Winter Over Summer

9:34PM

An anomalous pool of cold air almost literally put Winter above Summer Thursday, as the air which was only a little cooler than normal for much of the day at ground level was much colder than average aloft. This made the atmosphere unstable and allowed showers and thunderstorms to pop up. The lack of haze allowed for great visibility and viewing of storms which included spectacular cloud formations, heavy downpours, lightning, and hail. Not every place saw these conditions, yet some saw them more than once. It all depended on where you were in relation to the storms.

Now to look ahead. The chilly pool of air will be moving away to the east but its western edge still still be over eastern MA and NH on Friday, allowing additional clouds to pop up with another risk of showers and thunderstorms. Activity will not be as widespread as it was Thursday.

The weekend: High pressure dominates with fantastic Summer weather – low to moderate humidity, lots of sun, mild to warm air.

EarlyΒ  next week: High pressure starts to slip offshore allowing warmth and humidity to increase.

Middle next week: Frontal system and another advancing trough brings a chance of showers and thunderstorms with a cooling trend.

Forecast for southeastern New England…

TONIGHT: Clearing. Lows in the 50s, around 60 urban centers. Wind NW under 10 MPH.

FRIDAY: Sunny start, then sun/cloud mix with a risk of isolated showers/thunderstorms mainly afternoon favoring eastern MA and southeastern NH. Highs 73-81, mildest interior eastern MA and interior southern NH. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows in the 50s. Wind light NW.

SATURDAY: Sunny. Highs 73-80. Wind light W.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 55-63. Wind light SW.

SUNDAY: Sunny. Highs 75-83. Wind light S with sea breezes.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 63. High 83.

TUESDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 66. High 88.

WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. Chance of thunderstorms. Low 68. High 86.

THURSDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers. Low 62. High 80.

  1. Thanks TK. This is what I think of for August weather. In addition to Watertown, there was golf all size hail in Uxbridge. I heard someone was not by lightening in Plymouth but survived thank heavens.

  2. Wow!! Night and day between mallet an Grapapolo, Grapapolo has touch, what an impressive showing, and made Mallett look like a pile of poo, this guy is the real deal

      1. Still the composure is so rare, as soon as I saw him in the huttle we all let out a big yes!!!!!!!!! You can just see it in him, he’s got what only a handful of qb’s have, we will see if he continues to blossom, goodnight hadi πŸ™‚

  3. Sports wrap-up.
Red Sox = Terrible and can only go up from here.
Patriots = Good news from last night … they can’t do any worse.
Celtics = Just awful and no one ever knows what will happen with them.
Bruins = Good, but not good enough to win the Cup.

I wonder how Vince Wilfork would do as a Bruins goalie? πŸ™‚

    1. If u understand what preseason game #1 really meant I’m not sure your opinion would be that, but o well, I thought it was very productive, they didn’t check out of one play, not 1, football is nothing like any of the other 3 sports in anyway, good day longshot πŸ™‚

  4. This morning is one of those rare times I agree with Charlie.

Trade Mallet for a sack of flour. JIMMY GAROPPOLO is far superior to that turd.
He looks like he has all of the tools. I like what I saw and I don’t care if it was
against the subs. That was his first time ever playing in an NFL game, even if preseason.

One has to be encouraged. πŸ˜€

  5. And the Pats, ohh the Pats. Overall, I was disappointed. From the way the media has been portraying this team in camp I expected them to come out guns blazin’ and set a tone. I know its just the first pre-season game, but the team as a whole came out undisciplined, flat, and ill-prepared. I heard Mallet might be fighting an injury. Regardless, this was his chance to show what he can do with a lot of the #1 starters on offense and he blew it. He has had ample chances to prove he is a good QB and he hasn’t done it. Garapalo on the other hand, my gosh did he look good. I know i know, he was going up against the bottom of the barrel, but his poise and the tone he sets when he’s in there is remarkable. From what I’ve been hearing about him in camp I expected him to lay flat on the ground and surrender. He’s a gamer, just like Brady. The defense? Yuck. They better get it together. It was like watching a bunch of misfit toys running around out there.

    1. Right now they look like a bunch of undisciplined players and nothing close to the concept of a team.

  6. Will there be any storms today? That is the question.
Tk and Matt Noyes says there is that possibility. NWS sort of dismisses that,
but does allow a small chance in Central, Northern, and Eastern sections.

We shall see. Radar is clear as a bell at the moment.

  7. I love football and of course the pats but just don’t get into the early scrimmages . I watch like the third one when the starters play a lot. Left the house after 2am this morning and temp was low 50s.

      1. I also was anxious to see him OS. He is exciting to watch and man can he get rid of that ball quickly. It will be very exciting to follow him as he matures I think.

