Wednesday Forecast Update

7:33AM

DAYS 1-5…
Humidity will be much lower today but a disturbance with cold air aloft may trigger a few isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms on an otherwise mainly dry day. Perseid Meteor Shower peaks tonight and early Thursday with the potential for seeing 60 to 100 meteors per hour in ideal conditions (away from city lights and after 11PM until just before the light of dawn). High pressure brings dry weather and lots of sun Thursday. An approaching warm front will increase some cloudiness during Friday but overall a nice day. A weak cold front will bring the risk of a few showers and thunderstorms Saturday, but this activity will likely be limited, favoring areas north and west of Boston earlier and Boston southward later. High pressure brings dry weather again Sunday.
TODAY: Early clouds departing eastern areas but other clouds popping up during the day. Isolated showers/thunderstorms this afternoon. Highs 75-80 Cape Cod and Islands, 80-85 elsewhere. Wind light W but may be gusty around any showers/storms.
TONIGHT: Partly cloudy early then mostly clear. Lows 58-65. Wind light NW.
THURSDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 77-85. Wind light N with coastal sea breezes.
FRIDAY: Increasing clouds. Lows 58-65. Highs 75-83.
SATURDAY: Variably cloudy. Isolated to scattered showers/thunderstorms. Lows 60-67. Highs 80-87.
SUNDAY: Mostly sunny. Lows in the 60s. Highs in the 80s.

DAYS 6-10 (AUGUST 17-21)…
Limited shower/thunderstorm chances. Mainly rain-free. Temperatures above normal.

DAYS 11-15 (AUGUST 22-26)…
A few shower/thunderstorm episodes. Still mainly rain-free. Temperatures near to above normal.

  1. In Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Weather has been unbelievably good. Upper 60’s, low 70’s, mostly sunny, no humidity. Today is the first rain since came up here. Met people from Newfoundland who said they are having a cold, wet summer.

  2. Thank you TK.

You wrote for Saturday: SATURDAY: Variably cloudy. Isolated to scattered showers/thunderstorms. Lows 60-67. Highs 80-87.

Request: Pleeeeeeze keep it more ISOLATED. And for Boston at least, keep it
to the lower 80s and not upper 80s. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

  3. Handle Change from Old Salty to Jp Dave

I made a couple of test posts last night.

I am changing it because, frankly, I don’t like Old Salty. I used that on the BZ blog years ago and kept it here. I was trying to be funny. Perhaps the old radio/TV personality from RI, Salty Brine played a part, I don’t know. The name part that is real is “old”. I HATE sea food. I generally have nothing to do with the ocean.

Therefore, I am switching back to a handle I used in the earlier days of the internet,
JP Dave. Yes, my name is Dave and yes I am from JP (Jamaica Plain).

    Hope none of you mind.

    Many thanks

    1. Salty Brine, now there’s a name I haven’t heard in a while. I grew up listening to him on WPRO (well, my parents had it on all the time). Favorite lines of his was when he would announce the school closings during snowstorms for their “Operation Snowball” segment. The way he said some of the towns was classic 🙂

  4. Thanks tk 🙂 seeing the 1st hints at some light color in the leaves up here in uxbridge 🙂

    1. That’s funny. To me, it’s Down there in Uxbridge. 😀

My Sister leaves in Uxbridge and that’s where my Dad lived until he passed.

    2. Have we really had that much of a reduction in daylight to promote leaf color changes? My guess is its more due to drought conditions but I could be wrong.

  5. And Dave, you’ll always be Old Salty to us. You could change your name to super Mario or Luigi and we would still call u OS 😀

  6. Thanks TK !

The sun’s back and so is the traffic volume on Rte 139 ….. oh well. Went through light cycles yesterday with perhaps only 1 switch.

A welcome to your new handle Jp Dave.

  7. http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/east/eaus/vis-animated.gif

Yesterday’s front is clearly seen along the entire east coast and then tails back along the northern Gulf Coast.

Currently a lot of shear in both regions, some from the 500 mb ridge for the Gulf of Mexico and from the trof along the US east coast.

El Nino is probably rendering tropical waves moot this season. But, as has been pointed out, something developing closer to home is more of a possibility.

