63 degrees and foggy, my thinking is today will feature showers and tstorms developing west to east, reaching our area sometime between 3-6pm today, my latest thinking is mainly showers inside 128 Boston to Providence, way out west in Worcester they could experience a bit more potent storm
Msty and showery here on the South Shore. Looking forward to the nice weekend weather. Have a good day !
A line of showers and thunderstorms Hudson River Valley south with a severe thunderstorm watch. I still think that line will weaken as it approaches the maratime influnce so I don’t expect severe weather here today but don’t be surprised to hear some rumbles of thunder along with downpours and gusty winds.
That’s what I’m thinking jj not much tstorms around here, but far west
I have a question – at times I have seen thunderstorms actually get stronger as they get closer to the ocean. Some examples were in the recent past, when the storms were not that bad to the west of 495 but got stronger and even produced tornadoes along the CT and RI coast. I am not saying that will happen today – just wondering why that may have happened, even when the winds were out of the south and it was still early in the summer.
Coastal front interaction
Thanks, Charlie! I may have asked that question in the past but I forgot – will write it down! 🙂
What a beautiful day yesterday was – around here. I really feel bad for the people that had the tornadoes. Watching the Weather Channel last night and watching the videos and storms erupt – it was both fascinating and horrible at the same time. I believe here is where one of the places technology has helped people. Although a lot of people died, I think with the advances of dopplar radar, many more lives were saved because of the radar. Also, the meteorologists worked very hard for several nights. My prayers go out to those who lost loved ones and property.
I will be watching the skies and radar today – just cloudy and muggy right now. I am kind of hoping we don’t get any sun today – as it might increase chances of some severe weather.
Rainshine your correct because sunshine will destablize the atmosphere. You will here me say this a lot in the coming months when you get sunshine out ahead of a cold front that is self destructing sunshine.
Newton: “Sprinkly’ and very windy.
That’s all I can say — I’m in recovery from my near heart atack watching the B’s last night.
It’s very windy here in Sudbury – and the sun has been popping out at times briefly. I have a feeling there will be more sun out than thought – but hopefully the south winds will keep the severity of any storms down.
Longshot (9:22) :))
Also a strong warm, humid breeze in Framingham but no sun here yet. I have watched the coverage of the tornados in horror. And they just reported eight more (I believe) have died in VA. Rainshine is right that despite the devastation the videos of the tornadoes is can’t help but leave you in awe. My prayers also go out to everyone in their path.
Thanks TK for answering my questions from last evening early this morning! 🙂
Keeping my fingers crossed that the early May outlook changes.
Nasty storm in NW New Jersey with a tornado warning on it. Sun seems to be trying to come out…..its at least somewhat brighter than before. I wonder if Springfield eastward to Worcester and points south into Connecticut and western RI are in for a pretty good line of storms later this afternoon.
Hi Tom – would Uxbridge be included in that area you mentioned?
Hi Vicki.
I had to google to see where Uxbridge was 🙂 ……. I saw that there is a severe t’storm watch for extreme western parts of New England, and my post above was to wonder if some of the storms may make it a bit further east this afternoon than projected. I certainly dont think there’ll be any dangerously severe wx in central or eastern New England. After seeing where Uxbridge is, sure…they could get a heavy thunderstorm.
Thanks, Tom – it’s where my daughter and family lives
Some nasty storms in northern NJ and Westchester County NY that prompted tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings. No more tornado warnings at the moment but a severe thunderstorm warning up for Westchester County and I expect as that activity moves into CT for it too weaken as it progresses to the east. The storm prediction center feels the same way as only the western part of CT is under a severe thunderstorm watch until 4pm.
