Hi all,
What day yesterday was, unreal to see what happened. My thoughts go out to anyone who had any issues!!
Question for anyone wanting to take a stab at it, looking for a forecast for next Friday. I have a huge company event and wants some thoughts on people think we might be dealing with. Thanks!!
Weatherwise, today makes me think of Don Kent and his saying….”Summer Polar Air”…….Hadi, I really dont have a confident answer to next Friday’s weather, but I hope it works out for the company event.
Here is some preliminary info on the tornados from the NWS:

Wow – Thanks Old Salty.
It is a glorious day and I’ll take Summer Polar Air any day – great description. We have my grandson’s 4th birthday tomorrow and I understand it will be comfortable with less wind which is just great!!!
TK you out there? Any thoughts on Friday for SNH? Thx a bunch.
OS I read their thoughts as well. Unreal for an EF 3+ tornado in Mass.
Hi, all – many of you probably already know, but here is the latest info. on Weds. tornadoes. There was a confirmed F3 tornado that started in Westfield and ended in Charleton. It was about 1/2 mile wide. There were also 2 more tornadoes that touched down, I think in that area or just to the east that were F1 tornadoes.
In any case, it was a day we will never forget. The photos of destruction; the tragic and sometimes amazing stories; the astounding photos and videos of the storms; all of this is a jolt to remind us that we should always be on guard.
In Sudbury that afternoon, it stayed almost constantly dark with on and off thunder. What was weird was that it was more like a low overcast and there weren’t many cumulous clouds. Around 6 p.m. there was some brightening and orange to the west – I thought it had to do with sunset, but it was too early for that. My mother, who lives in Framingham said the sky was pink around that time and thinks that was because of the tornadoes. I don’t know about that – maybe so – the debris could have colored the sky.
Anyway, let’s enjoy this nice weather, albeit on the cool side. We hope to do a little hiking this wknd. – nothing major but just to get out and enjoy the wknd. Have a great wknd. all!
Hi Rainshine – on an unrelated weather question – has the bear been anywhere near your home? I’m wondering if he or they are in the Sudbury area since one seems to have been first spotted there and then having been through Wayland and Weston doubled back through Framingham and was last seen in Sudbury.
Hi, Vicki – actually – I was one of the people who saw the bear in Sudbury. One of my neighbors saw it just before me and called 911. I didn’t know she had seen it until she called me later. I was on my computer which faces right out the window and all of a sudden I see a black bear run through our yard – between my neighbor’s house and ours. The bear ran across the parking lot and then kind of hesitated before running into the woods across from us. I couldn’t believe it and told my husband who just saw it as it went into the woods. He then called 911 and reported it. I think there have been other sightings in Sudbury, too.
In any case – I had never seen a bear before. Uhhh, I was shocked and kind of scared. This week has been something – bears, tornadoes – wow!
Wow Rainshine – you were one of the people who saw the bear and reported it?? I heard last night one was spotted in Southboro – probably the same one. It seems to be following a combination of the aqueduct and old railroad beds. The aqueduct runs right behind our house so I’ve been watching for it. Typically black bears won’t hurt anyone but I wish they’d move it before it is accidentally cornered and then hurts someone out of instinct and not malice. Then of course I’m afraid they’d label it a danger for doing something that comes naturally and have to shoot it.
Yes, Vicki – I was one of the people who saw it. It all happened so fast I didn’t have time to get a camera or get my cell phone to take a picture. I hope it doesn’t hurt anyone and I hope they don’t have to hurt it, either. Have a great day and enjoy the cool weather – it is supposed to get hot by the end of the week for a few days.
Should this tornado be called the “Springfield” Tornado even though it affected many other cities and towns? The infamous Worcester Tornado of 1953 passed through other towns west and east of Worcester as well causing much destruction.
A tornado of this magnitude really should be given a name IMHO.
Would like to hear others thoughts…including TK’s. 🙂
That’s a tough one, Phillip. The western MA tornado seems too general but there was extensive damage in so many other communities. Did the Worcester tornado cause similar damage in communities other than Worcester? I know it was severe there.
Yes Vicki, I know for a fact that Shrewsbury had homes totally destroyed as well.
I received a call from my aunt from North Carolina Thursday evening. She was naturally concerned hearing about the tornado on the national news. I told her everything were OK since that the tornado only affected western MA a good 70+ miles from Boston. She had been trying to reach us for quite some time. There were phone issues with my line for the past few days earlier plus lightning struck the answering machine Wednesday evening which knocked out the phone completely. I had already contacted Verizon Wednesday morning and promised to come out Thursday which they did and told me that my answering machine was the reason for the phone being knocked out, and the original problem (not being able to receive calls) was fixed on the outside by climbing the telephone pole in the neighbor’s yard.
What is ironic is that earlier this spring I called my aunt to check if she was OK from tornadoes in NC. She was not affected thankfully. It seems just about every area of the CONUS has been affected by a tornado at some point this year. I hope this is the last of it.
Philip we received a call from my sister in law in Atlanta and also from my husband’s cousin in Charlotte who we had also called previously this year. It is ironic. My brother-in-law who lives outside of San Francisco also called when he saw the news. He lived in MA for quite some time when younger and said he had to look about four times to make sure he was reading correctly and that they were actually talking about Massachusetts as he watched the photos of the damage.
That tornado damage was incredible and watching that tornado cross the CT River was amazing. I have never seen a tornado caught on camera here in New England since most of the time it is rain wrapped and this is the most destruction I have seen in New England from a tornado outbreak since July 1989.
To me this goes to show we can get tornadoes here in New England and even strong ones on the rare occassion.
Replying to a few questions above:
It should be and will be called “The Springfield Tornado” for the same reasons the Worcester tornado is known by the name it is.
Friday: I think we’re looking at a mild & dry day at this point. Have to tweak based on timing of a frontal system which I think is slated for late Thursday at this point.
A chilly 50 degrees out there currently, and going down to around 44 by morning…
Mid-Fall weather…?
Thx TK!
