The Week Ahead

11:09PM

REMINDER…
Adjusted format begins with a late Monday post. As always, comments and suggestions are welcomed!

SUMMARY…
A sharp cold front dropped from north to south through southern New England during Sunday. Many places saw temperatures fall 10 to 20 degrees in just an hour or two, and many areas sat at 20 to 30 degrees cooler by late Sunday afternoon than just 24 hours prior. Along with this came bands of showers and thunderstorms, some with heavy rain leading to areas of flooding. The worst of this has been tapering off during Sunday evening, but the frontal boundary sitting just to the south with waves of low pressure along it, and high pressure to the north, will combine to create damp and very cool conditions well into Tuesday with periods of rain and drizzle. By mid week, high pressure will build down from the north, dry it out but still keep it on the cool side. By late week, high pressure will sink to the south allowing for a warm-up, but we’ll have to watch another high pressure area that may build to the north and try to push another cool-down this way. There is some uncertainty regarding the weekend due to this, and the possibility a disturbance will also try to ride through the Northeast at some point despite the high pressure battle ongoing. The result here, a lower than average confidence forecast for Friday-Sunday.

  1. Thanks TK !

    Happy Meteorological Summah ?!?!?!?!?

In general and ignoring the next 2 days, I dont particularly like what the models are trending towards for the first 15 days of June. It hits 80F+ (10) times in May and now, I get the sense that doing that the next 15 days might be a struggle.

  2. Looks like the Providence area was the big winner for rain yesterday. 3.19″ reported there for the past 24 hours. Been awhile since we’ve seen anything like that.

    1. And for the month of May, Providence finishes the month at +0.14 inches of precip for the month.

  3. Ace, North and all,

Was that beneficial rain OR were any of you shorted on the rain?

Man, is it chilly out there. I can take a couple of days of this as LONG as we get
back on track and this doesn’t become the new pattern. 50s in June does NOT
sit well with me! Not that I can do anything about it. ๐Ÿ˜€

  4. That front yesterday was one of the more Dramatic and sharp fronts I have
seen pass through in awhile. To be sure there have been fronts equal or even
more dramatic, just not that I can recall anytime recently.

Now let’s get the rain we need and be done with this CRAP. ๐Ÿ˜€

      1. I believe the rain tapers down soon for a little lull and than is with us for tonight through the morning tomorrow with the pm clearing .

    1. another short wave traverses the front enhancing the rainfall tonight. Much more rain to come after just scattered showers today.

      1. Understand that was the plan. There just wasn’t much of anything showing up on radar upstream. Not much showing now either for that matter. A little bit in Indiana and Ohio, but surprisingly
little. We shall see how that develops.

Today marks the 4th anniversary of the June 1 tornado which caused significant damage along a 39-mile path from Westfield to Southbridge, Massachusetts.

Although tornadoes of this strength are rare in southern New England, it serves as a reminder that you need to be prepared when severe weather threatens our area.

  6. Logan received 0.91″ yesterday but still a loooong way to go…-4.67″.

I had to close all my windows and turn on the heat again. It seems lately this chill happens every early June just when you think summer is finally here…UGH! ๐Ÿ™

    1. UGH is correct. Car thermometer is reading 49 Degrees after 1PM on
June 1st. Wow! Wonder what the records low high temperature is
for the date? We have to be close.

      1. It’s currently 48 at the Airport! 48 freakin Degrees!!!!
It’s JUNE 1st for crying out loud. Gimmie a BREAK!()&@#*&!*&@#*(!&@*(#&!*(@#&*(!&@*(#&!*(@#&*!&*@#&*(!&@#(*!&(@*#&!*(&@#*(!&*(@#&*(!&@#*(&!*(@#&(*!&@#*(&!*(@#&*(!&@#*(&!*(#&*(!&@#*(!&*(#&*(!&@(#*&!*#&*!

          1. Sure, but NOT when it’s 48 Degrees on June 1st!
            ๐Ÿ‘ฟ ๐Ÿ‘ฟ ๐Ÿ˜ˆ ๐Ÿ‘ฟ :twisted

  7. I have no clue if this site is accurate or not, but it looks like we may have
    broken a Low Maximum Record.

Daily temperature and precipitation extremes for Jun at BOSTON WSFO AP
    * indicates also in previous year(s)

Date High Max Low Min Low Max High Min High Pcpn High Snow
    1 96 1879 41 1945 53 1992 69 1872 1.94 1992 0.0

That would indicate a Maximum temperature of 53 and it appears it is a LOW
    maximum for the date.

    1. I’m surprised 2011 and 1982 are not listed in there. Although I’m having trouble figuring how to read it.

        1. Thanks Vicki and this was in there:

          June starts cold and wet.
We have about 36 hours of cool wet weather to go before things become more typical for June. The coldest high temperature recorded for June 1 in Boston was 53 degrees. If Boston only reaches 52 degrees, which is possible, this would make this the coldest June 1 high temperature on record.

            1. And I Did. Always like to be correct! ๐Ÿ˜€

Given that, it will probably reach 54 Degrees at 11:59 PM. ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜†

                1. Framingham always counts, after all it was the home of Lou Merloni. I actually dated a girl from Framingham. No, not the current Mrs. OS. ๐Ÿ˜€

  8. Where is the additional rain coming from? I look to the south west and I see sporadic showers, nothing organized.

  9. Rain will generate over the boundary. The air above is still unstable. There are also small perturbations moving along the front, enhancing lift. We’ll be under the influence of these factors through midday tomorrow before this winds itself down.