I’m thinking this storm line just entering western conn and western mass will cross our area between 4-5pm, I think this line will broaden out to a wider line of heavier downpours, I do not expect any severe weather around here and inside 495, I do expect some gusty winds and a few downpours, but more or less a 1-2 hr rainstorm with .40-.75 with isolated spots a bit more, clearing later this evening, have a great day everyone 🙂
Oh dear – that’s not good news for my husband. His golf league kicks off today at Sandy Burr in Wayland. Tee times begin at 4:00.
Boy the storms r weakening rapidly bc of the marine layer
I think you are right. Looks like a lot of rain just to the west of Worcester but as it heads east it starts to weaken a bit. Guess I was wrong about there being more sun – maybe that would be more applicable later in the spring and summer.
Just started raining in Sudbury.
Rain on and off in Framingham – of course the tarp on my sons motorcycle that he left here last weekend blew off and it started to rain just as I was out trying to cover it. It isn’t steady rain and more off than on at the moment.
What a difference a minute makes – torrential rain now in Framingham
Did anyone have a chance to see some of the videos of yesterday’s tornadoes ? (I saw them on the Weather Channel). The debris flying through the air was scary, but I was amazed at the mini tornadoes (Vorticies ?) spinning off of the huge tornado.
Tom I don’t have the expertise but just watched coverage and also noticed the smaller tornados spinning off the larger ones. Incredible. The devastation is beyond belief. It seems that entire towns are gone
Hi Vicki,
Ive been watching the Weather Channel a lot today as I am home battling the flu…….It has been horrifying seeing those aerial photos of towns being wiped off of the map. On the massive tornado that went through Alabama, one of the mets said that you probably had to be underground to have survived it.
Looking at the CPC NAO outlook (calling for a big transition from Positive NAO to Negative NAO), one of the benefits of this over the next few weeks is that it will likely put a stop to the inside runners of these vigourous dynamic storms, which should slow down the severe weather episodes. In turn, New England may become damp, gloomy and cool.
If you take the CPC outlook maps literally, “damp” could be putting it mildly. We could be in for a lot of rainfall…hopefully not like last March. At least we have long since got rid of the big snow melt.
I want to put away my winter coat, but now am not so sure…temps look very chilly.
It’s gotten dark here in N.Attleboro, a heavy downpour just came through, got about .15 in ten min, not much of a big deal, just wanted to letcha know
Now the sun is trying to come out
Same here in Boston, but getting darker again.
Storms that were over Long Island have held together and are moving through the southshore. Briefly intense rain, loud thunder and a bit of lightning here in Marshfield.
One clap of thunder in Framingham. Some downpours but brief Looks as if that’s it ??
Henry Margusity gets a lot of criticism for his forecasts of snow, and at times, deservidly so, but he was right on the money back in January and February while much of the nation was buried in snow, he predicted that lots of moist Gulf of Mexico air would be colliding with chilly air from Canada and producing very violent storms for the upcoming spring. The devastation in Alabama is absolutely horrifying. 🙁
I agree with you completely Philip and I think Joe Joyce, amongst others, also deserves some kudos. I seem to remember in a couple of his blogs a few weeks back discussing that the Gulf of Mexico was above normal temp wise and he went on to explain that this had the makings of a lot of severe weather.
My friend and her family live in Sumiton AL and they drove just a few towns over and saw major damage (houses in the middle of the road, etc.). Where they live was spared, just a long-lasting power outage.
TK, glad to hear the good news on your friend and her family !! …….We are having our second thundershower in the last few hours, with some light to moderate rain.
It’s unreal down there. I have a good friend in Tuscaloosa and he said it’s looks like parts of the area are just gone. So sad to see mother nature at it’s worst.
I’m so glad everyone you know in the south is ok. Watching the coverage is horribly difficult
Tom it looks as if the storms are training across your area tonight
Saying a prayer for those folks in affected by the tornadoes particulary those in Alabama. I don’t remember an outbreak of tornadoes this bad in my life.
I thought I heard Pete B say it was the single biggest day for tornado outbreaks in 35+ years. Not sure if I heard right but I can believe it.
