Wednesday Forecast

7:19AM

DAYS 1-5 (JUNE 1-5)…
Welcome to June, the first day of hurricane season (though we’ve already had 2 named storms this year), the first day of meteorological summer (though we’ve already had some summery weather and summer’s actual beginning is still 20 days away). 🙂 Regardless of what we label today, the weather is still what it is, and we’ll be seeing a cooling trend the next couple days as the winds turn northerly to easterly. Sunshine will dominate today and cloudiness will prevail for at least part of Thursday, thanks to low level ocean moisture coming in. By Friday, a cold front approaching from the west will shift winds to the south and bring the chance of showers. Timing is uncertain on the showers but will fine-tune that as best as possible by tomorrow. The weekend looks like a split at this point, with high pressure bringing nice weather Saturday and approaching low pressure bringing a return to cloudiness and eventually wet weather at some point on Sunday.
TODAY: Mostly sunny. Highs upper 60s to middle 70s, coolest eastern coastal areas. Wind N shifting to E 5-15 MPH.
TONIGHT: Increasing clouds east to west. Lows middle to upper 50s. Wind E up to 10 MPH.
THURSDAY: Mostly cloudy to partly sunny. Highs middle 60s to lower 70s, coolest eastern coastal areas. Wind E to SE 5-15 MPH.
FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showres. Lows in the 60s. Highs middle 60s to lower 70s.
SATURDAY: Partly cloudy. Lows in the 50s. Highs upper 60s to middle 70s.
SUNDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of rain by late in the day. Lows in the 50s. Highs middle 60s to lower 70s.

DAYS 6-10 (JUNE 6-10)…
Departing low pressure brings a chance of showers early June 6. Another disturbance brings another chance of showers later June 7 into June 8. Fair weather June 9-10. Temperatures mostly below normal for this period.

DAYS 11-15 (JUNE 11-15)…
A couple rounds of showers mixed with periods of fair weather. Temperatures near to below normal overall.

  1. Thanks TK!

I’ll take these below normal temps over HHH any day. We are getting into the season now that even along the immediate coast a light jacket isn’t necessary. 🙂

  2. Good morning and what a beautiful morning and by most accounts on here a perfect stretch of weather on the way.

    1. And last but never least …thank you.

Was lost somewhere in my overloaded and sleep fuzzy mind. Sorry.

  3. Good morning and thank you Tk for the Wednesday update.

It was rough watering my new lawn this morning as I was trying to direct
the spray directly into the NE to ENE wind which was rather robust. There was mist blowing off for 60 feet no matter how I adjusted the spray. Even so, it was NOT a cold wind as it would be earlier in the season. Very comfortable.

At 8AM, it was 72 at my house in JP. It was 69 at Logan 8AM.

I am hoping that Logan cracks 70. We shall see.

    How bout them Sox?

3 Homers for Betts! Awesome! And not to mentions a nicely pitched game by
the returning Rodriguez. Very nice to see and very very welcomed.

    1. Boston, Logan made 70 as of the 9AM obs with a NORTHEAST wind
at 10 mph. That is pretty impressive. Just goes to show HOW much the
Ocean has warmed so far this Spring.

  4. Came across these words on a technical website:

A bus station is where a bus stops. A train station is where a train stops. On my desk, I have a work station.

Pretty funny, if you ask me.

  5. 10AM at Logan, still holding at 70 with Wind NorthEast at 12.7 mph.

Fantastic. Already exceeded the predicted high temperature. I love that!

    1. Thank you.

I had NEVER seen that. HILARIOUS.

Lou Costello was such a Natural filming this bit.

      Awesome!

      1. You’re welcome and I’m glad you enjoyed. I suspected you would 🙂 I had not seen it either, JPD. It was a natural comedy, wasn’t it.

        1. Indeed. Incredible!!!

You could almost see the smirk on Costello’s face.
          I loved it.

Although it had nothing to do with school and homework or math, I almost wanted to post the famous
“Who’s on First” bit by Abbot and Costello. 😀

    1. I was just going to post that. I guess 70 will be the “official” high at Logan for the day. 🙂

      1. Unless in between a couple of the hours from 8 to 11, it snuck up
        to 71. 😀

But it sure appears 70 may do it.

However, “should” the wind switch to South of East somewhat, especially SE, then it would be possible for it to creep up a couple of Degrees.
        Time will tell.

      2. The official high temp at Logan today (Wednesday) will be somewhere between 73F and 76F because it was 76F at the 11:54pm ob last night and still 73F at 12:54am.

  6. JP Dave, looks like perfect grass growing weather for the next 7-10 days…65-75 degrees of fair weather with some showers mixed in 🙂

    1. I have so much new grass I don’t know what to do with it!

It is over 6 inches high already. I had to call the landscaper yesterday
to make sure he was coming to cut it.

