The Week Ahead

8:52PM

COMMENTARY…
Forgive me if I brag a little. I’ll only be here in southeastern New England for 2.5 of the next 9 days. Taking off for Disney World on the 15th (Wednesday) and returning on the 21st (a week from Tuesday). I have not traveled that far since 1999, when I went to…Disney World. During my time there I’ll be (hopefully) entering short blog updates at the end of each day or first thing each morning. There will be down time in the resort room and I’ll be checking up on the weather both here and down there.

SUMMARY…
Time to focus on southeastern New England’s weather for the next 7 days. The pick of the week comes early, and that will be Monday, a generally sunny day as high pressure moves offshore and pumps warm air into the region. Of course the South Coast doesn’t get the full benefit of this warm wind since it blow from the south and southwest and comes across the cooler ocean water to the south. That’s Spring in the Northeast. A cold front will slice across the region from west to east Monday night and Tuesday morning bringing lots of clouds and some rain showers. It clears later Tuesday, which will not be quite as warm as Monday, but still fairly mild. High pressure dominates mid week with fair and mild weather. Unsettled weather returns Friday and Saturday as energy from the south meets a cold front from the west. The result will be a storm forming on the front after it goes by, so we probably miss the direct impact from it, just receiving showers late in the week. But by Sunday as the system intensifies while moving away, it will likely be a dry, breezy, cool day.

SOUTHEASTERN NEW ENGLAND FORECAST…

TUESDAY: Mostly cloudy with showers through midday then decreasing clouds & increasing sun west to east. Highs in the 60s. Wind SW 5-15 MPH shifting to W 10-20 MPH with higher gusts at times.

  1. Thanks TK !

We had a chance to spend some time on the small beach accessible in Brant Rock Village.

The depth of rocks now on the beach is pretty unbelievable. Based on what I’ve seen as “normal” the past 15 years, this was anything but.

From the beach, the top of the seawall would probably be about 8 feet above and today, it might have been 4ft standing atop the rocks.

I dont know what a few of the homeowners are going to do getting the rocks off of their decks.

    1. The only constant thing about the coastline is change. Relentless pounding by the sea. It took a good beating for 6 weeks this Winter.

    2. Tom last April when we arrived in Humarock the rocks were deepest we had seen them. When we left end of April they were two thirds gone. Crazy area

      1. I believe it Vicki !

I wouldn’t be surprised, if we go back 2 weeks from now, once a cycle of astronomical tides have come and gone, even is there’s no storm, that most of the rocks are gone.

      1. The irony is if it was negative, we’d probably have seen only about half the snowfall that we got. πŸ˜‰

        1. That is funny when you think about it ……

I wonder if there can be a hot summer then if we have a warm season negative NAO.

I’d think a negative NAO would feature a closed low parked in the Maritimes, sitting underneath a ridge over the Davis Strait or so. And our resulting sensible weather would be cool and dry, 70s to near 80 with low dewpoints and a NW wind.

  2. TK – hope you have a great trip to FL! Are you staying on a Disney property?

I love it down there, the monorail voice on the PA does it for me every time… seems like it has not changed a lick since I was 5.

That and the smell of the plants/flowers inside the polynesian resort.

  3. The 70+ club should include Taunton, Manchester, the interior valleys, and Charlie’s truck. πŸ˜‰

    Have a great day all!

  4. Good morning and thank you TK.
Have a great time on your trip and please bring back some nice weather.

    re: yesterday
No Sea breeze to my surprise. With the winds at 6 mph at 11 AM I was certain
they would flip to the East. Nope, Westerlies picked up just enough to keep it at bay. πŸ˜€
Nice touch as yesterday was simply gorgeous, topping out at just about 67 at my house.

    re: today
So far, temps are responding well and on the rise.

Ok I have a WANKUM for you all.
Watched channel 5 last night and specifically Mike Wankum.
He advertised SW winds of 15-25 mph and had the Audacity to say
on air that Boston would top out at 64 due to proximity to the Ocean!!**(!&(*#&*(!@&*(#&!*(@&#*(&!@(*#&(*!&@#*(&!@*(#*(!@#&!*@&#*(!&(@#*&!*@&#*(

    Give me a break!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This man should NOT be allowed on air!!!

Makes me REALLY appreciate TK, BB and EF.

    OPENING DAY AT FENWAY

    Yeah!!! Go Sox.

On a Sox note: DID the real Clayton Daniel Buchholz show up yesterday?
I wonder. That guy is a true MEAT HEAD!! ACE? My arse!

I guess just a bit too much Southerly component to the wind to preclude 70s.

Wind at Logan 8AM obs it Stright SOUTH.

IF the wind is truly straigh South, no one in Eastern MA reaches 70.
That would be restricted to areas pretty much West of Worcester.

However if wind is SSW move the 70s Eastward 30 or 40 miles.
IF it is due SW, then all but South coast, cape and islands reach 70.

It will depend on the wind direction.

