Double Reverse

7:29AM

High pressure brings a chill through early Saturday, then the back side of it brings a warm up later Saturday through Sunday. A low pressure area will stay offshore late Sunday only tossing some clouds across southeastern areas mainly Cape Cod. A cold front moves through early Monday and returns a chill by Tuesday, only to see another warm up later next week. This is typical September in New England. What is a little atypical is the dry pattern that has become quite established. In the short term, it means dry ground and lowering water supplies. In the medium term, it may mean muted foliage next month. In the longer term, it may be the start of a more significant drought into 2015 as some longer range indications point to more dry than wet.

Pulling it back in to the near term, SOUTHEASTERN NEW ENGLAND FORECAST…

TODAY: Sunny. Highs around 60. Wind N to NE 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows in the 50s. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

SUNDAY: Partly cloudy. Highs around 80, cooler coastal areas. Wind S to variable 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY: Early shower, partly sunny. Low 55. High 70.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 45. High 62.

    1. No Sweat. It makes 60 in most areas. 😀

In fact, what was the big hoopla about the cold. WHAT COLD?

It’s beautiful out there. No jacket again today.

    1. I was hearing Friday’s low temps would be coldest. Tonight’s low temps will actually be the lows for Saturday, no? I always get those confused, lol

  1. Most places will touch 60 today.

    Coldest temps Saturday morning.

The title was inspired by a mini golf hole.

    1. That’s cool. Which Mini Golf Course/Location? Hampton Beach? 😀

Still a FOOTBALL reference to me. A pretty nifty play when it works. Brutal
      when it fails. 😆

  2. 11AM

    Bedford 53
    Beverly 53
    Blue Hill 53
    Lawrence 53
    Boston 54
    Norwood 55
    Taunton 57

NOT much of a rise. Hmmm

Still plenty of sunshine yet to come.

  3. 1:30pm obs…

    55 in Walpole
55 in Boston with a 12mph East wind
    57 Attleboro
    59 Taunton

In and around Boston it looks like it will really struggle to get to 60. Far SE MA looks to make it to 60.

    1. Where did this Facuckta East Wind come from.

AND why is it only 55 when the ocean is 61?

      Logan weather defies all logic!!!

      2. I think because the air is so dry, that when the wind turns onshore, there’s almost evaporative cooling, as the ocean humidifies the airmass a little, the temp drops.

  4. I surrender. NO WAY Logan makes 60.

Even Norwood is only 58 at 2PM.
    They “may” just touch 60.

Ace you may have been correct all along and me OUT TO LUNCH!!!! 😀

    1. Yup, Sounds correct. 😀

It is chilly, but still nice out. 😆

I went out at lunch and very comfortable WITHOUT jacket. 😀

I wonder HOW LOW WILL IT GO TONIGHT??????????

  5. Monday morning at work I needed the coat till about 10am working outside . Today no coat at any point I’m fine in my sweatshirt. But I’m thinking tonight I wear jeans.

  6. Temps have soared to 56 in Walpole, lol. Had to throw a sweatshirt on at lunch outside…during the summer…inland…with full sunshine…what ?!? As Hadi said, this has to be some kind of daily low high temp record but i cant find any such data.

  7. Well give credit to Ace and Hadi.

Only a very few locations touched 60, IF that.

High for Logan looks to be 56 and that was at NOON.

  8. 4PM

    Logan 54
    Norwood 56
Taunton 58 (btw Taunton made 60, IF we can believe their thermometer. :lol)
    Worcester 55
    Chatham 58
    Natucket 58 (made 61)
New Bedford 59 (made at least 60)

  9. Temp is 43.4 degrees, it’s only going to go down to around 40-41 at 2am then begin rising and will be around 50 degrees by sunrise 🙂 goodnight

    1. Local ob stations online bottomed out between 35 and 37 down there.

Ironically it was colder there than in some areas of Worcester County thanks to an inversion and cloud deck that formed to the N & W.

  10. Today’s low maximum record was 49 in 1875 for Boston, sandwiched in between two 58’s yesterday and tomorrow. Oh well, missed that record today.

  11. Good Morning.
Been a while since I posted with a lot going on this week including my audition for The Price Is Right on Thursday at Mohegan Sun. I won’t know till mid October if I was one of the two people selected for the show.
Back to weather and one word to describe it BORING but as I always say boring for me is nice weather for you.

  12. 30s just about everywhere except the immediate shore and Boston, as expected. If there is a surprise this morning it’s the 30 in Norwood and the upper 40s atop Blue Hill. But then if you look at the sky NW of Boston (visually or by satellite), you know why. Inversion. The cloud deck that formed actually stopped some of the areas N & W of the city from dropping as low as they would have. The S wind started to come in aloft first but blow right above the cold air trapped at the ground.

    Examples as of 7AM…
    Norwood: 30 degrees and CALM
    Taunton: 32 degrees and CALM
Blue Hill: 49 degrees, SW 13 MPH
Worcester: 47 degrees, SW 7 MPH
Islands are interesting but not surprising: 33 at Martha’s Vineyard, 49 Nantucket.

