May Day, then “Mayday”?

8:20PM

After a Saturday that featured lots of clouds until mid afternoon in the Boston area, then more sun toward the end of the day, we will be able to enjoy a sunny Sunday for the first day of May! But enjoy the sun while you can, because when it fades away on Monday I don’t expect we will see much of it for the balance of the first week of May.

High pressure building overhead will be responsible for the nice weather on Sunday, though expect the coast to be quite cool thanks to a sea breeze. By Monday, this high pressure area will be moving offshore, making way for a frontal system to move in. This front will be slow to move in, and then likely slow to leave, as the upper level air flow will become parallel to the front along the East Coast. Also, slow-moving upper level low pressure will dominate New England the deeper into the week we go. All this means that a lengthy stretch of unsettled weather is likely in the cards. It will not rain all of the time, but several periods of damp weather and generally below normal temperatures can be expected, starting about Tuesday. More on this upcoming unsettled pattern on tomorrow’s blog. Meanwhile, for now, the details for the Boston area go like this…

TONIGHT: Mostly clear. Low ranging from near 33 inland valleys to 43 along the coast. Wind calm.

SUNDAY: Mostly sunny. High ranging from near 50 along the shore to the lower 60s over the interior. Wind N up to 10 mph early, mostly E 10 to 15 mph from late morning on.

MONDAY: Increasing clouds. High ranging from the upper 50s south-facing shores to the upper 60s inland. Wind S 5 to 15 mph.

  1. I guess Barry is thinking an inside runner with the low going west of us mid week creating the chance for showers and thunderstorms. I liked the question he asked what your favorite times of the year are. Mine are the winter since I love the snow, late April and May when things start to comeback to life after the winter, and mid September to the end of October with the foliage.

    1. My answer to that question is cheap because I like all times of year, BUT, if I had to give the edge to any period of time it’s October thru December. I’m a big fan of summertime, as well. 🙂

    2. JimmyJames those are my favorite times of year also except I’d add June. I like the start of the warmth and it doesn’t hurt that it’s my birthday month. Mid summer is my least favorite. No matter the weather I love new England.

  2. The problem I have with the summer is the heat, humidity and loud music blasting all around. Fall and spring are the most colorful and winter is the most peaceful with all the deep snow cover.

  3. Beautiful start to the day. My wife and daughter were tenting last night as part of a Daisy troop activity and are due back soon. Along with hearing about their experience, I am curious to see how chilly it was. From obs, I see that the sky cleared, wind went calm and it got down to 39-41F in the area they were in last night.

  4. It started out chilly here in Sudbury this morning but now it is already up to 50 degrees. It is a beautiful morning – bright and sunny with all the green foliage starting up and flowers starting to color the landscape. I enjoy all the seasons for what they are – I love the spring for days like this when everything comes alive after the winter; I love the summer when it gets warm and humid but with a nice breeze – but I don’t like 90 degree days that are oppressive with no breeze but I do like watching the sky when storms are around, as long as the storms don’t turn dangerous; I love the fall with the change to crisp and refreshing days after the summer and the colorful foliage; and I enjoy the winter with the first snowfall and the calm winter silence you get. I don’t mind 1 or 2 snowstorms but by late Feb. I am ready for spring. Sorry for the lengthy blog! Enjoy the day everyone! 🙂

  5. Today is May 1st…May Day! Today is also the day that Barry removes his snow sticks. He mentions it every so often on-air. My guess is he lives somewhere well north of Boston. I can’t imagine anyone living on the South Shore waiting this late before putting away any kind of winter “equipment”. I somehow get the impression most if not all the mets on the Boston stations live well north & west of the immediate city. Probably coincidence? Have a good day everyone! 🙂

  6. Just a quick comment regarding my earlier post – all and any storms are dangerous, especially when lightning is around as well as hail or heavy rain or even gusty winds. I try to respect all of that – but I still enjoy watching thunderstorms and particularly the skies – the clouds can be amazing at times. Going out now to enjoy the day and maybe get an ice cream! 🙂

  7. Rainshine. Your post was not too long at all. I enjoyed reading it since it echoed my feelings about the seasons. Last evening my grandson (3) and I were lying on the deck looking at the clouds. Amazing what children see in their shapes.
