Mild Tease

8:18AM

SUMMARY…
A warm front moves through southern New England today with periods of cloudiness and eventually more sun. What you will notice most of all is it feeling much milder by late in the day. This mild air will continue to flow across the region on a gusty wind through most of Friday as well but will come with periodic showers, mainly overnight tonight, part of Friday morning, and later in the day Friday. There may be some rain-free periods and even breaks of sun possible during the day Friday – not a perfect Spring day but it will feel quite nice, breaking 60 in many areas with the exception of areas that a southwest wind comes off water (South Coast, Cape Cod). A cold front slowly moves across the region Friday night into Saturday but slows enough for a wave of low pressure to come right across the region in the early hours of Saturday. This will enhance rainfall overnight into Saturday morning as the mild air tries to hang on. The rest of Saturday will feature lots of clouds, maybe a rain or snow shower, some sun, and a colder wind as opposed to the mild wind of Friday. This sets up an Easter Sunday that will feature more sunshine but along with very chilly air. I don’t believe the disturbance that I was watching earlier will be significant enough to cause any snow shower threat, so that’s gone from the forecast. What will be on the way is an extended stretch of unsettled weather next week, but to allow you some time to enjoy the milder weather coming in today and Friday we’ll leave out details of next week for now.

  1. Ok, I’ll be out of commission for a few hours and a little high on post sedative effects for a while once I get home. I’ll be able to post though. Good day all. πŸ™‚

  2. Thanks TK. It is my after sedative part that keeps my family laughing. They tell me I say odd things. But then how do the know the difference from every day πŸ™‚

    Sending positive thoughts!!

    1. Not too different here. Once after a sedative I walked with my wife and mother and Nate (in the stroller) to the elementary school to see an outdoor Memorial Day program my daughter was in and I guess I was lying in the grass talking to the flowers while we were waiting for them to come out. That was way back in 2001. πŸ™‚

  3. Thanks TK. Euro has a miserable forecast for next week. Very chilly and on and off rain most of the next week.

    1. Have we anointed the Euro KING again?

Why do we think that the Euro will verify?

Not being critical in anyway, just asking a serious question.

Looking at the GFS and the CMC, it does not look quite as bad as all that.
      That is all.

Now, Barry last night spurted out the Euro for the next 10 days. πŸ˜€

His response for the weather next week: BLAH!

  4. Just based on the potential set up it appears to me that it has a decent read on what’s going on.

    1. Ok, fair enough. Let’s see what happens.
I sure hope it is not as bad as Tk, Barry and yourself portray it to be.

      πŸ˜€

  5. NWS still concerned colder than expected air could come further south and produce frozen precip to SNE for next week as opposed to just a chilly rain. Do you see that possibility OS?

Best of luck today TK! πŸ™‚

    1. The colder air will be lurking to the North, for sure.
However, at the moment, I am not concerned about snow for next week.

One caveat: This time of year, the COLD air has a sneaky habit of getting
in here, so it clearly needs to be monitored. πŸ˜€

Probably change my mind after the 12Z runs.

  6. Snowdrops are poking through the remaining snow in my backyard. More bare than white now for the first time in many weeks.

  7. Mountain snows next week – above 2500 feet. No major storms, but I do think several inches each day. Cold rain and drizzle at the coast. There will be breaks, but it’ll feel uncomfortable.

Today feels colder than I expected. I guess brief warmth is coming. We’ll see.

    1. Thank you, Old Salty. Interesting that Providence, Boston, Bangor not only had high departures from “normal” but those departures were higher than their than its seasonal average. Providence departure seems to be the highest but I only looked at the top producers. Also, Syracuse was below πŸ™‚

  8. Hmmm

12Z GFS wants to upset the apple cart for Monday the 6th!
Tom alluded to this system the other day. Don’t know whether
this is real or Memorex. Waiting on Euro to see IF it has this feature.
    meanwhile, GFS is still cranking

24 hour snow map to not get confused with up North snow on Saturday.

    1. GFS out to the 9th. YIKES. What a Miserable week. Now I can see it big time.
Horrible AND that cold to the North is NOT very far away.

  9. School vacation next week in my town. Hopefully they will be going away since next week not looking great at moment.
We MAY not be doing with wintry precipitation just yet.

  10. JJ: I’d say your chances are pretty good for more snow. Vicki, Retrac, Matt Souza, and others who live in the interior or to our north will likely have snow, too. I’m not sure about the coast. Cold rain is about as bad a weather type as I can imagine. But, we’ll survive. It will get warm and sunny again, we hope. We all need a dose of Vicki’s optimism and good spirits. She’s incredible in this regard.

