Monday Forecast

7:33AM

DAYS 1-5 (MAY 8-12)
Upper level low pressure will dominate the weather during the next several days. Its orientation is shifting so after our fairly mild weekend it will be cooler for this week, though it still will not result in any all-day rain, just episodes of showers. The low will start to elongate and drift away toward the end of the week.
TODAY: Variably cloudy. Scattered showers eastern MA early to mid morning. Isolated to scattered showers anywhere midday through afternoon. Highs 55-62. Wind W 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.
TONIGHT: Variably cloudy. Isolated showers early. Lows 37-44. Wind W 5-15 MPH.
TUESDAY: Partly sunny to mostly cloudy. Scattered to general showers afternoon. Highs 54-61. Wind SW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.
TUESDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Isolated showers early. Lows 37-44. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.
WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. Isolated showers mainly afternoon. Highs 56-63. Wind N 5-15 MPH.
THURSDAY: Mostly cloudy. Scattered to general showers. Lows 40-47. Highs 56-63.
FRIDAY: Variably cloudy. Isolated to scattered showers. Lows 40-47. Highs 56-63.

DAYS 6-10 (MAY 13-17)
Another upper low moves into the region on the weekend of May 13-14 and brings a risk of rain, though there is some chance this surface feature stays far enough south for a miss. This should be followed by a pattern similar to the one going on this week.

DAYS 11-15 (MAY 18-22)
Still looking at a possible transition to dry and warmer weather during this period.

      1. April and May are the two New England months I loathe. Temperatures in the 50s just don’t get it done for me. 🙂

  1. Thanks, TK.

Yes, I would like to see some sunny days in the 70’s and 80’s. But it will come soon enough. It won’t be long before we complain that it is too hot! At least we can open the windows at times and enjoy the fresh air – rain or not. Once it gets too hot – we need the A/C. And whenever it rains I feel it is helping the drought.

    1. Good morning, rainshine.

It is GREAT to see you here and your words of wisdom always make me smile!

      1. Thank you, Vicki. I wouldn’t say my words are that wise – but I am glad that I make you smile. And it is beautiful here in Sudbury this morning. Bright sun and greenery and flora blooming nicely. (My allergy is aware of it too!) But if there is one complaint I have about the weather lately – is that many days it is so WINDY. Especially when the sun is out. Oh, well. It’s still pretty out.

        1. I do think it seems we see more wind than I recall but then my memory only recalls certain details at times. I am a fan of the wind so enjoy it.

            1. We are. We are at a family wedding in Jamaica and having a great time. Today is our first completely sunny day! How are you and Marc?

              1. We’re ok, thanks. Marc has a detached retina and has had some surgeries for it and may need another. He has some sight out of that eye. Always something! Sounds like you are having fun in Jamaica. Enjoy!

              2. We are ok. Marc has had some surgeries for a detached retina. He may need more. Always something! Sounds like you are having fun; enjoy!

                1. Sorry – I tried to post the first time and it said I already did it? so I re-posted and it came up twice.

  2. Good Monday morning. I love how green everything is. Spring is the season that makes me just sit back and appreciate new life.

  3. Good morning and thanks for the doom and gloom TK. Typical Sucky New England Spring. The nature of the beast. It is like this almost every Spring to one degree or another.

  4. Here I sit trying to do work in the office and my hands are freezing!!!
They’re like popcicles! 51 at good ole Logan. brrrr

I think they are pumping AC in here()!@#!(@*#()!@*#(!@)(*#)(!@*

  5. My classroom is freezing, too. They shut down the boiler at the school after Spring Break.

The zamboni just finished making new ice and second period action is set to start in Room 130 right after these commercial messages.

    1. 😀 😀 😀 😀

      Love it.

I made a thermostatic adjustment for my region of the building before lunch.
Now it is MUCH more comfortable. Shhhh Please don’t tell facilities. 😀
I took matters into my own hands.

      1. Ok – is everyone sitting down??? It is a must or you will fall.

I’m on a conference call all day. My hands were also cold trying to type. I turned the heat on. I barely turned it on in the winter and don’t think I have ever turned it on in May.

          1. I would agree. I am pretty certain everyone knows how I feel about turning on heat. For what it is worth, it was literally off. I turned it to 67, but it kicked on.

