fog, drizzle, and a few showers. This is because warm air from the southwest is overrunning cooler air at the surface. In southeastern New England, we’ve been on this cooler side of a boundary for a few days, and as is typical in Springtime, chilly ocean water and northwesterly upper level winds combine to keep the warm air from making a big push into the region. The funny thing is, we will see the warm front finally push through Saturday, but plentiful low level moisture may never allow for complete clearing. What we will have to wait for will be a cold front that will sweep everything offshore and introduce drier air for Sunday – Mother’s Day. But alas, the air behind this “cold” front is really not cold, so Sunday looks like a stunning day with lots of sunshine and fairly warm air (except for some coastal locations which will be impacted by the adjacent chilly ocean water).

Looking ahead a little, next week starts with a preview of Summer on Monday as we briefly get into a southwest flow with more humid air. But it is not likely to last, as a boundary to the north pushes southward, aided by high pressure building over eastern Canada. This boundary will come through from northeast to southwest as back-door cold front by early Tuesday, making the middle few days of next work week on the grey and cooler side and pushing the summery air away for a while.

Detailed forecast for southeastern New England…

TONIGHT: Cloudy. Areas of fog and drizzle. Slight chance of showers before midnight. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms after midnight. Lows in the 50s. Wind shifting E to SE around 10 MPH.

SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers and thunderstorms in the morning, little activity in the afternoon, and a chance of additional showers and thunderstorms evening. Highs from near 60 South Coast to the 70s interior eastern MA and southern NH areas. Wind SE shifting to SW and increasing to 10-20 MPH with higher gusts.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy with lingering showers early followed by clearing later. Lows in the 50s. Wind SW shifting to W 10-20 MPH then diminishing.

SUNDAY – MOTHER’S DAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 60s immediate coast, 70s most locations, may touch 80 interior valleys. Wind W 10-20 MPH.

MONDAY: Partly cloudy. Scattered showers/thunderstorms late afternoon into the night. Low 60. High 81.

TUESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of drizzle. Low 50. High 60, cooler coast.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Low 48. High 60, cooler coast.

THURSDAY: Mostly cloudy. Low 51. High 65, cooler coast.

FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers. Low 52. High 64.

  1. Thanks TK. Nice description of the UGLY backdoor cold front this is quite common
this time of year. Hopefully, warmer air will displace it fairly quickly. We shall see.

  2. Thanks as always TK.

The most snow to fall in May in Boston (Logan) is 0.9″ on May 8, 1938 and the latest snowfall is 0.5″ on May 10, 1977. I would be very curious as to how much the suburbs received during that 1938 system and what if any impact compared to 1977. I just discovered the 1938 number just the other day. I always thought that the 5/9-10/77 was the “gold standard” of Boston May snowfalls so to speak. πŸ˜‰

Btw, all other May snowfalls in Boston were no more than a Trace which technically is “average” for the month.

  3. The Bruins should really think of tomorrow night’s game as a *MUST WIN* as well.

      1. I noticed a slight back-build on some of those cells which means a northward-propagating outflow boundary could kick off a few storms closer to the ballpark.

  4. Thanks TK.
Been on the wrong side of this warm front the past two days. Its been nothing but cloudy and at times rainy the past two days where I am.

  5. Top of Mt. Washington is 39F. SW wind.

Our surface winds seem to be slowly coming around to the south.

  6. Pumped about Skins 3rd pick Morgan Moses. He was a early 2nd round pick!! Maybe something right can happen for the Skins.

  7. What was a somewhat coolish day is becoming a very mild overnight. Temps havent gone anywhere, its still in the mid-upper 50s and the dewpoints arent far behind.

  8. hmmm this qb is either bradys replacement in about 4 to 5 years.(really sad day) or going to involve a big trade in future for the replacement draft picks. Still would like to see a TE and running back be picked or a a Wide out reciever thats big like randy moss big. What ever the case I do like this drafted Qb great numbers great smarts etc.

    1. The problem is that 4-5 years would be exceptional to sit out. Unless the franchise has earlier plans for Brady.

      1. i do have a sneaky idea that we might see this kid come out in 4 quarters to finish off games to keep brady’s arm in good shape

  9. Still have not mowed my lawn. And I have a nice lawn. Bet I’m still a week away. That’d be three weeks late.

    1. Our front lawn grew three inches yesterday…..well it looks that way. We have yet to treat grubs as we have some time constraints and are waiting for consistent rain so we will have to mow first. Back lawn won’t need mowing for a while. Overall lawn looks ugh. Oh well

  10. Today’s AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.

The highest frequency of cloud to ground lightning occurs in which state?
    A. Florida
    B. Oklahoma
    C. Louisiana
    D. Texas

    Answer later today.

  11. I am going with A.
This warm front continues to move at a snails pace across SNE. I would not be surprised if there are some rumbles of thunder across parts of the interior with the cold front coming through late this afternoon and evening. No severe storms expected.
Biggest threats looks to be a quick gust of wind and brief heavy downpours.

