Sunday Update

10:41AM

Today will be a top 10 day. High pressure sits right on top of New England with a clear sky, light wind, and mild air being the result. The lingering chill of the ocean water still has impact, however, and that will be felt at the beaches today. So not exactly a perfect beach day unless you can deal with it being a little cool, which I suppose makes it a very good early season beach day if that’s where you find yourself today. Many people will find themselves at graduation ceremonies, the majority of them outdoors, with great weather for it. But be reminded, the sun is strong. It does not have to be a hot day to be dangerous. Do not forget sun screen if you are susceptible to getting sunburn.

What is coming up for the week? Well today we make some minor adjustments, as one may have expected was necessary given the level of uncertainty expressed in previous discussions. It looks like the warm air flows in for Monday and lasts through Tuesday as the next cold front will take its time arriving. It will be approaching during Tuesday though, increasing the chance of showers and thunderstorms then, after a rain-free Monday.

At midweek, upper level low pressure will traverse the region and it will be somewhat cooler and unsettled (in that there is a shower threat, especially Wednesday, less so Thursday). It does not look like we are in for a repeat of the unseasonable chill of the middle of last week.

“But we can’t wait! What about next weekend???” I’m optimistic that Friday and Saturday will be ok. The upper level low that I was concerned about never really makes it here as I see it now, and gets caught up in the other upper low going offshore after midweek. With this to the east and a ridge to the west, we should end up dry but a little cooler than normal by the end of the week. Are we looking at perfection? It’s too early to say and probably not, but the early call is for a decent end to the week. When we get into a pattern where there is a ridge to the west, we always have to watch for disturbances coming over the top and bringing clouds and showers when only a few days before it did not look like it would happen (Memorial Day, for example). I’ll take one more step and add Sunday to the forecast on the next update this evening, so you’ll just have to wait for my thoughts on that. πŸ™‚

  1. If you can handle a little chill at the shoreline today, there is not a whole lot to complain about regarding today’s weather. 100% sun, dry air, and not that windy.

And the post below this will be Longshot’s quiz from AccuWeather. Have a great day!

    Today’s AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.

What was the highest sustained winds recorded in New England during Hurricane Bob? (This is sustained winds, not gusts.)
    A. 80
    B. 90
    C. 100
    D. 110

Answer later today. Today is the first day of the Atlantic hurricane season.

    1. I’ll repeat C – I was thinking of D as I know it was a destructive hurricane in New England. But decided on C πŸ™‚

  3. Many stations across the area have cracked 70 as of 11AM. πŸ˜€

Logan is SLOW to report. Seriously no way Logan WILL. They will NEVER see 70 today.

      1. 65 and east is excellent for them. I think it goes up 1 more then levels off before dropping a bit later.

  4. TK, I’m unable to post in the Gardening Section – there is no comment box to type in nor reply option.

Charlie or John, Any ideas on which β€œorganic” mulch is best at keeping carpenters at bay, if any? That includes bark versus wood mulch. Thanks!

    1. That’s an ongoing issue I haven’t solved yet. I have a techie in the house today. I’ll see what he can do.

In the mean time post the questions/comments here.

    2. Although I can’t say if a certain mulch will keep the carpenter ants away I can offer some advice. Before putting down mulch spray down your foundation with some good ant spray especially one for this type of ant. Second don’t go heavy with the mulch along the foundation if possible keep it a couple of inches off. Spray down foundation again mid summer avoiding getting it on the planets, I would think this should do the trick. I’m sorry I could not answer it better but I did not want to ignore your question. Take care .

      1. Thank you, John! I appreciate you taking the time to respond to my question πŸ™‚
Sounds like a good plan – will treat area before laying down thin layer of mulch.

      2. John exceptional advice. We have regular pest control and that is exactly what they recommend.

  5. Thanks TK.
Its hard to belive but today is the 3 year anniversary of the Springfield tornado. I will never forget that day. We started with showers and storms with a warm front and skies cleared which added fuel to the fire. Lift index values were -8 and -10 and CAPE was up close to 4,000 and helicity values between 150 and 300. It was the first time I ever saw a tornado on live television in New England it was going across the CT River. Hopefully its a long time before anything like that happens here again. It goes to show if the ingredients come together we can get tornadoes here in New England.
Best instablity for thunderstorms Tuesday looks to remain west of SNE.

  6. Thanks tk πŸ™‚

Beautiful day today!! Perfect temp, mostly sunny with a few passing clouds, this is the type of day if I could control the weather, this is the day id pick every time, unless we were in a drought, then I’d rain heavy for a day lol, enjoy the day!! And good day!!

  7. Answer to Today’s AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.

What was the highest sustained winds recorded in New England during Hurricane Bob? (This is sustained winds, not gusts.)
    A. 80
    B. 90
    C. 100
    D. 110

The answer is C, 100 mph.

    1. If that thing develops we could be 25% through the named storms. Going to be a quiet season.
