11:30AM
DAYS 1-5 (MAY 7-11)
Not much to change in today’s update. Upper level low pressure will continue spin over the northeastern USA for the entirety of this period, which is an unsettled pattern but not full of wash-out days. As always, timing individual periods of wet weather is a little difficult but updates will continue to process of focusing the forecast especially through the first 2 days.
TODAY: Partly to mostly sunny through early afternoon. Partly to mostly cloudy mid afternoon on. Showers likely over Cape Cod and a few scattered showers mainly west of Boston late in the day. Highs 58-66, coolest South Coast. Wind S 5-15 MPH with higher gusts.
TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Scattered showers. Lows 45-52. Wind SW under 10 MPH.
MONDAY: Variably cloudy. Isolated to scattered showers. Highs 55-62. Wind W 5-15 MPH.
TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY: Variably cloudy. Daily risk of showers, highest risk Tuesday PM and Thursday AM based on current timing. Lows 45-52. Highs 56-63.
DAYS 6-10 (MAY 12-16)
Elongation of the upper low early in the period and then another slightly more progressive upper low later in the period will likely keep it on the unsettled side with temperatures near to mostly below normal for this period.
DAYS 11-15 (MAY 17-21)
Continued somewhat lower than average confidence on this outlook but still feeling that a milder/drier stretch of weather may get underway during these days, at least toward the end.
Thanks, TK!!!
Thank you, TK! Happy Sunday.
Hum dum dum ditty dum
Hum dum dum
Since it appears to be a quiet Sunday morning, anyone know the song with the above lyrics?
JPD? Have not seen much of you the past few says. Hoping all is ok?!
Oops. It is afternoon. How did that happen?
Thank you.
Wonderful day today, outside on the patio overlooking the marsh while I do my environmental ethics final paper and coastal geology paper. Grade 10 spring day. 2 more weeks until summer break which is when I think summer will show itself.
1. water level is the highest I have seen it in a while.
2. All the trees are not struggling this year as they are filled with seeds, flowering trees are filled
3.I saw my first hummingbird of the season.
4. Saw the river otters for the first time since 2014
Things that are concerning
1. I have not yet seen a single honey bee.
2. I have not seen any bubble bees either
3 No dragon flies
4 massive mosquito population forming.
5. Bats do not come usually till later in the month so waiting for them.
Your first four…
1) Absolutely. We still have a long term deficit but the recent short term surplus has pretty much eradicated the drought.
2) One of the better springs for vegetation in a while.
3) I haven’t seen a hummingbird in so long…
4) No rivers near me, so I can’t see river otters.
Your concerning 5…
1) I have not either, but they should appear not long from now, although the population is certainly way down.
2) I have seen several of those. There seem to be more around this year. Perhaps it’s regional.
3) Dragon flies will show up as soon as it warms a bit more.
4) Mild winter + wet spring = bumper “crop” of skeeters.
5) The bats will help reduce the mosquito population.
Our hummers arw in full force. I saw a drafonfly the other day. I tried to sit out today but was covered in minutes with baby gypsy moths. And now all I do is itch
I have not seen a honey or bumble bee. Lots of wasps.
Thanks TK.
This has actually turned into a very nice weekend weather wise. We were at six flags yesterday in short sleeves under nearly 100% sunny skies during the pm and temps near 70. The crowds/lines were not bad at all – i’m sure everyone was scared away by the forecasts on their weather apps. A bit cooler today here in northern CT but temps near 60 under partly sunny skies. Not bad at all.
Did anyone here about all the wind damage that occurred in parts of eastern NY and western VT during the storm Friday? Hurricane force winds in some areas caused by an apparent gravity wave. Here’s a nice write up by Ryan Hanrahan explaining what happened.

