  1. Thank you TK! I love being first. Although, it is a little sad because I’m done reading for now.

    1. I guess that means the 2016-17 snow season is officially over as far as WHW is concerned.

      Logan = 47.6″ (+3.8″)

  2. Good morning and thank you for the update TK.

    When I awoke at 7 it was 32, when I left the house at 8 it was 41 and by the time I reached the office, it was 45. Rapid rise in temperature, UNTIL the famous Facuckta
    EAST wind kicks in. The most dreaded Springtime wind direction for the City of Boston!!!!

      1. I CURSE the East wind this time of year, but yet in the dead of SUMMER the East wind is a friend. Go figure.

  3. Thank you, TK

    “The sun came out today! We’re born again! There’s new grass on the field!”

    …Put me in, Coach! I’m ready to play today!”

    Opening Day!!!!

    Go Sox!

  4. Diabolical thought this morning triggered by part of a movie I saw yesterday.
    I presume it was a totally fictitious event, but there was a plane on an island
    with the atom bomb on it. They were talking about a genocide bomb capable of killing
    hundreds of thousands of persons. So this triggered a thought this morning:

    What if the Americans dropped the atom bomb down the crater of Mt. Fuji, instead
    of on Hiroshima and Nagasaki???? I was wondering if we could have ended the war
    with FAR LESS lives lost just by the Powers to be in Japan witnessing the destructive
    power of that bomb???? Just my thought for the day fwiw.

    1. I will tell you why not. Mount Fuji is far closer to Tokyo than Hiroshima and Nagasaki. You would have to fly into enemy territory far longer and increase the risk. Even excluding that – the Japanese witnessed the destructive power of the bomb in Hiroshima and did not surrender. It was only after Nagasaki three days later that surrender was discussed.

      Also from a military point of view, Hiroshima had a military base and Nagasaki was an important port for the Japanese war effort. It made sense to obliterate them to get them to surrender and even if they didn’t to cripple them in the process. (other fun facts: They chose places that hadn’t been blitzed much by planes in the war… And Nagasaki wasn’t their original second choice city. But weather conditions and cloud cover in Kokura spared that city.)

      1. Thank you for your thoughtful comment. I really do appreciate that. In all honesty, your comment actually makes me feel a little better. I wish there could have been a better way, but if the Japanese command was that stubborn, I guess there was no choice.

        But your comment of: You would have to fly into enemy territory far longer and increase the risk

        Is probably the real reason.

        Thanks again

        1. You’re welcome. And when it comes to big military decisions it’s never one particular reason. If Mount Fuji was proposed they would have a… Mountain of reasons. No strategic military value. Area was targeted during bombing runs so would be more fortified. Plane would need to go to a higher elevation to deploy payload. Plane would need to account for different airspeed, atmosphere, etc. Plane would need to fly longer in enemy territory.

          If you engage in the fantasy of dropping bombs into mount Fuji – imagine how the nuclear fallout would have travelled in the Chūbu region (fallout which the after effects were little known at the time.) Also imagine that pitch: “Sirs, we can either scorch a mountain and take a little bit off the top or we can level a strategic military target and decimate the enemy. Which do you think has the best chance of surrender?”

          That was the other point I neglected to mention. An atomic bomb wouldn’t do much visual damage to the landscape of a giant mountain like Fuji. If anything it would embolden Japan more that a national wonder was scarred a little and then you have one less of your precious little atomic bombs.

          I guess I could take about theoretical situations at length. 😉

          1. I am having a tremendous amount of difficulty referring to you either here or elsewhere as Dr Stupid. I’d say you are anything but….

  5. Thank you, TK.

    JPD – very interesting thought. I have a few other ideas for what to drop down a crater that might be even more diabolical.

            1. And perhaps I mean who There are a lot of whos in whoville.

              On a serious note. What was name of movie, JPD. Was just telling daughter your comment and she thinks it is same movie she and husband saw a week or so agao. She has recommended it for me to see but then said, although it was excellent, it was intense. I am not into intense at the moment.

              1. Sorry, can’t for the life of me remember nor can I find it.
                Tell me the name and perhaps it will jog my memory. 😀

  6. Re: atom bomb: I have always been confused why they chose to bomb cities directly instead of Japanese military installments. They wouldn’t be able to keep fighting us if they didn’t have a military!