AND I was worried it wasn’t going to come up. WOW! is all I have to say.

I can’t stand watering the lawn, so I wouldn’t mind some periodic showery
weather, preferably at NIGHT of course. 😀

      1. At this point, after the first cut, u only really need to water ~1 inch one time/week, more during hot stretches

        1. Thanks for the tip.
How does one know that they have laid down 1 inch?
I just water until I think it is wet enough. 😀

          1. I usually put an empty tuna can down in the path of the sprinkler, once its full you’re good.

      2. In fact, too much water at this point can be counterproductive and promote shallow rooting. Deeper watering less often is the way to go now for good root development 🙂

        1. Yes, I am aware of shallow rooting, which we do not want. Deep rooting helps the grass survive dry periods.

Until this point I was afraid NOT to water it. Again, many thanks for the tip re: tuna can.

Since we don’t eat tuna, I will have to improvise. I guess a soup can will suffice. 😀

Again, I do appreciate the advice, seriously.

          1. Anytime. I wish I took my own advice sometimes. A lot of this lawn care stuff is easier said than done as it requires so much time and effort. Growing up, my dad always took meticulous care of our lawn and i remember him coming home from work and heading outside to water or pick weeds or something. It was an everyday thing. When I get home from work, all i wanna do is sit down with a beer and relax, lol

                1. I wouldn’t be without one. But then again, I keep my grass like a golf course. I’m OCD on my grass, for better or worse.

                1. I’ve fired 2 in the last 3 months. There are so many out here but a good one is tough to find.

                2. I don’t know if you saw that I went with one whose work always looks exceptional but he quoted me $1375 for weeding beds (which are in good shape to begin with), edging and mulching.

            1. Ace my dad did the same. Mac and I were diligent but now I wonder why. My advice in hindsight is you are wise to spend the time relaxing and being with your bride and friends.

  7. Not that we need much further proof that it has been dry but check out these precip deficits for the past year in SNE, for the period ending yesterday. Parts of CT have been particularly dry, averaging 10-15 inches below normal for the period. And it looks like these deficits are only going to get bigger as we move into summer.

      1. Ha ha, yeah that guy lives only a few miles away from me. Ironic that with all his talk about the extremes here that our county would be rated the safest!

  8. Reports police are investigating a reported shooting on UCLA campus. The news is saying possibly two students “down” and the shooter still at large.

  9. 1PM obs at Logan, 67.
    1PM in JP 69.4

BUT, still feels great outside with plenty of sunshine.

      1. Im at 75.7 at my house, so no ocean influence out there. I went to lunch here in central square around 12:30 and the wind about blew my head off. Almost needed a light jacket. Yes, 65 is awesome in April, but June, not so much

  10. Vicki and JPD…..my 4th grader just recently showed me that Abbot and Costello clip. I had never seen it before and he said his math teacher showed it to the class. I love it!

      1. He does have a great sense of humor. He showed it to the class after he showed the Who’s on First skit. They were having a Red Sox day at school and this is what the math lesson consisted of for the day.

          1. Yes indeed.

I saw something earlier today where someone
tried a take off on that using rock band names.

Something like Who’s on first. Yes? No, they’re
            on second. etc etc.

            1. I guess it was supposed to be the line up
for concert discussing the order in which the bands would perform.

Interesting. I’ll have to dig it up.

I’ll be we can add to it and make it better.

    1. Well, it isn’t much comfort as 2 lives were lost, but at least it wasn’t
      some sort of terrorist act.

        1. I never could understand that either, not that taking any life makes any sense other than self-defense.

  11. 4PM Logan = 63!! A preview of tomorrow, I am afraid.

On another similar note, the Ocean has not responded much today, but we didn’t lose ground either.

    Current water temperatures

Boston Buoy (BOSTON 16 NM East of Boston, MA)
    Water Temperature (WTMP): 58.8 °F

    Stellwagen (Mass. Bay/Stellwagen Bank)
    Water Temperature (WTMP): 59.0 °F

Cape Cod ( 24 NM East of Provincetown, MA )
    Water Temperature (WTMP): 56.5 °F

Gulf of Maine (78 NM East of Portsmouth, NH)
    Water Temperature (WTMP): 53.1 °F

    Nantucket (54NM Southeast of Nantucket)
    Water Temperature (WTMP): 55.9 °F

MONTAUK POINT (23 NM SSW of Montauk Point, NY)
    Water Temperature (WTMP): 61.0 °F

Texas Tower (75 NM East of Long Beach, NJ )
    Water Temperature (WTMP): 65.8 °F

The ocean is TRULY, ever so slowly, WARMING UP.