I had not heard. That is awful.
Killington still going strong this weekend skiing off the superstar lift. The only resort left in the east that is still open. Cam shot:

Thank you for link to the camera.
The only reason I am not there on the Superstar trail this weekend is that I was unexpectedly hit with an attack of sanity when the calendar read “May”.
I yesterday finally brought my golf clubs out of the cellar. 🙂
Ha! Smart man. Son and grandson headed for the driving range this morning
This was meant for yesterday but NECN/NBC Boston didn’t change their videos in their app of the latest forecast until this morning rendering collection of all 7 day forecasts delayed. http://i.imgur.com/MOP90oZ.jpg
I will also post the 7 days later tonight assuming they’re more on the ball today.
Thank you, Dr
For a year interested re gypsy moths.
We have them everywhere. I had To shut windows most of the way so they didn’t blow into the house. I’m sure you know how happy that made me

I find it interesting that 100+” of snowfall in 2015 led to moderate-major drought and yet, this past winter’s snows barely above normal (+3.8″) has produced surpluses of water with more likely to come for the upcoming summer.
The snowfall of 2015 did not lead to a drought. The drought was already in place. What it did not do was help much to relieve it. The pattern was extremely cold, most of the snow was very low water content to begin with, and then a fair amount of that never melted into run-off, but sublimated right back into the air.
The snowfall of 2016-2017 did not produce surpluses of water either. The precipitation for the first 4 months of 2017 has been above normal, and that is where the major reduction and in some cases eradication of drought came from.
The snow in the winter where Boston got over 100 inches was a powdery snow and didn’t seep into the ground. The snow this past winter was more of that wet snow which seeped into the ground. This is just my guess.
Close, but there’s more to it. See above.
Sunday afternoon already. In the middle of a honey do list and taking a break.
Beautiful day so far anyway.
Not weather related, but has anyone seen the movie LION?
OMG, what a movie! We viewed it last night and I must say I was impressed.
Riveting and realistic. They did an outstanding job with this one.
The only negative was putting up with English Subtitles for the 1st 1/2 half hour, but
by the end of the movie, one understands why they were used. Amazing film!
Outstanding, imho.
Happy to see you here. I was about to send out the hounds.
Is lion on demand or movies. I will check it out. Thank you. A friend saw fly boys and also recommended.
It is available on Comcast On Demand.
We saw fly boys as well. We liked it. Was that the one with
James Franco? I think so.
The expected rain is heading into Cape Cod area now. Later today we should see a few showers west of Boston, combining to make this officially one of the most miserable weather days in history. 😉
BAHAHAHA
And no, I’m not going to let it go…
If people want to keep complainin’ about weather that isn’t even bad, then I’m gonna keep right on having fun with it. 😀
Just like Storm HQ, I call it as I see it. 😉
You go …..well, what do I say here. Guy!!! I’m right with you!
Thanks TK. Your outlooks, short and long range, have been even more spot on than usual lately. It turned out be to be a very nice day for the annual end of year student AMS barbecue here in Plymouth, NH.
I complain about spring because of the allergies other than that, I do a lot in spring if I am feeling up to it. Its great for biking and hiking.
I just hope late may it warms up good as I am hopefully going to be on Nantucket and want that harbor to warm up a bit, i be diving/snorking in the seagrass and collecting crap diversity in the seagrass beds and seeing if there is any difference in the diversity in low density and high density beds.
I think Suffering is exempt. Kind of like those who the heat affects physically. like Mrs OS. I imagine that.
I hope you have a great time on Nantucket
Thanks TK for your explanation above regarding the recent drought. I don’t believe, however, that the TV mets really started alerting the drought to the viewing public until that following 2015 summer and beyond. Am I correct on that, TK?
I had no idea that we were already in a drought before those snows even began. Wow!
Good call for Plymouth today Tk. Job was done today in 6 hrs with no rain just a couple drops . Even squeezed an add on in scituate yesterday morning . Thank you .
Celtics lose again. This series is getting scary now especially with these back-to-back blowouts. 🙁
7 Day Forecasts from around the dial: http://i.imgur.com/rqAboUa.jpg
Thanks as always! I see that NBC Boston has rain for 9 of the next 10 days.
Thank you Dr. Philip, I think showers? Spotty. We had a shower here tonight that lasted all of 5 minutes and ended with the second rainbow in two days. Otherwise the day was full of sun and white clouds dotting a blue sky
Of course I assumed more showery in nature as opposed to a general rain. I still found it interesting that raindrops of any kind were there for so many days in a row.
Got it. I’m ignoring them 🙂 🙂

Hmmmm. The black hole
The Storm HQ Weekly Outlook should be sponsored by Snickers this week. Why? Because that pesky upper low isn’t going anywhere for a while.

Thanks SAK for that May 1977 snowfall map. 🙂
New post!