And usually, it evolves from fronts like this. Not now, but I wonder if 2 or 3 days down the road, when the trof begins to lift and gets replaced with a ridge …… if there’s covection remaining with the remants of this front, if something might begin to stir from it.

  8. Hey TOM, btw you were 100% Correct.

I saw 90s for Monday and Tuesday from Barry’s 7 day last night.

    Good call.

    1. Thanks Jp Dave.

I keep waiting for “the next model run” to change things up, but the 00z runs this morning were consistent. So, looks like a return to very warm/borderline hot weather is in the cards late weekend to early next week.

  9. If its going to be warm here its going to be warmer when I am down in Hershey, PA for vacation from next Wed through next Sunday.
Has anyone here been to Hershey Park and if so what did you think of the place. This will be my first time down there.

  10. From Taunton NWS office. 😀 😀

    APPROACHING UPPER TROF AXIS
WITH COLD POOL TEMPERATURES ALOFT WILL DESTABILIZE AIR MASS THIS
AFTERNOON BUT NEED TO OVERCOME DRY AIR. LOOKS LIKE BEST BET FOR
ANY DEEP CONVECTION WOULD BE ALONG NORTHERN MA…ESPECIALLY HIGHER TERRAIN…AND POSSIBLY EASTERN MA SHOULD WE ESTABLISH ANY SEA BREEZE BOUNDARIES.

FWIW, Barry didn’t think there be much of anything in SNE, save perhaps
    a spot shower.

I don’t know what to believe.

    1. Boston winds from NW at 8 knots. No sea breeze at this point.

Plymouth winds are variable, so sea breeze looks likely there.

      1. That guy hasn’t started his shift yet today as he had a Dr. Appt.

        Watch for the next update. 😆 😆 😆 😆

  11. Is it ok if we call you JPD for short? 😉

It has always taken me awhile to get used to changes in general. It even took me some time here getting used to South Shore Kid (formerly John).

You will always be “Old Salty” to me, but I will certainly respect your wishes. Just keep posting as always. 🙂

    1. Most of week. Warm to hot late August. 2 early cool shots in Sept otherwise warm month too.

  12. Just came back from lunch. Getting some vertical growth to some of that
cumulus out there. I was watching one tower blossom. Early signs?

    1. Was just going to report the same thing. Some fairly tall clouds floating by my north facing window

    1. Seems to be that the judge is not doing what was expected (ruling on procedure alone). It seems he is pulling the Wells report apart. Not sure I like Kessler tossing McNally and Jastremski under the bus and sure seemed as if he did unless I heard wrong.

      1. What I heard was that Kessler said IF the balls were deflated,
then Mcnally and Jastremski acted on their own. He NEVER
said they deflated the balls. Is that throwing them under the bus? I suppose perhaps it still was.

I would have liked Kessler to have said, Tom didn’t order
anything and NEITHER Mcnally and/or Jastremski EVER
deflated any footballs after the refs approved them.

But it is what it is. (sorry)

Still, it looks better than it could have looked.

        Let’s see what shakes out.

        1. That is true…he said it was conceivable that they thought it would be good for the QB. And it definitely looks better than I expected because it does not appear the judge is sticking to procedure alone. Just do not like that statement.

  13. JP Dave….all I can think of is the Cheech and Chong skit.. “Dave”….”Dave ain’t here”…”No it’s me Dave”….and so on and so on….

  14. Latest from our “friends” at the Taunton NWS:

    130 PM UPDATE…
POPCORN SHOWERS WITH NO LIGHTNING YET OVER NY STATE UNDERNEATH COLD POOL AS UPPER TROF APPROACHES. CONSIDERABLE CUMULUS OVER SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND BUT NO SHOWERS YET. HAVE SOME SCT POPS ACROSS NORTHERN MA AND WIDELY SCT REST OF AREA BACK FROM S COAST. THIS MIGHT BE A BIT AGGRESSIVE…ALTHOUGH WILL LIKELY REALIZE GREATER INSTABILITY OVER SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND LATER IN THE AFTERNOON. ANY SHOWERS/TSTMS THAT DEVELOP SHOULD DISSIPATE QUICKLY BY SUNSET. TEMPERATURES GENERALLY ON TRACK.

