SUMMARY…

One more mild afternoon ahead of a cold front. This front crosses southeastern New England this evening with showers and possible thunderstorms, then a cool air mass arrives as we return to a pattern of below normal temperatures during the coming days. Upper level low pressure will provide some instability with a few showers possible each day through the weekend. A surface low offshore may back up enough to bring more general overcast and possible wet weather early next week.

 

SOUTHEASTERN NEW ENGLAND FORECAST…

THIS AFTERNOON: Increasing clouds. Highs in the 60s except 50s South Coast. Wind S to SW 10-20 MPH with higher gusts.

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy with a couple rounds of showers west to east through 2AM, then breaking clouds. Lows in the 40s. Wind SW 10-20 MPH and gusty, shifting to W.

THURSDAY: Partly to mostly cloudy. Isolated afternoon showers. Highs in the 50s. Wind W 10-20 MPH and gusty.

FRIDAY: Variably cloudy. Isolated showers. Lows 40-45. Highs in the 50s.

SATURDAY: Partly sunny. Isolated showers. Lows 40-45. Highs in the 50s.

SUNDAY: Partly cloudy. Isolated showers. Lows 40-45. Highs in the 50s.

  1. A quick note on a discussion here the other day, mainly because I couldn’t really reply the way I wanted to via phone running around Disney World…

    The third Monday in April, known as “Patriots Day” (not to be confused with the football team), celebrated in Massachusetts and Maine, is very significant. Most of you don’t need any lesson on that because you payed attention in history.

    September 11, “Patriot Day”, and very well known why, unless you were on another planet during 9-11-2001 and since then.

    Do we really need to go there? Comparing them? It’s not even a fair comparison. And I can tell you that NOBODY in any other part of the country is wondering why we have a Patriots Day when there is already a Patriot Day. Patriots Day has been around for a long time, and is symbolic of the movement that started this country’s fight for independence and its victory in that quest.

    Patriot Day (9-11) may be defined in one way by something tragic that brings us all together and something beyond that which keeps us together. You can expand upon that in your own personal way, which happens to be one of the many freedoms you enjoy by being here, and given to you initially by the Patriots that started it all off, those for whom that “localized” observance is for.

    The declaration of independence may be signed by many and on display for all to see, centuries later, but it all started with a dip of one pen held by the hand of one man into a small reservoir of ink. He represented everyone there, and all of us here.

    Understand what these things mean and think about them before you attempt to demean them.

    1. Just thought I might add something from T. Jefferson of Virginia and the Second Continental Congress:
      “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, –That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”

      1. Very nicely said by you both. What an amazing far sighted, truly gifted, group of individuals we call our Founding Fathers. I cannot help but believe they had a special guidance to be able to envision this country. The Massachusetts Constitution (written by John Adams – my hero and so under-recognized) is the oldest functioning written constitution in the world. I cannot even wrap my head around that thought.

  3. WBZ radio is reporting “70 in Boston” but that temperature is taken at the studio. It is also incorrect. It’s not that warm there. I would bet money on it. Nobody was above the 69 at BDL (as of 1PM).

    1. At my house in JP at 12:30PM it was 69. Why couldn’t it be 70 at BZ?
      Seems reasonable to me. šŸ˜€

      I had to get off of it. I just could NOT tolerate all the jumping around
      the Facuckta website did while I was attempting to read the report.

  5. If you look at the winter overall it started off mild and winter didn’t get started until January 24th. But once it got here it certainly made up for showing just over a month late with the amount of snow and a very cold February.

    1. Good for him. I believe the Pope has just made a statement on our responsibility to protect this earth as well.

      I was watching a show on horseshoe crabs last night and their value to medicine. It occurred to me (not for the first time) that as a kid we always saw horseshoe crabs along our beaches. Now….none. And we don’t think we have made a difference…. silly old humans.

      1. i have actually seen a lot more than i use to up in Salisbury area/north shore. I have been around as long as some but if this amount of change has happened over the 21 years i been around. then we have a dam problem.

  9. Back to BELOW NORMAL temps for quite some time.
    I was unable to drag the ABOVE NORMAL northward with me.
    It was WARM down there. 84-89 every day from Wednesday through Sunday. During Monday it got into the lower 80s but more widespread showers/storms came earlier in the day and capped the temps and then they went down through the 70s in the outflow behind the storms (one of which caused a small tornado east of Orlando). Yesterday, when we left, it was heading for the upper 80s rather quickly.’

    By the way, I’ve decided that saying “above normal” versus “above average” is just fine. “Normal” and “average” are well-defined terms in climatology.

    Normals are determined over a 30-year period.
    Average is a value determined in a shorter term, such as the “average” temperature for the day. The comparison is then made between the average temperatures for the short period against the normal temperatures for the long period to determine departure.

    It shouldn’t cause any more confusion. People just need to understand the difference between the two. There is nothing wrong with these established terms and I learned these and the difference between them, among many other terms, when I worked with the MA State Climatologist. I respect his knowledge and even though he is no longer with us I will continue to use what he taught me. šŸ˜€

      1. We are going to be stuck for several days but in the pattern where we have the instability pop up clouds and isolated showers, not the persistent ocean wind we CAN get at this time of year. Though that may make an appearance early next week for a couple days…

  10. Tweaking back the shower intensity and frequency this evening. It’s pretty stable here in eastern areas. Remove the risk of anything frozen, and only the slightest chance of a thunder rumble.

  12. For the allergy sufferers, please take care over the next few days. The counts will most likely be over 10 for Fri-Sun (unless it somehow rains). I think the enemies are poplar, elm and maybe juniper.

      1. The air aloft will be quite chilly the next 7 to 10 days.

        Interior, elevated areas may be susceptible to some wet snow if a coastal system can get close enough to provide some steadier/heavier precip.

        What a brutal run of the 00z GFS that was, if one is looking for any mild spring weather in the northeast anytime soon.