LOCAL conditions including topography has a whole lot to do with weather, more than many remember.

  13. Charlie, not making fun of you, but your prediction raises an interesting point. You actually had the right idea….but needed to forecast for higher elevations or the immediate shore to be spot on. Worcester only bottomed out at 40 around 2AM followed by a 7-degree rise by shortly after sunrise to 47 when that southerly breeze (SW to be specific) took over. This breeze did not reach the lower elevations as it was blowing above the level of the temperature inversion while the cold air was trapped at the surface.

The thing that I didn’t get right was the extent of the stratus cloudcover in northern MA and some points northward. Enough moisture was there or got transported in by the SW wind a few thousand feet up to allow those clouds to form there, a lot like a valley fog would form at the surface.

  14. Thanks TK and North.
The people from WBZ and Price Is Right were so nice. You were filmed in front of a camera and had 30 seconds or less to say why you deserve to be a contestant on Price Is Right. Will see if I am the second from my family to appear on the show as my great uncle was on the original Price Is Right hosted by Bill Cullen.

    1. Hi JJ. That is fascinating and tons of fun. Would love it if you get on as I know you enjoy the show, Macs cousins son was on a few years ago as a contestant. Do they know before calling someone from the audience that they will be called.

      1. Hi Vicki…. I have heard that the people who hear the words come on down do not know that they will be called to play.

        1. Thanks JJ. I’m keeping my fingers crossed you are called. I never get to watch the show any more but have Wonderful memories of watching with my nana. That and what’s my line.

    2. You should have said “I should be on TPIR because I read the Woods Hill Weather blog every day!” 😉

Wow Bill Cullen. That goes back a bit. I remember him most from $25,000 Pyramid in the 1970s. Though I knew Cullen hosted TPIR about 1972, I grew up watching that show with Bob Barker as the host. 🙂

Drew Carey does a very admirable job, but in my opinion there will never be anyone to match or exceed Barker as the host, kind of the way I view Bruins telecasts without Fred Cusick’s voice. 🙂

  15. I don’t know how cold it got. I was 41 at 7:30 but 44 now so it is rising fairly quickly. Great apple picking day. Heading to Stow…not honey pot.

    1. Thanks OS. I’ve already shared my stories….a dozen times….but like reading about it because it brings back memories of my mom. I would thinks most or at least a good portion of lives lost would be due to lack of warning. I’m not sure the damage to homes, etc could be avoided

  16. Hey Everyone….My daughter is in Kalamazoo, MI attending Western Mich U School of Medicine (hooray!). The question is–any suggestions for a reliable weather site for a person who just needs to know the weather but can’t read maps and whatnot but has more than a passing interest in the weather. I know weather.com but am hoping that someone knows of a site comparable to this one (of course, there is nothing comparable to this, but you know what I mean). But in southwestern Michigan (of all places!)

  17. I’m starting to get concern with the lack of rainfall in the area. What are the chances or measurable, non thunderstorm, rain in the next two weeks? I’ve noticed the foliage changing early with dull reds and oranges, I don’t think we will see the vibrant colors of past years.

    We need the rain!!!!!!!!

    1. What amazes me coastal is our Area the hole if you will. When other parts of the area have got some rain it just seems like it bypasses down here. We have not had a solid soaking here since the 4th. Would you agree.

      1. John we have gotten rain but our rivers are even lower than last year. The rain is too sporadic and just evaporates. Most towns around here have a water ban.

    1. That is awesome . I have mentioned before he does a weather blog for boston.com and he puts out an outstanding forcast with with great accuracy. I would love to see him full time at one if the stations. He puts no hype into his forcasts and really just tells it like it is . He is also an avid Gardner .

  18. Btw after a series of different background colors, I vote for today’s color to be the ONE!!!

    Screw those other colors.

  19. Hmmm

11AM 79 at Logan with dew point of 66

    wind South at 10.

It was just waaaay more than 10 here a few minutes ago.

      1. I think 80+ is easily done late next week in some sections. Held back a bit for Saturday but may be warmer than I have.

  20. Good luck to your Patroits today in the home opener against a bad Raiders team.
I am hoping for a 2-1 start for my Cowboys as they take on the Rams on the road.

  21. Line of showers moving southwest to northeast off and on all morning – basically, it seems that has been the general movement of rain this summer, leaving the South Shore dry. If any showers/thunderstorms develop – hope they cover areas which need the rain most. I don’t want anything severe, ‘though. It’s last day of summer – fitting – as it sure feels like it – muggy!

  22. I know it’s not in my aged update above, but the showers are behaving about as recent short range guidance suggested.

  23. There will be plenty of low 80s this afternoon. Not a surprise. Exceptions will be to the SE nearer the water and under more cloudcover.

  24. Blog is updated! This is a short update with a long title. The week ahead post will be out later. 🙂
