Wednesday Forecast

7:21AM

DAYS 1-5 (MARCH 9-13)…
Warm front pushing through first thing the morning with clouds then opening door to the first day of 70+ for much of the region. Exceptions will be the South Coast through Cape Cod and the Islands which will not get above the 50s in most locations. Also, a few east-coast areas may fall short of 70 as well. Cold front sags southward into the region Thursday but may take most of the day to actually push through the region, even into the night or early morning Friday to completely clear the southern coastal areas as a wave of low pressure ripples along it first. Behind this a push of much cooler air arrives for Friday, but a quick turn around as a small area of high pressure then slides overhead and then to the south by Saturday, which will be a warmer day. And then another cold front arrives from the north as high pressure builds across eastern Canada to send the temperature back down again during Sunday.
TODAY: Clouds eastern MA and RI for a while early to mid morning may hang over Cape Cod into late morning. Otherwise, sun will dominate then give way to some clouds again from the west late in the day. Highs upper 60s to middle 70s most areas, warmest Merrimack Valley and southwestern NH, coolest eastern coastal areas, but only in the 50s South Coast through Cape Cod and Islands. Wind SW increasing to 10-20 MPH with higher gusts.
TONIGHT: Partly to mostly cloudy. Lows in the upper 40s to middle 50s. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.
THURSDAY: Mostly cloudy to cloudy. Chance of rain, especially northern MA and southern NH, favoring the afternoon hours. Highs middle 50s to lower 60s but may fall to the 40s southeastern NH and northeastern MA during the afternoon. Wind W 10-20 MPH and gusty, shifting to NNE in southern NH and northern MA during the day.
THURSDAY NIGHT: Cloudy with periods of rain. Lows in the 40s. Wind NW to NE 10-20 MPH.
FRIDAY: Any early rain ends then clouds breaking for sun. Temperatures holding in the 40s. Wind N 10-20 MPH and gusty.
SATURDAY: Partly cloudy. Lows in the 30s. Highs in the 50s.
SUNDAY: Mostly sunny. Temperatures fall to the 40s.

DAYS 6-10 (MARCH 14-18)…
Unsettled March 14-15, threat of rain but may end as mix in a few areas March 15 as it turns colder. Improving weather March 16 then fair with a warming trend March 17-18.

DAYS 11-15 (MARCH 19-23)…
Mild start to the period but with a chance of rain showers. Trending colder, briefly fair, then a chance of some storminess of rain/mix/snow later in the period.

  1. Thanks, TK.

I like the new look to the blog – not sure what it means – something to do with music. Nonetheless, looks like it is going to be a nice day!

    1. It’s a WP stock header, but I like it.
March 7 was the anniversary of my brother’s passing (1997). He was a bass player and the best older brother anyone could have wished for. Today is the anniversary of my good friend Brad’s passing (2007). Also, my son has been composing some incredible music of late. So it’s music on my mind, more now than ever.

(Many people knew Brad better as the lead singer of the band Boston, but I knew him as one of the nicest people you could have ever met.)

      1. Hugs and happy thoughts, TK. Enjoy this beautiful day in your brother’s and Brad’s honor.

  2. Thanks TK!
Between today’s beautiful warm fresh air and Lysol, I’m hoping my house will be free of any lingering flu germs.
I will NEVER neglect getting the flu shot, again!

    1. Feel better – this has been a brutal season. A friend of mine is in Kindred Hospital recovering from the flu that became life-threatening pneumonia. Don’t take things lightly!

      1. Thank you Flowergirl! I hope your friend is feeling better soon! Thankfully, I caught it quickly! I still have a cough that seems like it’ll never end.

    1. Logan was 50 at 8 AM with SouthWest wind at 15 mph.
      No sea breeze today.

Record is 72. I think we surpass that be 1-3 Degrees. 😀

  3. TK, I was a big fan of Boston growing up and went to several of their concerts. I was shocked to hear when Brad Delp passed away. He had a great voice and always seemed like a really nice guy when he was performing. How did you know him if you don’t mind me asking?

  4. 11 AM Logan temperature is 69 Degrees. It has been going up 7 Degrees per hour
for the last 2 hours. Of course it cannot keep up this pace, but between 11AM
and 2 or 3 PM, I sure think it can find a way to surpass the record of 72.

    1. I just checked the contest page. It is very interesting to note that
virtually all of us picked a date in March as the first 70 Degree day.
Pretty cool if you ask me.

    1. Nice.
Where do you find these things? Awesome.

Many, if not ALL reporting stations should eclipse their record highs.