            1. To be fair, I didn’t turn it on at all until December if I recall correctly. So same time period…just a shift to the left.

  6. Thanks TK !

Some more positive signs from around our side of the hemisphere …..

Kimmirut, near the arctic circle, is sitting in fog, with a current temp of about +5C or 40F. That mild, humid air that was here Saturday morning has made it all the way up there to 63N Latitude. It was only 7 to 10 days ago that it was still -15C up there.

On Unisys weather, if you click surface conditions for northern Canada, you’ll no longer find anyone reporting below 0F temperatures. Even at or slightly north of the arctic circle, afternoon temps are getting into the teens and low 20s. Again, only 7 to 10 days ago, many locations were a good 5 to 10F below 0F.

So, this blocky pattern has really warmed up a large portion of the arctic circle 15F to 25F in the last week and I’d guess we’ll see another 5F to 8F jump this week.

Once things start progressing again in the atmosphere, I’ll bet we get a sudden big warmup in the lower 48. Sure, it may be 7 to 10 days away, but I think the instability clouds and 50s will be worth it for a week.

    1. If it means 90s, then let’s keep the 50s. IF it means 70s and occasional 80s, then fine. Not that I can do anything about it at all. 😀

    2. I’ve been watching the Kimmirut webcam and forecast too. Wednesday their forecast is for a sunny day with temps in the mid to upper 40s F. Thursday close to 50F. It will be interesting to see how much of their snow pack disappears in the coming days.

  7. OK, I’m not sure I know the answer but I think I do.

Which one was not a weatherman at some point in his career.

    A. David Letterman
    B. Pat Sajak
    C. Barry Burbank
    D. Steve Martin

    Answer (I think) later today.

    1. We had this I think…..the sad part is I cannot recall whether we truly had it or I made it up. If we did, I believe I had the wrong answer also but cannot recall what it was. I’m clearly memory challenged

      I’ll say D

      Thank you

    2. Just for shits and giggles, I’ll Say B.
I do believe it is either B or D, since D has been selected, I’ll go with B. 😀

        1. D (although technically speaking, Barry was always a meteorologist as opposed to a “weatherman”). 😉

  8. High here in Plymouth, NH, was 47… at midnight. Bounced back to 46 during the day, and have hovered around 44 for most of the afternoon. With a steady breeze, it feels genuinely cold outside.

  9. Regarding the above trivia question, I am surprised that Barry is one of the possible answers. It might have been more challenging if another TV celeb had been there instead.

    1. I saw that on FB. Rainshine shared it. Awesome. TK has been talking about the possibility today for weeks.

  10. Eric showed a snowfall map for May 9-10, 1977 that had Providence at 7.0″ which is quite impressive for that area even for April let alone May.

I remember quite well as I was finishing up my junior year of high school, but I had no idea so much snow fell just southwest of Boston. Wow!

    1. We were right on the edge here in JP. We managed a full 2 inches, but 5 or 6 miles away there was 6 inches and it built up from there. Amazing storm.

    2. I was a high school junior, too, Philip. Your post reminded me that I have a copy of the May 10, 1977 New Bedford Standard-Times (I save everything)…

The top story was not the snow, but a massive power outage that affected more than 500,000 customers from Boston to Norwood, all of Bristol and Plymouth Counties, all of Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard and parts of Rhode Island.

There was up to 4″ of radial ice on transmission lines that knocked out seven lines.
Following the snow, the temperature dipped to 33 degrees in New Bedford.

I remember that Mansfield High School was closed for two days (May 9-10) because of the snow and no power to the town. The track team shoveled the track so we could have practice.

    3. Wasn’t there another significant May snowfall in 1980 or 81? I remember being in the car with my mother and sister, and another student who was an inexperienced driver hit the brakes hard and slid into us. This was in North
Andover, and we were both in high school.

  11. Answer to quiz.

Which one was not a weatherman at some point in his career.

    A. David Letterman
    B. Pat Sajak
    C. Barry Burbank
    D. Steve Martin

    The correct answer is D.

    1. Thank you, Longshot.

I believe when we had the quiz before I did not choose Steve Martin because I think he played the part of a weatherman and in my mind that translated to being one 🙂