  11. I am enjoying sunny skies outside my window right now and temps in the 50s.
I am ready for spring its April and I can’t wait for a few months from now when were tracking thunderstorms and posting model runs for EHI Values CAPE Lift.

  12. The one area that stinks living in the spring is at or near the coast when that wind comes off the water. Its great in the summer to get some relief from the heat but bad in the spring.

    1. Oh dear πŸ™ I love the wind at the coast. That isn’t optimism. I really do just love the feel of it !

      1. Its good news when we get to summer time but bad news now for people who live near and at the coast.
I remember when I was going to college up there looking at the temperature map in the spring and seeing 50s
back home temps were in the upper 60s low 70s.
This is the first good spring day we have had here where I am.

      2. It depends upon what I am doing and how I am feeling
as to how I feel about the wind.

If the wind is COLD I don’t like it.
IF I am trying to fish and it is windy, I don’t like it.
If it’s hot and it’s windy, I like it.
If it’s stormy, I like the wind.
If I am golfing and the wind is at my back, I like it.
If it is against me, I don’t like it.

        You get the idea. πŸ˜€

  13. Some tweets from Matt Noyes. Take them or leave them. Your choice. πŸ˜€

Matt Noyes ‏@MattNoyesNECN 15m15 minutes ago
I don’t like the look of next week’s pattern. It’s favorable for some heavy rain events. flooding potential.

Matt Noyes ‏@MattNoyesNECN 16m16 minutes ago
Thankfully, Easter Sunday really hasn’t changed much since it came onto the 10 day. Fair & 40s. Chance p.m. shower North.

Matt Noyes ‏@MattNoyesNECN 19m19 minutes ago
Central and southern New England are unlikely to find a change to snow Saturday. Rain likely ending by midday.

    1. First one: Possibly, but I think we’ll have less heavy events and just a whole lot of cloudcover and light rain/drizzle episodes.

      Second one: Agree.

      Third one: Agree.

  14. I’ve returned after a procedure that went very well. There was areas that were damaged by disease over the years that have healed themselves. That’s very good news. And I’m in remission still. πŸ™‚

I’m a little grogged out, if that’s even a word, which I suppose is better than being “gronked”. That would hurt…

    1. Is this for your A-Fib?
      Good news. Be well.

So far, it looks like you can avoid Cardiac ablation. Let’s hope it stays
that way. Best of luck with it.

  15. The procedure was for Ulcerative Colitis which I have had since 1994. I have to get examined and checked for polyps every 2 years, as opposed to the every 10 years starting at age 50 for non-UC people. πŸ˜‰

After a very rough go the early years of the disease my doc and I finally got it under control and I’m remission 99% of the time. πŸ™‚

    1. So sorry to hear. You don’t just have one condition to worry about, but
      2. You seem to really roll with it well.

I’d be pissing and moaning every step of the way. πŸ˜€

      1. It was hard at first, especially with the colitis, because I was hit hard right away with flares that caused moderate to severe pain and internal bleeding, and I also had 3 complications which were inflammation of the lining of my eyeball (episcleritis) that caused pain so severe it felt like a literal dagger in my eyeball (sorry for the graphic image), a skin condition which gave me hives that looked like fruit loops on about 75% of my body but especially torso (it has a name but I forget it), and lupus-like swelling and intense pain in my knees and ankles to the point there were days I could not walk.

Gradually, over time, and with some bumps in the road, we were able to one by one get things to settle and now 21 years into it I’m essentially colitis-free.

  16. TK, glad to hear you’re ok.

Wind is a bit cool but definite feel of spring in the air today and tomorrow (except for any showers). Then it’s back to Ugh! πŸ™‚

    1. Should say there are showers in the spring – at least tomorrow they will be mild-warm showers!

      1. Its got 38F, drizzle, fog, cold rain, maybe ice pellets and wet snow as you go north written all over it. πŸ™ πŸ™

And, at least for me, its that kind of April cold that feels colder than when its 10F in January.

    1. Yup, not good !

Of course, its good for starting to slowly thaw out central Canada and Hudson Bay.

Our northeast wind south of the high is their southwest wind west of the high. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

    1. I agree. I don’t think we are done yet, despite the fact we are sitting
in April. We “could” be, but I don’t like the set up and I have a feeling.
I HOPE we are done. Honestly I do, but I fear not.

  17. Sox sent Castillo to Pawtucket. Call me what you will, but I truly believe he
belongs with the Big Club and Victorino should pound sand at some other distant
outpost. Get RID of Shane Victorino!!!! he is USELESS!!!!!!!!