  8. Jim Cantore tweated this concerning ISelle:

    HurricaneTracker App
    ‏@hurrtrackerapp
@JimCantore After reviewing sat data, looks like LLC and MLC may have decoupled hours ago. May explain slow down. ??

    https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BuhNYmiIgAMTqsi.png

Ok what do LLC and MLC mean?

Low Level Circulation and Mid Level Circulation??????

  9. I don’t understand many of u and about being disappointed lol, nobody started!!!! They never checked out of 1 friggen play all night on both sides of the ball, they used 5 different plays all night and was very very vanilla, you all have your opinion and that’s fine, but please understand the nfl, no disrespect is intended at all but there r so many times people voice what they think but couldn’t tell me what a offensive tackle or defensive tackle is supposed to do during a particular play, I’ll tell u who had the 2nd worst game behind Mallett was Solder, but no one is mentioning him, overall a very very productive preseason game 1, it was nice to see all 3rd 4th stringers on the bubble trying to make team, as well as seeing Grapapolo, a lot of positive

    1. Charlie – I also had no problem with the game and am not judging the team based on it. None of us know exactly what was in Belichick’s mind. It’s pre-season and can be used for many reasons. I just sat back and enjoyed the idea that the real season is approaching.

The one thing I would respectfully request is that you not underrate the knowledge of others….particularly in comparison to yours. It is your opinion. Others opinions are equally valid.

    2. Man you crack me up with some things you say. Football is an easy game to understand and we have huge football fans on here including myself who know the game very well. Please understand your not the only one here who likes football or understands how the game is played. I love football. I understand. , I get it, I’m an honest fan and a loyal fan and I bet on it . Good day!!!!

        1. Charlie in addition to not underrating opinions of others may I respectfully request you stop laughing at comments by others. It is one in the same but seems you didn’t see that

    1. From NWS awhile ago:

THE ATTENTION DOES TURN TO THE
AFTERNOON AS THERE IS STILL A CHANCE FOR A SPOT
SHOWER/THUNDERSTORM. COLD CORE LOW STILL OVERHEAD WITH -16C TEMPS
AT 500 MB OVER THE REGION.

  10. Liked my time at the summit of Mt. Washington. Interesting place to be. If you’re interested you can read my comment on the Mt. Washington Observatory website: http://www.mountwashington.org – Go to `observer comment,’ August 5th (18:32 – this is when it was posted).

Unfortunately I had already gone home Wednesday so I missed yesterday’s action on top of the mountain. Lots of lightning, temps in the upper 30s, hail, probably some wet snow thrown in, as the atmosphere was dynamic, with very cold air aloft and warm air at the surface.

I follow Epstein’s blog on boston.com. I really enjoy reading his posts. Great insight. I do have a minor issue, however, with his reporting. He said the other day that this summer has been above average temperature-wise. I really think that’s inaccurate. My OBS people would likely concur. The Northeast has not been nearly as cool as the Upper Midwest, but it’s generally been slightly below normal. I don’t know where Epstein is getting his measurement from. TK, would you care to enlighten us? My best guess is that if we average all the temps from New England from June 1st on, we’d probably be just below average. Furthermore, Epstein mentioned the current heatwave in Eastern Europe. He’s right about the current heatwave. But, generally Europe (West and East) has not been particularly warm. In fact, it’s been right around normal, with a few regions reporting below normal temps. And as I’ve mentioned in several posts, the Arctic region of Canada has generally been well below normal temperature-wise. Why is this significant? Well, it hasn’t happened in a while. The Arctic region of Canada has trended warmer than average during summer for the last 15-20 years. This would represent a break in that trend.

    1. I believe that Logan is actually slightly above average, however, I do NOT know
about other New England locations. πŸ˜€

    2. Glad to hear you enjoyed your adventure, Joshua. Do you have any pictures. What a GREAT experience.

      1. I liked your MW obs comment, Joshua! I know at Blue Hill, where I work as an observer, we’ve been above average for May, June, and July. Globally, it has been well above average as a whole with April, May, and June all coming in as the warmest on record or tied for warmest on record according to NOAA. July data will be out in a week or two. It will surely be above average for the globe but I don’t know about individual regions or whether it will be another global record. I believe February 1985 was the last time Earth saw a below average month. It’s doubtful that changes any time soon. NOAA does a global analysis for every month, here is the June one.

  11. I think we can kiss any shower activity for today Good-Bye. πŸ˜€
Just doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. One little blip in SW ME.

I think that is all she wrote.

  12. One more thing on Jimmy Garoppolo, it looks like most local sports talk
show hosts agree with us, or at least Merloni, Fourier, Mazzarati, Adam Jones and
    Marshall Hook anyway.