    1. Are you doing a RAIN dance Tom? I can see it now. I at least hope you
are on the beach and not running around town!

      1. LOL … No beach today, was running errands to the Quincy area and just got back.

Some convergence as wind at route 3 was west and here, there is a seabreeze.

        1. Doesn’t sound like enough to generate more than
a few puffies, but you’ll let us know if they pop
some rain. I think we don’t see much, IF anything at all,
until the cold pool aloft arrives a bit later AND
from I see, we will lose the effective heating (lower sun angle these days) before it arrives, mitigating any
chances for convection. Possible for a shower or 2
here and there. We shall see.

  15. Reading on WATD, over the weekend, for the 4th time in its 43 year history, the sea water being taken in at the Plymouth Nuclear Power Plant exceeded the 75F threshold that is evidently important.

The reason did not imply global warming. Rather, they cited tides along with winds that were mixing the outgoing water from the power plant. (I wonder how warm that water is). The other 3 occasions evidently all occurred in 2013.

If I read correctly, this caused a 3 and 1/2 hr ten percent reduction in intake to offset the warmer water.

      1. One of my favorite topics…nuclear power 🙂 Good thing I’m occupied with Brady today 😆

      1. Perhaps, just maybe, it’s time to RETHINK Nuclear Power
        altogether?

Personally, I think they ALL should be SHUT DOWN
permanently. It was a BAD idea, period.

Harness the Wind, Sun, Ocean Waves, Geo Thermal.

    1. The opinion on the street (no idea what I mean by that) is that the judge wants a settlement and will come down hard on the ones he feels are wrong. It was thought he would, in some fashion, make it clear which way he was leaning in order to give the wrong doing party a clue. Perhaps this is the clue?

      1. I think it is.

Judge wants a settlement and this is what it will be:

        1. No suspension at all.
        2. Brady is exonerated for having anything to do with deflating
        footballs
        3. $100,000 fine for Brady not cooperating with the
        investigation.
        4. NFL gets to keep the fine and Pats still lose draft picks
        as unfair as that is.

If Goodell pushes this to Court, the NFL looses completely
and “may” even have to pay back the million dollar fine
        and the draft picks.

Just an opinion is all. Could be totally and completely wrong, but seems reasonable based on what I have heard. We shall see.

  16. Brilliant from Taunton NWS office, simply brilliant:

    .NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THURSDAY MORNING/…
WATER VAPOR IMAGERY DEPICTS TROF AXIS AND A LITTLE DEEPER LAYER
MOISTURE MOVING INTO WESTERN PART OF FORECAST BUT WILL SOON BE
RACING THE DROP OFF OF SOLAR INSOLATION. ANY SHOWERS AND CUMULUS
CLOUDS SHOULD DISSIPATE FAIRLY QUICKLY WITH APPROACH OF SUNSET.

        1. That seems to be a theme from younger generation. I find it interesting and there is absolutely no insult. I admit to being surprised when my son in law made the same comment and intrigued

  17. Jp Dave (formerly Old Salty)…Is it ok if we can refer to you as “JPD” for short as well? 😉

It is going to take me awhile to get used to your new name even though it is your actual name. I had the same issue with “South Shore Kid” (formerly John). 🙂

    1. I’m old. SSK will always be John in my mind and OS….well, OS

Would you both rather be SSK AND JPD ……sighhh so many changes 😉

        1. Now that I would never call you. But in the iPad I tend to hit OD rather than OS so have to be careful. Maybe JPD has less risk 🙂

  18. Tomorrow night 1st preseason game!! I can tell by the traffic increasing over the past couple of weeks, the New England Patriots are back!! It’s such a short season, I cherish every single game. 🙂 defending the Lombardy, hungry for a 9th Super Bowl appearance, and hungry for #5. 🙂

    1. I heard a rumor Brady won’t play. Not because its just the first game, but because he missed yesterday’s practice. BB’s policy is no practice, no play. We’ll see.

      1. Brady will not play, G man will play some, our new qb pick up will be fed to the dogs, with a 2nd string o line. I’ll be looking at my roster trying to figure out who is out there. Nevertheless it’s Patriot football. 🙂