  12. 12Z Euro still not great, but shows “some” improvement over yesterday’s runs.
We shall see. All hope is not lost.

BUT, one way or the other, no real Warmth in site.

    1. It seems that unless we get full blown HHH we never get any real warmth that everyone can agree on.

      1. I think you know what I mean by no real warmth….

Euro shows mid to upper 60s to mid-upper 70s at best on the good days.

What I mean by warmth is consistent 80s, not necessarily 90s. I would just as soon never see 90s. My perfect Summer day is reasonably dry (Dew points 55-62) and about 86 degrees.

        1. We’re on the same page. My sustained warmth is mid 70’s to mid 80’s with no more of this high in the 60’s crap.
Lest we forget, a year ago today the region had highs in the upper 40’s and a cold pouring rain for a couple days. Today was quite awesome compared to that disaster.

      1. Just reminds me of a movie I have seen, “13 Going on 30”, starring
        Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo.

If you have seen the movie, then you know EXACTLY what
        I mean. 😀 😀 😀

      2. Hehe

Well it isn’t a weather station or a weather system…too little to be either. So I thought thingy gave the best picture. However, on second thought …..maybe not so much.

  13. The NWS out taunton seems to think unsettled and cool weather commences Sunday and potentially doesn’t clear until Thursday depending upon weather the trough breaks down fast enough. I don’t mind a sunny 70 degree day. It’s the cloudy damp weather that sticks around for 3 or more days that gets to me. Again, we have no control over it.

    1. Their summarizing points seem to conflict with the dailies.

The low pressure area seems to be projected to be to our north, so, I don’t think it should be too bad. With a westerly wind, Boston and coastal areas should be fairly mild. I don’t think early next week will be too bad.

    2. “Unsettled” can mean diurnal clouds and pop up showers, and that would be the case here. We’re not looking at a return to the omega block in which case we were in east wind, wet weather, and overcast, for several days. And when they say “cool”, they mean that the average temperature will fall shy of the 30 year climate average. People will find the weather during much of that stretch, except Sunday, rather nice overall, other than having to dodge some showers.

  14. I have a business lunch tomorrow down at the Envoy hotel in the seaport district. I might freeze to death down there by the water 😉

    1. But you’ll be wearing a suit jacket……or at least a sports jacket. Won’t you be toasty 🙂

      1. Naw, not that formal. We’re a bunch of scientists. Our normal daily attire is Levis and a button up shirt. July and August it’s t shirts and shorts. We all have PhDs and could give rats behind what we look like 🙂
The MBA’s, marketing, and sales wear the monkey suits. Without us sloppy dressed folks they wouldn’t have projects to manage or products to sell.

          1. I must live in a different Ph.D. World 🙂

Me….I like comfortable attire but I’m a throwback to the era where you dressed for everything. You could say I’m torn between two worlds. Used to drive my mom nuts.

            1. I don’t even own a suit. I have 2 sport coats and a couple pairs of dress pants. Otherwise it’s 501’s, shorts and button up shirts. If I had to wear a tie and coat everyday, I’d do something else.

              1. That is one of the reasons I work from home. In my era girls wore dresses. It was maybe early 1970s before they could wear a proper pants suit to work and not a dress. I was a tom boy. I raced cars. I put worms and frogs on hooks.

I had to “dress” every day until I was able to work from home in 1981. So I completely understand where you are coming from.

  15. Vicki, rent or otherwise view
13 going on 30 for a nice little chuckle given your comment about your “weather station”.

  16. Western and Central Europe have been suffering from severe and deadly storms, but also enormous amounts of rain. In many parts of France, the most rain in the month of May in over 150 years. Oddly, the Atlantic region of Brittany has been spared the heavy rain. Normally, they receive the brunt of wet weather as systems move from west to east. Evidently, an anomalous pattern has set up which has seen systems meander from east to west or stay stationary. The rain is impacting the French Open and may affect the European Cup, which France hosts this month. It’s generally viewed as the second biggest soccer event (South Americans may beg to differ!), the first being the World Cup.

    http://www.thelocal.fr/20160531/paris-suffers-wettest-month-since-1873-but-brittany-remains-dry

    1. The pattern anomaly is a result of the transition out of strong El Nino. Similar patterns have occurred in the past after El Nino events. The magnitude of this one is directly related to the magnitude of El Nino, as was the warmth at the north poles this winter.

Interestingly enough, we’ve only been seriously studying El Nino for 50 years, and 150 years (for the rain record) is but a blink of an eye in human history which has always been impacted by weather, so these events, though very significant, must be put into perspective, or they will be taken to mean a great deal more than they actually do.

  17. A new post awaits you early risers, and anyone that rises after that too. 😛