        1. That’s a pretty cool map. I don’t think I have ever seen
one like that. Thanks again for sharing.

  5. NWS just up’ed the projected high at BDL to 78 today….I wonder if 80 is possible?
Currently 66 in Hartford at 11AM.

Dave where did you see it was 69 already in Boston – 11AM NWS obs. says 64?

    1. Here is where I got it.
But, ALAS it say 64 and not 69. I guess my eye sight is failing.

    1. Yeah… I don’t think they’ll stop there.
Too much gradient. We’ve seen before this phantom south to southeast wind even on a day like this, but I think today they have it now. I had my doubts at first…

    1. 74 at 12:40 in Nashua 😀 Took a walk, did NOT want to come inside. I wish this company gave me a laptop, I’d be working outside today for sure!

  8. Absolutely glorious day.

Discovered the glass table on our deck is smashed with glass all over the deck. Last year it broke from ice from roof. No idea what did it this year. I know it was fine last night. We were gone in the morning. Oddest thing.

    1. That stinks, sorry to hear Vicki. That happened to me one year – wind blew the umbrella over.

      1. We think spontaneous but no idea. Third glass table in three years (umbrella, then ice, then who knows what). Last glass I’ll get.

  9. Wow – 77 at BDL as of 1PM !!
Looks like 80 is going to become a reality. Record already shattered by 5 degrees.

    1. Are we close enough yet to 80 where I can get at least partial credit for my 80 degree call in March from like three weeks ago.

And I’m sticking with my RIP winter call too.

I get so much wrong, I have to seek glory when I can.

      1. Yes good call retrac on the early 80 degree day! I cant agree yet though that we are done with winter after looking at the teleconnections and models for the period of 3/18-2/25. We have a few cold days left ahead and a few days where we will see some flakes. Will there be another widespread significant snow event across SNE? Not out of the question but I wouldn’t put my money on it.

  10. TK, funny you said: We’ve seen before this phantom south to southeast wind even on a day like this

    1 PM obs from Logan.

SOUTH wind at 15 mph. Also SOUTH wind atop BlueHill.

SO Logan “may” not achieve the record afterall. It will be close.

FWIW, just came in from lunch. Car thermometer reading 75 Degrees!!

  11. We’ll have a lot of days like this as we head through the Spring. Most of them will be in April and beyond but we’ll crack 60 at least in most areas again this Saturday. A decided shift to cooler next week and possibly the week after that before we go back to a long-lasting warmer than normal pattern, along with the usual ocean-influenced modifications and an occasional lingering intrusion of polar air from Canada at times. 🙂

  12. Wind went back to SW at Logan.
    2PM obs, 74!!!! A record breaker!!

  13. Kane was closest…..by one day 🙁

I posted the guesses on the contest page and sorted by earliest to latest for 70 degree days.

Sue, will you please check yours. I copied one over to the contest page but of course neglected to credit it. I think it was yours. Sorry.

    1. Oh …the sad face was because if Kane had not said 3/12, I would have had it with 3/13. It didn’t mean I am not happy for you, Kane 🙂

      1. Its okay vicki, you might beat me in the first 80 or 90 degree contest, so there is still hope :p

  14. TK, I am sorry to hear about you losing your brother in 1997, and also your friend Brad Delp in 2007. Time has passed since then, but losses like these always remain with you.

    1. When I met with my son’s English teacher, I couldn’t help noticing the poster of the Beatles Let It Be album on her wall. Atop all of that, George Martin passed away yesterday.

  15. Earliest 80 degree temperature ever recorded at Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, CT
Tweet from Ryan Hanrahan about that
80F at BDL. Previous earliest 80F on record was March 20th

  16. 74F on March 9th. Goodness, gracious. That’s warm. Anything can and does happen in March, but 74F is truly an anomaly. We’ve had so many record-breaking days this winter, including -9F just a little over 3 weeks ago. Seems a distant memory, doesn’t it.

    1. You were close, JJ.

How many 60+ days have we had in December through early March? An astounding number.

    1. Felt like a sauna when I got in my car to run out a few minutes ago! Now the question is – how much higher we can go?

And it aint mostly cloudy here….its sunny with a few high thin cirrus clouds.

    1. Yes, would be great. Alas, we probably won’t have many. The positioning of today’s high would likely mean temps in the 90s in Boston in July or August, with humidity thrown into the mix.

  18. I think the people who love 3 weather are going to be very happy this summer. Past two summers have been great with no long spells of heat and humidity.

