Tuesday Forecast Update

9:17AM

DAYS 1-5 (SEPTEMBER 15-19)…
5 days of high pressure in control, sunshine, above normal temperatures, and fairly dry air. It doesn’t get much more simple than this. The only “complication” I can find is overnight and early morning fog that may form in valleys, swamps, bogs, ponds, lakes, and any other low-elevation location starting Wednesday night / Thursday morning.
TODAY: Sunny. Highs 77-85. Wind W 5-15 MPH.
TONIGHT: Clear. Lows 53-60. Wind light W.
WEDNESDAY: Sunny. Highs 77-85. Wind light variable.
THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY: Sunshine by day. Mainly clear at night with the exception of patchy fog in low-lying locations. Lows 50s to lower 60s, coolest in valleys. Highs upper 70s to middle 80s.

DAYS 6-10 (SEPTEMBER 20-24)…
A cold front moves through September 20 with no more than cloudiness and a few showers, but it may stay dry and it will still be a warm day. A shot of cooler and dry air with a gusty breeze for September 21. Fair and warmer September 22 then cooling slightly but still mild September 23 as high pressure moves in from Canada. Disturbance may bring clouds back by September 24 though unsure of timing of any systems this far out.

DAYS 11-15 (SEPTEMBER 25-29)…
A couple rounds of wet weather possible during this period but not looking for a major pattern change at this time, still mild and near to below normal rainfall overall.

  1. Thanks everyone. 🙂

I’m doing very well. My role is a strength one. I was the youngest and always the shy kid with the blonde dutch boy haircut when I was little. As an adult it’s been a reversal. But really we are all doing well, knowing that my dad’s final days were comfortable and that he was in his 90s. Cannot ask for much more than that, honestly, and we are very grateful. We are having his wake on one day, Thursday afternoon/evening, and a mass and funeral on Friday morning with a gathering after that. Mom is thankful to be able to do all of that this week and rest over the weekend. As we get to next week, it will be the start of a new phase for her, but we will all be close and her Autumn and holiday season, though bittersweet, will be a mostly happy time. The celebration of my father’s life through the memories will be very much at the forefront. Tears? Yes, some. But many more smiles and laughs. 🙂

The next 2 days will be a mix of getting some things caught up here at home as well as making the final preparations for Thursday/Friday. The beautiful weather will not be lost to us either as it will make it very pleasant for doing some of the errands we have. And will that weather be fantastic! The very late days of Summer can be some of the best of the entire year. We’ll feel just a bit more in the way of humidity by Saturday and Sunday as that front nears and then passes by, but it will not be all that bad even then. We do get a shot of cooler/dry air Monday and maybe a reinforcing surge middle of next week. After that I’m not super confident in details, obviously, but I am pretty certain we keep the warm to mild pattern and the generally dry regime. There may be a few packages of tropical moisture sitting offshore or to the south as we get to later in the month, so of course we’ll have to wait to see if anything comes out of those.

  2. This week is a bit of a contrast for me as well. Of course we have the wake and funeral for my father Thursday/Friday. On Saturday, I’m driving to north central VT for an outdoor (or in-barn) wedding on a farm. It’s a nearly 4 hour drive that I am making along with Emily (it’s a very close mutual friend getting married). And yes we are driving back at night after it’s all over.

The weather looks great so far. A front approaches there late Saturday but it looks like it may hold back and still then not even produce much in the area. For their set-up this week leading up to it – perfect weather. 🙂

    1. Sounds like the perfect get away for you after a busy and trying week. I bet the wedding will be beautiful. I love Vermont.

  3. Thanks, TK. You’re doing good – hang in there. And I am glad that the weather is cooperating with everything going on for you, too. A wedding in Vermont sounds lovely. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

  4. Thanks Tk 🙂 beautiful!!

Lol!! The jealousy patriot hater “Shank Shaunassey” is being used for bulletin board material for this weeks game against buffalo. 🙂 love it!!

  5. According to the 12z GFS…
Boston total precipitation through 225 hours: ZERO.
Boston total precipitation through 384 hours: 0.10-0.25 inch.
    Yes, it’s a dry pattern.

      1. I never said I rely on it that far out. I just happen to agree with the general pattern that it is also showing.

Besides, models can have periods of good accuracy and the opposite as well. When the European model was in a slump, I did not use it much. As meteorologists, part of what we do is figure out when these models are suffering, even if we don’t know the reason why.

  6. Ah yes it’s time for the annual September flying ant swarm. It usually takes place on a warm evening in early to mid September. The earliest one I remember was 1985 (September 3). This one is a little later than the average date if I remember correctly.

Almost looks like it’s snowing very lightly and blowing around, but nope – just flying ants.

      1. LOL .. One is stuck to my 2nd floor screen on the north-facing window as I type this. 😛 It better not rest too long. There’s action to be had! Lazy butt…

              1. Well a few beers and you might not notice.

I love that area. I love their outside gas fire pit thingies. I want one

    1. Upper 40s to lower 50s early week, lower to middle 50s after that. Daytimes upper 60s to lower 70s early week, middle to upper 70s later week. We undergo cool advection to start the week then the ridge returns, but we also have to watch a disturbance just to the south by around Thursday (24th) that will provide our only chance of wet weather during the next 10 days.

  7. Scary and sad story about the loss of life out on the Arizona / Utah border due to flash flooding. If I read the story correctly, sounds like a wall of water and debris swept away a couple vehicles that had women and children in them.