    1. Proven tactic…fastest way to bring government compliance is to pressure from the people. It worked.

  7. In Celebration of Opening Day:

    Casey at the Bat
    Ernest Lawrence Thayer

    The outlook wasn’t brilliant for the Mudville nine that day:
    The score stood four to two, with but one inning more to play,
    And then when Cooney died at first, and Barrows did the same,
    A pall-like silence fell upon the patrons of the game.

    A straggling few got up to go in deep despair. The rest
    Clung to the hope which springs eternal in the human breast;
    They thought, “If only Casey could but get a whack at that—
    We’d put up even money now, with Casey at the bat.”

    But Flynn preceded Casey, as did also Jimmy Blake,
    And the former was a hoodoo, while the latter was a cake;
    So upon that stricken multitude grim melancholy sat,
    For there seemed but little chance of Casey getting to the bat.

    But Flynn let drive a single, to the wonderment of all,
    And Blake, the much despisèd, tore the cover off the ball;
    And when the dust had lifted, and men saw what had occurred,
    There was Jimmy safe at second and Flynn a-hugging third.

    Then from five thousand throats and more there rose a lusty yell;
    It rumbled through the valley, it rattled in the dell;
    It pounded on the mountain and recoiled upon the flat,
    For Casey, mighty Casey, was advancing to the bat.

    There was ease in Casey’s manner as he stepped into his place;
    There was pride in Casey’s bearing and a smile lit Casey’s face.
    And when, responding to the cheers, he lightly doffed his hat,
    No stranger in the crowd could doubt ‘twas Casey at the bat.

    Ten thousand eyes were on him as he rubbed his hands with dirt;
    Five thousand tongues applauded when he wiped them on his
    shirt;
    Then while the writhing pitcher ground the ball into his hip,
    Defiance flashed in Casey’s eye, a sneer curled Casey’s lip.

    And now the leather-covered sphere came hurtling through the
    air,
    And Casey stood a-watching it in haughty grandeur there.
    Close by the sturdy batsman the ball unheeded sped—
    “That ain’t my style,” said Casey. “Strike one!” the umpire said.

    From the benches, black with people, there went up a muffled
    roar,
    Like the beating of the storm-waves on a stern and distant shore;
    “Kill him! Kill the umpire!” shouted someone on the stand;
    And it’s likely they’d have killed him had not Casey raised his
    hand.

    With a smile of Christian charity great Casey’s visage shone;
    He stilled the rising tumult; he bade the game go on;
    He signaled to the pitcher, and once more the dun sphere flew;
    But Casey still ignored it and the umpire said, “Strike two!”

    “Fraud!” cried the maddened thousands, and echo answered
    “Fraud!”
    But one scornful look from Casey and the audience was awed.
    They saw his face grow stern and cold, they saw his muscles
    strain,
    And they knew that Casey wouldn’t let that ball go by again.

    The sneer is gone from Casey’s lip, his teeth are clenched in hate,
    He pounds with cruel violence his bat upon the plate;
    And now the pitcher holds the ball, and now he lets it go,
    And now the air is shattered by the force of Casey’s blow.

    Oh, somewhere in this favoured land the sun is shining bright,
    The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light;
    And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children
    shout,
    But there is no joy in Mudville—mighty Casey has struck out.

    1. Was tons of fun to read and is easy to not “see” the formatting. As a child, I knew this word for word. Now, I’m not sure I’d get through the first two lines. It is perfect for today. Thank you.

  8. Just because the word “snow” is not in this blog does not mean I have declared the “snow season ” over.

    I know better.
    You know better.
    WE know better.

    1. How much better could you possibly state this, yet some people want
      to declare the SNOW season OVER. 😀 Sure it very well may be, but then again, we are in New Enland and awfully close to a cold air source. ’nuff said.

    2. I’m just being cheeky. I know you don’t consider snow out of the possibility even in the heat of August. I mean, aliens could arrive and warp our atmosphere. You have to be measured in your meteorological world. 😉

      1. Maybe the reason TK is so good is that he is an ALIEN? 😀

        The first extra terrestrial meteorologist.

  9. Unfortunately there were 2 deaths in yesterday’s Louisiana tornadoes. A mother and her 3 year old daughter were killed as their mobile home flipped. My thoughts go out to the family and any other people injured yesterday.