  12. Just step out to cover up the bags of gardening soil, and is it ever muggy out there. The downpour just started!!!

    1. I believe it goes away for tomorrow. And I just took the dog out and it feels like a rainy summer muggy day. Smells nice

  13. Hi Shotime…. Muggy air will break tomorrow for a nice Mother’s Day tomorrow. It makes a return on Monday. Monday again could have non severe storms for the interior as once again instablilty just like today is not that impressive.

    1. Thank you, JJ!
Hmmm… I might have to flip on the A/C switch. The second floor heats up like an oven in warm/muggy weather! Not bad now, but we’ll see what it’s like later once the sun starts heating things up. 8)

  14. Overthinking a question again. I’m sure Florida has the highest frequency of lightning, but …. the question says cloud to ground lightning.

It probably is A :), but I’ll go with D.

    1. Tom, I was thinking TX, too. I still went with FL based on the frequency of storms they get. But, I think you might be right with D. πŸ™‚

  15. *cough* A ….

    Hi all. Good morning. πŸ™‚

First muggy feel to the air. You could feel it coming on last night in the overnight hours. I was up on the hill in WeatherWiz’s area loading flattened boxes into my trunk and just hauling the boxes from the porch to the car was making it more noticeable.

The comments above are correct about the humidity going away tomorrow. It will be back for Monday but probably not in a major way, just noticeable if you are sensitive to it.

Something similar may happen again by Thursday but this time with more of a southerly wind and a longer trajectory over still-cool water, and this may lead us into a long stretch of cloudy and periodically wet weather late next week.

Thunderstorm threats today and Monday are not overly impressive as JJ stated, but there are a few parameters for a couple briefly strong storms today, though they would be isolated in nature within a small line or cluster. The less sun we see, the weaker they will be in this area. Not expecting a whole lot of sun in eastern areas today.

  16. Hi all – poking my head in during the off-season from snow storms. I am out in Denver on business this weekend (mom is not happy) and they have a decent storm coming in tomorrow. For those who miss snow, feast your eyes on this forecast. Otherwise nothing to see here:

    http://www.crh.noaa.gov/wxstory.php?site=bou

      1. So they could experience tornadoes as well as flooding from tropical systems? πŸ˜‰

        1. or hurricanes – wasn’t Hugo still hurricane strength when it reached Charlotte? Mac has many first cousins in Charlotte.

  17. The low 60F dewpoints and the nearing 70F temps motivated me to use the A/C in the car. It wont be many more degrees on the air temp before I try to turn the house A/C on, but my wife will kill me if I try to do that this early. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

  18. The difference between the 06z and 12z GFS regarding next Friday-Sunday tells us only that we’re entering a period of “model difficulty” again.

  19. At 1pm, Springfield and Westfield are in the mid-upper 70s, Albany is 75F ….. Most of CT is getting into the 75F-80F range.

Logan’s wind is WSW and if it doesnt turn light E or SE, I think it might get from 73F to 80F over the next few hrs.

  20. Cloudy 73 degrees in pembroke and absolutely muggy. Looks like a thunder boomer sky and I’m betting that happens at some point. Go bruins.

  21. 77 here with INTERMITTENT sunshine. Really beautiful out there!!!!

nearest convection is out by Albany. πŸ˜€

  22. Storms forming around NYC area and parts of NJ where there is a severe thunderstorm warning in northern NJ. The sun has been out for a while where I am and feeling the humidity for the first time this year.

    1. I think we are seeing more sun than maybe the models expected and so, there may be just a little more instability than projected. Will be interesting to see how far east and northeast these storms continue to make it.

  23. Logan is 78F at 3pm.

I wonder what the convective temp is for this particular airmass and atmospheric setup.

    1. 79 here in JP. Was just working outside. Pretty sticky out there
and quite a bit of sunshine.

        1. I probably wouldnt recognize many of today’s music personalities, but Jimmy Page is one I’d always get. πŸ™‚

          1. Sadly, never saw them live. I have seen the Stones live (1965), but not Led Zeppelin.

  24. Thunderstorm just ended where I am. Couple rumbles of thunder and some heavy downpours. It got up to the low 80s here prior to the thunderstorm.

  25. Now a new severe thunderstorm warning just popped up for a cell that is moving northeast but should stay just south of me.

    1. It felt like a thunderstorm was going to happen. It got warm and humid plus the sun had been out for four hours prior to the storm which only added a little more instability then the models were showing

  26. i thought it was getting warmer when i was doing my stupid 8-10 page paper out on the porch

  27. Nice and warm now. Just got back from kids’ track and field with a nice and tender burn.

        1. It’s usually around 60 degrees for Memorial Day, I agree it’s very cool, but it’s still fun πŸ™‚

  28. Answer to Today’s AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.

The highest frequency of cloud to ground lightning occurs in which state?
    A. Florida
    B. Oklahoma
    C. Louisiana
    D. Texas

The correct answer is A, Florida.

  29. As for tonight, both teams are probably at that must win game. Teams that are down 3-2 can always win the next two battles, but I am sure that is not where either team wants to be.