  6. HMMM
9AM obs => VERY LIGHT WINDS across the area. Hopefully SW wind picks up.
Winds are generally between 3 and 6 mph from the SW. That is all.
    Will continue to monitor.

  7. Up to 60 already 10AM at Logan.

Wind West at 9 mph. So Wind is up some in last hour. Excellent sign.
Let’s keep it that way. IF Wind stays West and does not go East, Logan
will top 70 for sure. Wind has to go South or East NOT to reach 70.

    1. 62 at Worcester already wind at 220, Which is pretty much SSW. Ever so slightly closer to South than West.

  8. Thanks, TK. And enjoy your trip to FL! We went to Disneyworld back in the 70’s but I’m sure it’s changed a whole lot!

Finally, some beautiful springlike weather. However, I’m not putting away my winter coats just yet. I’m not saying we could get more snow, but who knows.

      1. Ok – no snow, no snow ’til nxt. Dec. I will do a “no snow dance” that will keep any snow away ’til nxt. Dec.! πŸ™‚

  9. At 11AM

Boston 64, however wind is at 180 Degrees or due South, but only at 8 mph.
    Norwood, 66 30 2309 that’s SSW
    Taunton, 65 33 2106 SSW
    Worcester, 62 26 2314
Hartford, 61 37 1707G15 that’s a bit east of due South and picking up
    Providence, 59 37 1510 That’s SSE
    Fitchburg,67 26 2307G17

Wind is picking up out there. So it looks like no East wind seabreeze, however,
there may be some modified influence from ocean to our South.

    1. I can’t believe they were able to get the field ready so quickly. A few weeks ago it was buried in snow.

      1. It was the black sand applied to the snow that actually allowed
it to melt significantly faster than it otherwise would have. πŸ˜€

        Amazing.

  10. There’s already dandelions in the lawn at my work if you can believe it. Also, raked my front lawn yesterday and I can’t believe some of the crabgrass survived the winter.

    1. I have customers mowing today, it is amazing that just 1 month ago there was 1-3ft across the area, and now some are mowing. Some on here were even stating it wouldn’t be bare ground till after patriots day, lol don’t ever underestimate a few foggy 50 degree days πŸ™‚ enjoy the day

  11. Noon Observation at Logan:

    67 32 1911

So it’s 67 with a 32 dewpoint and Wind from 190 Degrees at 11 mph.
Just a tad West of Due South. It may make 70 with that, but there will
be a limiting factor to the high temperature due to modified ocean influence
from the South. Good sign it is 67 already. I think it can, I think it can, I think it can!
    πŸ˜€

  12. I’m down near cape may this week. 73 out right now. “Wicked” green grass, infant leaves or fully swollen tree buds, flowers. Ahhhhhh……….

  13. 2PM

Logan 69 with wind at 190, 14 mph.

    Norwood 66, wind at 170

Blue Hill 66, wind at 200

    Hartford 67, wind at 200

    Springfield 70, Wind at 200

    Taunton 66, Winds at 200

    Providence 58, Wind at 160

Logan is lucky to be at 69.

This Southerly component is putting a cap on the temperatures this afternoon.

  14. OK now, what is Tim Kelley mean by this tweet????

Tim Kelley NECN ‏@SurfSkiWxMan 1h1 hour ago Duxbury, MA
Take that record cold winter! I cannot believe it’s going to snow again next week

FWIW, I don’t see it on GFS or CMC???

      1. I asked him and he says YES snow next week. Unfortunately
he didn’t indicate where except to say to me across the street but not at my house. πŸ˜€

  15. At 3:38 pm EDT, the last remaining bit of slush from the largest snow pile in my yard has melted away. For the first time in 80 days, there is no longer snow here on the property! In the words of Joe Castiglione, “Can you believe it?”

Red Sox 1, Nats, Bottom 2…

  16. Regarding that tweet earlier: It was just a reaction to the fact one of the GFS runs had precipitation over SNE while it was cold enough to support snow sometime next week. I have to say that I believe those tweets are made really just to ignite a reaction. They want the replies: “OMG OMG OMG, SNOW?! AGAIN?!?! BUT IT’S APRIL!!” and ones like that. It’s not a calm mention of the fact that still some lingering cold air can create a little bit of late-season frozen precipitation and maybe explain how it would take place, but just the teaser type line designed to “make an impact”.

Will it happen? Maybe. But even if it did it would not be a set-up for a late accumulating snow event, but more likely rain/snow showers. I wouldn’t worry about it. πŸ™‚

BTW speaking of snow, I had to drop Mom off at the hospital and drop my son’s friend off at home, and enjoying the drive with the windows down and the Sox on the radio, I saw a woman shoveling a snow bank out of her front yard (north side of house) into the sun-filled street. She had a smirk on her face as I passed her. πŸ˜‰

      1. Mom is fine. πŸ™‚ She was going to visit Dad and chat with the staff about the next move. Dad should be discharged this evening or tomorrow.
