Tuesday Forecast

7:32AM

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 18-22)
High pressure to the north of New England sends a northeasterly flow into southern New England today, which then shifts more southeasterly by Wednesday. Low pressure approaches from the west later Wednesday into Thursday but weakens during its passage over the region. A second, slightly stronger low comes along with its center probably passing just to the south of the region Friday and lingering offshore into Saturday. The trend is for cooler and eventually more unsettled weather with this pattern.
TODAY: Sun to start, then clouds moving in from the ocean (northeast to southwest) more solidly in the NH Seacoast and eastern MA coastal areas and less so further south and west. Highs 48-55 but may drop to the lower 40s eastern coastal areas later in the day. Wind NE to E 5-15 MPH.
TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy eastern areas, partly cloudy western areas. Lows 38-45. Wind E 5-15 MPH.
WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny to mostly cloudy. Highs 45-52 eastern areas, 52-60 western areas. Wind E to SE 5-15 MPH.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Chance of rain. Lows 43-50. Wind SE to S 5-15 MPH.
THURSDAY: Mainly cloudy. Chance of rain/drizzle. Highs 48-55. Wind variable 5-15 MPH.
FRIDAY: Cloudy. Chance of rain/drizzle. Lows 40-50. Highs 45-55.
SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of rain showers. Lows 38-48. Highs 48-58.

DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 23-27)
A break with some sun possible April 23. Rain risk returns April 24. Showers may linger at times April 25-27. Temperatures variable, likely coolest with respect to normal early in the period and somewhat milder later.

DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 28-MAY 2)
A drier trend with temperatures near to below normal.

  1. Good morning and thank you TK.

So far, I don’t mind the weather today. It is decidedly cooler, however, for now
there is ample sunshine. I can take the cool IF there is sunshine. Throw in the clouds and drizzle, then deliver it to Woburn where it is welcomed and keep it there.

So the B’s lost yet again. Too bad. The absence of all of those players is haunting them. They would be up 3 games to none with a full compliment of players. Did I make an excuse? Apparently I did, but those are the facts.

    1. Water temperature off shore is 45.7. Although I would like to see it higher,
it could be a lot worse. 😀 With sunshine, coastal temps would be in
the low to mid 50s. However, with clouds and rain and/or drizzle, then we’re
looking at mid 40s or worse. YUCK!

  2. The B’s did not show up to play
the celtics did not help Thomas out in that game
Remeber I do not watch basketball that much so do not know much but I know when you are suppose to freaking shoot the ball lol
Hockey I have watched and like and know when you are suppose to freaking pass the puck off to another teammate.

  3. Thanks TK.
Thanks Vicki…. Mother Nature has given me a very nice present for my birthday with plenty of sunshine.

  4. I’ve seen people on social media complaining how crappy April has been so far.

Now I’m convinced they are just plain nuts. 😛

    1. I don’t understand this word crappy. And yes, I know I keep saying it, but then it seems to bear repeating because I am hearing the same, TK. I thought about it last night for a bit trying to understand how you couldn’t love each day. Maybe the beauty in this life is so simple that it is easy to take for granted. I think I love all aspects because I truly believe appreciation is a gift from those we have lost throughout out lives. Maybe..in my fanciful mind..it is even a foretelling of what is to come. Either way, I have no idea how this month could be considered crappy.

      1. 99% of these people would not last a day in many parts of the world without losing it if they think New England spring weather is so miserable.

They’re spoiled and/or can’t appreciate our natural variability in this location. 🙂

They don’t have to like or share this idea, but that’s what it is. 🙂

        1. I’m simply just glad to be here to enjoy whatever the day brings. Weather is too unpredictable to worry about so makes it an easy choice to simply enjoy.

          1. Actually I would say that our “crappy” April is still to come later this week and perhaps the rest of the month but in my opinion, April so far has been quite nice thus far and could have easily been much more miserable. April 1st was the only real “wintry” day that I can recall. I am curious if the social media complainers are from outside of NE?

            1. They are virtually all from this area and apparently can’t ever remember the weather being this “crazy” which tells me one or more of the following…
              1) They are kidding (I hope).
              2) They pay too much attention to the wrong info and buy every word.
              3) They never paid attention.
              4) They did pay attention but have really bad memories.
              5) They are, in fact, as crazy as they believe the weather to be.

  5. Your hockey team showed up and played at least. I wish I saw that effort with the Rangers on Sunday night and I better see a lot more effort tonight or they will lose in five games.

  6. TK it is amazing the Rangers have lost six in a row at home in the playoffs and this goes back to the eastern conference finals game 2 in 2015. I saw a stat during that six game losing streak at home in the playoffs they have been outscored 21-4. If You can’t win at home in the playoffs your not going to go far. This team showed no effort Sunday night and if it was not for Henrik Lundquist they could have lost 5-1. The power play looks terrible 0 for 10 in the series. To me tonight is a must win. If they go down three games to one I don’t see them coming back.

  7. If the C’s and B’s don’t win their next respective games I would say their postseasons are done for all practical purposes. Neither have the capabilities to come back from 2-game deficits.

  8. Thursday may end up being a decent day if the GFS/NAM/WRF are all right. Of course, if the GFS is right, after Thursday, we may not see the sun or temps above 55 for another week or more.

  9. Still mostly sunny here in JP. Home with the worst imaginable case of strep throat. Barley able to swallow liquids for days. Anywho a bit breezy but overall a pleasant spring day.

    1. Was out and about at lunch. Very pleasant out there, Decent amount of sunshine, but cool temperatures. Car was reading only 53. Airport reading 47.

NO WAY it’s 47 back from the water’s edge. Sure, low 50s but not 47.

        1. I didn’t say it wasn’t legit. I am just saying that
back from the coast it is NOT 47. It is in the low to mid 50s.

            1. You said coastal locations.

I was out with my coat unzipped.