      1. When I google WORK, I get this:

        work [wurk] Show IPA
        noun
        1.
exertion or effort directed to produce or accomplish something; labor; toil.
        2.
something on which exertion or labor is expended; a task or undertaking: The students finished their work in class.
        3.
        productive or operative activity.
        4.
employment, as in some form of industry, especially as a means of earning one’s livelihood: to look for work.
        5.
one’s place of employment: Don’t phone him at work.

  30. Boston dew point has dropped to 54. That’s quite a drop from an earlier 63.

Storms are weakening as they move Eastward.

      1. One Bistro in Norwood. I’ve mentioned it before. It’s usually Excellent, although we were a bit disappointed last time.
We’ll see how they do tonight.

    1. Daughter said as hard as it is raining in framingham along Sudbury wayland border, it is raining much harder in Sudbury, rainshine, some roads have significant water

      1. I don’t doubt it – Rte. 20 and even Rte. 27 around Sudbury/Wayland tend to flood/get big puddles . Rain has let up here but still raining a bit.

  31. Storms are weakening as usual, my wife is petrified of thunderstorms, until she moved here, now she doesn’t worry about it like when we lived in Dallas. She always says she loves how they usually fizzle out once they get inside Worcester. I actually hate that, I want to see big storms lol πŸ™‚

    1. Little wind, heavy rain, or lightening doesn’t scare her, it’s the straight line winds that preceded storms, micro burst, hail bigger than a dime, and tornadoes that petrified her.

      1. Which is why New England is such a perfect place to live. We certainly can have severe weather but we do not have the constant worry of running for the storm cellar or out of the house due to an earthquake or mudslides or wildfires that destroy hundreds of acres or hurricanes that take years to recover from or any number of terrifying potential disasters. For the most part we can simply enjoy what nature tosses our way.

    1. Yes, but worth every minute of it! A beautiful light, cool breeze has replaced the muggy air!

  32. Started to rain a little here, but has recently stopped, heading out to dinner πŸ™‚

  33. At least on radar, that looks like an intense cell on the northwest side of Boston. I’d think these things would maintain intensity to coastline, except for Cape Cod, its very warm region-wide.

  34. I’m in Plymouth watching the game at family communion but I’m seriously considering ac when we get home.

    1. There was a nice breeze right after the rain, but has since died down. I was hoping that the rain helped with the mugginess, but dew pt. is still 64!

  35. After Monday, the week is not looking all that much fun on the weather front. Either cool and/or wet at least through Saturday and maybe Sunday.

      1. The grubs r already gone, there may be a few lonley larthagic grubs, they r a complete metormorphis so there a butterfly/ beetle now. BUT they laid there eggs for the 2nd cycle in Sept, so apply a preventative (merit) in a month. Good luck πŸ™‚

        1. Hey. Thanks. We did see grubs the other day as soon as we lifted grass but we still don’t need to worry?? We will apply in a month. Thanks again

          1. It doesn’t hurt to apply a grub control but you wanna get those eggs so they don’t hatch again in Sept. Have a good day πŸ™‚

          2. A grub killer will only kill the grubs, they won’t kill the eggs they layed, that’s why you need a preventative, apply the preventative in a month πŸ™‚

        2. Thanks Charlie! Makes sense since I have not see any holes in grass for a few weeks. Glad you posted this because I was going to put down some grub-x this week, but will now wait until Aug/Sept.

    1. I hope that weekend out look changes. First time in 10 yrs that my wife and I leaving our son. Leaving Friday morning for New Hampshire for a Saturday night wedding.

  36. Happy Mother’s Day to all you special moms β™₯ Wishing you smiles and happiness on this beautiful Mother’s Day!

  37. Happy Mother’s Day to all of the Moms on WHW. Wishing you all a fantastic day πŸ™‚
Looks like Mother Nature is cooperating β˜€

  38. Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms on WHW. I am glad it is such a lovely day – Spring has finally sprung! πŸ™‚

  39. 68.7 and on a slow rise to perhaps “about” 75 give or take.

Happy Mother’s Day all you Moms out there.

      1. For sure. πŸ™‚ I hope not Memorial Day Weekend. Last year was damp and chilly. We froze camping and then the next weekend it was about 95F.

  40. And here’s the best spot in the nation today to celebrate Mother’s Day outside in a relaxing outdoor setting ……

    Casper, WY …. Currently ………. 31F, light snow …. Wind chill 20F. Lovely ….

I guess the mom’s choice out there is cross country skiing or a black diamond trail.

      1. We were at dinner and the game was over by the time we were
done. Watched some at the bar while waiting for our table and peeked at the game with my Android app while eating, but didn’t
        see much.

        great game!

I did NOT like what Thornton did at all. Very disappointed.
I don’t care how much Subban dives.

  41. Hey everyone, it’s been a long time since I’ve been on the blog because of SATs/APs/track, but I only have one AP exam left. This friday I have prom, but it seems like it’s going to rain. However, looking at the GFS it seems that the rain might taper off by 4pm when pictures are and stop entirely by night. Does anyone have any evidence to back up my wishful thinking?

    1. We may get into a “wheel of misfortune” as Barry likes to call it, but dry slots are also possible.