  10. Not out of the realm of possibility parts of SNE see 75-80 next Tuesday/Wednesday and then wet snow flakes a few days later on Easter Sunday 🙂

  11. We’re soon entering backdoor cold front season – fun time of year to be a forecaster with plenty of people relying on temperature forecasts! I’m fine with a few 80 degree days but cooler days in spring are a personal favorite. And HHH time is just scary to think about, sitting here in 50 degree weather on Opening Day.

  12. TK – Has there ever been more than one snow event during the month of April locally?

    Maybe I am remembering wrong, but all I can recall is that one biggie or very minor snow event in April, then we are usually done. Was there snow in April 1977?

    We have so much weather history here in NE…so many years have passed. 🙂

    1. We had back to back snow events here in northern CT just last year on April 3 and 4 (two separate storms). Got 4″ from the first storm and 5″ from the second at my house. I don’t recall what it did in Boston for the those systems but I thought you had at least some accumulation from both.

  13. Just returned to the office.
    My thermometers at home were reading 58 adn 60.
    My car thermometer on the way back was reading 60.

    Did we over achieve once again?

    What’s the airport? 43? 😀 😀 😀

    1. Close, 48!

      Logan is the ARM PIT of Massachusetts! What a freaking JOKE!!!!!!!

  14. Thank you, TK.

    Just checking in briefly with WHW, and see lots of tidbits of information on everything from weather to baseball to nuclear bombs. Regarding the latter, there was no easy solution. The Japanese committed unimaginable atrocities across a wide swath of Asia – as did the Germans across Europe – and were a formidable and stubborn foe (as were the Germans). I detest the idea of killing innocent civilians in order to end war, but in reality there probably wasn’t a `better’ solution.

    Onto baseball, it’s a fine early April day for the return of my favorite sport. It’s great to know that baseball will be with us on a regular basis for at least the next 6 months.

    As for the weather, today could not be nicer. This said, we’re in for several soakers this week and lots of volatility next week.

  15. Just heard the “Fly Over”. Looked out the window, but I guess it was facing the wrong
    direction.

    Let’s PLAY BALL!!!

        1. Totally agree. I just wish he were a little bigger, then
          he’d hit a zillion home runs. As it is, I think he will
          be a 15-20 type guy.

          1. We don’t need him to hit a ton of HR’s (although it would be nice). As long as he’s a clutch hitter and stays humble, he’ll quickly become a fan favorite

    1. Hi Vicki, I keep hesitating to leave a message for you because it’s always late at night and I think you won’t see it – but in any case, my location is Marblehead. Thank you for making this list, it’s so helpful and so interesting!

      1. I definitely see it and will add you also. Thank you!

        Now if someone who see about getting me to go to sleep earlier, it would be great 🙂

  16. Top of 7th, Boston 5-3. I don’t like it that they allowing Pittsburg back into the game.
    They need to put them away!

    1. It’s the Red Sox, never easy.

      Now, this means Kimbrel and at least 2 walks in the 9th 🙂 🙂 🙂

  17. Whelp, I guess my town thinks snowfall and icy road conditions are over until next year…they have begun town-wide streetsweeping

    1. When we were in framingham last week, knowing a storm was coming on Friday, they were cleaning the streets. Crazy

    1. Sox win 5-3! 🙂
      Sorry TK but the only local team that I “trust” are the Patriots, and they scare me sometimes. Just being a typical Boston sports fan! 😀

      1. That’s a new-school typical Boston sports fan. An old-school fan like myself has trust in the teams and stays with them through good times and bad. 😀

        The truth is, as a sports town, we’ve become a bit spoiled in the last decade plus… I don’t think many people realize how good we’ve actually had it and have a hard time accepting that it won’t last forever. 😉

        I saw the Celtics great 80s teams and their more recent victory, though I’m not a huge basketball fan – I still enjoyed it.

        The Bruins, well I have been alive for 3 cups but I really only remember one (2011) vividly. They took us on some wild rides through the years and even though we’ve seen them lose in the finals a few times, it’s been totally worth it.

        The Patriots just plain have us spoiled. Ride the wave before it breaks.

        The Red Sox provided us with the greatest series comeback in history on their way to breaking the curse in 2004, then gave us 2 more series wins since.