    1. Obviously, I don’t know the particulars of this case, but I’ve seen shows on national geographic that have detailed occasions where people have drowned in canyons and valleys out west, due to thunderstorms that happened miles and miles from the actual location of the downstream/downriver flood.

        1. I think given the topography out there, its a different scenario than we are used to here.

On a few of the national geographic shows I mentioned above, the ominous part was that it was difficult to tell in some instances that you were in a potential flash flood area. It didn’t quite look like a desert, but it didn’t appear as a dry stream or riverbed either.

  8. TK, my condolences to you and your family. Thank you for sharing details about this past week. It’s been a tough one for you.

It’s most definitely a dry and sunny pattern. The early evening light is at its very best in September and October. That’s my opinion at least. An example of this is Copley Square where between 6 and 7 in autumn the Trinity steeple (or top part of the church) is `illuminated’ by the sun setting to our west. The shadows, sunlight, clarity of the sky (no haze) make Copley Square one of the world’s finest this time of year. I’ve lived in many places and find Copley Square a gem; architecturally so incredibly diverse and so `real’ in terms of the masses that converge on the Square. This is not a `wedding cake’ square; like some of the squares in Vienna (bombastic, saccharine sweet, and unreal – not my style at all). From the homeless to the skateboarders to the tourists to the millionaire hedge fund managers leaving the John Hancock, everyone’s represented. Even the businesses in and around the Square run the gamut from places like Boloco’s, Wendy’s, CVS, LA Burdick’s, Globe and the Oak Room at the Fairmount Copley Place (I prefer the old style Oak Room, but hey I’m really old-fashioned).

    1. Very nice!! The new Copley tower is being built right there above neiman Marcus, beautiful tower!! I believe it’s under construction now?

    2. Nice Joshua. I agree about the sun setting this time of year…even down to trees surrounding us. But certainly the Trinty Steeple. As kids a treat for my brother and me was to go to the old Merry go round room in the Copley plaza. Of course we had a Shirley temple and Roy Rogers.

But the Altare della Patria …. Tough choice.

  9. Blue Hill is 62F, Worcester is 67F and Mt Washington is 55F.

Warm air above in the column, once the sun gains a bit of altitude, temps should soar quickly this morning.

    1. He isn’t one to pout about it. Give me a break.

      Warning…soap box out and manned.

I listened to his interview after the game. Regarding the shift, he didn’t think it was legal….well, maybe it was legal but he didn’t think so…but he heard somewhere it was legal. Seriously, Ben, you are a QB and you do not know what plays are legal??

Then he went on to say they’d watched a tape of the Pats using this play.

Did he not notice a flag WASN’T thrown making it legal.

But the worst take is that they watched the play. Let that sink in for a minute. They wanted the darned play and they didn’t prepare for it. This is what is wrong with the rest of the league. They are so busy whining about what the Pats do (legally) that they absolutely cannot focus on their own game.

As far as the headsets, there were multiple problems at different venues throughout the league last weekend. Not one was mentioned except the one here. And Tomlin now says he will put the headset issue to rest….AFTER he managed to feed the rest of the country who has shown that it doesn’t need facts to malign the Pats.

So Tomlin belly aches and BB simply prepares. There is footage of BB, well before any of this, during practice telling his coaches to take off their headsets and then resume practice.

It is why we win, folks. Why aren’t fans of other teams insisting their coaches and players emulate the Pats instead of crying?

There….I feel marginally better. We now continue with our regularly scheduled weather discussions 🙂

      1. Great post, Vicki. I used to respect Tomlin. Not anymore. I’ve never liked Ben. His reckless, predatory behavior towards women is loathsome. As a player he’s good, competitive, hard to bring down, but also a little clueless.

        1. And there is that also which disgusts me. I wonder if he would still be part of the Patriots organization with his history.

      2. You are a great fan, Vicki. There was an interesting discussion of the Felger radio show yesterday. There was a tape of Eli Manning explaining his confusion at the goal line as the game was ending and the Giants messed up totally on Sunday (or Monday night). He was so out-to-lunch it was amazing. The guest reporter who covers the NFL kept insisting that the players and coaches in the NFL were really just not that smart— except for Belichik– and Brady. Point was that the gap bw the Patriots and the rest in terms of IQ is really significant. Thus guy has been in the locker rooms for years. It was quite a discussion. H just kept coming back the this point.

        1. Sorry I missed that, MassBay, and thank you for recapping. It really does come down to that I think…that and when these coaches give the players an excuse for losing other than their play, the players will continue to fall back on that excuse rather than focus on the game.

  10. Vicki, thanks for sending the picture of the merry-go-round in the Oak Room. I probably went on the merry-go-round, too. My guess would be late 1960s, early 1970s.

  11. Vicki, your point about the Altare della Patria is well taken. I’ve also seen a lot of magnificent squares in Europe. However, my preference is for a square that doesn’t scream “look at me, I’m beautiful, and please don’t touch anything or else I’ll be blemished.” I love the combination of old and new beauty and even some grit.

    1. I agree, Joshua, and Copley Square is exactly what you have described. I had told SSK that we are thinking about a night in Boston. We are torn between waterfront (you know how I love a water view) and Copley Square.

  12. Good morning friends. I have updated the blog and you may now move over there and read about more fantastic September weather. 🙂
