Wednesday Forecast

7:29AM

DAYS 1-5 (MAY 3-7)
A cool pool at upper levels triggers diurnal clouds today. An approaching storm sends its clouds into the region Thursday but they will be of the high, thin variety and allow the sun to shine for a portion of the day first. Then a slow moving storm brings rain into the region during Friday. A large upper level low pressure area will spin over the Northeast this weekend with unsettled weather, although it will not rain the entire time.
TODAY: Sun early then lots of passing clouds. Highs 58-66. Wind NW 10-20 MPH.
TONIGHT: Lots of clouds early, then clearing. Lows 35-45, coldest interior valleys. Wind NW diminishing to under 10 MPH.
THURSDAY: Sunny start, then increasing clouds. Highs 58-66. Wind light variable becoming SE up to 10 MPH.
FRIDAY: Overcast. Rain arrives west to east, may be heavy at times. Lows 45-53. Highs 53-60.
SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy to partly sunny. Showers likely. Lows 47-55. Highs 60-68.
SUNDAY: Mostly cloudy to partly sunny. Chance of showers. Lows 45-53. Highs 57-65.

DAYS 6-10 (MAY 8-12)
A blocking pattern will place upper level low pressure over the region with more unsettled weather and below normal temperatures.

DAYS 11-15 (MAY 13-17)
A little drier and milder weather develops during this period as a more zonal flow is expected.

  1. Good morning and thank you TK.
Really nice this morning with a bit of a cool bite to it.

  2. I don’t know if anyone else here noticed, but yesterday about an hour before sunset there were some beautiful puffy clouds just to the east, probably over Boston Harbor.

    1. Yes, I did see those as I was headed out at that time.
They looked pretty neat with the setting sun illuminating them. 😀

  3. While still below normal and not promising a ton of sunshine, I get the idea that perhaps the block will not set up in a way where it’s a northeast wind, 46F and continuous drizzle with periods of rain for days on end. The models seem to be portraying a setup more with an initial rainy day followed by the cutoff low being overhead or slightly north of us, which would offer many days with a NW wind and repeatedly developing instability cloudiness after a bit of morning sun. The 850 mb temps for a few days as quite chilly, so any brief heavy instability shower might have a chance to mix with some frozen precip.

    1. Could be. We shall see. If so, I agree with your assessment.
At least it would allow 50s instead of 40s.

    2. Euro looks pretty chilly aloft around the 11th and 12th with some precipitation. Whether there would be an snow mixed in or not is pure speculation. Climo would suggest no, but anything is possible.

      1. Climo can suggest whatever it wants, but the pattern at the time has the final say. 😀

    1. Take a look at the map he posted and he’s referring to the fact there are 6 distinctive large scale troughs in the hemisphere.

It is somewhat unusual to see, but is nothing new. If it’s going to happen, spring is typically the time.

  4. Thank you, TK.

I’m running in a 10k up a mountain (well, a large hill) in Vermont on the 13th of May. With my luck it’ll be snowing and/or sleeting on the way up. I’ve done this 10k before in May under muddy conditions in the low 40s, and also on an 80F day. Anything can and will happen in mid May in Vermont.

    1. I spent a week in Vermont in mid May of 1997 and it was generally cold and unsettled and there was still plenty of snow at Killington.

      1. As I recall spring of 1997 featured several major winter storms in New England. Everyone remembers April 1st, which hit SNE hard. But, there were several big snowstorms in May in Northern New England (snow was mostly in the higher elevations, e.g., White Mountains).

  5. Tk can I get your best thinking on Saturday. I need to start thinking about do I call the customer, crew decisions etc. This is a very well paid job and would like to do it Saturday as planned hopefully

  6. Anyone else have a gazillion tiny gypsy moth caterpillars milling around their house

      1. More north than they may have reached. They are coming up from RI. We are covered with them but you have to look as they are only about 1/8 inch. Did you have them last year?

  7. Good morning…

Low dipped to 34.3 here in Taunton.
Have to scrape the car windshields.

May the Fourth be with you today!