        If I never saw another championship from a major sports team, I’d be happy with what I have witnessed. But I can tell you right now we’re not done with this winning era…

        1. Yes, they were. Back when we could ride from one end of the town to another and no one worried

  18. Today was a beautiful day at the ballpark. Nice weather, the kid goes yard, Porcello looks great, JBJ with yet another amazing catch, and most of all, a win!

    Speaking of JBJ, love that he switched to #19. Fred Lynn was probably the best all-around CF this team ever had, but JBJ just might be better, especially with the glove.

    1. I can totally see that happening provided things break down the way I think right now…

      But given that it’s April in the Northeast, I won’t hold my breath yet.

  19. Re: Sox
    They will be fine. They have enough pitching and offense and they have a solid defense with perhaps rlthe best outfield in the game.

    1. Hi, Longshot. I sure will. I have two others also above. My computer was shut down for the day but I have a reminder set for you all tomorrow.

      I’m also stalling to see if I get a few more 🙂

  20. TK – Based on your response above (@7:40 pm), does this mean that you are almost ready to officially declare the SNE snow season over? 😉

    You have probably been doing it here since you created this blog, but can you make annual “official” declarations of the end of snow season in your daily Discussions or on a separate post? 🙂

    1. The snow season runs from July 1 to June 30. By definition, it has no space between end and beginning, therefore the answer is no I cannot.

      In Woburn I have recorded measurable snow as late as May 18. Hail is included in the “snow” statistics and given that hail can easily occur and be measurable in May and June, as well as July through September, you can surely understand why this is not even a notion to consider.

  21. These are additions to the location list I will make tomorrow

    Anyone else.

    MassBay west newton (aka near the rest)
    Oceanair Marblehead
    CarryChase3 E Lexington
    Longshot newton lower falls

  22. I need to clarify something that is never mentioned by the media…

    The statistics for “snowfall” are not actually just for snow. If you look at official records, which nobody can really see unless they obtain official recording forms from the state climatologists, the category is actually “frozen precipitation”, and includes all forms of snow, ice pellets, and hail. This is the CORRECT way to do this. The delineation is between frozen and unfrozen precipitation with frozen being counted as its own category but melted being the inclusion of all liquid and frozen precipitation.

    If you want to talk about actual snowfall, yes there is typically a time of year in most locations in which you won’t see it beyond a certain date, or before a certain date prior to the typical start of the season, but there are exceptions where it occurs outside of these “typical” times. And since the edges are so fuzzy, you cannot really drawn a solid line in any place and say that it cannot snow before or after this date. I feel that we have a little bit too much of an obsession with this not only on this blog but in general.

    It’s just weather observation. Whatever happens, happens, and we record it as it is. Snow (and any other kind of weather) does not give a crap whether you like it love it hate it loathe it or whatever. It just occurs because it’s a natural process of the atmosphere. Nothing more, nothing less.

    1. When a layperson says “no more snow” they mean “no more flakes gathering into a cluster needing to be shoveled.” They do not mean all the other stuff you mentioned. Hail, sleet, ice cubes… That’s neither here nor there. When people ask “is this the last of the snow?” They merely mean “are we done with winter type weather? Has spring finally sprung?” It’s just a natural process of the human longing for relief from cold snowy days. Nothing more, nothing less. 😉

      1. Yes, indeed, and even that answer is fuzzy (TK’s words) at best. I would never declare our snow season over on April 4th. Could it be? sure, but no one can guarantee that.

      2. I know what they mean, but the atmosphere prevents the answer they want. Time for them to learn to deal. 🙂

  23. Pretty impressive slug of rain about to move in.

    https://radblast.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/radar/WUNIDS_map?station=BOX&brand=wui&num=10&delay=15&type=N0R&frame=0&scale=1.000&noclutter=0&showstorms=0&mapx=400&mapy=240&centerx=400&centery=240&transx=0&transy=0&showlabels=1&severe=0&rainsnow=0&lightning=Hide&smooth=0&rand=24855043&lat=0&lon=0&label=you

    0.19 inch so far here in JP. Started about 3AM. I actually woke up because I thought I heard some sleet on the window. When I looked, it appeared to be just rain. Can’t totally rule out that there were few sleet pellets at the outset. I don’t know fo rsure, BUT I DID hear something.

  24. I have four more edits to the name and town list.

    Does anyone want to be added? Please just put info here. If I don’t achknowdge it, I didn’t see it so poke me …..thanks