    1. I agree. I think its the crazy culture of baseball, which always doesnt seem to just go with the better player. Sometimes its keep the veteran to keep the clubhouse content and thats nuts !!

        1. Nope! And that’s what makes him so good.
IMHO, John Farrell is an ASS!
Just consider the “5 Aces” comment. That’s all you need.
What do they think on Yawkey way? That we’re all a bunch
          of idiots????

Probably won’t matter, Victorino will injure himself
          Opening Day!!!!

  18. Today looked and felt like spring. Finally. But, it’ll go down as a tease. Tomorrow might be warmer, but will be less sunny and nice. And then Easter weekend and the start of Passover will bring a rather dismal stretch of weather. The bad weather may last as long as Passover. With lows in the single digits in parts of Maine, NH, and Vermont beginning Sunday, anything can happen. That’s serious cold for early April and the High is in the long-term parking zone. I’d say we definitely get some wet snow along with drizzle, cold rain, more mud, bad hair days, … can we say UGH … BLAH … It’s the medicine we need to swallow before better times arrive, flowers reveal themselves to the world, light green leaves decorate the trees, winter coats get moth-balled, and shovels and snow blowers find a cozy spot in back of the garage.

Red Sox sent down a player with much more potential than Victorino. Castillo has power, Victorino has virtually none. Castillo is dynamic as a hitter, Victorino no longer is. But, we won’t have to wait long. Victorino will come down with an injury soon. He and J.D. Drew are the most injury-prone outfielders we’ve had in a long time.

    1. Totally and completely agree with ALL of the above, but most especially
the baseball. I just don’t understand those morons on Yawkey way.

You’re correct. Victorino will injury himself taking a dump!

  19. http://weather.gc.ca/data/satellite/hrpt_hsb_ir_100.jpg

A couple weeks ago, there was a tremendous surge of warm air into central Canada that had Churchill at an amazing 36F.

    Not today.

    Its currently -15F, yup …. 15F below.

The cold air can be seen in the middle upper portion of the satellite picture above.

Very, very, very cold April airmass. A piece of which is destined to break off and head southeastward. It will be interesting next week to see how it interacts with the nearby stalled front.

  20. Average April snowfall for Logan = 2.0″

NWS continues its concern for very cold air moving further southward next week. I notice that Eric has similar thinking. His high temps for next week go as low as 36F for Boston with at least a mix w/snow quite possible. All I can say is that I am keeping my shovel right where it has been since late January. πŸ˜‰

  21. I keep my shovel handy even in July. Not for practical purposes. Just because I like to look at it on 95 degree days.

This said, I’m not a total winter nutcase. I really enjoyed today’s weather. This is what spring is supposed to be like. We get tastes of it periodically. Teases, as TK writes in the title of this post.

        1. Today was day 7 on the Pete B “reaching for 60s” forecast. That was so funny. πŸ™‚

    1. Hmmmm. I need to get that new grill together. Anyone wanna volunteer to help?? Too much snow still in front of gas grill to get to

        1. If I put the grill together it would probably function as a refrigerator. That’s how bad I am at stuff like that. πŸ˜›

          1. That’s pretty much my problem also. But it is either me or the norovirus crowd and I’d rather a fridge than what they have πŸ™

  22. was in Boston along the waterfront (near fort channel) mid-day today

felt spring-ish except for the wind near the water

later going to another appointment leaving Boston… about a mile after crossing the Zakim on I-93N… temperature jumped from 59 to 64 in the car

it was mainly 64/65 all the way out to Littleton

  23. Good morning. 49.5 here at 6:23 in the morning. Snow melting all night.
Can’t last much longer now. Will today put the finishing touches to it?
    We shall see.

  24. hmmm

Looking over the charts, I see more and more snow creeping into the picture
on several different days, like the 6th, 9th and 13th for instance.
Shows up on GFS and CMC.

So far, only showing about 3 inches total for Boston with a foot plus to the North.

Will this come to be? Who knows at this point.

    Watch and see.

I’m guessing Boston adds to it’s seasonal snow total. Probably by a few inches, but
    “possibly” considerably more.

    1. Ensembles don’t even resemble the operational runs.
Doesn’t exactly exude confidence. Atmosphere is pretty volatile.
Anything could happen. Should be fun to watch it all play out.

  25. Dave Epstein ‏@growingwisdom 3m3 minutes ago
Enjoy today. MT@NWSGray: The last time we had widespread 60s was before Thanksgiving. . Rain changes to snow tomorrow! #mewx #nhwx

Not sure this is going to happen in Boston. Certainly up North.