  19. It would be nice if these temps were on Easter Sunday. Of course with our luck it will probably be damp, chilly in the low-mid 40s.

  20. Talk about a temperature contrast: Jackman, Maine at the Canadian border, 54F and sunny; Quebec City, which is 2 hours north of Jackman (33F and light snow), Sept-Iles, which is several hours east of QC (16F and moderate snow). Notably, the tip of Northern Maine and far northeastern Maine are still below freezing, pretty much the only locales in the lower 48 that are below freezing on March 9th.

  21. I was just recalling the year (1998) it reached 90 in March. That was some crazy weather!

      1. 89 was the high for Logan. It may have touched 90 in a few
locations, but not officially at Boston.

  22. To answer the question about snow…
Of course it’s not off the table completely. Chances are limited, but we have a small window of 1 to 2 weeks starting next week. Teleconnections say ironically it may be one of the best set-ups we’ve had in a while, but it’s just so late in the season the chances will not likely be maximized.

    1. This Winter has been Nuts.

It would be a fitting end to Winter OR perhaps a Fitting beginning to
Spring, that we get nailed with one last Snow Storm.

I highly doubt it, but one never knows around these parts.

      1. Nope. One never knows. And many a mild El Nino Winter has ended with a late-season snowstorm. Not saying that locks it in, but keeps it on the table. The pattern gets really close to easily doing it, but will not quite make it there to the “easy” stage, possibly because the MJO factor has become almost negligible. It’s around the right phases for snow but almost neutral, just very weak. Other teleconnections point to late-season snow threat mid to late March. We’ll see where it goes.

I think the overall leaning is for a warm spring and very early summer.

  23. If that happens that would be vintage March where you get those spring like temps then a few days later snow flakes are flying and you could have an accumulating snow.

  24. 3PM Logan Obs. I am wondering if somewhere within the past hour it
    went to 76???

Exceeding the record by 3 or 4 degrees is borderline SMASHING the record!!

      1. OH Boy, our TV weather departments are sinking to new lows!
What ever will channel 7 do now??????????

  25. Question for all:

How many degrees does a record need to be broken by to categorize it as having
    been smashed?

I’m thinking 4 Degrees should qualify. Thoughts?

    1. Great question !

I wonder if it might be a different number depending on what record you broke.

For instance, a record high of say 99F in Boston is hard to break in any month at any time in Boston. So, if you were to hit 103F, that might be smashing it.

Conversely, having a record high of 60F in February. I can see the potential to break that by a bigger amount, more easily, even at one of the coldest times of the year.

    2. I have no answer to that. Somehow 4 feels normal….I’d say 10. Even then, I feel as if this is not unheard of for March so not sure what the big deal is. It is a lovely day. But we have swings in all of the inbetween seasons.

  26. Well, it happened again.

Way over performing expected high temps in a warm sector on a sunny day.

The next few to several weeks are so important for ground moisture. Can you imagine the precip deficits carrying forward into the summer and ending up under 582 to 588 dm 500 mb ridges with mostly sunny skies ….. Hello 100F

    1. For the first time ever I will have central air….not that I ever had a problem with the window ACs. So this could be quite interesting.

      1. We love our central AC. It can be a bit more expensive on the electricity draw, but you don’t go from one room at 74F to another at 88F.

        1. I don’t have central air, I have Natural Air, ie OPEN THE WINDOW!!

Seriously, I can deploy up to 4 Window units.

          1. We had four also and it worked well. But for kids rooms they had to leave doors open and with kids that isn’t always ideal 🙂

at 348 PM the temperature hit 77 degrees in boston ma.

this breaks the old record of 72 set back in 2000.

    1. If memory serves correct, that’s the average high temp at Logan pretty close to the summer solstice (somewhere in the June 15th to 20th timeframe) and then again in very late August to early September.

  29. The high of 81 at Bradley normal for the first day of summer according to a weather blog written by meteorologist Bruce Deprest from our CBS station in CT.

  30. Had a fun day today. After several years of wanting to replace our front door unit we were able to get it done by a great contractor who put in the new unit with two side window panels without a hitch. We had been told the opening was too tight for side windows on both edges but this person made it all fit beautifully. Of course now that we CAN keep the heat in we are edging toward wanting to keep more of it out… Time to call him back to put on a screen door for ventilation! 🙂

    1. Sounds lovely. Always nice when things work out. I recommend a pocket storm Door. They are great

  31. Logan jumped back up to 66F at the 1am ob this morning, so, even if their temp slowly coasts down today or drops quickly because of onshore flow, 66F will be the high temp for March 10th.