    1. Hmmm

Now that you write the above, Looking at radar, it seems to be slowly filling in to our SouthWest from North Carolina through Pennsylvania. ๐Ÿ˜€

        1. No one for a second is doubting that.

Once upon a time a mistake may have been made in granting a Degree to me. ๐Ÿ˜€

      1. It’s a JOKE. C’mon all.

However all over Ontario and Quebec it IS WARMER than here. ๐Ÿ˜€

  10. I saw the link Old Salty posted about the Springfield tornado. Hard to believe it was four years ago. We had the warm front came through during the morning hours followed by self destructing sunshine and around this time we were radar watching as those storms were developing one turning into a long track EF 3 tornado.

  11. OS…I figured you were just joking, but I do suspect that there are some legit places in Quebec with the word MOOSE in them. ๐Ÿ˜€

  12. After the front that ushered in cooler temperatures Sunday, we’re dealing with a persistent onshore flow with cool ocean water. That spells April-like weather for a bit.

I am, however, puzzled by the decision to postpone tonight’s baseball game. I think that they could easily get the game in this evening. This said, this miserable team needs a day off, and I really think management is postponing the game for this reason.

    1. Management made a MESS of this team and doesn’t know what to do with it.

      I like Lou Merloni’s Plan:

Ship Napoli out of town for a bag of balls or whatever else one can get for him.
      Move Ramirez to 1st base.
      Bring up Jackie Bradley Jr.
Trade swihart and another prospect to Philly for Cole Hamels and Ruiz.
Send Joe Kelly to the Bull-Pen

And whatever other adjustments are needed to make this work.

      What a DISASTER AREA!!!!!!

  13. Boston’s colder than Come by Chance (New Foundland):

    http://www.townofcomebychance.ca/town-history.php

And, colder than Saint-Louis-du-Ha! Ha! (Quebec).

    And, colder than Forget (Saskachewan).

I left out all the weird, lewd names of towns throughout Canada. For some reason, there are plenty of those. And Boston’s colder than all of them on June 1, 2015.

    1. Cool. Yeah I remember that one. Took me a long time to get home that
      day. Yup, Sure did.

      1. I would be curious if the BERRy* had the same issues as the T did this past winter (2015).

*BERRy = Boston Elevated Railway (precursor to MBTA)

    1. Hmmmmmm …… Logan’s avh high temp goes from 72.7F on June 2nd to 75.8F on June 12th.

I’m a bit frustrated that 80F is going to be a struggle the next 10 days, but I think some days near 70F or in the low-mid 70s are possible. I dont think we’re stuck in this frozen stuff, except for tomorrow. ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. Im whispering. I don’t mind this weather ….it’ll be hot and summer soon enough. I don’t mind enjoying this until then ……please don’t tell Old Salty ๐Ÿ˜‰

    1. Sorry Vicki, I read this ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

      I’m in camp OS !

  15. It’s not that easy being green
Having to spend each day the color of the leaves
When I think it could be nicer being red, or yellow, or gold
Or something much more colorful like that

  16. Wow, nothing is going good … The pain in the ass kitchen getting renovated. Trying to fix the deck and the weather is suckish. Pool party is for june 20th. Better get some warm weather by the 7th so we get a good 14 day streatch to dry things out and warm up the pool… i doubt it though…Im looking at the weather models and i do not really see any normal or above average temperatures. Very frustrated i was hoping the good weather from last week would come. I loved that heat i want it back quickly

    1. Unfortunately, I see several fronts, troughs and even tropical moisture in our future. I don’t see any persistent ridging for more than a day or two at a time for the first half of June and perhaps even beyond. 60’s-70, clouds, occasional sun and occasional rain will be the rule. This is NOT what many of us want to see despite needing the water.

    2. That sucks Matt. Pools in New England are so risky, and especially before July. I had one growing up and unless it’s in full sun they will ever warm. Takes a heatwave to make it comfortable but one night in the 50s to cool it down to uncomfortable levels

  17. Say goodbye to the drought/fire conditions, most have received 1-3 inches of rain so far, and another 1-3 inches of rain is quite possible the next 18hrs. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. I’m surprised by what looks to be coming the next 10 days or so.

I thought that the May pattern had a good chance at being locked in place.

El Nino, the warm SST’s off of the west coast, the very warm western Canada and Alaska spring, very chilly northeast Canada. A lot of things had been very similar for weeks on end, including a very dry northeast.

I thought it was going to be status quo.

I’m not sure its been a huge hemispheric pattern change all of a sudden. But, just some small changes that have been enough to suddenly have our region very wet and potentially mild w/some wetness the next 10 days.

I wonder if this is temporary and we revert back to the May pattern in a few weeks ?

    1. Very impressive. Upper level energy is what will be responsible for impressive rainfall totals tonight in our area. Your lawn and garden will appreciate it.

  18. OS, in response to your post this morning. I ended up with .82 through 9 am this morning while Providence got over 3 inches. Somewhat beneficial to start but need more on top of that .82.