  13. So far this Summer the temp is running slightly above normal in all areas except for slightly cooler along the South Coast.

    1. There is such a huge void between averages and what people feel it should be, I’ve actually enjoyed this nice summer, it feels much cooler than normal but still nice, I’ve been to 3 seminars in Boston in the last 6 months stating that bc of the lack of warmth we’ve had lawn watering should be cut along with weed cycles etc rtc etc etc etc, I’m not saying it hasn’t been hotter than average but for some reason most would say it’s been below normal this summer, it does feel like it’s been much cooler IMO, plus much less summer weeds like spurge, anyways have a good evening tk πŸ™‚

        1. But tk said it’s been cooler than average south which doesn’t make me crazy. Ik it wasn’t to hot

      1. Lack of oppressive humidity and no heatwaves, also very few days that even get into the upper 80s. But not a whole lot of overly chilly nights. Mild nights, average days… ends up slightly warmer than normal.

        1. Actually you said it’s been cooler than average here south so my feelings aren’t wrong, right?

    1. I thought it was going to be a hot babe!!!!! How’s things going tk? Hope your enjoying this great time of year.

      1. Going well!
        Enjoying the summer. πŸ™‚
Will be in Rockport tomorrow night for a fireworks display, Gloucester Sunday afternoon at the beach, and Beverly Sunday night for another fireworks display.

        1. You sure like your fireworks . Enjoy the weekend. Oh by the way still feeling the same on your early winter call, just curious and not holding you on it.

          1. So far yes, regarding the winter. Long way to go.

I am a true pyromaniac. I love my fireworks. I have thought of taking the class to become a pyrotechnician.

  14. Pete B mentioned in his blog that all the Forrest fires might have a direct impact on our winter. He’s unsure how much of an impact but thinks winter will be colder.

  15. Today’s AccuWeather Trivia Quiz

Which of the following is FALSE about a super moon?
(By the way the super moon can be seen tomorrow night.)

    A. Increases risk of earthquakes
    B. Causes higher tides
    C. Appears 30% brighter
    D. Occurs every 13-14 months

    Answer later today.

    1. I’m not going to answer the trivia quiz today, since I just saw it on WBZ. Good luck with this one πŸ™‚ Answer’s a little tricky, or as Kerry replied to Barry “Now I’m confused”!
Have a great day – looks like a beauty 😎

      1. The answer could be tricky. There is one answer that is totally false and there is one that could be considered partially false.

        1. That was my dilemma. I had two choices. And shotime you can answer since you didn’t look it up but knew it

    1. Another beauty of a weekend isn’t it JJ. And were you as confused by tigers continued play yesterday as we were. Mac says he wants to be in rider cup but darn.

  16. Tom Watson the U.S. Ryder Cup Captain will have to pick him to be on the team as one of his captain’s picks. I was surprised he played this week considering on Sunday the pain he was in leaving Firestone Golf Club. I think he rushed back to soon from the back surgery he had in late March and clearly in the four tournaments he has played in since coming back he has missed 2 cuts withdrew from one and finished tied for 69th at the British Open which is not Tiger like.

    1. We agree totally about coming back too soon and thought he’d let his back rest after he figured it out too. Mac said Watson has always wanted tiger but he doesn’t think it would be a good choice because he just isn’t the same tiger yet. Hopefully he will come back but I think pushing himself is not going to help. And that is my Monday morning QB view :). Also, Mac just explained to me that the captain has two pics.

  17. Tiger’s Rider Cup record isn’t that great. He’s a good individual competitor but when he has to play as a team he lacks that drive.

  18. Good morning!! A lot of blue skies here

I really noticed the days getting shorter yesterday being dark at 8ish now. So much for the dog days of summer, no dog days this year so far, nighttime averages are down to 58 degrees, and towards the end of Aug average lows are in the mid 50’s, love it!! Almost Falltime!! Good day everyone!!

    1. The “dog days” as defined by the Old Farmer’s Almanac, run July 3 through August 11. But as for the type of weather they mean, we have had very few, that is true. Don’t be surprised if we get some “dog days” during the “cat nights” later this month. πŸ™‚

  19. Absolutely gorgeous afternoon here with a very refreshing sea breeze and temperature
    78.4.

Nice rows of cumulus just Overhead and to the West. Completely blue sky to the East.
Some growth to those cumulus. Any talk of showers or t-storms near sea breeze convergence zone?

    1. Thanks for posting OS!
I scored Gone with the Wind – says I’m an old-school romantic who doesn’t mind getting swept away in a sultry love story. I was expecting something more like “Twister” πŸ˜€

  20. The blog has been updated!

I’m heading up to Rockport MA for Illumination Night which includes lots of randomly placed LED’s, other lights, and a big fireworks display.

    Have a great evening all!