              It was nice out.

Not in the 40s where I was.

          1. And I don’t mean all that far back. I was in Copley Square and I am here to say that now way in hell it was 47 even in Copley Square. At least 52 or 53 if not more.

  10. Always nice to see you here, Hadi, but darn I’m sorry to hear about the strep. I hope you feel better quickly and no one else picks it up.

  11. 59.7 here with a 29 DP and a light wind. Very nice! I got a pole to put my humingbird feeder on. The one I had on the old deck was GREAT but it won’t fit the new deck. I ended up having to put this on a table on the deck. I’m going to have to go to Plan C.

  12. A pleasant surprise even in eastern sections today. Abundant sunshine with temps in the low to mid 50s except for the “immediate” coastline.

    1. hehehe – I am THRILLED to still see you here. But it isn’t a surprise. I said this all day yesterday. The vlb model is right once again. 😉 🙂 🙂

    2. I actually had 48-55 forecast highs and never brought in “overcast”.

There was a little more sun than I thought, however, thanks to air being slightly drier than forecast. Not a bad result for the minor forecast error.

    1. Also: I’m picking fox 25’s weekend. That’s what I’ll be ordering as our weekend weather. Almost 60 temps both days and very low chance of rain. I’m on board.

  13. We really need the rain! Doesn’t appear as if we’ll be experiencing widespread meaningful rainfall. Just the nuisance variety.

  14. Today was a beauty. Did not expect it and so was very pleasantly surprised.

Thank you, TK, for your forecast.

  15. I hope everyone had a nice Easter! I’ve been pretty busy, with my junior year starting to wind down…

April weather: Not sure how anyone could be thinking it’s been “crappy” thus far. If anything is abnormal about the month so far, it’s the warmth, as we are among the warmest Aprils on record so far. That will start to change, however, as we enter a more seasonable temperature regime. Not cold, and even cool would be a stretch. The rest of the month likely averages very close to normal in the temperature department. Hopefully we get some rain in there, too. We’ve had a good few months with regard to cutting back and almost eliminating our ongoing drought. We could still use some more rain, however, and at the least we need to keep meeting our averages for precip if we want to avoid slipping back into drought.

Sports: B’s are toast. They lose the next two. Good fighting by them down the stretch of the regular season to at least get in the playoffs, but they aren’t built to make a real run. C’s, I’m not sure. They’re obviously not a number 1 seed caliber team, but I’m not convinced they roll over in this series. If they lose tonight, they’re probably doomed. But I think they win tonight and take the series in 6 or 7.

    1. Your last paragraph in particular I totally agree. The C’s badly need to work on rebounding. Even if they survive this current series, my bet is they surely lose the next before they even reach the Cleveland series.

  16. As we come up on May 1, we’ll also be coming up on one month to the official start of hurricane season. Today, the NHC is keeping an eye on a disturbance over the open waters of the North Atlantic. They’re giving it a 3o% chance of developing into a sub-tropical cyclone. In reality, it probably already is one, but the rules and methods for making that classification official are very muddled, especially in the “off-season”. If they do pull the trigger, it would become “Arlene.”

    http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/TROP/floaters/91L/imagery/avn_lalo-animated.gif

Many agencies have been releasing their seasonal predictions for hurricane activity this season. General consensus seems to be near to below average activity, which I agree with. A developing El Nino combined with a generally unfavorable SST configuration in the Atlantic argues for below normal activity. But we’ll see. It only takes one…

      1. Will also miss the mainland by about 1500 miles, and probably never develop into much.

  17. A brief political digression. Don’t worry, this is NOT about Trump or current U.S. politics. It’s about the strength of our democracy. Our system of government has many flaws, but I still think that its design at least is better than any the world has ever seen.

What’s occurring in Britain today is a reminder of how flawed many parliamentary democracies are. They do fascinate me, especially because when I first encountered them upon my move to Europe in the early 80s I was not used to it growing up in the U.S. The fixed terms in office for both the executive and legislative branches were something I thought all democracies had. Note, also I thought that all democracies had a separation of legislative and executive powers. While the two are kept separate in the U.S., they are joined at the hip in Britain and some other parliamentary democracies where prime ministers and cabinet members are members of parliament. So, how shocked I was when Thatcher disbanded parliament in 1983 and called for a snap election, because her party was leading in the polls and she wanted to take advantage of that fact. Theresa May may have outdone Thatcher this time. Three years before the end of the 5-year `term,’ she’s called a snap general election because her party is way ahead in the polls. She claims it’s a Brexit thing, but I’m not buying it. Nor should you. It’s a very peculiar system in my view, and one which would rankle me if I were a Brit. All ~650 MPs will be up for election, their `terms’ cut short by the stroke of a pen. The incumbent clearly has the upper hand in calling for an election 6 weeks from today! And so, while many state that an American President has more power than the British prime minister. I’m not so sure. No U.S. President can disband Congress and order a general election. It’s probably a good thing that U.S. Presidents can’t do this. Long live fixed terms.

    1. Interesting perspective, Joshua. I think, like the weather, we often take the structure of our government for granted. Ther is no question in my mind that the men…often backed by very strong women…were blessed with an amazing gift of foresight. Just Adams comments to Abigail in July 1776 made it clear he envisioned what they had created as something lasting well into the future. It was created deliberately in opposition to governments of that time. The president was never intended to have the sole power.

“……. The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America…….It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.”

      And so it is

      1. Yes, the Founding Fathers (and the women who supported them) were a truly amazing bunch. Not infallible. Nevertheless, prescient and way ahead of their time in terms of establishing the means to stable government that is subject to checks and balances. Note, I did not say good government, because there is no guarantee that there will be good government under the constitution.
